Merrill Meewee knew his stones. As a boy in Kenya, skipping stones was his favorite free-time activity. There had been an abundance of saucer-shaped missiles on the banks of his father's own fishpond. Fat, river-smoothed disks, they skipped ten, twelve, sixteen times before slipping beneath the surface with a watery plop. His father, a man of little wealth but great forbearance, was not pleased with his boy's solitary pastime, but he never ordered him to stop. Instead, he asked the boy how many stones he thought the pond could hold. I don't know, Meewee remembered answering. A hundred thousand?

Oh, such a big number! And how many stones do you suppose you've thrown already?

Merrill, who was an excellent student, calculated the number of stones he might have tossed in an hour and how many free hours were left each day after school and chores, how many afternoons in how many years since he first discovered the sport. I would estimate 14,850, he informed his father with a certain amount of swagger.

His father was impressed. So many? And all of them have gone to the bottom?

Of course they've gone to the bottom, he had said, embarrassed by his father's apparent ignorance. They're stones. They're heavier than water.

And heavier than fishes?

Of course heavier than fishes.

Good, good, his father concluded, patting him on the head. Keep at it, son, and soon I won't have to work so hard.

Skipping Stones quotes by David Marusek
I know you probably feel like there's no color left in the world. Like there's no light, instead all darkness. But there's sunshine. There are colorful flowers all around us. And for me, you're the only thing ... the only one I see. The only one I've seen in a long time. I know it's hard to imagine, but one day you'll see the colors again. ~ J.B. McGee
Skipping Stones quotes by J.B. McGee
I saw a pattern forming, like a series of skipping stones that sent ripples through the generations: all the granddaughters and grandmothers who loved each other, all the mothers left stranded in between. ~ Nadja Spiegelman
Skipping Stones quotes by Nadja Spiegelman
Because I want to know if I'm allowed to kiss your tears away. Because I want to be able to hold your hand. Because I like you. ~ J.B. McGee
Skipping Stones quotes by J.B. McGee
The place had enormous possibilities. He realized that at once. The stream, of course, was perfect for sailing toy boats, for skipping stones, and, in the event of failing inspiration, for falling into. Several of the trees appeared to have been specifically designed for climbing, and one huge, white old birch overhanging the stream promised the exhilarating combination of climbing a tree and falling into the water, all at one time. ~ David Eddings
Skipping Stones quotes by David Eddings
Stoans want to be lissent to. Them big brown stoans in the formers feal they want to stan up and talk like men. Some times youwl see them lying on the groun with ther humps and hollers theywl say to you, Sit a wyl and res easy why dont you. Then when youre sitting on them theywl talk and theywl tel if you lissen. Theywl tel whats in them but you wont hear nothing what theyre saying without you go as fas as the stoan. You myt think a stoan is slow thats becaws you wont see it moving. Wont see it walking a roun. That dont mean its slow tho. There are the many cools of Addom which they are the party cools of stoan. Moving in ther millyings which is the girt dants of the every thing its the fastes thing there is it keaps the stilness going. Reason you wont see it move its so far a way in to the stoan. If you cud fly way way up like a saddelite bird over the sea and you lookit down you wunt see the waves moving youwd see them change 1 way to a nother only you wunt see them moving youwd be too far a way. You wunt see nothing only a changing stilness. Its the same with a stoan. ~ Russell Hoban
Skipping Stones quotes by Russell Hoban
I had always been aware that the Universe is sad; everything in it, animate or inanimate, the wild creatures, the stones, the stars, was enveloped in the great sadness, pervaded by it. Existence had no use. It was without end or reason. The most beautfiul things in it, a flower or a song, as well as the most compelling, a desire or a thought, were pointless. So great a sorrow. And I knew that the only rest from my anxiety - for I had been trembling even in infancy - lay in acknowledging and absorbing this sadness. ~ Hayden Carruth
Skipping Stones quotes by Hayden Carruth
Throw your stick and stones, throw your bombs and your blows, but you're not gonna break my soul. ~ Katy Perry
Skipping Stones quotes by Katy Perry
