The Man who has not Music in his Soul, Or is not touch'd with Concord of sweet Sounds, Is fit for Treasons, Strategems, and Spoils, The Motions of his Mind are dull as Night, And his Affections dark as Erebus: Let no such Man be trusted.17 Copying a passage ~ Kevin J. Hayes
Spoils quotes by Kevin J. Hayes
Auctions are a venerable selling institution, in use since the time of Herodotus. The word comes from the Latin auctus, meaning to increase. An obscure term for auction, one guaranteed to impress friends and neighbors, is the Latin word subhastare. It is the conjunction of sub, meaning "under," and hasta, meaning "spear." After a military victory, a Roman soldier would plant his spear in the ground to mark the location of his spoils. Later, he would put these goods up for sale by auction.
¹The highest bidder was called the emptor, whence the term caveat emptor. ~ Rakesh V. Vohra
Spoils quotes by Rakesh V. Vohra
There is never a restless night for the dark soul. They sleep well within a destiny sealed and accepted in trade for the spoils of the earth ~ Carl Henegan
Spoils quotes by Carl Henegan
At some point, while you were roaming the globe, making treaties and dividing the spoils of war, I quietly declared my own independence. I am the sovereign nation of Clio now. And there will be no terms of surrender. ~ Tessa Dare
Spoils quotes by Tessa Dare
At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities, that have prevailed by associating themselves with auxiliaries whose objects often differed from their own; and this association, which is always dangerous, has been sometimes disastrous, by giving to opponents just grounds of opposition, and by kindling dispute over the spoils in the hour of success. ~ John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton
Spoils quotes by John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton
Let's be honest: nothing spoils 'The Walking Dead' quite like watching 'The Walking Dead.' ~ David Harsanyi
Spoils quotes by David Harsanyi
At this point they came in sight of thirty forty windmills that there are on plain, and as soon as Don Quixote saw them he said to his squire, "Fortune is arranging matters for us better than we could have shaped our desires ourselves, for look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our fortunes; for this is righteous warfare, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth." "What giants?" said Sancho Panza. ~ Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Spoils quotes by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra
Even if just once, the inner intent spoils towards someone, as in 'I will put him in his place', it is a statement made with God as your witness, so how can it go to waste? There is no problem if the inner intent does not spoil. Everything will become silent. Everything will stop. ~ Dada Bhagwan
Spoils quotes by Dada Bhagwan
Fir : it contains a great deal of air and fire with very little moisture and the earthy, so that, as its natural properties are of the lighter class, it is not heavy. Hence, its consistence being naturally stiff, it does not easily bend under the load, and keeps its straightness when used in the framework. But it contains so much heat that it generates and encourages decay, which spoils it; and it also kindles fire quickly because of the air in its body, which is so open that it takes in fire and so gives out a great flame. ~ Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
Spoils quotes by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
If he displeases us, we may express our distaste, and we may stand aloof from a person as well as from a thing that displeases us; but we shall not therefore feel called on to make his life uncomfortable. We shall reflect that he already bears, or will bear, the whole penalty of his error; if he spoils his life by mismanagement, we shall not, for that reason, desire to spoil it further [...]. He may be to us an object of pity, perhaps of dislike, but not of anger or resentment; we shall not treat him like an enemy of society: the worst we shall think ourselves justified in doing is leaving him to himself. ~ John Stuart Mill
Spoils quotes by John Stuart Mill
Time spoils quickly in here, and it smells like rotten meat. Every day adds a little more weight, barely noticeable at first, but eventually it will crush you to death. In this place your life can be measured by how long you can keep fighting. The ghouls can sense it if you have any life behind your eyes, and they move in to extinguish it. The guards, the prisoners, the administration - the energy spirals downward forever, creating a hellish staircase that leads nowhere. The most frightening part is how they're all too thick to realize what they're doing. They seem to believe that if they keep digging in the same hole, they'll eventually reach heaven. ~ Damien Echols
Spoils quotes by Damien Echols
Nothing spoils romance so much as a sense of humor in the woman ~ Oscar Wilde
Spoils quotes by Oscar Wilde
Our current society is designed to achieve growth of industrial output and redistributing its
spoils. Future society must expand upon today's society's way of functioning; its institutions must be geared towards achieving more psychological goals. More goals of the soul. ~ Hanzi Freinacht
