What is slang in one age sometimes goes into the vocabulary of the purist in the next. ~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Slang quotes by Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Such is life, my fellow-mummers-just like a poor player that bluffs and feints his hour upon the stage, and then cheapens down to mere nonentity. But let me not hear any small witticism to the further effect that its story is a tale told by a vulgarian, full of slang and blanky, signifying-nothing. ~ Joseph Furphy
Slang quotes by Joseph Furphy
Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.
(Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.) ~ Douglas Adams
Slang quotes by Douglas Adams
1SA17.49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 1SA17.50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ~ Anonymous
Slang quotes by Anonymous
Character is beyond obligation. You could kick your shoes off at the door, flick your cigarete butts onto the sidewalk or talk only in slang, those things are forgivable if you have character ~ Novala Takemoto
Slang quotes by Novala Takemoto
In general, American slang is much better than English slang. The entire world picks up American slang. ~ Jesse Sheidlower
Slang quotes by Jesse Sheidlower
My parents were hippies, and the story is that they went through a dictionary looking for a beautiful word to name me. They nearly called me Banyan, but flipped a few pages on and reached "China," thankfully. The other reason they liked it is that "china" is Cockney rhyming slang for "mate." People say "my old china," meaning "my old mate," because "china plate" rhymes with "mate. ~ China Mieville
Slang quotes by China Mieville
This is the switching point, Caspian,' she whispered in his shirt. 'This is me, switching tracks.' 'I guess that's one thing to call it. A new one on me. We could start a new slang. Let's go back to my place and switch tracks. ~ Beatriz Williams
Slang quotes by Beatriz Williams
Fuck You Poem #45

Fuck you in slang and conventional English.
Fuck you in lost and neglected lingoes.
Fuck you hungry and sated; faded, pock marked, and defaced.
Fuck you with orange rind, fennel and anchovy paste.
Fuck you with rosemary and thyme, and fried green olives on the side.
Fuck you humidly and icily.
Fuck you farsightedly and blindly.
Fuck you nude and draped in stolen finery.

Fuck you while cells divide wildly and birds trill.
Thank you for barring me from his bedside while he was ill.
Fuck you puce and chartreuse.
Fuck you postmodern and prehistoric.
Fuck you under the influence of opiun, codeine, laudanum, and paregoric.
Fuck every real and imagined country you fancied yourself princess of.
Fuck you on feast days and fast days, below and above.
Fuck you sleepless and shaking for nineteen nights running.
Fuck you ugly and fuck you stunning.

Fuck you shipwrecked on the barren island of your bed.
Fuck you marching in lockstep in the ranks of the dead.
Fuck you at low and high tide.
And fuck you astride
anyone who has the bad luck to fuck you, in dank hallways,
bathrooms, or kitchens.
Fuck you in gasps and whispered benedictions.

And fuck these curses, however heartfelt and true,
that bind me, till I forgive you, to you. ~ Amy Gerstler
Slang quotes by Amy Gerstler
I know only two words of American slang, 'swell' and 'lousy'. I think 'swell' is lousy, but 'lousy' is swell. ~ J.B. Priestley
Slang quotes by J.B. Priestley
Keep my planets in orbit,
Never forfeit or quit,
Move forward ...
