Loser lit antiheroes aren't well intentioned or earnest; they don't care whether you like them or not. They're self-mocking, ironic and inventive; they narrate their downfalls with manic wordplay, rampant metaphors, wisecracks, and escalating flights of spleen-fueled lyricism. ~ Kate Christensen
Spleen quotes by Kate Christensen
Filters out bacteria and parasites from the blood and lymph that have been killed by white blood cells. 5) Acts as a reservoir for blood and platelets that can be released when needed (blood loss, infection, hemorrhage, and strenuous exercise). These are released via signals of epinephrine from the adrenals and sympathetics. It has been found that splenic tissue can sometimes regenerate after removal of the spleen. Howard Pearson at Yale University School of Medicine found that 13 of 22 children who had their spleens removed due to trauma had evidence of forming new splenic tissue within 1-8 years. It is hypothesized that a few old spleen cells left behind from the surgery triggered the regeneration. ~ Michael Lebowitz
Spleen quotes by Michael Lebowitz
No ruler should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no general should fight a battle simply out of pique. ~ Sun Tzu
Spleen quotes by Sun Tzu
Oh, good, I'd hate to be spleenless". He closed his eyes again. "What the hell does a spleen do anyway?" - Kellan Kyle ~ S.C. Stephens
Spleen quotes by S.C. Stephens
Blessedness is within us all
It lies upon the long scaffold
Patrols the vaporous hall
In our pursuits, though still, we venture forth
Hoping to grasp a handful of cloud and return
Unscathed, cloud in hand. We encounter
Space, fist, violin, or this - an immaculate face
Of a boy, somewhat wild, smiling in the sun.
He raises his hand, as if in carefree salute
Shading eyes that contain the thread of God.
Soon they will gather power, disenchantment
They will reflect enlightenment, agony
They will reveal the process of love
They will, in an hour alone, shed tears.
His mouth a circlet, a baptismal font
Opening wide as the lips of a damsel
Sounding the dizzying extremes.
The relativity of vein, the hip of unrest
For the sake of wing there is shoulder.
For symmetry there is blade.
He kneels, humiliates, he pierces her side.
Offering spleen to the wolves of the forest.
He races across the tiles, the human board.
Virility, coquetry all a game - well played.
Immersed in luminous disgrace, he lifts
As a slave, a nymph, a fabulous hood
As a rose, a thief of life, he will parade
Nude crowned with leaves, immortal.
He will sing of the body, his truth
He will increase the shining neck
Pluck airs toward our delight
Of the waning
The blossoming
The violent charade
But who will sing of him?
Who will sing of his blessedn ~ Patti Smith
Spleen quotes by Patti Smith
Read day and night, devour books - these sleeping pills - not to know but to forget! Through books you can retrace your way back to the origins of spleen, discarding history and its illusions. ~ Emil Cioran
Spleen quotes by Emil Cioran
One good, hearty laugh is a bombshell exploding in the right place, while spleen and discontent are a gun that kicks over the man who shoots it off. ~ Thomas De Witt Talmage
Spleen quotes by Thomas De Witt Talmage
The pleasure of hating, like a poisonous mineral, eats into the heart of religion, and turns it to ranking spleen and bigotry; it makes patriotism an excuse for carrying fire, pestilence, and famine into other lands: it leaves to virtue nothing but the spirit of censoriousness. ~ William Hazlitt
Spleen quotes by William Hazlitt
A few days into the illness, they'll get a rash. With Marburg and Ebola the throat and conjunctivae get inflamed and there are small transparent lesions like tapioca granules in the soft palate. Then they start to bleed with a paradoxical combination of blood clots and hemorrhaging. The clots lodge in the brain, liver, spleen, and the hemorrhaging accelerates until the body cavities fill up with blood. Death comes some six to seven days after the first symptom, either from a massive stroke, or from shock. ~ Patrick Lynch
Spleen quotes by Patrick Lynch
I can feel a better version of me somewhere in there - hidden behind a liver or attached to a bit of spleen ~ Gillian Flynn
Spleen quotes by Gillian Flynn
Advance our standards, set upon our foes;
Our ancient word of courage, fair Saint George,
Inspire us with the spleen of fiery dragons! ~ William Shakespeare
Spleen quotes by William Shakespeare
My lawyers will fricassee your testicles for breakfast. And if you dare board my plane without a warrant, your spleen will follow. ~ Dan Brown
Spleen quotes by Dan Brown
Superstition is the spleen of the soul. ~ Alexander Pope
Spleen quotes by Alexander Pope
If it is to your advantage, make a forward move; if not, stay where you are. ~ Sun Tzu
Spleen quotes by Sun Tzu
