After a few minutes, Molly came partway up the short ladder to the bridge and stopped. "Do I need to ask permission to come up there or something?"
"Why would you?" I asked.
She considered. "It's what they do on Star Trek? ~ Jim Butcher
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Jim Butcher
'Star Trek' is a 'Wagon Train' concept - built around characters who travel to worlds 'similar' to our own, and meet the action-adventure-drama which become our stories. Their transportation is the cruiser 'S.S. Yorktown,' performing a well-defined and long-range Exploration-Science-Security mission which helps create our format. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Gene Roddenberry
The truth of the matter is, all of those guys on Star Trek: The Next Generation actually want to be me. These impersonations they do are just some way of trying to feel what it must be like to be me. And I understand that! Because it feels really good to be Patrick Stewart! ~ Patrick Stewart
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Patrick Stewart
[Kirk] paced back toward his command chair, all eyes on him. "He must have a weakness."
"Certainly," Chekov said. "Is he not basically humanoid? He could be poisoned, phasered, stabbed-"
Kirk sneered. "Without killing him, Ensign."
With a shrug, Chekov turned quietly back to his console, pulling his hands from his lap and placing them on the controls. ~ Dave Galanter
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Dave Galanter
One of the reasons that I accepted, once asked to do Star Trek, was to give a single child a chance to see the long thought, to see themselves some 400 years hence. It occurred to me that we must ensure that we keep in front of children the ever-changing horizon. ~ Avery Brooks
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Avery Brooks
With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied - chains us all irrevocably. ~ Star Trek The Next Generation
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Star Trek The Next Generation
To the brave crew and passengers of the Kobayshi Maru ... sucks to be you. ~ Peter David
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Peter David
Most of what I do is science fiction. Some of the things I do are fantasy. I don't like the labels, they're marketing tools, and I certainly don't worry about them when I'm writing. They are also inhibiting factors; you wind up not getting read by certain people, or not getting sold to certain people because they think they know what you write. You say science fiction and everybody thinks Star Wars or Star Trek. ~ Octavia Butler
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Octavia Butler
I went to see 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' and J.J. Abrams, who's a friend of mine, made this film, and I went to see it at the premiere. Believe it or not, I was really blown away by the comic timing of it. ~ James Gray
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by James Gray
Yes, at some point, billions of years from now, the Earth will be destroyed by the sun, or bombarded into a rock by asteroids or a comet, but I suspect that we will be long gone by then, if we haven't figured out how to live more harmoniously, and found a way to Star Trek our asses into the Milky Way to find a new home. Hopefully, we'll learn our lesson before we do, or ole Tom Bombadilo will just be laughing at us again, on a different rock, spinning around a different sun, watching us play with our magic techno-ring-trinkets. ~ Steve Bivans
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Steve Bivans
If life were a Star Trek episode - and how awesome would that be? - slipping would be the equivalent of beaming up, minus the cheesy sound effects and assistance from Scotty. ~ Bethany K. Lovell
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Bethany K. Lovell
I just feel so flattered, because the cosplayers really make sure every detail is there. I don't think I've ever cosplayed a character before, but if I were to, I'd probably go as a Klingon from 'Star Trek.' ~ Karen Gillan
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Karen Gillan
'Star Trek' never grabbed me. Every time I hear about Klingons, I think of those little lint balls that stick to your clothes in the dryer. ~ Regina Brett
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Regina Brett
No, the type-casting didn't happen until after Star Trek. I don't think that you get typecast until you've been cast! ~ Jonathan Frakes
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Jonathan Frakes
Admiral Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy: How old do you think I am, anyway?
Lt. Commander Data: 137 years, Admiral, according to Starfleet records.
Admiral Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy: Explain how you remember that so exactly!
Lt. Commander Data: I remember every fact I am exposed to, sir.
Admiral Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy: [looking at both sides of Data's head] I don't see no points on your ears, boy, but you sound like a Vulcan.