I talk with the awkward slang,
I walk with the Wu-Tang. ~ RZA
Slang quotes by RZA
A few words which he wanted to emphasize were put into brackets or set off by quotation marks. My first impulse was to point out to him that it was ridiculous to put slang words and expressions between quotation marks, for that prevents them from entering the language. But I decided not to. When I received his letters, his parentheses made me shudder. At first, it was a shudder of slight shame, disagreeable. Later (and now, when I reread them) the shudder was the same, but I know, by some indefinable, imperceptible change, that it is a shudder of love- it is both poignant and delightful, perhaps because of the memory of the word shame that accompanied it in the beginning. Those parentheses and quotation marks are the flaw on the hip, the beauty mark on the thigh whereby my friend showed that he was himself, irreplaceable, and that he was wounded. ~ Jean Genet
Slang quotes by Jean Genet
Both my parents had a great influence on me. I never heard my father use a profane or even a slang word. I always respected him because of his complete integrity. In his business dealings his handshake was like a contract. He was as good as his word. Of all the people I have ever known, my mother had the greatest influence on me. ~ Billy Graham
Slang quotes by Billy Graham
Writing a tribe is fun. They have their own language, their own slang; they repeat it, and it becomes part of the texture of the play. For a writer, that's thrilling. That's when my pen flies. ~ Laura Wade
Slang quotes by Laura Wade
The American has no language, he has a dialect, slang, provincialism, accent and so forth ~ Rudyard Kipling
Slang quotes by Rudyard Kipling
Another reason we know that language could not determine thought is that when a language isn't up to the conceptual demands of its speakers, they don't scratch their heads dumbfounded (at least not for long); they simply change the language. They stretch it with metaphors and metonyms, borrow words and phrases from other languages, or coin new slang and jargon. (When you think about it, how else could it be? If people had trouble thinking without language, where would their language have come from-a committee of Martians?) Unstoppable change is the great given in linguistics, which is not why linguists roll their eyes at common claims such as that German is the optimal language of science, that only French allows for truly logical expression, and that indigenous languages are not appropriate for the modern world. As Ray Harlow put it, it's like saying, Computers were not discussed in Old English; therefore computers cannot be discussed in Modern English. ~ Steven Pinker
Slang quotes by Steven Pinker
The one stream of poetry which is continually flowing is slang. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton
Slang quotes by Gilbert K. Chesterton
I like slang words, straight to the point.
I like words of wisdom, straight to the heart. ~ Toba Beta
Slang quotes by Toba Beta
Scripture is the thing I like to share with people more than anything. My prayer reality is quite kooky. I have this very unique dialogue with the Lord. I utilize my own sort of street vocabulary - nothing slang that would be unacceptable. ~ Stephen Baldwin
Slang quotes by Stephen Baldwin
Hairstyles change, and skirt lengths, and slang, but high school administrations? Never. ~ Stephen King
Slang quotes by Stephen King
In our own time, academic history has grown unbelievably diverse,
even to the point of ridicule by conservatives, who may not appreciate that
it is a sign of a culture's strength, and not its weakness, that it can devote
resources to the study of early American midwives, or transgender people
in the nineteenth century, or the emergence of new forms of urban slang.
In part, these new types of history are just good, if sophisticated, fun. It
can be fascinating and deeply rewarding to read about other human beings
who have had lives radically different from (or similar to) one's own. But
these new histories also tell stories that have long gone untold, and perhaps
not for any good reason. Perhaps these histories may rouse political
theory from its slumbers, and show it that there are more things in heaven
and earth than are dreamt of in its philosophy. ~ Jason Kuznicki
Slang quotes by Jason Kuznicki
My language limitations here are real. My vocabulary is adequate for writing notes and keeping journals but absolutely useless for an active moral life. If I really knew this language, there would surely be in my head, as there is in Webster's or the Dictionary of American Slang, that unreducible verb designed to tell a person like me what to do next. ~ Grace Paley
Slang quotes by Grace Paley
Sin does not always drive us to drink; more often it drives us to exhaustion. Tiredness is equally as debilitating as drunkenness. Burnout is slang for an inner tiredness, a fatigue of our souls. Jesus came to forgive us all of our sins, including the sin of busyness. The problem with growth in the modern church is not the slowness of growth but the rushing of growth. ~ Mike Yaconelli
Slang quotes by Mike Yaconelli
The British have slang words, as we do, but it was fun. ~ Dennis Farina
Slang quotes by Dennis Farina
When you depart from standard usage, it should be deliberate and not an accidental lapse. Like a poet who breaks the rules of poetry for creative effect, this only works when you know and respect the rule you are breaking. If you have never heard of the rules you are breaking, you have no right to do so, and you are likely to come off like a buffoon or a barbarian. Breaking rules, using slang and archaic language can be effective, but it is just as likely to give you an audience busy with wincing. ~ N.D. Wilson
Slang quotes by N.D. Wilson
Old soldiers sometimes say, "There are no atheists in foxholes." (A foxhole, in military slang, is a shallow pit in a dangerous place on the battlefield.) ~ N. T. Wright
Slang quotes by N. T. Wright
If the plural for marble, marbles, is slang for sanity, then what does it mean to get lost in a room of marble statues? ~ Bridgette Bates
Slang quotes by Bridgette Bates
The guy said industry slang for flight attendant was Space Waitress. Or Air Mattress. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Slang quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
Did your brother make it?" Uriah says.