Spoils quotes by Hanzi Freinacht
Be he poor, be he friendless, here he may acquire distinction, the reward of merit alone. Knowledge to him will here unfold her ample page; all the spoils of time, all the treasures of thought, and all the bright domains of a glorious future, may here become his. ~ Charles Nicholson
Spoils quotes by Charles Nicholson
To the victors belong the spoils. ~ Andrew Jackson
Spoils quotes by Andrew Jackson
I am convinced, by repeated observation, that marbles, lime-stones, chalks, marls, clays, sand, and almost all terrestrial substances, wherever situated, are full of shells and other spoils of the ocean. ~ Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte De Buffon
Spoils quotes by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte De Buffon
Scalia would bring the spoils of a recent hunting trip. "Scalia kills it and Marty cooks it," said guest and former Bush solicitor general Theodore Olson in 2007. "I never heard them talk about anything political or ideological, because there would be no point, ~ Irin Carmon
Spoils quotes by Irin Carmon
Enacting same-sex civil marriage would therefore not be an expansion of the institution of marriage, but a redefinition. Finishing what policies like "no-fault" divorce began, and thus entrenching them, it would finally replace the conjugal view with the revisionist view, elevating the latter to the dignity of legal principle. In so doing, it would multiply the marriage revolution's moral and cultural spoils, and make them harder than ever to recover. Or so we shall argue. ~ Sherif Girgis
Spoils quotes by Sherif Girgis
Some kind of internecine conflict, over the spoils. ~ Lee Child
Spoils quotes by Lee Child
Ah! thus man spoils Heaven's glorious works with blood! ~ Charlotte Turner Smith
Spoils quotes by Charlotte Turner Smith
The greater the battle - the greater the spoils. ~ T.D. Jakes
Spoils quotes by T.D. Jakes
Knowledge often spoils devotion. ~ Kate Horsley
Spoils quotes by Kate Horsley
In my opinion, it is in the smile of a face that the essence of what we call beauty lies. If the smile heightens the charm of the face, then the face is a beautiful one. If the smile does not alter the face, then the face is an ordinary one. But if the smile spoils the face, then the face is an ugly one indeed. Mamma ~ Leo Tolstoy
Spoils quotes by Leo Tolstoy
Bertie stared at his mother. She spoils things, he thought. All she ever does is spoil things.
He had not started this conversation, and it was not his fault that they were now talking about Grey Owl. He sounded rather a nice man to Bertie. Any why should he not dress up in feathers and live in the forests if that was what he wanted to do? It was typical of his mother to try to spoil Grey Owl's fun. ~ Alexander McCall Smith
Spoils quotes by Alexander McCall Smith
Mapping out dozens of deeply focused trips around the world has convinced me that preparation no more spoils the chance for spontaneity and serendipity than discipline ruins the opportunity for genuine self-expression in sports, acting, or the tea ceremony. ~ Phil Cousineau
Spoils quotes by Phil Cousineau
Uncharitableness spoils the best Gains, and two to one but it entails a Curse upon the Possessors. ~ Various
Spoils quotes by Various
The spoils of vice are a burdensome responsibility. - Will
Yet one you seem strangely able to bear. - Jem ~ Cassandra Clare
Spoils quotes by Cassandra Clare
In most couples there is the person who wins and the person who doesn't. The winner isn't necessarily stronger or smarter or righter. The winner is the person who won't give up, and the non-winner ("loser" is not the correct word for the person who does not win), at a certain point, realizes the battle is a silly one, and the spoils are not worth the extended warfare. ~ Heidi Julavits
Spoils quotes by Heidi Julavits
By the light which the Holy Ghost will give you by His dear Spouse, Mary, you will understand your own evil, your corruption, and your incapacity for anything good, which is not God's free gift to us, either as Author of nature or of grace. In consequence of this knowledge, you will despise yourself. You will only think of yourself with horror. You will regard yourself as a snail, that spoils everything with its slime; or a toad, that poisons everything with its venom; or as a spiteful serpent, only seeking to deceive. In other words, the humble Mary will communicate to you a portion of her profound humility, which will make you despise yourself, despise nobody else, but love to be despised yourself. ~ Louis De Montfort
Spoils quotes by Louis De Montfort
He would never be a musical genius, but he could be a person a musical genius loved. Such were the spoils of love, he realized, that her success was also, by some odd refraction, his. ~ Nathan Hill
Spoils quotes by Nathan Hill
Just as eating against one's will is injurious to health, so studying without a liking for it spoils the memory, and it retains nothing it takes in. ~ Leonardo Da Vinci
Spoils quotes by Leonardo Da Vinci
Whatever noblest things the mind received,
More and more foreign matter spoils the theme;
And when the good of this world is achieved,
What's better seems an idle dream.
