There is another reason also why the soul has traveled safely in this obscurity; it has suffered: for the way of suffering is safer, and also more profitable, than that of rejoicing and of action. In suffering God gives strength, but in action and in joy the soul does but show its own weakness and imperfections. And in suffering, the soul practices and acquires virtue, and becomes pure, wiser, and more cautious. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
19. Before the divine fire is introduced into the substance of the soul and united with it through perfect and complete purgation and purity, its flame, which is the Holy Spirit, wounds the soul by destroying and consuming the imperfections of its bad habits. And this is the work of the Holy Spirit, in which he disposes it for divine union and transformation in God through love. The very fire of love that afterward is united with the soul, glorifying it, is what previously assailed it by purging it, just as the fire that penetrates a log of wood is the same that first makes an assault on the wood, wounding it with the flame, drying it out, and stripping it of its unsightly qualities until it is so disposed that it can be penetrated and transformed into the fire. Spiritual writers call this activity the purgative way. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Under these circumstances, if they meet with no one who understands the matter, these persons fall away, and abandon the right road; or become weak, or at least put hindrances in the way of their further advancement, because of the great efforts they make to proceed in their former way of meditation, fatiguing their natural powers beyond measure. They think that their state is the result of negligence or of sin. All their own efforts are now in vain, because God is leading them by another and a very different road, that of contemplation. Their first road was that of discursive reflection, but the second knows no imagination or reasoning. 4. It behooves those ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
the Battle of San Juan. Two years later, the regiment held its first reunion, with a grand three-day celebration at Oklahoma City. The young metropolis would show the world that it could do things. There would be visitors from every state. "T. R.," national hero, would attend. A grand display of fireworks, the largest ever seen west of the Mississippi, was ordered. Quanah was besought to bring a troop of Indians for the parade. They would be fed and cared for, paid a small sum, and could see the show. The agent agreed, and there was no difficulty in assembling a troop. The young men gathered their gayest finery and borrowed the carefully saved costumes of their fathers, war bonnets, belts, and beads and feather ornaments. ~ U.C. Berkeley
San Juan quotes by U.C. Berkeley
Major General Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was an army officer and physician, born October 9, 1860 in Winchester, New Hampshire. His first assignment was in 1886 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona where he fought in the last campaign against the fierce Apache warrior Geronimo. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches 100 miles through hostile territory and was promoted to the rank of Captain, commanding a detachment of the 8th Infantry.

From 1887 to 1898, he served as a medical officer in a number of positions, the last of which was as the personal physician to President William McKinley. In 1898 at the beginning of the war with Spain, he was given command of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The regiment was soon to be known as the "Rough Riders." Wood lead his men on the famous charge up San Juan Hill and was given a field promotion to brigadier general.

In 1898 he was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago de Cuba. In 1920, as a retired Major General, Wood ran as the Republican candidate for the presidency of the United States, losing to Warren Harding. In 1921 following his defeat, General Wood accepted the post of Governor General of the Philippines. He held this position from 1921 to 1927, when he died of a brain tumor in Boston, on 7 August 1927, at 66 years of age after which he was buried, with full honors, in Arlington National Cemetery. ~ Hank Bracker
San Juan quotes by Hank Bracker
Remember the past and work for the future...