"Yeah." Finally I see Tobias, his hand gripping Caleb's arm, coming toward us.
"Not sure why an Erudite like you can't get it through his head," Tobias is saying, "but you aren't going to be able to outrun me."
"He's right," says Uriah. "Four's fast. Not as fast as me, but definitely faster than a Nose like you."
Christina laughs. "A what?"
"Nose." Uriah touches the side of his nose. "It's a play on words. 'Knows' with a 'K,' knowledge, Erudite…get it? It's like Stiff."
"The Dauntless have the weirdest slang. Pansycake, Nose…is there a term for the Candor?"
"Of course." Uriah grins. "Jerks."
Christina shoves Uriah, hard, making him drop the flashlight. Tobias, laughing, leads us to the rest of the group, standing a few feet away. ~ Veronica Roth
Slang quotes by Veronica Roth
Slang, too, is the wholesome fermentation or eructation of those processes eternally active in language, by which froth and specks are thrown up, mostly to pass away; though occasionally to settle and permanently chrystallize. ~ Walt Whitman
Slang quotes by Walt Whitman
Are you aware that Jesus Christ can spell? I get so tired of you spelling every slang and cuss word that crosses your mind, as though you are pulling one over on the Lord. ~ Brenda Sutton Rose
Slang quotes by Brenda Sutton Rose
I meant of course the whole portentous scrimmage of sex itself, the act of penetration which could lead a man to despair for the sake of a creature with two breasts and le croissant as the picturesque Levant slang has it. ~ Lawrence Durrell
Slang quotes by Lawrence Durrell
<3. You think that looks like a heart? If you do, that's only because you've never seen scrotum. ~ David Levithan
Slang quotes by David Levithan
Now holler at me if you're ready to have a Rossumly awesome time. State District Forty is about to get hella canvassed, and I am so here for it." He pounds a fist in the air.

It's like watching your oldest, cringiest teacher try to win over the class with slang they googled during their planning period. And I'm pretty sure Gabe being only twenty-three makes it worse. ~ Becky Albertalli
Slang quotes by Becky Albertalli
MTV will lead us to believe that the B word has become a term of endearment or slang among equals, but I still mainly think of it as the insult of choice for the inarticulate. ~ Ally Carter
Slang quotes by Ally Carter
In the rock 'n roll slang world, they're called rock doctors, or rock docs. They would come out to shows and like to hang backstage. You could get a prescription for anything you want from them. They just want to hang out and party. It's crazy because you can get a prescription to anything. It doesn't even matter what kind of doctor they are. ~ Reginald Arvizu
Slang quotes by Reginald Arvizu
The Dauthless have the wierdest slang. Pansycake, Nose ... is there a term for The Candor?"