That gave us our life, the noblest urges
Are petrified in the earth's vulgar surges ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Spoils quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Historically, art has always had a market. When one medieval fiefdom defeated another they would drag back its jewels, gold, tapestries and art objects as the spoils of war. Art equaled power, riches and culture. ~ Arne Glimcher
Spoils quotes by Arne Glimcher
Google is the enemy. I would tell that to anyone who enjoys any TV show like 'Game of Thrones' to avoid it; it spoils so many storylines. ~ Richard Madden
Spoils quotes by Richard Madden
Whatever the situation may be, in the recollection of death there is reward and merit. For even the man engrossed in the world benefits from it by acquiring an aversion to this world, since it spoils his contentment and the fullness of his pleasure; and everything which spoils for man his pleasures and his appetites is one of the means of deliverance. ~ Al-Ghazali
Spoils quotes by Al-Ghazali
I believe in the old warrior's credo that "to the victor go the spoils." ~ Pope Francis
Spoils quotes by Pope Francis
When people break off relationships, they break them both from the outside and from within. The external spoils because of circumstances, but the inner [inside] must not spoil. ~ Dada Bhagwan
Spoils quotes by Dada Bhagwan
The collective sign of relief heaved on V-J Day ought to have inspired Hollywood to release a flood of "happily ever after" films. But some victors didn't feel too good about their spoils. They'd seen too much by then. Too much warfare, too much poverty, too much greed, all in the service of rapacious progress. A bundle of unfinished business lingered from the Depression - nagging questions about ingrained venality, mean human nature, and the way unchecked urban growth threw society dangerously out of whack. Writers and directors responded by delivering gritty, bitter dramas that slapped our romantic illusions in the face and put the boot to the throat of the smug bourgeoisie. Still, plenty of us took it - and liked it. ~ Eddie Muller
Spoils quotes by Eddie Muller
A herd of prairie-wolves will enter a field of melons and quarrel about the division of the spoils as fiercely and noisily as so many politicians. ~ William Cullen Bryant
Spoils quotes by William Cullen Bryant
Lessons learned are like bridges burned you only need to cross them but once. Is the knowledge gained worth the price of the pain, are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt? ~ Dan Fogelberg
Spoils quotes by Dan Fogelberg
Very slowly, using only two fingers, Annabeth drew her dagger. Instead of dropping it, she tossed it as far as she could into the water.
Octavian made a squeaking sound. "What was that for? I didn't say toss it! That could've been evidence. Or spoils of war!"
Annabeth tried for a dumb-blonde smile, like: Oh, silly me. Nobody who knew her would have been fooled. But Octavian seemed to buy it. He huffed in exasperation.
"You other two…" He pointed his blade at Hazel and Piper. "Put your weapons on the dock. No funny bus - "
All around the Romans, Charleston Harbor erupted like a Las Vegas fountain putting on a show. When the wall of seawater subsided, the three Romans were in the bay, spluttering and frantically trying to stay afloat in their armor. Percy stood on the dock, holding Annabeth's dagger.
"You dropped this," he said, totally poker-faced.
Annabeth threw her arms around him. "I love you!"
