Reviewers are usually people who would have been, poets, historians, biographer, if they could. They have tried their talents at one thing or another and have failed; therefore they turn critic. ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Reviewers quotes by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Under true peer-review ... a panel of reviewers must accept a study before it can be published in a scientific journal. If the reviewers have objections the author must answer them or change the article to take reviewers' objections into account. Under the IPCC review process, the authors are at liberty to ignore criticisms. ~ Richard Lindzen
Reviewers quotes by Richard Lindzen
Middle-earth is ... not my own invention. It is a modernization or alteration ... of an old word for the inhabited world of Men, the oikoumene: middle because thought of vaguely as set amidst the encircling Seas and (in the northern-imagination) between ice of the North and the fire of the South. O. English middan-geard, mediaeval E. midden-erd, middle-erd. Many reviewers seem to assume that Middle-earth is another planet! ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Reviewers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
Nothing would improve newspaper criticism so much as the knowledge that it was to be read by men too hardy to acquiesce in the authoritative statement of the reviewer. ~ Richard Holt Hutton
Reviewers quotes by Richard Holt Hutton
Reviewers claimed that she could see a way through any emotional conflict; more often than not, they mentioned the purity of her heart. But they were wrong. It was the impurity in her heart that made her successful. She was an ordinary woman who'd made extraordinary mistakes. She understood every nuance of need and loss. ~ Kristin Hannah
Reviewers quotes by Kristin Hannah
We don't really need reviewers, just first-night reporters who will tell us faithfully whether or not the audience liked the show. ~ Carroll O'Connor
Reviewers quotes by Carroll O'Connor
You don't want to dwell on your enemies, you know. I basically feel so superior to my critics for the simple reason that they haven't done what I do. Most book reviewers haven't written 11 novels. Many of them haven't written one. ~ John Irving
Reviewers quotes by John Irving
As long as there are readers to be delighted with calumny, there will be found reviewers to calumniate. ~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Reviewers quotes by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
If you read reviews that you think by their very nature are not respectful of the actresses involved or not appreciating the work as it should be, I think you should write to reviewers or comment and say, "Are you kidding me?" ~ Romola Garai
Reviewers quotes by Romola Garai
The thing we call critics are not really reviewers, they are not really critics. They don't have the discipline to write what we would term as critique - it's really just reviewers. They have a common man kind of taste. If you watch them overall, they are not different from the box-office. That's my view. ~ Ang Lee
Reviewers quotes by Ang Lee
Book reviewers are little old ladies of both sexes. ~ John O'Hara
Reviewers quotes by John O'Hara
In the past few years, more and more passionate debates about the nature of SFF and YA have bubbled to the surface. Conversations about race, imperialism, gender, sexuality, romance, bias, originality, feminism and cultural appropriation are getting louder and louder and, consequently, harder to ignore. Similarly, this current tension about negative reviews is just another fissure in the same bedrock: the consequence of built-up pressure beneath. Literary authors feud with each other, and famously; yet genre authors do not, because we fear being cast as turncoats. For decades, literary writers have also worked publicly as literary reviewers; yet SFF and YA authors fear to do the same, lest it be seen as backstabbing when they dislike a book. (Small wonder, then, that so few SFF and YA titles are reviewed by mainstream journals.) Just as a culture of sexual repression leads to feelings of guilt and outbursts of sexual moralising by those most afflicted, so have we, by denying and decrying all criticism that doesn't suit our purposes, turned those selfsame critical impulses towards censorship.

Blog post: Criticism in SFF and YA ~ Foz Meadows
Reviewers quotes by Foz Meadows
I did think reviewers were supposed to be polite about story collections - collections are rather delicate creatures in the literary environment - but not everybody got this memo, I guess. ~ Lorrie Moore
Reviewers quotes by Lorrie Moore
Book reviewer: Very often a writer who has never been published taking out their frustrations on a writer who has. ~ Raul Ramos Y Sanchez
Reviewers quotes by Raul Ramos Y Sanchez
I might also say, regarding reviews and reviewers, that I have yet to read a review of any of my own books which I could not have written much better myself. ~ Edward Abbey
Reviewers quotes by Edward Abbey
I couldn't give a sh*t what they have to say. As soon as I go home and see my husband [James Thornton of Holby Blue fame] and pick up my dog and cuddle him, that's all that matters. I couldn't care if some theatre reviewer thinks my American accent sounds a bit Welsh. ~ Joanna Page
Reviewers quotes by Joanna Page
Honest Book reviews done by skilled reviewers helps Authors a lot to work hard and come up with an optimum out come..... ~ Sanjeev K. Sharma
Reviewers quotes by Sanjeev K. Sharma
I don't think anybody reads a book of poetry front to back. Editors and reviewers only. I don't think anybody else does. ~ Billy Collins
Reviewers quotes by Billy Collins
Q: What literary complexities do you find most interesting? That is, what do you like most to "solve," so to speak, as a novelist?
