Yesterday, voters in the state of Maine voted no to gay marriage, but yes to medical marijuana. That's right, people in Maine believe marriage should be a sacred institution between a really stoned man and a really stoned woman. ~ Conan O'Brien
State Of Maine quotes by Conan O'Brien
Eight Bells: Robert J. Kane '55D died June 3, 2017, in Palm Harbor, Florida. He came to MMA by way of Boston College. Bob or "Killer," as he was affectionately known, was an independent and eccentric soul, enjoying the freedom of life. After a career at sea as an Officer in the U.S. Navy and in the Merchant Marine he retired to an adventurous single life living with his two dogs in a mobile home, which had originally been a "Yellow School Bus." He loved watching the races at Daytona, Florida, telling stories about his interesting deeds about flying groceries to exotic Caribbean Islands, and misdeeds with mysterious ladies he had known. For years he spent his summers touring Canada and his winters appreciating the more temperate weather at Fort De Soto in St. Petersburg, Florida…. Enjoying life in the shadow of the Sunshine Bridge, Bob had an artistic flare, a positive attitude and a quick sense of humor. Not having a family, few people were aware that he became crippled by a hip replacement operation gone bad at the Bay Pines VA Hospital. His condition became so bad that he could hardly get around, but he remained in good spirits until he suffered a totally debilitating stroke. For the past 6 years Bob spent his time at various Florida Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Homes and Palliative Care Hospitals. His end came when he finally wound up as a terminal patient at the Hospice Facility in Palm Harbor, Florida. Bob was 86 years old when he passed. He will be missed…. ~ Hank Bracker
State Of Maine quotes by Hank Bracker
In my home state of Maine, we've seen out-of-state groups with anonymous donors spend millions of dollars to campaign against issues that don't fit their agenda. ~ Chellie Pingree
State Of Maine quotes by Chellie Pingree
And my response is 70,000 people in the state of Maine that paid income tax in 2011 will not be paying income tax in 2012. ~ Paul LePage
State Of Maine quotes by Paul LePage
The whole state of Maine is unlocked. ~ Jonathan Lethem
State Of Maine quotes by Jonathan Lethem
The best part of my life is I've been hired to work for the people of the state of Maine, and I'm very humble and very proud. ~ Paul LePage
State Of Maine quotes by Paul LePage
Fortune has dealt with me rather too well. I have known little struggle, not much poverty, many generosities. Now and then I have, for my books or myself, been somewhat warmly denounced
there was one good pastor in California who upon reading my Elmer Gantry desired to lead a mob and lynch me, while another holy man in the state of Maine wondered if there was no respectable and righteous way of putting me in jail. ~ Sinclair Lewis
State Of Maine quotes by Sinclair Lewis
My greatest fear in the state of Maine: newspapers. I'm not a fan of newspapers. ~ Paul LePage
State Of Maine quotes by Paul LePage
A beach house isn't just real estate. It's a state of mind. ~ Douglas Adams
State Of Maine quotes by Douglas Adams
A state of war or anarchy, in which law has little force, is so far valuable, that it puts every man on trial. The man of principle is known as such, and even in the fury of faction is respected. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
State Of Maine quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
He, too, had dreamed dreams. Folk are usually content to draw from such visions portents which sometimes prove true, since they reveal the sleeper's secrets; but he surmised that these games the mind plays when left to itself can indicate to us chiefly the way in which the soul perceives things. Accordingly, he sought to enumerate the qualities of substance as seen in dream: lightness, impalpability, incoherence, total liberty with regard to time; then, the mobility of forms which allows each person in this state to be several people, and the several to reduce themselves to one; last, the sense of something akin to Platonic reminiscence, but also the almost insupportable feeling of necessity. Such phantom categories strongly resemble what Hermetists clam to know of existence beyond the grave, as if the world of death were only continuing for the soul the awesome world of night. ~ Marguerite Yourcenar
State Of Maine quotes by Marguerite Yourcenar
Tea is still believed, by English people of all classes, to have miraculous properties. A cup of tea can cure, or at least significantly alleviate, almost all minor physical ailments and indispositions, from a headache to a scraped knee. Tea is also an essential remedy for all social and psychological ills, from a bruised ego to the trauma of a divorce or bereavement. This magical drink can be used equally effectively as a sedative or stimulant, to calm and soothe or to revive and invigorate. Whatever your mental or physical state, what you need is 'a nice cup of tea'. ~ Kate Fox