"Guys," Hazel interrupted. She had a little smile on her face. "We need to hurry. ~ Rick Riordan
Spoils quotes by Rick Riordan
If kept dry, a chocolate with a high cacao content, I've discovered, rarely spoils. ~ Bill Buford
Spoils quotes by Bill Buford
Republican and Democrat are simply two different factions of the same ruling party, and their congressional battles are primarily over political spoils, not political ideology ~ Vox Day
Spoils quotes by Vox Day
It's impossible to imagine my mother like that. I cannot imagine her softened, thawed, decayed, becoming sweeter as she spoils. I imagine her trapped in a mirror instead. A permanent image of her locked into a rectangle of hard brightness, open-eyed. ~ Laura Kasischke
Spoils quotes by Laura Kasischke
One bad habit often spoils a dozen good ones. ~ Napoleon Hill
Spoils quotes by Napoleon Hill
Money is a very pleasant thing, Willie, and I think you can trade almost anything for it wisely except the work you really want to do. If you sell out your time for a comfortable life, and give up your natural work, I think you lose the exchange. There remains an inner uneasiness that spoils the comforts. ~ Herman Wouk
Spoils quotes by Herman Wouk
Because I actively enjoy sleeping, dreams, the unexplainable dialogues that take place in my head as I am drifting off, all that, I tell myself that lying down to an afternoon nap that goes on and on through eternity is not something to be concerned about. What spoils this pleasant fancy is the recollection that when people are dead they don't read books. This I find unbearable. ~ William Maxwell
Spoils quotes by William Maxwell
Here's a suggestion you might want to pay attention to. Try to forget everything you learned on Oprah and if you can't do that, at least refrain from regurgitating that crap at me. It spoils my appetite. ~ Samantha Young
Spoils quotes by Samantha Young
Roque ... lined his men up and had them produce all the clothing, jewels, money, and other objects that they had stolen since the last time they had divided the spoils. Having made a hasty appraisal and reduced to terms of money those items that could not be divided, he split the whole into shares with such equity and exactitude that in not a single instance did he go beyond or fall short of a strict distributive justice. They were all well satisfied with the payment received, indeed they were quite well pleased; and Roque then turned to Don Quixote. ~ Miguel De Cervantes
Spoils quotes by Miguel De Cervantes
You are getting to be rather conceited my dear, and it is quite time you set about correcting it. You have good many little gifts and virtues, but there is no need of parading them, for conceit spoils the finest genius. There is not much danger that real talent or goodness will be overlooked long; even if it is, the consciousness of possessing and using well should satisfy one, and the great charm of all power is modesty. -Mrs. March ~ Louisa May Alcott
Spoils quotes by Louisa May Alcott
I don't like any shows very much, if you want to know the truth. They're not as bad as movies, but they're certainly nothing to rave about. In the first place, I hate actors. They never act like people. They just think they do. Some of the good ones do, in a very slight way, but it's not in a way that's fun to watch. And if the actor's really good, you can always tell he knows he's good, and that spoils it. ~ J.D. Salinger
Spoils quotes by J.D. Salinger
Just as a spring, through the continual pressure of a foreign body, at last loses its elasticity, so does the mind if it has another person's thoughts continually forced upon it. And just as one spoils the stomach by overfeeding and thereby impairs the whole body, so can one overload and choke the mind by giving it too much nourishment. For the more one reads the fewer are the traces left of what one has read; the mind is like a tablet that has been written over and over. Hence it is impossible to reflect; and it is only by reflection that one can assimilate what one has read if one reads straight ahead without pondering over it later, what has been read does not take root, but is for the most part lost. Indeed, it is the same with mental as with bodily food: scarcely the fifth part of what a man takes is assimilated; the remainder passes off in evaporation, respiration, and the like. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Spoils quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
Writing of that caliber spoils you for any other kind of writing for awhile. But that's probably good. ~ Mercedes Ruehl
Spoils quotes by Mercedes Ruehl
I cannot articulate enough to express my dislike to people who think that understanding spoils your experience ... How would they know? ~ Marvin Minsky
Spoils quotes by Marvin Minsky
Or is it that slow paced evil creeps in when it espies and envies happiness, and then takes a deliberate foul delight in spoiling it? ~ Leslie W.P. Garland
Spoils quotes by Leslie W.P. Garland
Grace and truth are distinct and yet they are not mutually exclusive. But when people focus on one without the other, they usually fall into two extremes. They either embrace a gospel of "grace without truth" or a gospel of "truth without grace".