I told them all, "If possible, I would be here with only you, forever. But I am a man who toils, and I must go where I must. We need currency for famous nightclubs, yes? I am doing something I hate for you. This is what it means to be in love. So do not spleen me." But to be truthful, I was not even the smallest portion sad to go to Lutsk to translate for Jonathan Safran Foer. As I mentioned before, my life is ordinary. But I had never been to Lutsk, or any of the multitudinous petite villages that still endure after the war. I desired to see new things. I desired to experience volumes. And I would be electrical to meet an American. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Spleen quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
If your breath is very deep in the lungs, it will give you a good red blood. Good red blood, with the oxygen, is quite sufficiently empowered to take away impurities. When the lungs start clearing the blood, then the liver, spleen, and kidneys have much less work to do. ~ Harbhajan Singh Yogi
Spleen quotes by Harbhajan Singh Yogi
To The Reader Who Employs His Leisure Ill
Whoever you may be, I caution you against rashly defaming the author of this work, or cavilling in jest against him. Nay, do not silently reproach him in consequence of others' censure, nor employ your wit in foolish disapproval or false accusation. For, should Democritus Junior prove to be what he professes, even a kinsman of his elder namesake, or be ever so little of the same kidney, it is all up with you: he will become both accuser and judge of you in his petulant spleen, will dissipate you in jest, pulverize you with witticisms, and sacrifice you, I can promise you, to the God of Mirth.
Again I warn you against cavilling, lest, while you culumniate or disgracefully disparage Decmocritus Junior, who has no animosity against you, you should hear from some judicious friend the very words the people of Abdera heard of old from Hippocrates, when they held their well-deserving and popular fellow-citizen to be a madman: "Truly, it is you, Democritus, that are wise, while the people of Abdera are fools and madmen." You have no more sense than the people of Abdera. Having given you this warning in a few words, O reader who employ your liesure ill, farewell. ~ Robert Burton
Spleen quotes by Robert Burton
It is a way I have of driving off the spleen ~ Herman Melville
Spleen quotes by Herman Melville
Liberals claim to love gays when it allows them to vent their spleen at Republicans. But disagree with liberals and their first response is to call you gay. Liberals are gays' biggest champions on issues most gays couldn't care less about, like gay marriage or taxpayer funding of photos of men with bullwhips up their derrieres. But who has done more to out, embarrass, and destroy the lives of gay men who prefer to keep their orientation private than Democrats? Who is more intolerant of gays in the Republican Party than gays in the Democratic Party? ~ Ann Coulter
Spleen quotes by Ann Coulter
Well, excuse the hell out of me for trying to help. I heard a crash and thought someone was hurt. You could've fallen. On a pair of Scissors. Slit your jugular. How was I to know? Next time you're in need of life saving action, don't come to me…'Dan, help me, I've broken my spleen,' because you know what I'm going to say? 'Sorry about the spleen, dude, I have to stay in the back room for all of eternity. ~ Leah Rae Miller
Spleen quotes by Leah Rae Miller
Above the thighs in the abdomen there are two rows of five points on each side. They are henggu (K11), dahe (K12), qixue (K13), siman (K14), and zhongzhu (K15); wailing (ST26), daju (ST27), shuidao (ST28), guilai (ST29), and qichong (ST30). This is the pathway transversed by the kidney qi, therefore referred to as the thoroughfare of the kidneys. The liver, kidney, and spleen channels converge on the inside of the leg. The kidney channel counts six points on each leg, collectively called taichong, or the great thoroughfare. They consist of dazhong (K4), zhaohai (K6), fuliu (K7), jiaoxin (K8), zhubin ~ Maoshing Ni
Spleen quotes by Maoshing Ni
Now I am just an elderly lady who is full of spleen,
who humps around greater Boston in a God-awful hat,
who never lived and yet outlived her time,
hating men and dogs and Democrats. ~ Anne Sexton
Spleen quotes by Anne Sexton
The worst part was that the Brit's reportage was just spleen-filled editorializing on the lack of ethics in the valley's board-rooms (a favorite subject of hers, which no doubt accounted for his fellow-feeling), and it was also the crux of Kettlewell's schtick. The spectacle of an exec who talked ethics enraged Rat-Toothed more than the vilest baby-killers. He was the kind of revolutionary who liked his firing squads arranged in a circle. ~ Cory Doctorow
Spleen quotes by Cory Doctorow
If a faultless poem could be produced, I am satisfied it would tire the critics themselves; and annoy the whole reading world with the spleen. ~ Walter Scott
Spleen quotes by Walter Scott
Buy Fable! the book that rejuvenates your soul! makes your belly belly-laugh! turns your cares to dust! ... likewise your moods, woes an wounds! ... turns everything rosy, deflates spleen and bile! pocondria! not just any old work! not just any old words! Fable!