But never forget to live today! ~ Carlo Jose San Juan
San Juan quotes by Carlo Jose San Juan
The virtuous soul that is alone and without a master, is like a lone burning coal; it will grow colder rather than hotter. Those who fall alone remain alone in their fall, and they value their souls little since they entrust it to themselves alone. If you do not fear falling alone, do you presume that you will rise up alone? Consider how much more can be accomplished by two together than by one alone. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
The second cause whence these rebellions sometimes proceed is the devil, who, in order to disquiet and disturb the soul, at times when it is at prayer or is striving to pray, contrives to stir up these motions of impurity in its nature; and if the soul gives heed to any of these, they cause it great harm. For through fear of these not only do persons become lax in prayer - which is the aim of the devil when he begins to strive with them - but some give up prayer altogether, because they think that these things attack them more during that exercise than apart from it, which is true, since the devil attacks them then more than at other times, so that they may give up spiritual exercises. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
How to Avoid Pleurisy: Never make love to a girl named Candy on the tailgate of a half-ton Ford pickup during a chill rain in April out on Grandview Point in San Juan County, Utah. ~ Edward Abbey
San Juan quotes by Edward Abbey
No matter how much individuals do through their own efforts, they cannot actively purify themselves enough to be disposed in the least degree for the divine union of the perfection of love. God must take over and purge them in that fire that is dark for them, as we will explain. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
That summer, there was a Name the Babies contest, an annual event organized by the Whale Museum on San Juan Island. A young girl from Bellingham submitted the winning entry. The little orca should be named "Luna", she wrote, because "the whale explores the ocean like the moon explores the Earth. ~ Michael Parfit
San Juan quotes by Michael Parfit
Where there is no love, put love
and you will find love. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
having nothing and possessing all things, ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
BOOK THE FIRST Which treats of the Night of Sense. STANZA THE FIRST On a dark night, Kindled in love with yearnings - oh, happy chance! - I went forth without being observed, My house being now at rest. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Again,7 the condition to which God brought Job in order that he might converse with God, was not that of delight and bliss, of which he there speaks, and to which he had been accustomed. God left him in misery, naked on a dung-hill, abandoned and even persecuted by his friends, killed with bitterness and grief, covered with worms:8 then it was that the Most High, Who lifteth up "the poor out of the dunghill,"9 was pleased to descend and speak to Job face to face,10 revealing to him "the deep mysteries of His wisdom,"11 as He had never done before in the days of Job's prosperity. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love (CCC 1022; by St. John of the Cross) ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
If you do not learn to deny yourself, you can make no progress in perfection. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Sounds of a San Juan night, drifting across the city through layers of humid air; sounds of life and movement, people getting ready and people giving up, the sound of hope and the sound of hanging on, and behind them all, the quiet, deadly ticking of a thousand hungry clocks, the lonely sound of time passing in the long Caribbean night. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
San Juan quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
He was drawn to painful thoughts, fear, darkness. And Reyna's darkest, most painful memory was San Juan. Her biggest fear? Coming back here. ~ Rick Riordan
San Juan quotes by Rick Riordan
Where would the would-be "purists" draw the line between native and alien elements? This whole planet was altered by the hand of man.
A birder who scorned the alien Sky Larks might stand on San Juan and salute the native eagles . . . but some of those eagles had been released here; and they were living on an unnaturally high population of rabbits, from another continent, introduced here. The rabbits, in turn, were probably feeding on alien plants from other lands that were naturalized here - if the San Juan roadsides were anything like all the other roadsides in North America. And we birders of European descent were introduced here also, a few generations back. Even my Native American friends of the night before could claim to be "native" in only a relative sense; their ancestors had come across the Bering land bridge from Asia. None of us is native here. ~ Kenn Kaufman
San Juan quotes by Kenn Kaufman
Many praise and bless Jesus as long as they receive some consolation from Him, but if He hide Himself and leave them for a little while, they fall either into complaining or into excessive dejection. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
On January 12, on a firing range located in a small valley called San Juan, at the end of the island in the province of Oriente, hundreds of soldiers from the defeated army of Batista had been lined up in a trench knee-deep and more than fifty yards long. Their hands were tied behind their backs, and they were machine-gunned there where they stood. Then with bulldozers the trenches were turned into mass graves. There had been no trial of any kind for those men. ~ Armando Valladares
San Juan quotes by Armando Valladares
In order to be united with him, the will must consequently be emptied of and detached from all disordered appetite and satisfaction with respect to every particular thing in which it can rejoice, whether earthly or heavenly, temporal or spiritual, so that purged and cleansed of all inordinate satisfactions, joys, and appetites it might be wholly occupied in loving God with its affections. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Everyone knows that not to go forward on this road is to turn back, and not to gain ground is to lose. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Now that I no longer desire all, I have it all without desire. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
To endure all things, with an equable and peaceful mind, not only brings with it many blessings to the soul; but it also enables us, in the midst of our difficulties, to have a clear judgment about them, and to minister the fitting remedy for them. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Contemplation is nothing else but a secret, peaceful, and loving infusion of God, which, if admitted, will set the soul on fire with the spirit of love, as I shall show in the explanation of the following verse. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Love is the inclination, strength, and power for the soul in making its way to God, for love unites it with God. The more degrees of love it has, the more deeply it enters into God and centers itself in him. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Ana had experienced reactions like Ramon's in the mirrored salons of Sevilla society, in the waxed halls of the Convento de las Buenas Madres, on the streets of Cadiz and San Juan. It was a look that said, "I see you, but I deign not to speak to you." It said, "I see you but I do not share the high opinion you have of yourself." It said, "I see you but you're not who I want to see." It said, "To me, you don't exist. ~ Esmeralda Santiago
San Juan quotes by Esmeralda Santiago
When I'm not working, my family and I have a house in the San Juan Islands. We've been here since '94. ~ Elizabeth Pena
San Juan quotes by Elizabeth Pena
To reach satisfaction in all, desire satisfaction in nothing. To come to possess all, desire the possession of nothing. To arrive at being all, desire to be nothing. To come to the knowledge of all, desire the knowledge of nothing. To come to enjoy what you have not, you must go by a way in which you enjoy not. To come to the possession you have not, you must go by a way in which you possess not. To come to what you are not, you must go by a way in which you are not.