State Of Maine quotes by Kate Fox
Writing poetry is a state of free float ~ Margaret Atwood
State Of Maine quotes by Margaret Atwood
Of course, many acts which are sins against God are also injuries to our fellow-citizens, and must on that account, but only on that account, be made crimes. But of all the sins in the world, I should have thought homosexuality was the one that least concerns the State. We hear too much of the State. Government is at its best a necessary evil. Let's keep it in its place. ~ C.S. Lewis
State Of Maine quotes by C.S. Lewis
While the pressures of life are inevitable, if at the end of the day you are unable to completely let go of the day and return to a calm, centered inner state, you are overstressed. ~ Deepak Chopra
State Of Maine quotes by Deepak Chopra
Like the ocean that remains calm in its depths even when waves rage over its surface, and like the sun that continues shining on high even during storms, we can at each moment create value and develop our state of life, enjoying our existence to the fullest in times of both suffering and joy. ~ Daisaku Ikeda
State Of Maine quotes by Daisaku Ikeda
Let us imagine a number of men in fetters, and all condemned to death, some of whom are executed each day in the sight of the others, so that the survivors see their own state in that of their fellows and wait their turn, looking at one another in sorrow and without hope. That is a picture of the human condition. ~ Balise Pascal
State Of Maine quotes by Balise Pascal
Every word of etatistic thought is contradicted by the doctrines of sociology and economics; this is why etatists endeavour to prove that these sciences do not exist. In their opinion, social affairs are shaped by the State. To the law, all things are possible; and there is no sphere in which State intervention is not omnipotent. ~ Ludwig Von Mises
State Of Maine quotes by Ludwig Von Mises
In our natural state, we are glorious beings. In the world of illusion, we are lost and imprisoned, slaves to our appetites and our will to false power. ~ Marianne Williamson
State Of Maine quotes by Marianne Williamson
No matter how old we get, we somehow can never convince ourselves that whatever trial we're in the middle of is only temporary. No matter how may trials we've had in the past, and no matter how well we remember that they eventually were there no longer, we're sure that this one, this one right now, is a permanent state of affairs. But it's not. By nature humans are temporary beings.'
'You're saying i just have to ride it out until it goes away.'
'Not at all, my dear. I'm saying you have to strive for a solution and trust that eventually there will be one. ~ Janina Matthewson
State Of Maine quotes by Janina Matthewson
Humans are most imaginative when they need a means of self-destruction. If the world existed in an overflowing amount of happiness; a utopian state, then the suicide rate would dwarf any extinction level threat. Humans cannot be trusted with their own survival. Their minds have been trained to be blindly and unconsciously subjugated. In a time related to Heaven-on-Earth, the smallest amount of worry, will drive a human into the arms of death. This is how weak and fragile the human mind and will is. It's funny, because the best friend of humanity, is none other than Chaos itself. ~ Lionel Suggs
State Of Maine quotes by Lionel Suggs
I wanted to go to the rooftree of Maine to start my trip before turning west. It seemed to give the journey a design, and everything in the world must have design or the human mind rejects it. But in addition it must have purpose or the human conscience shies away from it. Maine ~ John Steinbeck
State Of Maine quotes by John Steinbeck
Malcolm X and Edmund Burke shared an appreciation of this important insight, this painful truth
that the state wants men to be weak and timid, not strong and proud. ~ Thomas Szasz
State Of Maine quotes by Thomas Szasz
The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the "state of emergency" in whi ch we live is not the exception but the rule. ~ Anonymous
State Of Maine quotes by Anonymous
To me, Sri Chinmoy is a source of higher power and an uplifting example of right attitude. He understands the human impulse to transcend one's present limited state of being, and his life exemplifies this. ~ Frank Zane
State Of Maine quotes by Frank Zane
Terry took the silence as acquiescence, "The other way to make money is to exploit people, oh, no sorry, that's the 'only' way to make money, exploit other people, that's how the billionaires have acquired all their money by exploiting others… So how did they achieve it? You're going to love this… they changed all the rules to accommodate what they wanted to do. How I hear you ask… easy, they own the politicians, they own the banks, they own industry and they own everything. They made it easier for themselves to invest in so called emerging markets. What once would've been considered treasonous was now considered virtuous. Instead of building up the nation state and its resources, all of its resources, including its people, they concentrated on building up their profits. That's all they did. They invested in parts of the world where children could be worked for 12 hours a day 7 days a week, where grown men and women could be treated like slaves and all for a pittance and they did this because we here in the west had made it illegal to work children, because we'd abolished slavery, because we had fought for workers' rights, for a minimum wage, for a 40 hr week, for pensions, for the right to retire, for a free NHS, for free education, all of these things were getting in the way of them making a quick and easy profit and worse …had been making us feel we were worth something. ~ Arun D. Ellis
