Who is more real? Homer or Ulysses? Shakespeare or Hamlet? Burroughs or Tarzan? ~ Robert A. Heinlein
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Robert A. Heinlein
There lives within the very flame of love A kind of wick or snuff that will abate it. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
My favorite play is Hamlet. It was my first love when it comes to Shakespeare, and I've read it and seen it performed more than just about every other Shakespeare play. I've had the "To be or not to be" monologue memorized since I was 15, and it's just really close to my heart. ~ Ian Doescher
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Ian Doescher
Mad I call it, for to define true madness, what is't to be nothing else but mad? ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
It seems only fair," Matthew continued. "A bit of karma, if you will." He twirled the stake again. "Shall we see how long you scream?"
"Are you ever going to shut up?" I snapped, fear and irritation filling me in equal measures. "This isn't your monologue, Hamlet. It's the battle scene, in case you've forgotten."
His eyes narrowed so fast they nearly sparked. They were the color of honey on fire. One of the others growled like an animal, low in his throat. It made all the hairs on my arms stand straight up.
I was going to die for making fun of Shakespeare.
My English Lit professor would be so proud. ~ Alyxandra Harvey
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Alyxandra Harvey
This is the very ecstasy of love. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
My enlightened racial consciousness demands that I reject the so-called greatness of William Faulkner and William Shakespeare. I don't have time for any of that Hamlet jive -- but Marvel superheroes are super cool. ~ Ta-Nehisi Coates
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates
You cannot call it love, for at your age the heyday in the blood is tame ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
What, then, can Shakespearean tragedy, on this brief view, tell us about human time in an eternal world? It offers imagery of crisis, of futures equivocally offered, by prediction and by action, as actualities; as a confrontation of human time with other orders, and the disastrous attempt to impose limited designs upon the time of the world. What emerges from Hamlet is--after much futile, illusory action--the need of patience and readiness. The 'bloody period' of Othello is the end of a life ruined by unseasonable curiosity. The millennial ending of Macbeth, the broken apocalypse of Lear, are false endings, human periods in an eternal world. They are researches into death in an age too late for apocalypse, too critical for prophecy; an age more aware that its fictions are themselves models of the human design on the world. But it was still an age which felt the human need for ends consonant with the past, the kind of end Othello tries to achieve by his final speech; complete, concordant. As usual, Shakespeare allows him his tock; but he will not pretend that the clock does not go forward. The human perpetuity which Spenser set against our imagery of the end is represented here also by the kingly announcements of Malcolm, the election of Fortinbras, the bleak resolution of Edgar.

In apocalypse there are two orders of time, and the earthly runs to a stop; the cry of woe to the inhabitants of the earth means the end of their time; henceforth 'time shall be no more.' I ~ Frank Kermode
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Frank Kermode
In the corrupted currents of this world
Offence's gilded hand may shove by justice,
And oft 'tis seen the wicked prize itself
Buys out the law. . .
(Claudius, from Hamlet, Act 3, scene 3) ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
Imagine the same scene in HAMLET if Pullman had written it. Hamlet, using a mystic pearl, places the poison in the cup to kill Claudius. We are all told Claudius will die by drinking the cup. Then Claudius dies choking on a chicken bone at lunch. Then the Queen dies when Horatio shows her the magical Mirror of Death. This mirror appears in no previous scene, nor is it explained why it exists. Then Ophelia summons up the Ghost from Act One and kills it, while she makes a speech denouncing the evils of religion. Ophelia and Hamlet are parted, as it is revealed in the last act that a curse will befall them if they do not part ways. ~ John C. Wright
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by John C. Wright
To be honest, as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
I am very proud, revengeful,
ambitious, with more offences at my beck than I have
thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape,
or time to act them in. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
When Rosencrantz asks Hamlet, "Good my lord, what is your cause of distemper? You do surely bar the door upon your own liberty, if you deny your grief to your friends"(III, ii, 844-846), Hamlet responds, "Why, look you now, how unworthy a thing you make of me! You would play upon me; you would seem to know my stops; you would pluck from my lowest note to the top of my compass; and there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ, yet cannot you make it speak. 'Sblood, do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, you cannot play upon me." (III,ii, 371-380) ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
It is difficult to put into words what I suffered-the longing that seemed to be tearing my heart out by the roots, the dreadful sense of being alone in an empty universe, the agonies that thrilled through me as if the blood were running ice-cold through my veins, the disgust with living, the impossibility of dying. Shakespeare himself never described this torture; but he counts it, in Hamlet, among the terrible of all the evils of existence. I had stopped composing; my mind seemed to become feebler as my feelings grew more intense. I did nothing. One power was left to me-to suffer. ~ Hector Berlioz
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Hector Berlioz
My liege, and madam, to expostulate What majesty should be, what duty is, Why day is day, night night, and time is time, Were nothing but to waste night, day and time. Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes, I will be brief. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
The ordinary price paid for a new play was less than seven pounds; Oldys, on what authority is not known, says that Shakespeare received only five pounds for "Hamlet. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
After your death you were better have a bad epitaph than their ill report while you live. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
+"I'm sick in the heart."~Hamlet ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
I know that David Tennant's Hamlet isn't till July. And lots of people are going to be doing Dr Who in Hamlet jokes, so this is just me getting it out of the way early, to avoid the rush ...