"Of course."Uriah grins."Jerks ~ Veronica Roth
Slang quotes by Veronica Roth
The torture of animals, especially cats, was a popular amusement throughout early modern Europe. The power of cats was concentrated on the most intimate aspect of domestic life: sex. Le chat, la chatte, le minet mean the same thing in French slang as 'pussy' does in English, and they have served as obscenities for centuries. ~ Slavoj Zizek
Slang quotes by Slavoj Zizek
I like to add props to render the specificities of place - paintings, food, clothing, signs, infrastructure, music, sayings and slang particular to the region and particular to the character. And props shouldn't just sit there; they should get used. ~ Kaui Hart Hemmings
Slang quotes by Kaui Hart Hemmings
On the whole I try to keep Modesty and Willie in timeless settings, which is why I avoid all the latest slang and in-words. It won't be long before 'brill' sounds as dated as 'super' does now. [Uncle Happy, 1990] ~ Peter O'Donnell
Slang quotes by Peter O'Donnell
Ah, the boo. The boo is the most maligned, gossiped about, ridiculed figure in the pantheon of prison characters. Boo, which is short for the street term "booty call," is the casual girlfriend, the cheap feel in the sally port, the temporary object of someone's affections (although most boos don't realize the impermanence of their positions). ~ Erin George
Slang quotes by Erin George
Shakespearean words, foreign words, slang and dialect and made-up phrases from kids on the street corner: English has room for them all. And writers - not just literary writers, but popular writers as well - breathe air into English and keep it lively by making it their own, not by adhering to some style manual that gets handed out to college Freshmen in a composition class. ~ Donna Tartt
Slang quotes by Donna Tartt
Oh, he was a decent-enough high school student, good grades and well-liked, but his test scores were nothing to write home about. He might as well have Christmas-treed the math test. ~ Thomas Christopher Greene
Slang quotes by Thomas Christopher Greene
Down through the years certain fads of slang had come and gone, and their vestiges could be found in Janie's and Mabel's conversation, like mastodon bones in a swamp. ~ Dolores Hitchens
Slang quotes by Dolores Hitchens
Usually the German translators do something terrible, especially with Tom Wolfe, which is that they make it local. So if the characters are from Harlem, the translators put all this Berlin slang into their mouths, and that's just terrible. You cringe when you read that. But there really is no good solution to the problem, except learning English. ~ Daniel Kehlmann
Slang quotes by Daniel Kehlmann
Hobos' (a slang term that combines the words 'hope' and 'bowl of beans given to me for free by a woman who then initiated intercourse') ~ Patton Oswalt
Slang quotes by Patton Oswalt
Adam was charming and spoke perfect French. Like many anglophones in Montréal, he actually spoke French better than we did. They knew exactly which verbs to use in the same way that people knew which utensils to use while eating at a fancy dinner. It was very proper because they learned it from books. They didn't know slang or how to curse. They didn't know how to do anything other than be proper and reserved. It was state-sponsored, dry-clean-only French. ~ Heather O'Neill
Slang quotes by Heather O'Neill
So, the thing we're all not talking about," he says. He gestures to me. "You almost died, a sadistic pansycake saved you, and now we're all waging some serious war with the factionless as allies."
"Pansycake?" says Christina.
"Dauntless slang." Lynn smirks. "Supposed to be a huge insult, only no one uses it anymore."
"Because it's so offensive," says Uriah, nodding.
"No. Because it's so stupid no Dauntless with any sense would speak it, let alone think it. Pansycake. What are you, twelve?"