You gotta be categorical. ~ Louis Ferdinand Celine
Spleen quotes by Louis Ferdinand Celine
The Bible, itself the ultimate curse, is an in-depth profile of the divine spleen. ~ Ruth Hurmence Green
Spleen quotes by Ruth Hurmence Green
Not even. Bruised pretty good. The impact ruptured your spleen. They couldn't repair it." She gives a dismissive wave of her hand. "Don't worry, you don't need one. And if you did, they'd find you one, wouldn't they? It's everybody's job to keep you alive." "Is that ~ Suzanne Collins
Spleen quotes by Suzanne Collins
Why, the whole point, the real sting of it lay in the fact that continually, even in the moment of the acutest spleen, I was inwardly conscious with shame that I was not only not a spiteful but not even an embittered man, that I was simply scaring sparrows at random ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Spleen quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
There is nothing more galling to angry people than the coolness of those on whom they wish to vent their spleen. ~ Alexandre Dumas
Spleen quotes by Alexandre Dumas
A German or a Russian mamaloschen (mother tongue) pedigree made for two wildly different translations of the same verse by the American Yiddish poet H. Leyvik.

"Dos turemdike lebn in der turemdike shtot", translated "The towering life of the towering city" (Yiddish turem, "tower," of German origin) became in another version "The imprisoned life of the prison city" (via turme, "prison", from Russian).

I discovered this old "plot" in a recent lecture, a volume on American Yiddish Poetry, by Benjamin and Barbara Harshav. One of those gentle epiphanies that only apparently obscure footnotes or references could reveal.

In a frivolous gesture, I concocted an improbable rendition based on both translations, a slice of contemporary universal metropolitan spleen:

The imprisoned life of the towering city. ~ Harshav
Spleen quotes by Harshav
I stood with my hands on the horses' necks, feeling the electricity of their thinking, the blood moving throughout their veins, and the history held neatly within the fabric of every organ of their equine anatomy, as if the body were a storage unit of memory. As I absorbed every nuance of the four-legged creatures, I touched my own stomach, lower back, liver, and spleen to see what the energies felt like. I compared one horse to another, then to myself, fascinated by the way each was so unique yet so the same. ~ Bethanne Elion
Spleen quotes by Bethanne Elion
We should not imagine that this means our fate is fixed by our planets, however. Even though each vital organ corresponds to a planet - the liver to Jupiter, the brain to the moon, the heart to the sun, the spleen to Saturn, the lungs to Mercury, the gallbladder to Mars, and the kidneys to Venus - yet the one is not governed by the other: "Saturn has nothing to do with the spleen, nor the spleen anything to do with Saturn." Rather, these correspondences are simply a manifestation of the cosmic mirror that makes man a microcosm of the universal macrocosm. The two are analogs but are not causally related. From a scale model of a building you can read the proportions and relationships of the building itself, but crushing the former does not raze the latter. ~ Philip Ball
Spleen quotes by Philip Ball
Who's in or out, who moves the grand machine, Nor stirs my curiosity, or spleen; Secrets of state no more I wish to know Than secret movements of a puppet-show; Let but the puppets move, I've my desire, Unseen the hand which guides the master wire. ~ Winston Churchill
Spleen quotes by Winston Churchill
Adieu to disappointment and spleen. What are men to rocks and mountains? ~ Jane Austen
Spleen quotes by Jane Austen
My character, Rick Spleen, is a what-if version of me, really, where nothing did quite turn out right and everything else is still around the corner. ~ Jack Dee
