Harriet, to hide her excitement, had turned to the bookshelves in the corner between the windows and the fireplace. The books, untidily arranged, some standing, some piled on their sides, with newspapers and magazines wedged among them, confused her. There were no sets and a great many were paper-backed. She saw friends - Mr. Dickens was present - and nodding acquaintances - Laurence Sterne, for instance, and Theodore Dreiser - but they were among strangers: Henry Miller, Norman Douglas, Saki, Ronald Firbank, strangers all. ~ Jack Iams
Ronald Firbank quotes by Jack Iams
I remember the average curate at home as something between a eunuch and a snigger. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
Mentally, perhaps she was already three parts glass. So intense was her desire to set up a commemorative window to herself that, when it was erected, she believed she must leave behind in it, for ever, a little ghost. And should this be so, then what joy to be pierced each morning with light; her body flooded through and through by the sun, or in the evening to glow with a harvest of dark colours, deepening into untold sadness with the night....
What ecstasy! It was the Egyptian sighing for his pyramid, of course. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
She made a ravishing corpse. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
Although there were moments even still in the grey glint of morning when the room had the agitated, stricken appearance of a person who had changed his creed a thousand times, sighed, stretched himself, turned a complete somersault, sat up, smiled, lay down, turned up his toes and died of doubts. But this aspect was reserved exclusively for the housemaids and the translucent threads of dawn. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
All millionaires love a baked apple. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
The world is so dreadfully managed, one hardly knows to whom to complain. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
There was a pause - just long enough for an angel to pass, flying slowly. ~ Ronald Firbank
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Firbank
I am an environmentalist ... I am for clean air. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
A friend of mine was asked to a costume ball a short time ago. He slapped some egg on his face and went as a liberal economist. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Johnson's later life, from 1763, is among the best documented of all literary lives. James Boswell gave himself the enormous task, after Johnson's death in 1784, of producing what is now held to be a model of biography; rich in detail and anecdote, a complete picture of the man and his times, traced over a period of more than twenty years. Boswell's Life of Johnson, published in 1791, carries on Johnson's own contribution to the growing art of biography, and consolidates Johnson's position as a major literary figure, who, although a poet and a novelist, is remembered more for his academic and critical achievement than for his creative writings. ~ Ronald Carter
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Carter
It is true that I opposed quotas in employment, education, and other areas. I consider quotas, whether they favor blacks or whites, men or women, to be a new form of discrimination as bad as the old ones. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Chaucer's world in The Canterbury Tales brings together, for the first time, a diversity of characters, social levels, attitudes, and ways of life. The tales themselves make use of a similarly wide range of forms and styles, which show the diversity of cultural influences which the author had at his disposal. Literature, with Chaucer, has taken on a new role: as well as affirming a developing language, it is a mirror of its times - but a mirror which teases as it reveals, which questions while it narrates, and which opens up a range of issues and questions, instead of providing simple, easy answers. ~ Ronald Carter
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Carter
God's Word teaches a very hard, disturbing truth. Those who neglect the poor and the oppressed are really not God's people at all - no matter how frequently they practice their religious rituals nor how orthodox are their creeds and confessions. ~ Ronald J. Sider
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald J. Sider
I have learned that one of the most important rules in politics is poise - which means looking like an owl after you have behaved like a jackass. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Government does not solve problems. It subsidizes them. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Anything you want to do is possible. Believe in yourself, see yourself doing it, walk like your going to do it, talk like your going to do it, and dream the dream of doing it, and it will be so....... Everything starts with a dream and believing in your own abilities. What everyone else says about your dreams is none of your business. Believe in yourself and big things will happen! ~ Ronald Pratt
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Pratt
For all these reasons, one cannot recount the history of modern science without acknowledging the crucial importance of Christianity. But this does not mean that Christianity and Christianity alone produced modern science, ~ Ronald L. Numbers
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald L. Numbers
My name is Draco Malfoy. I'm here to turn myself in. I'm a hardened criminal and I'm sure Ronald Weasley would be only too happy to take my statement."

He presented his wand and the woman took it before handing him a badge that read: Draco Malfoy, Hardened Criminal

"If you'll wait over there, dear, I'll summon Mr. Weasley for you."

Draco shrugged, not much caring one way or another. He could keep breathing and cataloguing his regrets as easily in Azkaban as anywhere else.

Weasley seemed to waffle between being pleased as punch and calculatingly suspicious. "Why are you turning yourself in?"

"My close proximity to the Savior of the Wizarding World infected me with sunshine and happy thoughts. I found my inner Gryffindor and it told me to repent."