John of the Cross ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
The third sign we have for ascertaining whether this dryness be the purgation of sense, is inability to meditate and make reflections, and to excite the imagination, as before, notwithstanding all the efforts we may make; for God begins now to communicate Himself, no longer through the channel of sense, as formerly, in consecutive reflections, by which we arranged and divided our knowledge, but in pure spirit, which admits not of successive reflections, and in the act of pure contemplation, to which neither the interior nor the exterior senses of our lower nature can ascend. Hence it is that the fancy and the imagination cannot help or suggest any reflections, nor use them ever afterwards. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Says, he who humbleth himself shall be exalted. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Well and good if all things change, O Lord God, provided I am rooted in You. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Therefore, if we would listen to the voice of God15 with due reverence, the soul must stand upright, and not lean on the affections of sense for support. As the prophet Habakkuk says of himself, "I will stand upon my watch, and fix my step upon the munition, and I will behold to see what may be said to me."16 To stand upon the watch is to cast off all desires; to fix the step, is to cease from reflections of sense, that I may behold and understand what God will speak to me. Thus out of this night springs first the knowledge of one's self, and on that, as on a foundation, is built up the knowledge of God. "Let me know myself," says St. Augustine, "and I shall then know Thee, O my God," for, as the philosophers say, one extreme is known by another. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
It is a great thing," says the author of the Imitation, forestalling St. John of the Cross, "a very great thing to be able to do without all solace, both human and divine, and to be willing to bear this exile of the heart for the honor of God, and in nothing seek self, and not to have regard to one's own merit. What great thing is it to be cheerful and devout when grace comes to thee? This is an hour desirable to all."3 This purgation of the sense comes ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Cliff swallows come back to Capistrano Mid-March. It takes them 3 weeks to fly 7,000 miles from Goya, Argentina. ~ Diana Hollingsworth Gessler
San Juan quotes by Diana Hollingsworth Gessler
Have a great love for those who contradict and fail to love you, for in this way love is begotten in a heart that has no love. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
For whereas speaking distracts, silence and work collect the thoughts and strengthen the spirit. As soon therefore as a person understands what has been said to him for his good, there is not further need to hear or to discuss; but to set himself in earnest to practice what he has learnt with silence and attention, in humility, charity, and contempt of self. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
All the while I had been in San Juan I'd condemned it without really disliking it. I felt that sooner or later I would see that third dimension, that depth that makes a city real and that you never see until you've been there awhile. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
San Juan quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt has been described as founder of the Bull Moose Party, the man who led his troops up San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War, a big game hunter, family man, civic servant and a host of other things. ~ Zig Ziglar
San Juan quotes by Zig Ziglar
San Juan points out that the life of mysticism begins with this great love which in itself overcomes all confusion, both of the soul and of the body. He says that the dark journey of the soul is man's soul gradually striving toward its goal, which is the pure and complete power to love. For as the mind gives man the power of reason, so the psychic life gives him the power of perpetual emotional activity. It gives him the power to feel so great and inevitably an intensity that everything else is overwhelmed. ~ Manly P. Hall
San Juan quotes by Manly P. Hall
God has to work in the soul in secret and in darkness because if we fully knew what was happening, and what Mystery, transformation, God and Grace will eventually ask of us, we would either try to take charge or stop the whole process. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
For its own well-being, the intellect should be doing what you condemn; that is, it should avoid busying itself with particular knowledge, for it cannot reach God through this knowledge, which would rather hinder it in its advance toward him. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
9. Never give up prayer, and should you find dryness and difficulty, persevere in it for this very reason. God often desires to see what love your soul has, and love is not tried by ease and satisfaction. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Piragua - cold syrup trickled over crushed ice - her favorite treat from her childhood in Viejo San Juan. ~ Rick Riordan
San Juan quotes by Rick Riordan
The past