Spleen quotes by Jack Dee
You're right, a spleen is a strange thing-we technically don't need one, but maybe spleens are kept in our bodies in case we mutate or evolve, and if we grow wings or tentacles we need to have the spleen in place in order for them to work. ~ Douglas Coupland
Spleen quotes by Douglas Coupland
Do I believe in God? I did until Mother's accident. She fell on some meat loaf and it penetrated her spleen. ~ Woody Allen
Spleen quotes by Woody Allen
Something's nibbling my spleen! ~ Steven Erikson
Spleen quotes by Steven Erikson
( ... ) my preoccupation in a larger sense is the optimum man. The question of establishing an internal ecology, where the optimum liver works with the optimum spleen and the optimum eyeball and so forth. Now, when you get to the mind - not the brain, but the optimum mind - then you have the whole inner space idea; my conviction is that there's more room there than there is in outer space, in each individual human being. Love of course has a great deal to do with that, as a necessary coloration and adjunct to everything that we do - to love oneself, to love the parts of oneself, to love the interaction of the parts of oneself, and then the interaction of that whole organism with those of another person. Which is as good a definition of love as you can get, I think. ~ Theodore Sturgeon
Spleen quotes by Theodore Sturgeon
Although much that was precious has been taken from me in this life, I have reason to remain an optimist. After the numerous tight scrapes I've been through, by now I should have lost one leg, three fingers, one buttock, most of my teeth, an ear, my spleen, and my sense of fun. But here I am. ~ Dean Koontz
Spleen quotes by Dean Koontz
Was war, then, the big solution after all? Were those crude early theorists right? War the great aphrodisiac, the great source of world adrenaline, the solvent of ennui, Angst, melancholia, accidia, spleen? War itself a massive sexual act, culminating in a detumescence which was not mere metaphorical dying? War, finally, the controller, the trimmer and excisor, the justifier of fertility? ~ Anthony Burgess
Spleen quotes by Anthony Burgess
Call me that again," she growled. "And I'll gut you, rip out your spine through your nose, yank your spleen out of your asshole and feed it to you," she hissed. "Got it? ~ Alina Meuangkhot
Spleen quotes by Alina Meuangkhot
You should never be in a hurry if you can help it. It's bad for everything. Bad for the stomach, the spleen, the skin. Especially bad for the joints. The knees and ankles. Rushing isn't healthy at all. ~ Catherine Lacey
Spleen quotes by Catherine Lacey
I am, I guess, depressed. I guess I've been depressed for about twenty-four years. I can feel a better version of me somewhere in there - hidden behind a liver or attached to a bit of spleen within my stunted, childish body - a Libby that's telling me to get up, do something, grow up, move on. But the meanness usually wins out. (2) ~ Gillian Flynn
Spleen quotes by Gillian Flynn
My mother died at eighty-three, of cancer, in pain, her spleen enlarged so that her body was misshapen. Is that the person I see when I think of her? Sometimes. I wish it were not. It is a true image, yet it blurs, it clouds, a truer image. It is one memory among fifty years of memories of my mother. It is the last in time. Beneath it, behind it is a deeper, complex, ever-changing image, made from imagination, hearsay, photographs, memories. I see a little red-haired child in the mountains of Colorado, a sad-faced, delicate college girl, a kind, smiling young mother, a brilliantly intellectual woman, a peerless flirt, a serious artist, a splendid cook - I see her rocking, weeding, writing, laughing - I see the turquoise bracelets on her delicate, freckled arm - I see, for a moment, all that at once, I glimpse what no mirror can reflect, the spirit flashing out across the years, beautiful.