"Fuck you, Malfoy. Why are you really here? ~ Dysonrules
Ronald Firbank quotes by Dysonrules
The United States had a long bipartisan tradition of negotiating with even its worst enemies, from John Kennedy
'Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate
to Richard Nixon's opening with China, to Ronald Reagan's famous 'walk in the woods' with MIkhail Gorbachev. Obama's position was firmly in line with longstanding diplomatic practice. George W. Bush's post-9/11 policy
'You are either for us or against us'
was the exception, and a bad one. It removed subtlety from international affairs. ~ Mark Bowden
Ronald Firbank quotes by Mark Bowden
Insufficient oxygen means insufficient biological energy that can result in anything from mild fatigue to life threatening disease. The link between insufficient oxygen and disease has now been firmly established." -Dr. W. Spencer Way, Journal of the American Association of Physicians. ~ Ronald L. Knaus DO
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald L. Knaus DO
The Secret Service is now saying that Hinckley could have been stopped. All it would have taken was for Delahanty and the other Metro Police officers on the rope line to continue facing the crowd as Ronald Reagan departed the Hilton. It is a question that will dog Thomas Delahanty the rest of his life. ~ Bill O'Reilly
Ronald Firbank quotes by Bill O'Reilly
Church and state are, and must remain, separate. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Of the many influences that have shaped the United States into a distinctive nation and people, none may be said to be more fundamental and enduring than the Bible. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
The Founding Fathers are always spinning in their graves over something, as is Ronald Reagan, or FDR. Edward R. Murrow is a perennial grave spinner in the news business (though in fact, Murrow was cremated). ~ Mark Leibovich
Ronald Firbank quotes by Mark Leibovich
When suave politeness, tempering bigot zeal, corrected 'I believe' to 'one does feel'. ~ Ronald Knox
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Knox
I am here to make an announcement that this Thursday, ticket counters and airplanes will fly out of Ronald Reagan Airport. ~ George W. Bush
Ronald Firbank quotes by George W. Bush
Ronald Reagan was a dim hack who did horrible damage to almost everything he touched. ~ Charlie Pierce
Ronald Firbank quotes by Charlie Pierce
I don't think any of us should forget that the security of America is our highest responsibility. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this county of ours and eternal optimism for its future. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
God ... should never have been expelled from America's schools. As we struggle to teach our children ... we dare not forget that our civilization was built by men and women who placed their faith in a loving God. If Congress can begin each day with a moment of prayer ... so then can our sons and daughters. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
A nation without borders is no nation at all. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Future historians will be able to study at the Jimmy Carter Library, the Gerald Ford Library, the Ronald Reagan Library, and the Bill Clinton Adult Bookstore. ~ George Carlin
Ronald Firbank quotes by George Carlin
The resurrection tells us it is never too late. Every so often we will be surprised. We must believe that the stone will be rolled back, and we must be ready to poke out our timid heads, take off the linen bindings of death, and walk free for a time, breathing resurrection air. ~ Ronald Rolheiser
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Rolheiser
I won't hold my opponent's youth and inexperience against him. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Our system freed the individual genius of man. Released him to fly as high & as far as his own talent & energy would take him. We allocate resources not by government. decision but by the millions of decisions customers make when they go into the market. place to buy. If something seems too high-priced we buy something else. Thus resources are steered toward those things the people want most at the price they are willing to pay. It may not be a perfect system but it's better than any other that's ever been tried. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
While contemporary non-Evangelicals have virtually reduced faith to 'courageous ignorance,' Evangelicals have hardly been faithful in defending God's objective communication of truth. ~ Ronald H. Nash
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald H. Nash
Let us remember with devotion that the flag we love and honor is the flag of freedom that flew in victory at Yorktown, the flag the United States Marines raised on Mount Suribachi, the flag Francis Scott Key saw by the dawn's early light. Long may it wave. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Please tell me you're Republicans. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Despite all the efforts of art dealers, the number of Rembrandts existing at a given time is limited; yet such paintings are commonly disposed of by auction. ~ Ronald Coase
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Coase
SHAKESPEARE

What is a man,
If his chief good and market of his time
Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more

(Hamlet)

There is no one kind of Shakespearean hero, although in many ways Hamlet is the epitome of the Renaissance tragic hero, who reaches his perfection only to die. In Shakespeare's early plays, his heroes are mainly historical figures, kings of England, as he traces some of the historical background to the nation's glory. But character and motive are more vital to his work than praise for the dynasty, and Shakespeare's range expands considerably during the 1590s, as he and his company became the stars of London theatre. Although he never went to university, as Marlowe and Kyd had done, Shakespeare had a wider range of reference and allusion, theme and content than any of his contemporaries. His plays, written for performance rather than publication, were not only highly successful as entertainment, they were also at the cutting edge of the debate on a great many of the moral and philosophical issues of the time.

Shakespeare's earliest concern was with kingship and history, with how 'this sceptr'd isle' came to its present glory. As his career progressed, the horizons of the world widened, and his explorations encompassed the geography of the human soul, just as the voyages of such travellers as Richard Hakluyt, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Francis Drake expanded the horizons of the real world. ~ Ronald Carter
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Carter
Stick to your dreams and determine that you're going to make them come true. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Women have their uses for historians. ~ Ronald Syme
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Syme
We want to hear, we long to hear, "I screwed up. I will do my best to ensure that it will not happen again." Most of us are not impressed when a leader offers the form of Kennedy's admission without its essence, as in Ronald Reagan's response to the Iran-Contra scandal, which may be summarized as "I didn't do anything wrong myself, but it happened on my watch, so, well, I guess I'll take responsibility."3 That doesn't cut it. ~ Carol Tavris
Ronald Firbank quotes by Carol Tavris
I've laid down the law, though, to everyone from now on about anything that happens: no matter what time it is, wake me, even if it's in the middle of a Cabinet meeting. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
We will never disarm any American who seeks to protect his or her family from fear and harm. ~ Ronald Reagan
Ronald Firbank quotes by Ronald Reagan
Ike noticed the preacher had pictures of Ronald Reagan and Jesse Helms in his office, with a portrait of Jesus in the middle. Ike said that seemed appropriate since the Bible said Jesus was nailed up between two thieves. The preacher didn't like that much, so Ike quit going to church for awhile. ~ James Aura