To be, or not to be, that is the question. Weeelll ... More of A question really. Not THE question. Because, well, I mean, there are billions and billions of questions out there, and well, when I say billions, I mean, when you add in the answers, not just the questions, weeelll, you're looking at numbers that are positively astronomical and ... for that matter the other question is what you lot are doing on this planet in the first place, and er, did anyone try just pushing this little red button? ~ Neil Gaiman
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Neil Gaiman
Shakespeare carries us to such a lofty strain of intelligent activity, as to suggest a wealth which beggars his own; and we then feel that the splendid works which he has created, and which in other hours we extol as a sort of self-existent poetry, take no stronger hold of real nature than the shadow of a passing traveller on the rock. The inspiration which uttered itself in Hamlet and Lear could utter things as good from day to day, for ever. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Queen. The lady doth protest too much, methinks. [225] Hamlet ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
If I had any doubts at all about the justice of my dislike for Shakespeare, that doubt vanished completely. What a crude, immoral, vulgar, and senseless work Hamlet is. The whole thing is based on pagan vengeance; the only aim is to gather together as many effects as possible; there is no rhyme or reason about it. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Leo Tolstoy
The books are all leather, and the titles are old. I pause at a collection of Shakespeare. Othello. Romeo and Juliet. A Midsummer Night's Dream. I pull Hamlet out and look at it, but then set it back down on the shelf.
I pass a row of books on philosophy, and another on astrology. Up and down I go, pausing now and then, but not pulling any books out. I'm not sure what I expected to find. The Idiot's Guide to Time Travel? ~ Mandy Hubbard
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by Mandy Hubbard
One of the popular songs in Tyler's rebellion was the familiar couplet: "When Adam delved and Eve span, Who was then the gentleman?" Shakespeare refers to it in "Hamlet," where the grave-diggers speak as follows: "First Clown. Come, my spade. There is no ancient gentleman but gardners, ditchers and grave-makers; they hold up Adam's profession. Second Clown. Was he a gentleman? First Clown. He was the first that ever bore arms. Second Clown. Why, he had none. First Clown. What, art a heathen? How dost thou understand the Scripture? The Scripture says, Adam digged; could he dig without arms?" (Act 5, ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
HAMLET To be or not to be - that is the question: 64 Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer 65 The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, 66 Or to take arms against a sea of troubles 67 And, by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep - 68 No more - and by a sleep to say we end 69 The heartache and the thousand natural shocks 70 That flesh is heir to - 'tis a consummation 71 Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep - 72 To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub, 73 For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, 74 When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
But to my mind, though I am native here, And to the manner born, it is a custom, More honored in the breach than the observance. ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
O Hamlet, what a falling-off was there! ~ William Shakespeare
Shakespeare Hamlet Revenge quotes by William Shakespeare
God is not an actor within the larger scheme of things. He is not a muscle-bound Jupiter, bullying the littler ones. He is the Author of the whole thing. We never ask how much of Hamlet's role was contributed by Hamlet, and how much by Shakespeare. That is not a question that can be answered with 70/30 or 50/50 or 90/10. The right answer is 100/100. Hamlet's actions are all Hamlet's and they are all Shakespeare's. Douglas Wilson ~ Douglas Wilson