That must be what the great artists see and paint. That must be why the tired, aged faces in Rembrandt's portraits give us such delight: they show us beauty not skin-deep but life-deep. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Spleen quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
My master likewise mentioned another Quality which his Servants had discovered in several Yahoos, and to him was wholly unaccountable. He said, a Fancy would sometimes take a Yahoo, to retire into a Corner, to lie down and howl, and groan, and spurn away all that came near him, although he were young and fat, wanted neither Food nor Water; nor did the Servants imagine what could possibly ail him. And the only Remedy they found was to set him to hard Work, after which he would infallibly come to himself. To this I was silent out of Partiality to my own Kind; yet here I could plainly discover the true Seeds of Spleen, which only seizeth on the Lazy, the Luxurious, and the Rich; who, if they were forced to undergo the same Regimen I would undertake for the Cure. ~ Jonathan Swift
Spleen quotes by Jonathan Swift
Glenn! Most people want to die when they get the stomach flu. You threw up everything but your spleen and you just kept going." My eyes well up and my breathing gets shallow. "For Danny." "Nah. For you! You're a tough motherfucker, Glenn. ~ Glenn Rockowitz
Spleen quotes by Glenn Rockowitz
Spoken like a true gardener," Rakeed observed, popping a date ring into his mouth. "Usara's official stance is, of course, spleen." "Spleen?" Penir asked with a frown. "Spleen. Too much or too little. That's always a physician's answer." "That doesn't make any sense. ~ Fiona Patton
Spleen quotes by Fiona Patton
Good-humor, gay spirits, are the liberators, the sure cure for spleen and melancholy. Deeper than tears, these irradiate the tophets with their glad heavens. Go laugh, vent the pits, transmuting imps into angels by the alchemy of smiles. The satans flee at the sight of these redeemers. ~ Amos Bronson Alcott
Spleen quotes by Amos Bronson Alcott
Odd that the brain could function on its own, without acquainting him with its purposes, its reasons. But the brain was an organ, like the spleen, heart, kidneys. And they went about their private activities. So why not the brain? ~ Philip K. Dick
Spleen quotes by Philip K. Dick
Ultimately the judge threw Moore's suit out of court, saying he had no case. Ironically, in his decision, the judge cited the HeLa cell line as a precedent for what happened with the Mo cell line. The fact that no one had sued over the growth or ownership of the HeLa cell line, he said, illustrated that patients didn't mind when doctors took their cells and turned them into commercial products. The judge believed Moore was unusual in his objections. But in fact, he was simply the first to realize there was something potentially objectionable going on. ~ Rebecca Skloot
Spleen quotes by Rebecca Skloot
And if I were to open you up - would you see anything less remarkable? Less intricately dazzling, in its squelching, spongy way? Lungs and heart and spleen, and all the rest - ticking away, as it were? Yet you walk down the boulevard, and pass any number of such wonderful devices, all ticking away as they walk, and think it no great marvel. ~ K.W. Jeter
Spleen quotes by K.W. Jeter
Hi Haley. look, I found all these free swords. They were in my spleen. ~ Rich Burlew
Spleen quotes by Rich Burlew
You don't know what love is, I thought, wanting to smack him. Love was the steady burn of acid indigestion. Love was a punch in the gut that ruptured your spleen. Love was a broken telephone that refused to dial out. ~ Kristen Arnett
Spleen quotes by Kristen Arnett
There is a luxury in self-dispraise; And inward self-disparagement affords To meditative spleen a grateful feast. ~ William Wordsworth
Spleen quotes by William Wordsworth
Above all things physical, it is more important to be beautiful on the inside - to have a big hear and an open mind and a spectacular spleen. ~ Ellen DeGeneres
Spleen quotes by Ellen DeGeneres
GOODY. MY SPLEEN IS COLLAPSING. HURRY UP. ~ James S.A. Corey
Spleen quotes by James S.A. Corey
Then if thou hast
A heart of wreak in thee, that wilt revenge
Thine own particular wrongs and stop those maims
Of shame seen through thy country, speed
thee straight,
And make my misery serve thy turn: so use it
That my revengeful services may prove
As benefits to thee, for I will fight
Against my canker'd country with the spleen
Of all the under fiends. ~ William Shakespeare
Spleen quotes by William Shakespeare
Or if there were a sympathy in choice, War, death, or sickness did lay siege to it, Making it momentary as a sound Swift as a shadow, short as any dream Brief as the lightening in the collied night, That, in a spleen, unfolds both heaven and earth; And ere a man hath power to say "Behold!" The jaws of darkness do devour it up: So quick bright things come to confusion.'" "Brava! ~ Jean Hegland
Spleen quotes by Jean Hegland
Social media has created a legion of social delinquents, billions of people speaking not their minds but their spleens, venting everything from the gum-cracking snark befitting a hair-twisting mallrat to the froth-flecked rage of a bell tower marksman. ~ Steven Weber
Spleen quotes by Steven Weber
Had Prozac been available last century, Baudelaire's "spleen," Edgar Allan Poe's moods, the poetry of Sylvia Plath, the lamentations of so many other poets, everything with a soul would have been silenced*....