Lt. Commander Data: No, sir. I am an android.
Admiral Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy: Hmph. Almost as bad.'
'Data: [uses a device in his arm to open a door] Open sesame! You could say I have a magnetic personality.
[laughs at his joke]
Data: Humor! I love it!'
'Lt. Commander Data: Spot, you are disrupting my ability to work.
[he puts Spot to the floor, but she jumps back on Data's desk]
Spot: Meow.
Lt. Commander Data: Vamoose, ye little varmint! ~ Star Trek The Next Generation
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Star Trek The Next Generation
The human race is a remarkable creature, one with great potential, and I hope that 'Star Trek' has helped to show us what we can be if we believe in ourselves and our abilities. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Gene Roddenberry
If you haven't guessed yet, my family is made up of ultra-nerds. This is not necessarily a bad thing. We play games like Scrabble and watch documentaries together. I have always known that I am going to college. Yet, there are times when it can get a little embarrassing. As Mom admits, "Re-enacting is the final step before Star Trek conventions." In a couple of years, my family will probably be doing that, too. ~ Maya Van Wagenen
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Maya Van Wagenen
In the fifth season [of Star Trek: The Next Generation] viewers will see more of shipboard life [including] gay crew members in day-to-day circumstances. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Gene Roddenberry
'Star Trek' was always a little bit closed emotionally. I never connected to the characters. ~ J.J. Abrams
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by J.J. Abrams
'The Next Generation' was a lot of fun for a while, and then it wasn't a lot of fun. The reason it wasn't a lot of fun was that this one was going to be a guaranteed hit. The original 'Star Trek' was never a guaranteed hit. ~ David Gerrold
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by David Gerrold
["The Devil in the Dark"] impressed me because it presented the idea, unusual in science fiction then and now, that something weird, and even dangerous, need not be malevolent. That is a lesson that many of today's politicians have yet to learn. ~ Arthur C. Clarke
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Arthur C. Clarke
The professor is stumped about why the decline is happening with the wolves and what, if anything, we can do to help them. You see, the problem is we've let nature take its course here. We observe but don't interfere. Kind of like the Prime Directive in Star Trek. ~ Marie Zhuikov
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Marie Zhuikov
I can't deal with the ears in 'Star Trek.' I only saw the first 'Star Wars' movie, and I don't think I saw an entire 'Star Trek' TV show, and I certainly didn't see the movie. I like 'Andy Griffith' and 'Deadwood.' ~ Clyde Edgerton
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Clyde Edgerton
He's eating like a Neanderthal," Emilia whispered to her mother. "Do men usually regress while in the wild?" Amusement danced in her golden-brown eyes. Just to mess with her, I groaned even louder and shoved the last third of the burger in my mouth all at once. Kim grinned. "Don't worry. I don't think it's permanent. Once he's back in his man-lair, he'll be guzzling beer and watching Darth Vader on Star Trek in no time." Emilia and I both turned to her, aghast at her blatant error - every nerd's nightmare. Kim held up her hands in surrender. "Kidding! ~ Brenna Aubrey
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Brenna Aubrey
I know stuff about 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Star Wars,' but 'Star Trek,' I don't know. ~ Kunal Nayyar
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Kunal Nayyar
"Star Trek" expands almost instinctively - the more information you seek from it, the more it gives. It also has the benefit of taking place in our future, our mutual destinies as occupants of a peaceful, non-polluted Earth. ~ Hank Stuever
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Hank Stuever
The Firefly universe was anchored in a sector adjacent to the Star Wars galaxy, with a detailed re-creation of the Star Trek universe in the sector adjacent to that. ~ Ernest Cline
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Ernest Cline
Live Long and Prosper ~ Star Trek: The Original Series Episode Guide Team
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Star Trek: The Original Series Episode Guide Team
I've been a huge fan of virtually every incarnation and spin-off of the 'Star Trek' franchise (don't get me started on 'Voyager,' though), but there's something about the purity of the original series that really appeals to me. ~ Chris Roberson
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Chris Roberson
During my first few months of Facebooking, I discovered that my page had fostered a collective nostalgia for specific cultural icons. These started, unsurprisingly, within the realm of science fiction and fantasy. They commonly included a pointy-eared Vulcan from a certain groundbreaking 1960s television show.