the wild charge at the head of his men up San Juan Hill; the first years of his marriage when he worked late into the summer dusk down in the busy city for young Hildegarde whom he loved; the days before that when he sat smoking far into the night in the gloomy old Button house on Monroe Street with his grandfather-all these had faded like unsubstantial dreams from his mind as though they had never been. He did not remember. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
San Juan quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
I looked along the San Juan Islands and the coast of California, but I couldn't find the palette of green, granite, and dark blue that you can only find in Maine. ~ Parker Stevenson
San Juan quotes by Parker Stevenson
Some of these beginners, too, make little of their faults, and at other times become over-sad when they see themselves fall into them, thinking themselves to have been saints already; and thus they become angry and impatient with themselves, which is another imperfection. Often they beseech God, with great yearnings, that He will take from them their imperfections and faults, but they do this that they may find themselves at peace, and may not be troubled by them, rather than for God's sake; not realizing that, if He should take their imperfections from them, they would probably become prouder and more presumptuous still. They dislike praising others and love to be praised themselves; sometimes they seek out such praise. Herein they are like the foolish virgins, who, when their lamps could not be lit, sought oil from others. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
We grew up devout Catholics, so my trips to San Juan always include going to the churches that we used to go to and lighting candles and everything. Everything I do in San Juan is what I used to do with my mom, kind of as a tribute to her. ~ Cristela Alonzo
San Juan quotes by Cristela Alonzo
If a man wishes to be sure of the road he's traveling on, then he must close his syes and travel in the dark. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
How narrow is the gate and strait is the way that leadeth to life, and few there are that find it!6 are words of our Lord. 8. The narrow gate ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
14. I say this in order to make it clear that the one who would go to God relying on natural ability and reasoning will not be very spiritual. There are some who think that by pure force and the activity of the senses, which of itself is lowly and no more than natural, they can reach the strength and height of the supernatural spirit. One does not attain to this peak without surpassing and leaving aside the activity of the senses. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Some, too, will not leave for His sake a place which is to their taste, expecting to receive all the sweetness of God fully in their heart without moving a step, without mortifying themselves by the abandonment of a single pleasure or useless delight. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
David in this night says of himself, "My heart is inflamed, and my reins are changed, and I am brought to nothing, and knew not."2 That is, "my heart hath been inflamed" in the love of contemplation; ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole strength. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Many beginners also at times possess great spiritual avarice. They hardly ever seem content with the spirit God gives them. They become unhappy and peevish because they don't find the consolation they want in spiritual things. Many never have enough of hearing counsels, or learning spiritual maxims, or keeping them and reading books about them. They spend more time in these than in striving after mortification and the perfection of the interior poverty to which they are obliged. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
Letter 33 [To a discalced Carmelite nun in Segovia[63] Ubeda, October-November 1591] ... Have a great love for those who contradict and fail to love you, for in this way love is begotten in a heart that has no love. God so acts with us, for he loves us that we might love by means of the very love he bears toward us. [63] This person's identify is unknown. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
In his oral teaching John used to point out that the more you love God the more you desire that all people love and honor him and as the desire grows you work harder toward that end, both in prayer and in all other possible works. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
No task is too small to not chase perfection and excellence! ~ Carlo Jose San Juan
San Juan quotes by Carlo Jose San Juan
For the soul that is blind considers falsehood to be falsehood no longer, evil not to be evil, because it puts darkness for light, and light for darkness, and falls into endless disorders. ~ San Juan De La Cruz
San Juan quotes by San Juan De La Cruz
This is Barrachina,' Reyna said.
'What kind of bear?' Hedge opened a jar of maraschino cherries and chugged them down.
'It's a famous restaurant,' Reyna said, 'in the middle of Old San Juan. They invented the piña colada here, back in the 1960s, I think.'
Nico pitched out of his chair, curled up on the floor and started snoring.