The church is about life-giving relationships that come together in gatherings. When we gather, we don't primarily assemble in the style of the synagogue: to learn, to receive, to evaluate, and to contemplate. Rather, we assemble in the style of the temple: to worship, to pray, to encounter God, and to bring our offering. We come as living stones, fitted together in the house of God as a collective dwelling place. ~ Mark Perry
Skipping Stones quotes by Mark Perry
This, said Squealer, was something called tactics. He repeated a number of times, "Tactics, comrades, tactics!" skipping round and whisking his tail with a merry laugh. The animals were not certain what the word meant, but Squealer spoke so persuasively, and the three dogs who happened to be with him growled so threateningly, that they accepted his explanation without further questions. ~ George Orwell
Skipping Stones quotes by George Orwell
In creation myths, a god shapes mud or clay into living form, much like a potter throws a pot or a sculptor reveals the statue within a block of marble. But a writer has to create his own clay or stone before he can begin shaping life from it. ~ Stuart Dybek
Skipping Stones quotes by Stuart Dybek
Death approaches, which is always impending like the stone over Tantalus: then comes superstition with which he who is imbued can never have peace of mind.
[Lat., Accedit etiam mors, quae quasi saxum Tantalo semper impendit: tum superstitio, qua qui est imbutus quietus esse numquam potest.] ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Skipping Stones quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
No way this could be seen as probable or possible, unless you think of a blow between the eyes, a sudden calamity. The stroke of fate that leaves a man a cripple, the wicked joke that turns clear eyes into blind stones. ~ Alice Munro
Skipping Stones quotes by Alice Munro
Rolling Stones, Beatles, we gave them all the break they were looking for. All they needed was a good opening act, and we went out there and performed as well as we could ... over 15,000 kids chanting. ~ Bobby Hatfield
Skipping Stones quotes by Bobby Hatfield
As the builders say, the larger stones do not lie well without the lesser. ~ Plato
Skipping Stones quotes by Plato
I don't believe the world will end, but i believe stones will wear away. so i don't care what you place on my tombstone. ~ Darnell Lamont Walker
Skipping Stones quotes by Darnell Lamont Walker
At a certain point, you say to the woods, to the sea, to the mountains, the world, Now I am ready. Now I will stop and be wholly attentive. You empty yourself and wait, listening. After a time you hear it: there is nothing there. There is nothing but those things only, those created objects, discrete, growing or holding, or swaying, being rained on or raining, held, flooding or ebbing, standing, or spread. You feel the world's word as a tension, a hum, a single chorused note everywhere the same. This is it: this hum is the silence. Nature does utter a peep - just this one. The birds and insects, the meadows and swamps and rivers and stones and mountains and clouds: they all do it; they all don't do it. There is a vibrancy to the silence, a suppression, as if someone were gagging the world. But you wait, you give your life's length to listening, and nothing happens. The ice rolls up, the ice rolls back, and still that single note obtains. The tension, or lack of it, is intolerable. The silence is not actually suppression: instead, it is all there is. ~ Annie Dillard
Skipping Stones quotes by Annie Dillard
The Rolling Stones seemed very loose and wild, but when you read about them, you realize that everything they did is very deliberate. ~ Daniel Humm
Skipping Stones quotes by Daniel Humm
I can't help my mind skipping over the here-and-now and racing on, to what might come next. Consequence and regret and other might-have-beens: plotting out every angle and scenario, knowing all along that the path I take means missing something else. ~ Abigail Haas
Skipping Stones quotes by Abigail Haas
A beam from the everlasting sun of God.
Rude and unresponsive are the stones;
Yet in them divine things lie concealed;
I hear their imprisoned chant:–
"We are fragments of the universe,
Chips of the rock whereon God laid the foundation of the world: ~ Helen Keller
Skipping Stones quotes by Helen Keller
Rattle his bones
over the stones
its only a pauper
who nobody owns ~ Neil Gaiman
Skipping Stones quotes by Neil Gaiman
If I ever stop challenging myself, then I am getting lazy and comfortable and I am no longer growing. I hope to use life's challenges as stepping stones to ever greater things. ~ Roz Savage
Skipping Stones quotes by Roz Savage
There's so much around, you don't know what to listen to. All I've got at home is Bo Diddley, some Stones and Beatles stuff, and old jazz records. ~ Syd Barrett