"And a half," he says. ~ Veronica Roth
Slang quotes by Veronica Roth
It's like making a sandwich. I start with the bread and the meat. That's the architecture. Add some cheese, lettuce and tomato. That's character development and polishing. Then, the fun part. All the little historical details and the slang and the humor is the mayonnaise. I go back and slather that shit everywhere. The mayo is the best part. I'm a bit messy with the mayo. ~ Laini Giles
Slang quotes by Laini Giles
I was extremely shy of approaching my hero but he, as I found out, was sorely in need of company. By then almost completely blind, he was claustrated and even a little confused and this may help explain the rather shocking attitude that he took to the blunt trauma that was being inflicted in the streets and squares around him. 'This was my country and it might be yet,' he intoned to me when the topic first came up, as it had to: 'But something came between it and the sun.' This couplet he claimed (I have never been able to locate it) was from Edmund Blunden, whose gnarled hand I had been so excited to shake all those years ago, but it was not the Videla junta that Borges meant by the allusion. It was the pre-existing rule of Juan Perón, which he felt had depraved and corrupted Argentine society. I didn't disagree with this at all - and Perón had victimized Borges's mother and sister as well as having Borges himself fired from his job at the National Library - but it was nonetheless sad to hear the old man saying that he heartily preferred the new uniformed regime, as being one of 'gentlemen' as opposed to 'pimps.' This was a touch like listening to Evelyn Waugh at his most liverish and bufferish. (It was also partly redeemed by a piece of learned philology or etymology concerning the Buenos Aires dockside slang for pimp: canfinflero. 'A canfinfla, you see,' said Borges with perfect composure, 'is a pussy or more exactly a cunt. So a canfinflero is a trafficker in cunt: in Ang ~ Christopher Hitchens
Slang quotes by Christopher Hitchens
The word cod is of unknown origin. For something that began as food for good Catholics on the days they were to abstain from sex, it is not clear why, in several languages, the words for salt cod have come to have sexual connotations. In the English-speaking West Indies, saltfish is the common name for salt cod. In slang, saltfish means "a woman's genitals", and while Caribbeans do love their salt cod, it is this other meaning that is responsible for the frequent appearance of the word saltfish in Caribbean songs such as the Mighty Sparrow's "Saltfish". ~ Mark Kurlansky
Slang quotes by Mark Kurlansky
Giving it those ones' is Delhi School of Architecture slang for 'faking it big time'. ~ Anupama Chopra
Slang quotes by Anupama Chopra
Slang in a woman's mouth is not obscene, it only sounds so. ~ Mark Twain
Slang quotes by Mark Twain
I want a girl with extensions in her hair,
Bamboo earrings, at least two pair,
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude,
That's all I need to get me in a good mood.
She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang,
I love it when a woman ain't scared to do her thing. ~ LL Cool J
Slang quotes by LL Cool J
The Americans with Russian girlfriends--"pillow dictionaries," they called them, aware that these lanky, mysterious women were far better-looking than anyone they'd touched back home--began to sound like natives. They were peacocks, preening with slang...A little bravado goes a long way toward hiding the loneliness. You can reinvent yourself with a different alphabet. ~ Elliott Holt
Slang quotes by Elliott Holt
I'm a Marine, Josie AND I am Navajo, an Earth-walker. I am Samuel of the Bitter Water People." He grinned, his eyebrows wagging devilishly. He leaned into me and said slyly, "Therefore you can't outrun me - even when I'm wearing shitkickers." He used the Levan slang for cowboy boots, and it made me laugh despite myself ~ Amy Harmon
Slang quotes by Amy Harmon
They can bite, but cannot be us,
They can come and pick up little slang but cannot see us,
You ought to be ashamed trying to fit in my adidas,
So Run like DMC like you don't know you got no heater ~ Andre Benjamin
Slang quotes by Andre Benjamin
My mother wouldn't allow me to speak slang when I was growing up. But when I got outside, around my friends, it was 'Yo' and 'That's the joint' and 'Yo, what's up?' So I had my game for my friends and my game for my mom. ~ Queen Latifah
Slang quotes by Queen Latifah
If you use a colloquialism or a slang word or phrase, simply use it; do not draw attention to it by enclosing it in quotation marks. To do so is to put on airs, as though you were inviting the reader to join you in a select society of those who know better. ~ William Strunk Jr.
Slang quotes by William Strunk Jr.