Coach Hedge belched. 'Well, it looks like we're staying for a while. If they haven't invented any new drinks since the sixties, they're overdue. I'll get to work! ~ Rick Riordan
San Juan quotes by Rick Riordan
Real life is too sloppy a model for good fiction, Juan Diego had said. ~ John Irving
San Juan quotes by John Irving
In San Francisco, Halloween is redundant. ~ Will Durst
San Juan quotes by Will Durst
And go to San Francisco! It's one of the twelve most interesting cities in the world. California has immense contrasts - the utmost wealth and the most hideous squalor. But there's beauty and interest everywhere. ~ Oliver Sacks
San Juan quotes by Oliver Sacks
Basic SEAL training is six months of long, torturous runs in the soft sand, midnight swims in the cold water off San Diego, obstacles courses, unending calisthenics, days without sleep and always being cold, wet and miserable. ~ William H. McRaven
San Juan quotes by William H. McRaven
The reason I'm in San Diego is not because I want distance from South Africa but because I want proximity to the people I love. But I don't envy growing up in America. As ugly as aspects of it were, my biggest blessing was to be born a South African. ~ Athol Fugard
San Juan quotes by Athol Fugard
The social codes are different, distinctly preppy, fraternity-sorority, hip, flip, fast-and-cute, nauseating, and artificial. I have no doubt that the majority of these people are interesting, likeable, intelligent people. Unfortunately, they've been taught not to show it. The problem lies in socializing. When these people socialize, they don a common "mask." They talk a certain way (hip, flip) act a certain way, do certain things, all of which have been defined as socially acceptable. By acting in such a way, one makes "friends." With time, friends use their masks less and less, and a true, deep friendship results. ~ Juan F. Thompson
San Juan quotes by Juan F. Thompson
I can be sarcastic. ~ Juan Pablo Galavis
San Juan quotes by Juan Pablo Galavis
In any discussion of serial killers, a few notorious names - those of the most prolific killers - always get mentioned. Ted Bundy admitted to killing thirty women, but it could well have been more. Gary Ridgeway, also known as the Green River Killer, was convicted of murdering forty-eight, but later confessed to others. John Wayne Gacy was convicted of killing thirty-three people. Jeffrey Dahmer was convicted of murdering and partially ingesting fifteen people. David Berkowitz, New York City's "Son of Sam," shot and killed six people. Less well known but significant are Dennis Rader, who killed ten people in Wichita, Kansas, and Aileen Wuornos, portrayed by Charlize Theron in the film Monster, who killed six men. Wayne Williams was convicted of killing only two men, but he is believed to have killed anywhere from twenty-three to twenty-nine children in Atlanta. Robert Hansen confessed to four murders but is suspected of more than seventeen. Juan Corona was convicted of murdering twenty-five people. Their crimes are all horrific, and the number of victims is heartbreaking. But all these most notorious serial killers stand in the shadow of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Strangely, Gosnell appears in no list we have found of known U.S. serial killers, though he is the biggest of them all. In reality, Kermit Gosnell deserves the top spot on any list of serial murderers. He's earned it. ~ Ann McElhinney
San Juan quotes by Ann McElhinney
The Don Juan of knowledge: he has yet to be discovered by any philosopher or poet. He is lacking in love for the things he comes to know, but he has intellect, titillation, and pleasure in the hunt and intrigues involved in coming to know--all the way up to the highest and most distant planets of knowledge--until finally nothing remains for him to hunt down other than what is absolutely painful in knowledge, like the drunkard who ends up drinking absinthe and acqua fortis. Thus he ends up lusting for hell--it is the last knowledge that seduces him. Perhaps, like everything he has come to know, it will disillusion him as well! And then he would have to stand still for all of eternity, nailed on the spot to disillusionment, and himself having become the stone guest longing for an evening meal of knowledge that he never again will receive!--For the entire world of things no longer has a single morsel to offer this hungry man. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
San Juan quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
I think I heard it [ Ferris Bueller's Day Off ] earlier. This was being played on a station in San Francisco called Live 105, which was a new wave station. It was one of the first stations to change its format in the early '80s. There was this wave of really strange music coming from Europe like Kraftwork and Freur. ~ Margaret Cho
San Juan quotes by Margaret Cho
In the fall of 1998, I began my freshman year at San Diego State University, which my dad commonly referred to as 'Harvard, without all the smart people. ~ Justin Halpern