Skipping Stones quotes by Syd Barrett
Each and every tiny thing, every human, animal, bird, fish, insect, plant and stones on Earth Mother vibrate to their own individual frequency that creates its own language. Learning to listen and feel each vibration is not easy if all we hear is our own voice. We must be sensitive to the vibrations of the Earth so that we may understand nature and her needs. ~ Lee Standing Bear Moore
Skipping Stones quotes by Lee Standing Bear Moore
A Time to Talk
When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don't stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven't hoed,
And shout from where I am, What is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod: I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit. ~ Robert Frost
Skipping Stones quotes by Robert Frost
I probably lived more of a rock-star life when I was 15. I got in trouble a fair amount. I cared more about hanging out and skipping school than studying. ~ Kristen Wiig
Skipping Stones quotes by Kristen Wiig
Playing scales is like a boxer skipping rope or punching a bag. It's not the thing in itself; it's preparatory to the activity ~ Barney Kessel
Skipping Stones quotes by Barney Kessel
For we are all bound in stories, and as the years pile up they turn to stone, layer upon layer, building our lives. ~ Steven Erikson
Skipping Stones quotes by Steven Erikson
Then the Old Man of the Earth stooped over the floor of the cave, raised a huge stone from it, and left it leaning. It disclosed a great hole that went plumb-down.
"That is the way," he said.
"But there are no stairs."
"You must throw yourself in. There is no other way. ~ George MacDonald
Skipping Stones quotes by George MacDonald
But it did not much care for hunting, and then like so many geldings it spent much of its time mourning for its lost stones: a discontented horse. ~ Patrick O'Brian
Skipping Stones quotes by Patrick O'Brian
Above the decorous walking around me, sounds of footsteps leaving the verandas of far-flung buildings and moving toward the walks and over the walks to the asphalt drives lined with whitewashed stones, those cryptic messages for men and women, boys and girls heading quietly toward where the visitors waited, and we moving not in the mood of worship but of judgement; as though even here in the filtering dusk, here beneath the deep indigo sky, here, alive with looping swifts and darting moths, here in the hereness of the night not yet lighted by the moon that looms blood-red behind the chapel like a fallen sun, its radiance shedding not upon the here-dusk of twittering bats, nor on the there-night of cricket and whippoorwill, but focused short-rayed upon our place of convergence; and we drifting forward with rigid motions, limbs stiff and voices now silent, as though on exhibit even in the dark, and the moon a white man's bloodshot eye. ~ Ralph Ellison
Skipping Stones quotes by Ralph Ellison
A line will take us hours maybe; / Yet if it does not seem a moment's thought, / Our stitching and unstitching has been naught ... Better go down upon your marrow-bones / And scrub a kitchen pavement, or break stones ... For to articulate sweet sounds together / Is to work harder than all these, and yet / Be thought an idler by the noisy set ... ~ William Butler Yeats
Skipping Stones quotes by William Butler Yeats
There we stood. Elephants to our left, lions to our right, only a stone's throw from hippos and leopards, and what were they doing? Playing with a doodlebug.
Don't we all? Myriads of mighty angels encircle us, the presence of our Maker engulfs us, the witness of a thousand galaxies and constellations calls to us, the flowing tide of God's history carries us, the crowning of Christ as King of the universe awaits us, but we can't get our eyes off of the doodlebugs of life: paychecks, gadgets, vacations, and weekends. ~ Max Lucado
Skipping Stones quotes by Max Lucado
There are no stones
honeycombed into
an abusive tongue
strong enough
to clip my wings. ~ Susie Clevenger
Skipping Stones quotes by Susie Clevenger
But I know that the body I inhabit will only take so much, can only go so far. Rocks, stones, even the leaning twisting trees, all are harder and more enduring.
The stones have weight and mass, and agonised trees are rooted deep in the craggy soil. ~ Eva Figes
Skipping Stones quotes by Eva Figes
Standing is stupid,
Crawling's a curse,
Skipping is silly,
Walking is worse.
Hopping is hopeless,
Jumping's a chore,
Sitting is senseless,
Leaning's a bore.
Running's ridiculous,
Jogging's insane-
Guess I'll go upstairs and
Lie down again. ~ Shel Silverstein
Skipping Stones quotes by Shel Silverstein
Recreate your life, always, always.
Remove the stones, plant rose bushes and make sweets."