If large pharmaceutical companies were able to eliminate the seasons, they would probably do so--for profit, of course.

*This does not mean that Sylvia Plath should not have been medicated at all. The point is that pathologies should be medicated when there is risk of suicide, not mood swings. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Spleen quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Spleen can subsist on any kind of food. ~ William Hazlitt
Spleen quotes by William Hazlitt
Oh, jeez. Is that a spleen?" "I think that's a spleen, yes. ~ Mira Grant
Spleen quotes by Mira Grant
I wanted to rupture his spleen. ~ Tahereh Mafi
Spleen quotes by Tahereh Mafi
The fact that alienated people can be counted on to vent their spleen in ineffectual directions - by fighting among themselves - relieves the government of the need to deal fundamentally with the conditions which cause their frustrations, ~ Chris Hedges
Spleen quotes by Chris Hedges
True love, the type that strikes you down and makes you change forever, you feel that kind of love in every f*****g organ inside you. Liver, kidneys, heart, and spleen. Every tiny cell what makes up your brain and your spine, your bones and blood and muscles. It keens through you. ~ Nicola Monaghan
Spleen quotes by Nicola Monaghan
Many honours I want not, nor great treasures: they excite the spleen. But it is bad sleeping without a good name and a little treasure. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Spleen quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
There are come Critics so with Spleen diseased, They scarcely come inclining to be pleased: And sure he must have more than mortal Skill, Who please one against his Will. ~ William Congreve
Spleen quotes by William Congreve
In the secret places of her thymus gland Louise is making too much of herself. Her faithful biology depends on regulation but the white T-cells have turned bandit. They don't obey the rules. They are swarming into the bloodstream, overturning the quiet order of spleen and intestine. In the lymph nodes they are swelling with pride. It used to be their job to keep her body safe from enemies on the outside. They were her immunity, her certainty against infection. Now they are the enemies on the inside. The security forces have rebelled. Louise is the victim of a coup.

Will you let me crawl inside you, stand guard over you, trap them as they come at you? Why can't I dam their blind tide that filthies your blood? Why are there no lock gates on the portal vein? The inside of your body is innocent, nothing has taught it fear. Your artery canals trust their cargo, they don't check the shipments in the blood. You are full to overflowing but the keeper is asleep and there's murder going on inside. Who comes here? Let me hold up my lantern. It's only the blood; red cells carrying oxygen to the heart, thrombocytes making sure of proper clotting. The white cells, B and T types, just a few of them as always whistling as they go.