A: One wishes to create characters who will speak directly to the minds of comparative literature professors and intelligent book reviewers. ~ Gilbert Sorrentino
Reviewers quotes by Gilbert Sorrentino
Something Blue" is now available on Netgalley for reviewers! ~ Dianne Christner
Reviewers quotes by Dianne Christner
What's happening to movie critics is no different from what has been meted out to book, dance, theater, and fine-arts reviewers and reporters in the cultural deforestation that has driven refugees into the diffuse clatter of the Internet and Twitter, where some adapt and thrive - such as Roger Ebert - while others disappear without a twinkle. ~ James Wolcott
Reviewers quotes by James Wolcott
A writer hopes never to offend, but if he must, pray let him offend the gods before the reviewers. ~ Chila Woychik
Reviewers quotes by Chila Woychik
With a poetry book I can send 100 copies out to reviewers and other people, and even do it in advance and get their response. It's difficult with iPad: how do you send it out for free, and how do you even disseminate it before it goes into their store? ~ Felix Dennis
Reviewers quotes by Felix Dennis
Unless a reviewer has the courage to give you unqualified praise, I say ignore the bastard. ~ John Steinbeck
Reviewers quotes by John Steinbeck
The worst reviews, by my mind, are those from individuals who enjoy entertaining themselves by writing something bad about books they actually never read, which is as clear as day from what they're saying. It's even more puzzling for an author to check some of these "honest" reviewers' pages and see that they created their profile with one goal in mind; to post you a bad review, as there's nothing else they wanted to rate. ~ Sahara Sanders
Reviewers quotes by Sahara Sanders
Who shall dispute what the Reviewers say? Their word's sufficient; and to ask a reason, In such a state as theirs, is downright treason. ~ Charles Churchill
Reviewers quotes by Charles Churchill
There is a secret and wholesome conviction in the heart of every man or woman who has written a book that it should be no easy matter for an intelligent reader to lay down that book unfinished. There is a pardonable impression among reviewers that half an hour in its company is sufficient. ~ Agnes Repplier
Reviewers quotes by Agnes Repplier
Only a few short years ago, the average stay-at-home mom spent her relaxation time reading Jackie Collins and staring at the pool boy. Now, half of them are outselling Jackie Collins writing porn about the pool boy.

The other half are writing reviews of them."

[Surviving in the Amazon Jungle – How authors and reviewers can co-exist in a hostile environment (and run to court if they don't), Blog post, March 20, 2014] ~ Pete Morin
Reviewers quotes by Pete Morin
And you are? (Elfa)
One of the reviewers who wrote that you were a piss-poor substitute for Kiara and that the entire system is saddened by the loss of her from the show. I was just telling her that if she doesn't return soon and they leave your clumsy ass in, the show'll be closing prematurely for sure. (Syn)
You're a pig! (Elfa)
Oink, oink. (Syn) ~ Sherrilyn Kenyon
Reviewers quotes by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I never engage negatively with reviewers. If someone says something that enrages me, I do what I do on stage. I make a joke about myself and move on. Sometimes people say things that are manifestly wrong or even apparently malicious. That's fine, too. It's a response. ~ Nick Harkaway
Reviewers quotes by Nick Harkaway
Reviewers are the worst laughers in the world. ~ Chris O'Dowd
Reviewers quotes by Chris O'Dowd
It is usually assumed that children are the natural or the specially appropriate audience for fairy-stories. In describing a fairy-story which they think adults might possibly read for their own entertainment, reviewers frequently indulge in such waggeries as: "this book is for children from the ages of six to sixty." But I have never yet seen the puff of a new motor-model that began thus: "this toy will amuse infants from seventeen to seventy"; though that to my mind would be much more appropriate. Is there any essential connexion between children and fairy-stories? Is there any call for comment, if an adult reads them for himself? Reads them as tales, that is, not studies them as curios. Adults are allowed to collect and study anything, even old theatre programmes or paper bags. ~ J.R.R. Tolkien
Reviewers quotes by J.R.R. Tolkien
There is no debate that social media is a great tool for networking with others in our industry. It can lead to friendships, support, and serendipitous connections with reviewers, agents, reporters, or editors. ~ M.J. Rose
Reviewers quotes by M.J. Rose
Peer reviewers go for orthodoxy ... Many of the great 19th-century discoveries were made by men who had independent wealth-Charles Darwin is the prototype. They trusted themselves. ~ James Black
Reviewers quotes by James Black
We've learned over the years that if we wanted we could write anything that just felt good or sounded good and it didn't necessarily have to have any particular meaning to us. As odd as it seemed to us, reviewers would take it upon themselves to interject their own meanings on our lyrics. Sometimes we sit and read other people's interpretations of our lyrics and think, 'Hey, that's pretty good.' If we liked it, we would keep our mouths shut and just accept the credit as if it was what we meant all along. ~ John Lennon