Grace without truth is not really grace. Truth without grace is not really truth. Grace without truth pampers. Truth without grace hammers.
Grace without truth is love without correction. Truth without grace is correction without love. Grace without truth is mercy without justice. Truth without grace is justice without mercy.
Grace without truth is soft and spoils people. Truth without grace is harsh and crushes people. Grace without truth is freedom without responsibility. Truth without grace is responsibility without freedom.
Either extremes are neither of Christ or the gospel. ~ Richard PW Tan
Spoils quotes by Richard PW Tan
Empty pocket teaches you a Million things in Life, But full pocket spoils you in a Million ways.... ~ Suraj Mhetri
Spoils quotes by Suraj Mhetri
The politicians of New York as not so fastidious as some gentlemen are, as to disclosing the principles on which they act. They boldly preach what they practice ... if they are defeated, they expect to retire from office. If they are successful, they claim, as a matter of right, the advantages of success. They see nothing wrong in the rule that to the victor belongs the spoils of the enemy. ~ William L. Marcy
Spoils quotes by William L. Marcy
Strategic planning is not strategic thinking. Indeed, strategic planning often spoils strategic thinking, causing managers to confuse real vision with the manipulation of numbers. ~ Henry Mintzberg
Spoils quotes by Henry Mintzberg
Earthly goods are given to be used, not to be collected. In the wilderness God gave Israel the manna every day, and they had no need to worry about food and drink. Indeed, if they kept any of the manna over until the next day, it went bad. In the same way, the disciple must receive his portion from God every day. If he stores it up as a permanent possession, he spoils not only the gift, but himself as well, for he sets his heart on accumulated wealth, and makes it a barrier between himself and God. Where our treasure is, there is our trust, our security, our consolation and our God. Hoarding is idolatry. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Spoils quotes by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
If Time have any wrinkle graven there; If any, be a satire to decay, And make time's spoils despised every where. Give my love fame faster than Time wastes life, So thou prevent'st his scythe and crooked knife. ~ William Shakespeare
Spoils quotes by William Shakespeare
While forbidden fruit is said to taste sweeter, it usually spoils faster. ~ Abigail Van Buren
Spoils quotes by Abigail Van Buren
Power is what spoils people. Yes, it seems to me that the seeking after power is the great danger and the great corruptor of mankind. ~ Baldur Von Schirach
Spoils quotes by Baldur Von Schirach
What comes through war is given back through war. All spoils will be retaken, all plunder will be dispersed. All victors will be defeated and every city filled with prey will be sacked in its turn. ~ Joseph Joubertber
Spoils quotes by Joseph Joubertber
It was a good hanging," said Syme reminiscently. "I think it spoils it when they tie their feet together. I like to see them kicking. And above all, at the end, the tongue sticking right out, and blue a quite bright blue. That's the detail that appeals to me. ~ George Orwell
Spoils quotes by George Orwell
Being smart spoils a lot of things, doesn't it? ~ Thomas Harris
Spoils quotes by Thomas Harris
One does not dislike the half of everything. You bore me, you young people, when you talk about one sex or the other, as if they were separate things. There is only one human entity and that is a man and a woman. The man is the silhouette, the woman is the detail. The one often spoils or makes the other. But apart they are so much material. Don't be a fool. ~ Margery Allingham
Spoils quotes by Margery Allingham
This I consider to be one of the essences of life. It never warns us if something bad is going to happen and it never spoils the surprise by giving a hint about the happy moments that we are going to come across soon. ~ Sreehari
Spoils quotes by Sreehari
Nothing spoils human nature more than false zeal. The good nature of a heathen is more God-like than the furious zeal of a Christian. ~ Benjamin Whichcote
Spoils quotes by Benjamin Whichcote
Books are essential to me. I cannot live without them, because I cannot live without reading.

But, Arry has just said to me, you can always borrow them so why buy them?