The faithful body has made a mistake. This is no time to stamp the passports and look at the sky. Coming up behind are hundreds of them. Hundreds too many, armed to the teeth for a job that doesn't need doing. Not needed? With all that weaponr ~ Jeanette Winterson
Spleen quotes by Jeanette Winterson
The slaves of power mind the cause they have to serve, because their own interest is concerned; but the friends of liberty always sacrifice their cause, which is only the cause of humanity, to their own spleen, vanity, and self-opinion. ~ William Hazlitt
Spleen quotes by William Hazlitt
perhaps, all these years, historians had been unwilling to recognize history as a spiral because a spiral was so difficult to describe. was war, then, the big solution after all? war the great aphrodisiac, the great source of world adrenalin, the solvent of ennui, angst, melancholia, accidia, spleen? war itself a massive sexual act. -war, finally, the controller, the trimmer & excisor; the justifier of fertility?" --the Wanting Seed/Burgess ~ Tony Burgess
Spleen quotes by Tony Burgess
After hearing much from his patients about alleged faith-healing, a Minnesota physician named William Nolen spent a year and a half trying to track down the most striking cases. Was there clear medical evidence that the disease was really present before the 'cure'? If so, had the disease actually disappeared after the cure, or did we just have the healer's or the patient's say-so? He uncovered many cases of fraud, including the first exposure in America of 'psychic surgery'. But he found not one instance of cure of any serious organic (non-psychogenic) disease. There were no cases where gallstones or rheumatoid arthritis, say, were cured, much less cancer or cardiovascular disease. When a child's spleen is ruptured, Nolen noted, perform a simple surgical operation and the child is completely better. But take that child to a faith-healer and she's dead in a day. ~ Carl Sagan
Spleen quotes by Carl Sagan
I'm now convinced that I'm a doctor. I mean, if someone says they have a pain, I'm like, 'Well, that's your spleen.' ~ Olivia Wilde
Spleen quotes by Olivia Wilde
If Prague and the rest of Bohemia, with all their charming hospodas delightful architecture and pretty landscape should become too cosy for you, Ostrava, the Czech Republic's third largest city with about 330,000 inhabitants, will rapidly cure your spleen. Tucked away in the country's northeastern corner on the border between Moravia, Silesia and Poland, the former Czechoslovakia's "heart of steel" offers the true flair of the Wild East. As an Australian probably would have put it, this is a city where men are men, and sheep are nervous. ~ Terje B. Englund
Spleen quotes by Terje B. Englund
Sunday: this satisfied procession
Of definite Sunday faces;
Bonnets, silk hats, and conscious graces
In repetition that displaces
Your mental self-possession
By this unwarranted digression.
Evening, lights, and tea!
Children and cats in the alley;
Dejection unable to rally
Against this dull conspiracy.
And Life, a little bald and gray,
Languid, fastidious, and bland,
Waits, hat and gloves in hand,
Punctilious of tie and suit
(Somewhat impatient of delay)
On the doorstep of the Absolute. ~ T. S. Eliot
Spleen quotes by T. S. Eliot
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off - then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. ~ Herman Melville
Spleen quotes by Herman Melville
You're wrong, you know," Susan said. "She doesn't belong here. I'm against the death penalty. I don't think the state should be in the business of killing people. I think it's wrong. And it's hypocritical. Mostly, I just think it's mean. Gretchen Lowell ? She is the exception. She deserves to die. If we kill one person, one criminal in the history of the world, it should be her." Susan paused, reconsidering. "And Hitler. Her, and Hitler". Prescott had that shrink look on his face again, passive and unimpressed, and yet somehow judgmental at the same time. Susan continued. "She removed a detective's spleen without anesthesia. She stuck a wire through an old woman's eyeball and then threaded it behind her nose and out through the other eye socket and then she stuck the wire into an outlet."
Prescott raised an eyebrow. "And you're arguing that she's sane? ~ Chelsea Cain
Spleen quotes by Chelsea Cain
The dense Yin Organs of the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, and Kidney store the essential and potential energy derived from substances; the hollow Yang Organs of the Gallbladder, Small Intestine, Stomach, Large Intestine, and Bladder process the substances of the external environment. ~ Harriet Beinfield
Spleen quotes by Harriet Beinfield
It raises my spleen more than any thing, to have the pretence of being asked, of being given a choice, and at the same time addressed in such a way as to oblige one to do the very thing - whatever it be! ~ Jane Austen
Spleen quotes by Jane Austen
Kind pity chokes my spleen. ~ John Donne
Spleen quotes by John Donne
Are there moments when I see unrequited crushes or ex-boyfriends slow dancing with their dates and kind of want to stab myself in the spleen with a salad fork? Yeah, sure. ~ Sloane Crosley
Spleen quotes by Sloane Crosley
I wouldn't have minded living in Provence for a month or however long it took for me to learn to say, 'I've been attacked by a wild boar. Help me find my spleen! ~ Michael J. Fox
Spleen quotes by Michael J. Fox
Must I observe you? Must I stand
& crouch
Under your testy humour?
By the gods,
You shall digest the venom of
your spleen,
Though it do split you, for, from this
day forth, I'll use you for my mirth, yea,
for my laughter, when you are waspish. ~ William Shakespeare
Spleen quotes by William Shakespeare
One lone butterfly flapped his wings somewhere in the vicinity of my spleen. He was probably a scout. No doubt six million other butterflies were hot on his heels, if butterflies even have heels. ~ John Inman