Reviewers quotes by John Lennon
The reviewer is a singularly detested enemy because he is, unlike the hapless artist, invulnerable. ~ Carroll O'Connor
Reviewers quotes by Carroll O'Connor
I think being a woman and writing frankly about violence has gotten me some attention, and as someone who wants people to read my books, I can't complain about that attention, but it does puzzle me that this is something reviewers focus on. ~ Karin Slaughter
Reviewers quotes by Karin Slaughter
In lots of books I read, the writer seems to go haywire every time he reaches a high point. He'll start leaving out punctuation and running his words together and babble about stars flashing and sinking into a deep dreamless sea. And you can't figure out whether the hero's laying his girl or a cornerstone. I guess that kind of crap is supposed to be pretty deep stuff - a lot of the book reviewers eat it up, I notice. But the way I see it is, the writer is just too goddam lazy to do his job. And I'm not lazy, whatever else I am. I'll tell you everything. ~ Jim Thompson
Reviewers quotes by Jim Thompson
Then I realized that I was falling victim to one of the fallacies of the bad reviewer (whose habits we already discussed at length in yesterday's commentary). I was wishing that Hamid had written a different book than he had. How I might have written this story is completely irrelevant. It would be like dismissing The Godfather because I wished it were a musical. The novel needs to be considered on its own terms. ~ Kevin Guilfoile
Reviewers quotes by Kevin Guilfoile
But in the book," I say, "the mockingbird is supposed to be a symbol of innocence. That's why it's a sin to kill one."
"Who says it's a symbol of innocence?" asks Mort.
"Teachers," I tell him. "Book reviewers, critics --"
"Wikipedia," Elena calls from behind the window display. ~ Paul Acampora
Reviewers quotes by Paul Acampora
Memoirs have at their heart a content that "happened" to someone in real life. Is that what you are itching at in your question, so that if you are a reviewer or you are writing a critique you might feel as if you are stepping on someone's actual face? ~ Lidia Yuknavitch
Reviewers quotes by Lidia Yuknavitch
Let's face it: Sadness and evil are always more believable than happiness and love. When a movie reviewer calls a film "realistic," everyone knows what that means
it means the movie has an unhappy ending. ~ Chuck Klosterman
Reviewers quotes by Chuck Klosterman
In this book industry we have different kinds of birds; excepting one; all having in common that they are ONLY watchers and squawkers at the pond. We have readers, editors, reviewers, interviewers, publishers, marketers, websites, monopolies, and writers. All are better compensated than the writers. Yet the system is totally upside down as those better rewarded are all derivative of what is primary; the writer. Without that person the readers have nothing to read; the editors have nothing to edit; the reviewers have nothing to review; the interviewers have no one to interview; the publishers have nothing to publish; the marketers have nothing to market; the website cannot adware infect 'members,' and the legalized monopolies have nothing to monopolize. So, in effect, this is where the troll steps in. He's kind of a writer; but he's not taking the time to churn out masterpieces. He's just effortlessly telling the vultures exactly what they are. ~ Edward Drobinski
Reviewers quotes by Edward Drobinski
This volume follows in the same format as its predecessors, except that, at the suggestion of two reviewers of a previous volume, Biblical verses are identified, when recognized, for the benefit of our un-Biblical younger generation. ~ George Fenwick Jones
Reviewers quotes by George Fenwick Jones
PROFESSOR EMERITUS WOTAN Ulm, of the University of Oxford East 5, author of the bestselling if controversial memoir Peer Reviewers and Other Idiots: A Life In Academia, had consented to give a recorded lecture on von Neumann replicators to be carried as briefing material on the US Navy twain USS Brian Cowley. ~ Terry Pratchett
Reviewers quotes by Terry Pratchett
Reevaluate your abilities each time when you have been offered to review
an article. And say no thanks if the topic doesn't belong to the field of your expertise. ~ Eraldo Banovac
Reviewers quotes by Eraldo Banovac
Besides, it was all very well to criticise the works of others, but in fact it was quite hard, he discovered, to tell a story. ~ Iain Pears
Reviewers quotes by Iain Pears
Satire is tragedy plus time. You give it enough time, the public, the reviewers will allow you to satirize it. Which is rather ridiculous, when you think about it. ~ Lenny Bruce
Reviewers quotes by Lenny Bruce
It is always dishonest for a reviewer to review the author instead of the author's book. ~ Edward Abbey
Reviewers quotes by Edward Abbey
I have been extremely lucky with reviewers and critics throughout my career. ~ Kate Smith
Reviewers quotes by Kate Smith