I don't buy books just to collect them. I'm not a collector. I'm not interested in them as objects that might be valuable one day, regardless of what they are about, nor do I want to own every book ever written by one particular author or on one particular subject. I buy them because I want to read them, and I keep them because I've read them.

I can't afford to buy all the ones I'd like to, so I have to borrow quite a few, and this has taught me something about myself, which I haven't heard anyone else admit. When I've read a book which I really like, a book which MATTERS, I feel it belongs to me. I mean, the book itself, the copy I've read. It's as if I pour myself onto the pages as I read them, all my thoughts and emotions, so that by the time I've finished that copy holds inside it the essence of my reading.

A borrowed book has to be returned, so I lose this essence of myself when I give it back. Besides which, a borrowed book has inside it something of everyone else who's read it. They've fingered it and pawed over it, breathed on it, done heaven knows what else as well as read it. And knowing this spoils my reading. The other readers get in my way. I can feel their presence on the cover and on the pages. They even make it smell differently from my own books. In ~ Aidan Chambers
Spoils quotes by Aidan Chambers

-Heroes of Olympus ~ Rick Riordan
Spoils quotes by Rick Riordan
Thousands of sheep, cattle, and donkeys were also cleansed through water as spoils of war and divided among the peoples. So too the thousands of shekels of items of silver, gold, bronze, and iron were purified through fire and also apportioned out to the tribes. On the final day of purification, Joshua and Caleb were getting ready to return to camp. They were in Joshua's tent eating a small meal of goat and bread. Joshua took a sip of wine from his goatskin flask. Caleb watched him closely. He had been watching Joshua closely these seven days. Joshua looked refreshed. And he looked different. Like he was a changed man from the one whose pursuit of rigid excessive holiness rose to a crescendo of self-righteous vengeance and hate. He had come to the end of himself and was crushed by his own unrighteousness. ~ Brian Godawa
Spoils quotes by Brian Godawa
I think it should be done over, Buddy. …Please make peace with your wit. It's not going to go away, Buddy. To dump it on your own advice would be as bad and unnatural as dumping your adjectives and your adverbs because Prof. B. wants you to. What does he know about it? What do you really know about your own wit?

I've been sitting here tearing up notes to you. I keep starting to say things like 'This one is wonderfully constructed,' and 'The conversation between the two cops is terrific.' So I'm hedging. I'm not sure why. I started to get a little nervous right after you began to read. It sounded like the beginning of something your arch-enemy Bob B. calls a rattling good story. Don't you think he would call this a step in the right direction? Doesn't that worry you? Even what is funny about the woman on the back of the truck doesn't sound like something you think is funny. It sounds much more like something that you think is universally considered funny. I feel gypped. Does that make you mad? You can say our relatedness spoils my judgement. It worries me enough. But I'm also just a reader. Are you a writer or just a writer of rattling good stories. I mind getting a rattling good story from you. ~ J.D. Salinger
Spoils quotes by J.D. Salinger
Life is gamble, It's harsh and painful most of the time, and it's not for the timid. Spoils go to the victor, not to the one who doesn't even show up for the battle.