Begin again. ~ Cora Coralina
Skipping Stones quotes by Cora Coralina
The black shape of it running from dark to dark. Then a distant low rumble. Not thunder. You could feel it under your feet. A sound without cognate and so without description. Something imponderable shifting out there in the dark. The earth itself contracting with the cold. It did not come again. What time of year? What age the child? ... The silence. The salitter drying from the earth. The mudstained shapes of flooded cities burned to the waterline. At a crossroads a ground set with dolmen stones where the spoken bones of oracles lay moldering. No sound but the wind. ~ Cormac McCarthy
Skipping Stones quotes by Cormac McCarthy
ONE WORD
One word
- one stone
in a cold river.
One more stone
I'll need many stones
if I'm going to get over. ~ Olav H. Hauge
Skipping Stones quotes by Olav H. Hauge
I don't know many women who can relate to Sharon Stone and the kind of movies she does. I don't know a lot of guys who can relate to Tom Cruise's movies because they're on a kind of fantastic level. ~ Kim Cattrall
Skipping Stones quotes by Kim Cattrall
Metal. In some ways, that was the true mark of mankind. Man tamed the stones, the bones of the earth below. Man tamed the fire, that ephemeral, consuming soul of life. And combining the two, he drew forth the marrow of the rocks themselves, then made molten tools. ~ Brandon Sanderson
Skipping Stones quotes by Brandon Sanderson
This then is Borgia Rome: a city where a traveler entering the gates must still cross acres of country before he reaches the center, where animals still outnumber citizens, goats and cattle grazing the imperial ruins, their insistent teeth pulling weeds - and mortar - from between the stones of history. A city still struggling with a chasm of hardship between rich and poor, still ripped apart by gross family violence. But also a place of growing magnificence and confidence where, for the first time in centuries, the future no longer looks bleaker than the past, and where the new Pope has chosen for himself a name designed to foster a belief in magnificence again. Alexander ~ Sarah Dunant
Skipping Stones quotes by Sarah Dunant
He didn't shout, "I love you!" for example, because self-conscious people don't shout that sort of thing. At that time, however, the Norwegian had other opportunities of expressing himself. He could express irritation or anger by going outside and chopping down a tree, or throwing big stones in the water.*
*As is known, the Norwegian coast is surrounded by thousands of larger and smaller stones (The Skerries). This is very likely a sign that there was considerable irritation during the Norwegian Stone Age. ~ Odd Borretzen
Skipping Stones quotes by Odd Borretzen
If you purchased the latest Joss Stone CD, what you're saying is that you're an employee of VH1. ~ Christian Finnegan
Skipping Stones quotes by Christian Finnegan
One day in May, the whiteness in Milo's brain turns into that of a flock of Canadian geese that fills the entire sky. Pan to the young man staring up at them. Clinging to his arm is a pert and pretty, dark-haired girl by the name of Viviane, also looking up. Their mouths are open in amazement. Milo recites a few lines from "The Wild Swans at Coole." De trees are in deir autumn beauty, De woodland paths are dry, Under de October twilight de water Mirrors a still sky; Upon de brimming water among de stones Are nine-and-fifty swans. Viviane looks at him adoringly. "Sounds beautiful!" she says. "Who's it by?" "Yeats." "Never heard of him. ~ Nancy Huston
Skipping Stones quotes by Nancy Huston
Better to toil blindly, beating every stone in turn for grains of gold, whether they contain any or not, than lie down in apathetic decay. ~ John Muir
Skipping Stones quotes by John Muir
Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones. ~ Charlotte Bronte
Skipping Stones quotes by Charlotte Bronte
I would go to newsstands and buy paperbacks they were selling for tourists, usually bestsellers and mass market paperbacks. In the beginning, it was like going to the Rosetta Stone
I didn?t understand anything, I'd get a headache
but I began to figure it out, and I'd read a lot of Stephen King paperbacks. I've always said he was my English professor. ~ Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Skipping Stones quotes by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Deep in the shady sadness of a vale Far sunken from the healthy breath of morn, Far from the fiery noon and eve's one star, Sat gray-haired Saturn, quiet as a stone, Still as the silence round about his lair. ~ John Keats
Skipping Stones quotes by John Keats
Human language, for us moderns, has swung in on itself, turning its back on the beings around us. Language is a human property, suitable only for communication with other persons. We talk to people; we do not speak to the ground underfoot. We've largely forgotten the incantatory and invocational use of speech as a way of bringing ourselves into deeper rapport with the beings around us, or of calling the living land into resonance with us. It is a power we still brush up against whenever we use our words to bless and to curse, or to charm someone we're drawn to. But we wield such eloquence only to sway other people, and so we miss the greater magnetism, the gravitational power that lies within such speech. The beaver gliding across the pond, the fungus gripping a thick trunk, a boulder shattered by its tumble down a cliff or the rain splashing upon those granite fragments -- we talk about such beings, the weather and the weathered stones, but we do not talk to them.

Entranced by the denotative power of words to define, to order, to represent the things around us, we've overlooked the songful dimension of language so obvious to our oral [storytelling] ancestors. We've lost our ear for the music of language -- for the rhythmic, melodic layer of speech by which earthly things overhear us. ~ David Abram
Skipping Stones quotes by David Abram
The desert could not be claimed or owned–it was a piece of cloth carried by winds, never held down by stones, and given a hundred shifting names... Its caravans, those strange rambling feasts and cultures, left nothing behind, not an ember. All of us, even those with European homes and children in the distance, wished to remove the clothing of our countries. It was a place of faith. We disappeared into landscape. ~ Michael Ondaatje
Skipping Stones quotes by Michael Ondaatje
Trust compared to a valuable stone that has been shattered, cannot be restored to its original form. ~ Ellen J. Barrier
Skipping Stones quotes by Ellen J. Barrier
At my Rolling Stones' tour, the camera was a protection. I used it in a Zen way. ~ Annie Leibovitz