No man's thoughts are new, but the style of their expression is the never-failing novelty which cheers and refreshes men. If we were to answer the question, whether the mass of men, as we know them, talk as the standard authors and reviewers write, or rather as this man writes, we should say that he alone begins to write their language at all. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Reviewers quotes by Henry David Thoreau
I don't care what reviewers think. If somebody hates a performance of mine, I kind of get a kick out of it. It amuses me when critics take something so irrelevant as a movie so seriously. ~ Stephen Baldwin
Reviewers quotes by Stephen Baldwin
I would like to spare the time and effort of hack reviewers and, generally, persons who move their lips when reading. ~ Vladimir Nabokov
Reviewers quotes by Vladimir Nabokov
Because, as we know, almost anything can be read into any book if you are determined enough. This will be especially impressed on anyone who has written fantastic fiction. He will find reviewers, both favourable and hostile, reading into his stories all manner of allegorical meanings which he never intended. (Some of the allegories thus imposed on my own books have been so ingenious and interesting that I often wish I had thought of them myself.) ~ C.S. Lewis
Reviewers quotes by C.S. Lewis
As for literary criticism in general: I have long felt that any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel or a play or a poem is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae or a banana split. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Reviewers quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
there seemed to be two kinds of reviewers: some who would look for flaws in the papers, and then pounce to kill them; and others who started from a place of seeking and promoting good ideas. When the "idea protectors" saw flaws, they pointed them out gently, in the spirit of improving the paper - not eviscerating it. ~ Ed Catmull
Reviewers quotes by Ed Catmull
I have no trouble publishing in Soviet astrophysical journals, but my work is unacceptable to the American astrophysical journals.
[Referring to the trouble he had with the peer reviewers of Anglo-American astrophysical journals because his ideas often conflicted with the generally accepted or "standard"" theories.] ~ Hannes Alfven
Reviewers quotes by Hannes Alfven
(on A History of Western Philosophy) I was sometimes accused by reviewers of writing not a true history but a biased account of the events that I arbitrarily chose to write of. But to my mind, a man without a bias cannot write interesting history - if, indeed, such man exists. ~ Bertrand Russell
Reviewers quotes by Bertrand Russell
The reviewers tear me apart. I bleed. I'm a favorite target. They go along for six months looking at movies, praying for rain, and then a new Sandra Dee movie comes out, and their eyes open, and they lick their lips. Before they've ever seen it. ~ Sandra Dee
Reviewers quotes by Sandra Dee
Memoir today is like one big game of misery poker: The more outlandish, outrageous, or just plain out-there the recounted life, the more likely the book is to attract the attention of reviewers, talk-show bookers, and, ultimately, the public. ~ Ben Yagoda
Reviewers quotes by Ben Yagoda
This would be my first time wanting to slaughter a reader, but then again, I can pretend she's one of those cranky ass reviewers that think they are literary gods. ~ Adam Reese
Reviewers quotes by Adam Reese
I naively thought I was making a low-budget movie. But, when the film came out, the Daily Variety reviewer at that time who was named Art Murphy described it as an exploitation film. I had never heard that term before. Roger never used it. So that's how I learned that I had made an exploitation film. ~ Stephanie Rothman
Reviewers quotes by Stephanie Rothman
I've been reading reviews of my stories for twenty-five years, and can't remember a single useful point in any of them, or the slightest good advice. The only reviewer who ever made an impression on me was Skabichevsky, who prophesied that I would die drunk in the bottom of a ditch. ~ Anton Chekhov
Reviewers quotes by Anton Chekhov
In LA I was watching At the Movies with Ebert and Roper, it was, nice to see them differentiate between the subject matter and the art form of making the film, and they both gave it thumbs up, and I was kind of pleased at their honesty as far as reviewers go. ~ Michael Berryman
Reviewers quotes by Michael Berryman
There were also some cruel reviews by women, but the tone of the male reviewers, sometimes hysterical, was different. I have suffered, but I don't want to name names-but there have been men who have seemed to want to destroy me or my writing, men I don't even know. ~ Marguerite Young
Reviewers quotes by Marguerite Young
Let us leave it to the reviewers to abuse such effusions of fancy at their leisure and over every new novel to talk in threadbare strains of the trash with which the press now groans. ~ Jane Austen
Reviewers quotes by Jane Austen
If I know the classical psychological theories well enough to pass my comps and can reformulate them in ways that can impress peer reviewers from the most prestigious journals, but have not the practical wisdom of love, I am only an intrusive muzak soothing the ego while missing the heart.