That a language may retain its vitality and dignity, two things are necessary. In the first place, it must keep in close touch with life, and must respond to those constant alterations which look like corruptions but which are quite as often signs of growth. In the second place, it must submit to some kind of selective authority which creates a generally recognized but slowly changing norm of speech. Without the former condition a language will become rigid, conventional, and emotionless; without the second it will just as surely tend to become provincial and formless--even unintelligible, except locally and ephemerally. ~ Paul Elmer More
Slang quotes by Paul Elmer More
Correct English is the slang of prigs ... ~ George Eliot
Slang quotes by George Eliot
When you think about Puritanism, you must begin by getting rid of the slang term 'Puritanism' as applied to Victorian religious hypocrisy. This does not apply to seventeenth-century Puritanism. ~ Leland Ryken
Slang quotes by Leland Ryken
In China, when you get to the airport everyone be talking in American slang. ~ Ike Turner
Slang quotes by Ike Turner
Slang is the suitcase of the damned, my dear. CHECK IT. ~ Heather Cocks
Slang quotes by Heather Cocks
Then you must tell them that love isn't something like a grindstone that's the same thing everywhere and do the same thing to everything it touches. Love is like the sea. It is a moving thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from the shore it meets, and its different with every shore. (written properly and not in slang) ~ Zora Neale Hurston
Slang quotes by Zora Neale Hurston
I found cause to wonder upon what ground the English accuse Americans of corrupting the language by introducing slang words. I think I heard more and more different kinds of slang during my few weeks' stay in London than in my whole "tenderloin" life in New York. But I suppose the English feel that the language is theirs, and that they may do with it as they please without at the same time allowing that privilege to others. ~ James Weldon Johnson
Slang quotes by James Weldon Johnson
A wise man should not divulge the formula of a medicine which he has well prepared; an act of charity which he has performed; domestic conflicts; private affairs with his wife; poorly prepared food he may have been offered; or slang he may have heard. ~ Chanakya
Slang quotes by Chanakya
I've always been a word guy, I like weird words and I like American slang and all that and words that are no longer being used ... I like to drag them out of the box and wave them around ... this is an interesting one, it's amazing how in addition to punctuation just a little pause in the wrong place can just completely transform the meaning of something. ~ Tom Waits
Slang quotes by Tom Waits
Speaking slang only makes a man sound ignorant. If you can't think of more appropriate words to express yourself, then open a dictionary and study. ~ Kim Vogel Sawyer
Slang quotes by Kim Vogel Sawyer
Every dictionary contains a world. I open a book of thieves' slang from Queen Anne's reign and they have a hundred words for swords, for wenches, and for being hanged. They did no die, they danced on nothing. Then I peek into any one of my rural Victorian dictionaries, compiled by a lonely clergyman, with words for coppices, thickets, lanes, diseases of horses and innumerable terms for kinds of eel. They gave names to the things of their lives, and their lives are collected in these dictionaries – every detail and joke and belief. I have their worlds piled up on my desk. ~ Mark Forsyth
Slang quotes by Mark Forsyth
'Chamalkay' is an old Guyanese slang word. It means a 'young mischievous girl.' It's not derogatory, but it isn't over complimentary, either. It was probably a word I just Googled one day, and the song kind of played into the feel of that. ~ Dev Hynes
Slang quotes by Dev Hynes
It's funny when people say something is "unreal" about something that is, in reality, real. I'm so guilty of it, it's real! ~ Ethan Luck
Slang quotes by Ethan Luck
Tonight sucked" my dad said and I started to laugh hearing him say that. "What?" He smiled at me. "Isn't that the slang you kids are using? The lingo? Do I sound hip?"