Just as often, though, I found myself sharing images of a diminutive, ancient, green and disarmingly wise Jedi Master who speaks in flip-side down English. Or, if feeling more sinister, I'd post pictures of his black-cloaked, dark-sided, heavy-breathing nemesis. As an aside, I initially received from Star Trek fans considerable "push-back," or at least many raised Spock brows, when I began sharing images of Yoda and Darth Vader. To the purists, this bordered on sacrilege.. But as I like to remind fans, I was the only actor to work within both franchises, having also voiced the part of Lok Durd from the animated show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

It was the virality of these early posts, shared by thousands of fans without any prodding from me, that got me thinking. Why do we love Spock, Yoda and Darth Vader so much? And what is it about characters like these that causes fans to click "like" and "share" so readily?

One thing was clear: Cultural icons help people define who they are today because they shaped who they were as children. We all "like" Yoda because we all loved The Empire Strikes Back, probably watched it many times, and can reci ~ George Takei
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by George Takei
They're cloaking," I said, as the pieces clicked into place. "They're using Iron glamour to twist the light around themselves so they appear invisible." I felt a thrill of discovery, of knowing I was right. All those years of watching Star Trek had finally paid off. ~ Julie Kagawa
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Julie Kagawa
Just because I'm a reporter doesn't mean I don't get to have an opinion about people."
"And your opinion of me is?"
"Very low."
His eyes narrowed infinitesimally. "Is it my hair?"
I flinched back, automatically checking out his hair. "No. There's nothing wrong with your hair."
"You don't like Star Wars?" He gestured to his shirt. "You're a Trekkie? You should know, I'm an equal opportunity space drama aficionado, whether it be BattleSTAR Galactica, STAR Trek, or STAR - "
"I get it, you like science fiction."
"Ah ha!" He lifted his index finger between us.
"Ah ha, what?"
"You're a fantasy reader, aren't you? That's what's going on. What's your favorite TV show? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, right?"
I lifted an eyebrow and crossed my arms, disliking that he'd guessed correctly. "What I read and watch isn't the central issue."
"Have you received your Hogwarts letter?" he asked, and his tone was so serious, I almost mistook it for a real question ~ Penny Reid
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Penny Reid
Well, the whole history of Star Trek is the market demand. ~ George Takei
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by George Takei
All the people in Star Trek will always be known as those characters. And what characters to have attached to your name in life! The show is such a phenomenon all over the world. ~ Nichelle Nichols
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Nichelle Nichols
Deanna's job (as counselor) is to keep us from deluding ourselves. ~ Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode Guide Team
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Star Trek: The Next Generation Episode Guide Team
Star Trek speaks to some basic human needs: that there is a tomorrow - it's not all going to be over with a big flash and a bomb; that the human race is improving; that we have things to be proud of as humans. No, ancient astronauts did not build the pyramids - human beings built them, because they're clever and they work hard. And Star Trek is about those things. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Gene Roddenberry
For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain. If people need religion, ignore them and maybe they will ignore you, and you can go on with your life. It wasn't until I was beginning to do Star Trek that the subject of religion arose. What brought it up was that people were saying that I would have a chaplain on board the Enterprise. I replied, No, we don't. ~ Gene Roddenberry
Star Trek The Menagerie quotes by Gene Roddenberry
It was like those old Star Trek sets - you ignored the polystyrene boulders and painted sky to concentrate on watching Kirk pace around like a caged tiger. Well, I always had, anyway. The man even managed to make those awful uniforms look sexy. ~ Josephine Myles