San Juan quotes by Justin Halpern
The driver of a racing car is a component. When I first began, I used to grip the steering wheel firmly, and I changed gear so hard that I damaged my hand. ~ Juan Manuel Fangio
San Juan quotes by Juan Manuel Fangio
More people, especially young people, are realising that if they want change, they've got to go about it themselves - they can't depend on a particular person, i.e. me, to do all the work. They are less easy to fool than they used to be, they now know what's going on all over the world. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
San Juan quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Every town has its secrets." He began. "San Felipe is no different. Skeletons are hidden in closets for a reason my friend. And trust me when I tell you, San Felipe has many skeletons. The moral of the story is; don't go snooping into strange closets. You will only find sins and betrayal. Why do you think we drink tequila so much? ~ Carroll Bryant
San Juan quotes by Carroll Bryant
At the suggestion of Professor Itaru Watanabe, and with his help, I left Japan at the age of twenty-three to pursue graduate study at the University of California at San Diego. ~ Susumu Tonegawa
San Juan quotes by Susumu Tonegawa
Manila is a city of extremes. The poor are very poor and the rich very rich. They live side by side. The rich live in sprawling houses in residential subdivisions with fancy names like Green Meadows, White Plains, Corinthian Plaza, Bel Air, San Lorenzo, Magallanes and the very exclusive Forbes Park, a leafy enclave that was home to the famous Manila Polo Club. The poor are not far from sight. They live in little pockets on the periphery of these affluent subdivisions. A constant reminder to the rich that there is another side to life. ~ Arlene J. Chai
San Juan quotes by Arlene J. Chai
In San Francisco, most of the older activists, especially at Berkeley, were very hostile towards punks. The music, certainly, wasn't nice and mellow for them, and neither was our look or our attitude. While in Vancouver, the two most important early punk bands, D.O.A. and the Subhumans, were both managed by former yippie activists, who saw this as a logical extension of what they were already doing. ~ Jello Biafra
San Juan quotes by Jello Biafra
When you plan something, it never works. ~ Juan Pablo Montoya
San Juan quotes by Juan Pablo Montoya
My best friend is he who rights my wrongs or reproaches my mistakes. ~ Jose De San Martin
San Juan quotes by Jose De San Martin
You always go for the ones who don't really want you - she really wanted Adam Moorad, she had just been rejected coldly and subterraneanly by Julien - she was interested in thin ascetic strange intellectuals of San Francisco and Berkeley and not in big paranoiac bums of ships and railroads and novels and all that hatefulness which in myself is to myself so evident and so to others too - though and because ten years younger than I seeing none of my virtues which anyway had long been drowned under years of drugtaking and desiring to die, to give up, to give it all up and forget it all, to die in the dark star - it was I stuck out my hand, not she - ah time. ~ Jack Kerouac
San Juan quotes by Jack Kerouac
No city invites the heart to come to life as San Francisco does. Arrival in San Francisco is an experience in living. ~ William, Saroyan
San Juan quotes by William, Saroyan
The people of my country want the two freedoms that spell security: freedom from want and freedom from fear. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
San Juan quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Peace, development, and justice are all connected to each other. We cannot talk about economic development without talking about peace. How can we expect economic development in a battlefield? ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
San Juan quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Books don't have anything in them about the present, only the past and the future. This is one of the biggest defects of books. Someone should invent a book that tells you what's happening at this moment, as you read. It must be harder to write that sort of book than the futuristic ones that predict the future. That's why they don't exist. And that's why I have to go and investigate reality. ~ Juan Pablo Villalobos
San Juan quotes by Juan Pablo Villalobos
I remember hearing you scream, Cat, and seeing your face. But I don't remember dying. And how can I go on if I'm dead?"
Tat answered fiercely, "Dead is stuffed inside that box, not what you are now. You're my friend. Always will be. No matter what the fuck you eat. I didn't believe that pale prick when he said he could wake you up, but you're here. And don't you dare think about covering yourself back up with dirt. I need you, buddy. It's been hell without you."
"I missed you, amigo," Juan said in almost incoherently accented English. "You can't leave me again! Tat's boring, and Copper only wants to train. You stay!"