State Of Maine quotes by Arun D. Ellis
And when we make choices informed by a
depressive state of mind, they're more than likely to keep us stuck in our unhappiness. ~ J. Mark G. Williams
State Of Maine quotes by J. Mark G. Williams
Understanding is very different from knowing. Understanding is a psychological process of perceiving an object through reason. It is, in a sense, conceptualizing an object. But an object cannot be fully comprehended by conceptual understanding alone. Knowing is not thinking artificially or mobilizing rational logic. It is a state in which you come to obviously and plainly know, without trying to get it right. ~ Ilchi Lee
State Of Maine quotes by Ilchi Lee
The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation. ~ Adolf Hitler
State Of Maine quotes by Adolf Hitler
We have already observed that by excluding the immense majority of the human species from its midst, by keeping this majority outside the reciprocal engagements and duties of morality, of justice, and of right, the State denies humanity and, using that sonorous word patriotism, imposes injustice and cruelty as a supreme duty upon all its subjects. It restricts, it mutilates, it kills humanity in them, so that by ceasing to be men, they may be solely citizens - or rather, and more specifically, that through the historic connection and succession of facts, they may never rise above the citizen to the height of being man We have also seen that every state, under pain of destruction and fearing to be devoured by its neighbor states, must reach out toward omnipotence, and, having become powerful, must conquer. Who speaks of conquest speaks of peoples conquered, subjugated, reduced to slavery in whatever form or denomination. Slavery, therefore, is the necessary consequence of the very existence of the State. ~ Mikhail Bakunin
State Of Maine quotes by Mikhail Bakunin
We cannot feel strongly toward the totally unlike because it is unimaginable, unrealizable; nor yet toward the wholly like because it is stale - identity must always be dull company. The power of other natures over us lies in a stimulating difference which causes excitement and opens communication, in ideas similar to our own but not identical, in states of mind attainable but not actual. ~ Charles Horton Cooley
State Of Maine quotes by Charles Horton Cooley
The emotion of sex brings into being a state of mind. ~ Napoleon Hill
State Of Maine quotes by Napoleon Hill
The state of shock is losing its
charm. I want my brain back. Can't it just shake itself off like
a dog already and get back to work? ~ Kendare Blake
State Of Maine quotes by Kendare Blake
even if Noam Chomsky were right about everything, the Islamic doctrines related to martyrdom, jihad, blasphemy, apostasy, the rights of women and homosexuals, etc. would still present huge problems for the emergence of a global civil society (and these are problems quite unlike those presented by similar tenets in other faiths, for reasons that I have explained at length elsewhere and touch on only briefly here). And any way in which I might be biased or blinded by "the religion of the state," or any other form of cultural indoctrination, has absolutely no relevance to the plight of Shiites who have their mosques, weddings, and funerals bombed by Sunni extremists, or to victims of rape who are beaten, imprisoned, or even killed as "adulteresses" throughout the Muslim world. I hope it goes without saying that the Afghan girls who even now are risking their lives by merely learning to read would not be best compensated for their struggles by being handed copies of Chomsky's books enumerating the sins of the West ~ Sam Harris
State Of Maine quotes by Sam Harris
In every commercial state, notwithstanding any pretension to equal rights, the exaltation of a few must depress the many. ~ Adam Ferguson
State Of Maine quotes by Adam Ferguson
And he will manage the cure best who has foreseen what is to happen from the present state of matters. ~ Hippocrates
State Of Maine quotes by Hippocrates
There is no state of being called "trying". ~ John Yokoyama
State Of Maine quotes by John Yokoyama
I argue that one of the functions of a capitalist state is to defend capitalism from itself, to defend capitalism from the capitalists. ~ Michael Parenti
State Of Maine quotes by Michael Parenti