-Acheron ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Spoils quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
But what can women do in times of war? They help, they cheer, they inspire, and if their cause is lost they must accept death or worse. Few women have the courage for self-destruction. "To the victor belong the spoils," and women have ever been the spoils of war. ~ Zane Grey
Spoils quotes by Zane Grey
He who acts, spoils; he who grasps, lets slip. ~ Lao-Tzu
Spoils quotes by Lao-Tzu
If we can model the ability to embody nonfear and nonattachment, it is more precious than any money or material wealth. Fear spoils our lives and makes us miserable. We cling to objects and people, like a drowning person clings to any object that floats by. By practicing nonattachment and sharing this wisdom with others, we give the gift of nonfear. Everything is impermanent. This moment passes. The object of our craving walks away, but we can know happiness is always possible. Intoxicants ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Spoils quotes by Thich Nhat Hanh
It is only the sudden and unpredictable appearance of comets that spoils the immutable celestial sphere. ~ John Pipkin
Spoils quotes by John Pipkin
Drunkenness, spoils health, dismounts the mind, and unmans the man. ~ William Penn
Spoils quotes by William Penn
When you walk with trash, you end up smelling the same. ~ Anthony Liccione
Spoils quotes by Anthony Liccione
The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistical and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary, it makes them , for the most part, humble, tolerant and kind. Failure makes people bitter and cruel. ~ W. Somerset Maugham
Spoils quotes by W. Somerset Maugham
Rage makes a man sick, my son. It spoils his appetite for life and keeps him from sleep at night. We cannot change our world, so we must look for the good things in life and enjoy those to the full. ~ Wilbur Smith
Spoils quotes by Wilbur Smith
Reasons are the spoils of victory. When you've destroyed the enemy, then your leaders write down the reasons in books, and give moving speeches about them. If you've done your job, then there aren't any of the enemy left to dispute your leader's reasons. At least not until the next war. ~ Terry Goodkind
Spoils quotes by Terry Goodkind
I should like to make life beautiful--I mean everybody's life. And then all this immense expense of art, that seems somehow to lie outside life and make it no better for the world, pains one. It spoils my enjoyment of anything when I am made to think that most people are shut out from it."

I call that the fanaticism of sympathy," said Will, impetuously. "You might say the same of landscape, of poetry, of all refinement. If you carried it out you ought to be miserable in your own goodness, and turn evil that you might have no advantage over others. The best piety is to enjoy--when you can. You are doing the most then to save the earth's character as an agreeable planet. And enjoyment radiates. It is of no use to try and take care of all the world; that is being taken care of when you feel delight--in art or in anything else. Would you turn all the youth of the world into a tragic chorus, wailing and moralising over misery? I suspect that you have some false belief in the virtues of misery, and want to make your life a martyrdom. ~ George Eliot
Spoils quotes by George Eliot
Brandy and water spoils two good things. ~ Charles Lamb
Spoils quotes by Charles Lamb
Thus says the fool: Association with men spoils the character, especially when one has none. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Spoils quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
The military works like government; is financed like government, and sports the same inherent malignancies and perverse incentives of government, down to the racial-spoils system. ~ Ilana Mercer
Spoils quotes by Ilana Mercer
The small meannesses bred by the law of competition corrode men's character as rust spoils steel. ~ Frances E. Willard
Spoils quotes by Frances E. Willard
Life is a gamble, Vane. It's harsh and painful most of the time, and it's not for the timid. Spoils go to the victor, not to the one who doesn't even show up for the battle. ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Spoils quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
You're well enough looked after now' says Farouq. 'We are your friends. Don't we care about you? All this bitterness, it's in your own mind. To be accepted as a human being, you must behave like one. The more human you act, the more human you'll be.' He spoils the effect of this decent speech by adding with a smirk, 'Four-foot cunt. ~ Indra Sinha
Spoils quotes by Indra Sinha
To overcome in battle, and subdue Nations, and bring home spoils with infinite Man-slaughter, shall be held the highest pitch Of human glory. ~ John Milton
Spoils quotes by John Milton
Mrs. Pang was once a nanny for me, and she spoils me the way I imagined kindhearted women would spoil an orphan, loving me for whom I am, exactly the opposite of my mother, whose love I have to earn with great effort and with little success. ~ Yiyun Li
Spoils quotes by Yiyun Li
History books report one war after another. 'History' is the dates of wars, who won and who lost. But in truth, no one ever wins a war. Someone obtained the spoils, but no one wins.

'Intermediate Guide To Meditation ~ Kriyananda
Spoils quotes by Kriyananda
You know all my life I've hated funerals. The fuss and bother never brings anybody back. It just spoils remembering them as they really are. And when I see people actually facing it that way, I have to act like a sap. ~ Jules Furthman
Spoils quotes by Jules Furthman
Party politics in modern democratic society means pandering to a wide variety of different groups and sympathizing with their often quite base motives, such as revenge, power, booty, and spoils, to maintain the necessary level of support. ~ Randal Marlin
Spoils quotes by Randal Marlin
If you achieve your goal, you celebrate and feel terrific, but only until you realize you just lost the thing that gave you purpose and direction.