And if I can read tea leaves, throw the bones and manipulate spirits so as to understand the mysteries of the universe and forecast the future with scientific precision, and if I have achieved a renaissance education in both the exoteric and esoteric sciences that would rival Faust and know the equation to convert the mass of mountains into psychic energy and back again, but have not love, I do not even exist.

If I gain freedom from all my attachments and maintain constant alpha waves in my consciousness, showing perfect equanimity in all situations, ignoring every personal need and compulsively martyring myself for the glory of God, but this is not done freely from love, I have accomplished nothing.

Love is great-hearted and unselfish; love is not emotionally reactive, it does not seek to draw attention to itself. Love does not accuse or compare. It does not seek to serve itself at the expense of others. Love does not take pleasure in other peeople's sufferings, but rejoices when the truth is revealed and meaningful life restored. Love always bears reality as it is, extending mercy to all people in every situation. Love is faithful in all things, is con ~ Stephen Muse
Reviewers quotes by Stephen Muse
I've read a lot of bad books. I used to review books for a living, and when you're a reviewer you read tons of terrible books. ~ John Green
Reviewers quotes by John Green
In my first story, 'Mr. Mysterious & Company' ... I was asked to take out some of the humor because editors were afraid reviewers would dismiss the book as a joke. Today, humor is enjoyed and no longer regarded as literary brummagem. ~ Sid Fleischman
Reviewers quotes by Sid Fleischman
Intrinsic to the concept of a translator's fidelity to the effect and impact of the original is making the second version of the work as close to the first writer's intention as possible. A good translator's devotion to that goal is unwavering. But what never should be forgotten or overlooked is the obvious fact that what we read in a translation is the translator's writing. The inspiration is the original work, certainly, and thoughtful literary translators approach that work with great deference and respect, but the execution of the book in another language is the task of the translator, and that work should be judged and evaluated on its own terms. Still, most reviewers do not acknowledge the fact of translation except in the most perfunctory way, and a significant majority seem incapable of shedding light on the value of the translation or on how it reflects or illuminates the original. ~ Edith Grossman
Reviewers quotes by Edith Grossman
Unlike other people, our reviewers are powerful because they believe in nothing. ~ Harold Clurman
Reviewers quotes by Harold Clurman
Making judgments on films is in many ways so peculiarly vaporous an occupation that the only question is why, beyond the obvious opportunities for a few lectures fees and a little careerism at a dispiritingly self-limiting level, anyone does it in the first place. ~ Joan Didion
Reviewers quotes by Joan Didion
If the book's bad enough, they'll publish it, and if it's bad bad enough, the daily reviewers will love it, and it'll sell. ~ James Purdy
Reviewers quotes by James Purdy
I thought I was attractive when I shot 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding.' Studio executives and movie reviewers let me know I had a confidence in my looks that was not shared by them. ~ Nia Vardalos
Reviewers quotes by Nia Vardalos
At the evident risk of seeming ridiculous, I want to begin by saying that I have tried for much of my life to write as if I was composing my sentences to be read posthumously. I hope this isn't too melodramatic or self-centred a way of saying that I attempt to write as if I did not care what reviewers said, what peers thought, or what prevailing opinions may be. ~ Christopher Hitchens
Reviewers quotes by Christopher Hitchens
The critics and the reviewers are more frightening than anything else! ~ Ayana Mathis
Reviewers quotes by Ayana Mathis
As it turned out, Microsoft wasn't able to get Windows 1.0 ready for shipping until the fall of 1985. Even then, it was a shoddy product. It lacked the elegance of the Macintosh interface, and it had tiled windows rather than the magical clipping of overlapping windows that Bill Atkinson had devised. Reviewers ridiculed it and consumers spurned it. Nevertheless, as is often the case with Microsoft products, persistence eventually made Windows better and then dominant. ~ Walter Isaacson
Reviewers quotes by Walter Isaacson
Lazy reviewers look up other people's reviews and they write the same thing, so you get people writing crap based on crap. ~ Joni Mitchell
Reviewers quotes by Joni Mitchell