I just shook my head. "The only hip I hear is the sound of yours breaking. ~ Robin Benway
Slang quotes by Robin Benway
The thinker who should turn aside from slang would resemble a surgeon who should avert his face from an ulcer or a wart. He would be like a philologist refusing to examine a fact in language, a philosopher hesitating to scrutinize a fact in humanity. ~ Victor Hugo
Slang quotes by Victor Hugo
I would rather have written Fables in Slang than be President. ~ William Allen White
Slang quotes by William Allen White
I'm really fascinated by lingos and colloquialisms that are outmoded and have gone by the wayside. I love the way people spoke in the '30s, and the amazing slang of the mid-'60s and '70s. ~ Beck
Slang quotes by Beck
Among others, yes. There were some Egyptian gods worshipped there too." Lourds grinned. "One of the most interesting pieces is the Stoivadeion, the temple dedicated to Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. It's a giant phallus." The two soldiers in the front of the boat totally lost it and started laughing hysterically. Even Fitrat laughed, and he wiped his eyes. "Who would do such a thing?" "It was erected - if I may be so bold - " The soldiers howled with glee. " - by an ancient Greek grammarian named Carystius. Sadly, this phallus is practically all that remains of his works. Even that is broken." "Broken?" The young soldier in the front seat turned around again. He had changed to speaking English. "Yes. In half." "So now it's half-cocked? Is that how you say this in your slang?" The soldier laughed and pounded his thigh with a fist. "Yes." Lourds covered his face with his hat and wanted to throw himself overboard. ~ Charles Brokaw
Slang quotes by Charles Brokaw
Shakespeare used the word 'flush' to indicate plenty of money. Well, just remember there was only one Shakespeare, and he was the only one that had a right to use that word in that sense . You'll never be a Shakespeare, there will never be such another - Nature exhausted herself in producing him. ~ Joseph Devlin
Slang quotes by Joseph Devlin
Try and write straight English; never using slang except in dialogue and then only when unavoidable. Because all slang goes sour in a short time. I only use swear words, for example, that have lasted at least a thousand years for fear of getting stuff that will be simply timely and then go sour. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Slang quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
Slang is vigorous and apt. Probably most of our vital words were once slang. ~ John Galsworthy
Slang quotes by John Galsworthy
Well, killing da already scientifically dead is not murder.
We hav a slang term por it...
Dobol dead. ~ Geonard Yleana
Slang quotes by Geonard Yleana
Rick and Scotty, who had heard Australian slang before from Digger Sears, one-time mate of the Tarpon, broke into chuckles.

"I'd better translate," Scotty said, "'Lord stone the crows' is just an expression. Oscar Ashe is hard cash. Yakka is hard work. And dinkum oil is gospel truth. ~ John Blaine
Slang quotes by John Blaine
people with autism must survive in an outside world where "special needs" is playground slang for "retarded, ~ Naoki Higashida
Slang quotes by Naoki Higashida
Slang is a foul pool at which every dunce fills his bucket, and then sets up as a fountain. ~ Ambrose Bierce
Slang quotes by Ambrose Bierce
Adapt your style, if you wish, to admit the color of slang or freshness of neologism, but hang tough on clarity, precision, structure, grace. ~ William Safire
Slang quotes by William Safire
Attention to the meaning of the central male slang term for sexual intercourse - "fuck" - is instructive. To fuck a woman is to have sex with her. To fuck someone in another context… means to hurt or cheat a person. And when hurled as a simple insult ("fuck you") the intent is denigration and the remark is often a prelude to violence or the threat of violence. Sex in patriarchy is fucking. That we live in a world in which people continue to use the same word for sex and violence, and then resist the notion that sex is routinely violent and claim to be outraged when sex becomes overtly violent, is testament to the power of patriarchy. ~ Bell Hooks
Slang quotes by Bell Hooks
My music is just fresh. Everybody say it's a breath of fresh air because it's not like the normal Houston sound you would hear. I am from Houston and I use that same slang and I carry myself the same way as a Houstonian and I'm a Houston dude born and raised, but the music is a lil bit different due to the things I've seen and the things I've learned and put that into my music. ~ Short Dawg
Slang quotes by Short Dawg
Shocked, Raven flung back her head to listen more intently. "The wolves are talking to you! How do I know that, Mikhail? How could I possibly know such a thing?"
He ruffled her hair lightly, affectionately. "You hang out with the wrong crowd."
He was rewarded with a bubble of laughter. It tugged at his heart, left him open and vulnerable.
"What is this?" she teased. "Lord of the manor picks up seventies slang?"
He grinned at her boyishly, mischievously. "Maybe I am the one hanging out with the wrong crowd."
"And maybe there's hope for you yet." She kissed his throat, his chin, the stubborn line of his blue-shadowed jaw. ~ Christine Feehan
Slang quotes by Christine Feehan
Donna: You really believe in all that stuff, don't you?
Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins): It's all over the place these days. If I wait here long enough ...
Donna: I don't suppose you've seen a little blue box.
Wilfred: Is that slang for something?
Donna: I mean it. If you ever see a little blue box, flying up there in the sky, you shout for me, Gramps. Oh you just shout.
Wilfred: You know, I don't understand half the things you say these days.
Donna: Nor me.
Wilfred: Fair do's. You've had a funny old time of it lately
-Doctor Who ~ Russell T. Davies
Slang quotes by Russell T. Davies
I shared my office on 57th Street with Dr Jacob Ecstein, young (thirty-three), dynamic (two books published), intelligent (he and I usually agreed), personable (everyone liked him), unattractive (no one loved him), anal (he plays the stock market compulsively), oral (he smokes heavily), non-genital (doesn't seem to notice women), and Jewish (he knows two Yiddish slang words). Our mutual secretary was a Miss Reingold. Mary Jane Reingold, old (thirty-six), undynamic (she worked for us), unintelligent (she prefers Ecstein to me), personable (everyone felt sorry for her), unattractive (tall, skinny, glasses, no one loved her), anal (obsessively neat), oral (always eating), genital (trying hard), and non-Jewish (finds use of two Yiddish slang words very intellectual). Miss Reingold greeted me efficiently. ~ Luke Rhinehart
Slang quotes by Luke Rhinehart
Okay," she murmured. "I love you."
"I love you too."
She looked up at Holgar and realized that he didn't understand. She could feel her heartbeat speeding up, and she shook her head. His smile began to fade.
"Not as a friend, or as a partner. Holgar, I - I love you, and I want to be with you."
His smile faded, and his eyes took on a strange look. She could feel herself beginning to panic. He doesn't feel the same way. That's okay. At least I told him.
"Like a mate?" he asked.
She almost started laughing. A mate was British slang for a best friend. But that's not what Holgar was likely referencing. He was a werewolf, and they called their spouses mates.
"Like a mate," she said, managing not to giggle at the unexpected language barrier.
He still looked confused and a little lost.
"For helvede," she said, using his favourite curse word. And then she leaned forward and kissed him.
She tasted surprise on his lips for just a moment, and then he wrapped his arms around her and crushed her to him. she would have to do a healing spell on her bruised ribs later, but at the moment she didn't care. All she cared about was the passion, the yearning, she felt from him.
When at last they broke apart, she whispered again, "I love you."
"I love you too," he said.
And looking into his eyes this time, she knew that they were talking about the same thing.
"So, do we want to give us a shot?" she asked, breathless.

It is a mass language only in the same sense that its baseball slang is born of baseball players. That is, it is a language which is being molded by writers to do delicate things and yet be within the grasp of superficially educated people. It is not a natural growth, much as its proletarian writers would like to think so. But compared with it at its best, English has reached the Alexandrian stage of formalism and decay. ~ Raymond Chandler

My parents went through the dictionary looking for a beautiful name, nearly called me Banyan, flicked on a few pages and came to China, which is cockney rhyming slang for mate. ~ China Mieville

We played a festival in Ireland once, and in the middle of 'New Slang,' the Scissor Sisters kicked in across the field on this mega stage. It was a little distracting. It was hard to keep track of what I was supposed to sing. ~ James Mercer

I am getting rather astonishing in my Italian conversation. I believe I talk a mixture of Dante and the worst modern slang. ~ Oscar Wilde
Slang quotes by Oscar Wilde
Sure am glad I'm not royalty," I muttered. "I wouldn't want to have to bump uglies with someone I can't stand. On a regular basis. And no one else."
"Ow!" I exclaimed, trying to yank my fingers from Trent but finding them caught. Then I colored, realizing what I'd said. "Oh ... sorry," I stammered, meaning it. "That was insensitive."
Trent's frown turned into a sly smirk. "Bump uglies?" he said, eyes on the table behind me. "You are a font of gutter slang, Rachel. We must do this again. ~ Kim Harrison