Reality shifts occur when we are in a dreamy state of energized awareness in which we are clear about what we prefer ~ Cynthia Sue Larson
State Of Maine quotes by Cynthia Sue Larson
Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the president, the vice president and the secretary of state, in that order, and should the president decide he wants to transfer the helm to the vice president, he will do so. As for now, I'm in control here, in the White House, pending the return of the vice president and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course. ~ Alexander Haig
State Of Maine quotes by Alexander Haig
Life draws us in different directions, sometimes simultaneously. When you follow the direction that life draws you in, if you stay in a very powerful state of mind, then you'll see eternity. ~ Frederick Lenz
State Of Maine quotes by Frederick Lenz
What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him. ~ Viktor E. Frankl
State Of Maine quotes by Viktor E. Frankl
We're all doing time. As soon as we get born, we find ourselves assigned to one little body, one set of desires and fears, one family, city, state, country, and planet. Who can ever understand exactly why or how it comes down as it does? The bottom line is, here we are. Whatever, wherever we are, this is what we've got. It's up to us whether we do it as easy time or hard time. ~ Bo Lozoff
State Of Maine quotes by Bo Lozoff
The soul seeks God by faith, not by the reasonings of the mind and labored efforts, but by the drawings of love; to which inclinations God responds, and instructs the soul, which co-operates actively. God then puts the soul in a passive state where He accomplishes all, causing great progress, first by way of enjoyment, then by privation, and finally by pure love. ~ Jeanne Marie Bouvier De La Motte Guyon
State Of Maine quotes by Jeanne Marie Bouvier De La Motte Guyon
When an individual or a group of individuals is kept in a situation of inferiority, the fact is that he or they are inferior. But the scope of the verb to be must be understood; bad faith means giving it a substantive value, when in fact it has the sense of the Hegelian dynamic: to be is to have become, to have been made as one manifests oneself. Yes, women in general are today inferior to men; that is, their situation provides them with fewer possibilities: the question is whether this state of affairs must be perpetuated. ~ Simone De Beauvoir
State Of Maine quotes by Simone De Beauvoir
The only distinction between freedom and slavery consists in this: In the former state a man is governed by the laws to which he has given his consent, either in person or by his representative; in the latter, he is governed by the will of another. In the one case, his life and property are his own; in the other, they depend upon the pleasure of his master. It is easy to discern which of these two states is preferable. ~ Alexander Hamilton
State Of Maine quotes by Alexander Hamilton
You can look at the state of California, which is on a pathway to destruction because they expanded government too much, thinking that there would always be someone to pay for it. ~ Greg Abbott
State Of Maine quotes by Greg Abbott
A single and same voice for the whole thousand-voiced multiple, a single and same Ocean for all the drops, a single clamour of Being for all beings: on condition that each being, each drop and each voice has reached the state of excess -- in other words, the difference which displaces and disguises them and, in turning upon its mobile cusp, causes them to return. ~ Gilles Deleuze
State Of Maine quotes by Gilles Deleuze
What we are looking for is the appearance of political units persisting in time and fixed in space, the development of permanent, impersonal institutions, agreement on the need for authority which can give final judgments and acceptance of the idea that this authority should receive the basic loyalty of its subjects. ~ Joseph Reese Strayer
State Of Maine quotes by Joseph Reese Strayer
Is one of the fairest portions of the globe to remain in a state of nature, the haunt of a few wretched savages, when it seems destined by the Creator to give support to a large population and to be the seat of civilization? ~ William Henry Harrison
State Of Maine quotes by William Henry Harrison
While I appreciated the educational advantages I enjoyed in the school and was proud of what I could show in mental culture, I had an earnest desire for something more than a mere business education ... I desired to study for a profession, and this prompted me to leave my native state. ~ Hiram Rhodes Revels
State Of Maine quotes by Hiram Rhodes Revels
Freedom in a democracy is the glory of the state, and, therefore, in a democracy only will the freeman of nature deign to dwell. ~ Plato
State Of Maine quotes by Plato
I love, because my love is not dependent on the object of love. My love is dependent on my state of being. So whether the other person changes, becomes different, friend turns into a foe, does not matter, because my love was never dependent on the other person. My love is my state of being. I simply love. ~ Osho