Dave stared at us. ~ Jeaniene Frost
San Juan quotes by Jeaniene Frost
San Francisco has just blown us all away. I also understand Angels in America didn't do well there. ~ Chita Rivera
San Juan quotes by Chita Rivera
San Francisco has long been a leader in the arts, nurturing generations of painters, sculptors, poets, novelists, playwrights, film-makers, and performing artists and innovators of every kind. ~ Gavin Newsom
San Juan quotes by Gavin Newsom
--And yet this great wink of eternity,
Of rimless floods, unfettered leewardings,
Samite sheeted and processioned where
Her undinal vast belly moonward bends,
Laughing the wrapt inflections of our love;

Take this Sea, whose diapason knells
On scrolls of silver snowy sentences,
The sceptred terror of whose sessions rends
As her demeanors motion well or ill,
All but the pieties of lovers' hands.

And onward, as bells off San Salvador
Salute the crocus lustres of the stars,
In these poinsettia meadows of her tides,--
Adagios of islands, O my Prodigal,
Complete the dark confessions her veins spell.

Mark how her turning shoulders wind the hours,
And hasten while her penniless rich palms
Pass superscription of bent foam and wave,--
Hasten, while they are true,--sleep, death, desire,
Close round one instant in one floating flower.

Bind us in time, O Seasons clear, and awe.
O minstrel galleons of Carib fire,
Bequeath us to no earthly shore until
Is answered in the vortex of our grave
The seal's wide spindrift gaze toward paradise. ~ Hart Crane
San Juan quotes by Hart Crane
There is no way to escape the doing of our world, so what a warrior does is to turn his world into his hunting ground. As a hunter, a warrior knows that the world is made to be used. So he uses every bit of it. A warrior is like a pirate that has no qualms in taking and using anything he wants, except that a warrior doesn't mind or he doesn't feel insulted when he is used and taken himself ~ Carlos Castaneda
San Juan quotes by Carlos Castaneda
A person is from wherever they feel best, and roots are for plants. Everyone knows that, don't they? ~ Juan Gabriel Vasquez
San Juan quotes by Juan Gabriel Vasquez
She grabbed her briefcase and took a step toward him. "You don't have a last name?"
"Everyone has a last name." His hand hovered in the air, waiting. He was forcing her to cross the marble floor to meet him, and like a Luna moth drawn to a midnight moon, she drifted toward him.
When she reached him, she took his hand and looked up into his face. "Is it Jones? Smith? Or Brown?"
His lips twitched. "None of the above."
"And you won't tell me?"
"It's not necessary information."
She tilted her head, studying his angular features. "You don't look like an Adrian."
His smile broadened. "Imagine that."
"More like a Carlos, or a Juan, or a Diego."
"Those are Hispanic names."
"Aren't you Hispanic?"
"I'm anything you want me to be. ~ Shelby Reed
San Juan quotes by Shelby Reed
I have a problem with the new cooks: you all are more cultured, you cook better ... but you're lazier. ~ Juan Mari Arzak
San Juan quotes by Juan Mari Arzak
Back of my forehead I feel tonight A whole sky full of stars. Under a western moon. Life is indeed lovely! ~ Juan Ramon Jimenez
San Juan quotes by Juan Ramon Jimenez
And off in the far distance, the gold on the wings of the angel atop the bell tower of San Marco flashed in the sun, bathing the entire city in its glistening benediction. ~ Donna Leon
San Juan quotes by Donna Leon
I am prepared to talk with anyone. I have no personal grudge toward anybody. ~ Aung San Suu Kyi
San Juan quotes by Aung San Suu Kyi
Los Angeles County is one of the most park-poor urban areas in the nation, and the San Gabriel Valley - stretching from Pasadena to Pomona - is especially starved for open space. ~ Frances Beinecke
San Juan quotes by Frances Beinecke
One of the things that really worries me, in part about Mexico, in part about Latin America, and in part about the Hispanic population in the U.S. and Canada. It's the lack of awareness of this whole science world. ~ Juan Enriquez
San Juan quotes by Juan Enriquez
I was staying in a hotel in San Francisco for a couple of nights, before flying back to the UK. My hotel was a desperate grey block made from paper and people's screams. At night the sound of strangers having icy sex echoed off the building and poured through the broken air conditioning, like tiny daggers I couldn't see, reminding me of just the tip of what I was missing. ~ Craig Stone