Though we run across exceptions, philosophical novels where explanation holds interest, the temptation to explain is one that should almost always be resisted. A good writer can get anything at all across through action and dialogue, and if he can think of no powerful reason to do otherwise, he should probably leave explanation to his reviewers and critics. The writer should especially avoid comment on what his characters are feeling, or at very least should be sure he understands the common objection summed up in the old saw Show, don't tell. ~ John Gardner
Reviewers quotes by John Gardner
I think testing films are a great tool. And I think showing them to people that you value their opinion is important, but once you give over to what reviewers think, that's tricky. You don't know what their agenda is; it's so subjective. You have got to make sure you are asking someone's opinion who you know. ~ Bradley Cooper
Reviewers quotes by Bradley Cooper
Most books reviews aren't very well-written. They tend to be more about the reviewer than the book. ~ Tibor Fischer
Reviewers quotes by Tibor Fischer
A good critic is trying to tell you what she has learned about herself from the reading of a particular piece of literature. A bad reviewer is often trying to tell you how smart he is by declaring whether or not he liked a particular book. If he liked the book, then this is the kind of book a superior person likes, and vice versa. He might try to explain why he didn't like it, but the review is really just a tautology. "I didn't like this book because it is bad," is equivalent to "This book is bad because I didn't like it. ~ Kevin Guilfoile
Reviewers quotes by Kevin Guilfoile
Interview on The Skiffy and Fanty Show 2010. In response to query that young adults may not be open to the nuances/realism in Moorehawke:

'(In fact)young adult readers seem to (be very inclined)to reading the (Moorehawke) books thematically. Some (not all) adult reviewers ... tend to be very plot oriented. Because the books are a slow release of information and very character driven ... (they) don't reward impatient reading ... but young adults seem to be very patient readers. They're very analytical as well. I get very analytical responses from my young adult readers. ~ Celine Kiernan
Reviewers quotes by Celine Kiernan
Eighty percent of the reviewers and authors of reviewed books in the New York Review of Books in 2013 were men, as were almost 80 percent of the 'notable deaths' reported in the New York Times in 2012. ~ Laura Bates
Reviewers quotes by Laura Bates
If reviewers don't mention your work, it's probably better than if they do ~ Roger Deakins
Reviewers quotes by Roger Deakins
Most writers cannot afford focus groups or A/B testing, but they can ask a roommate or colleague or family member to read what they wrote and comment on it. Your reviewers needn't even be a representative sample of your intended audience. Often it's enough that they are not you. This does not mean you should implement every last suggestion they offer. Each commentator has a curse of knowledge of his own, together with hobbyhorses, blind spots, and axes to grind, and the writer cannot pander to all of them. Many academic articles contain bewildering non sequiturs and digressions that the authors stuck in at the insistence of an anonymous reviewer who had the power to reject it from the journal if they didn't comply. Good prose is never written by a committee. A writer should revise in response to a comment when it comes from more than one reader or when it makes sense to the writer herself. ~ Steven Pinker
Reviewers quotes by Steven Pinker
[P]ersonally, I know I'd prefer to read an honest review by someone who has no reason to lie, than a book reviewer who has an employer and a publishing house to keep happy. ~ Catherine Ryan Howard
Reviewers quotes by Catherine Ryan Howard
The unflattering reviews are painful for short periods of time; the badly written ones are deeply, deeply insulting. That reviewer took no time to really read the book. ~ Toni Morrison
Reviewers quotes by Toni Morrison
The preface is the most important part of a book. Even reviewers read a preface. ~ Philip Guedalla
Reviewers quotes by Philip Guedalla
An author's great day is releasing your book into the world like a butterfly and having a reviewer come upon it and say…oh, that's lovely! ~ Nanette L. Avery
Reviewers quotes by Nanette L. Avery
I don't really say much about reviewers. It's a very tough job to get all of the depth of a movie all at once. ~ Roland Joffe
Reviewers quotes by Roland Joffe
You may think novelists always have fixed plans to which they work, so that the future predicted by Chapter One is always inexorably the actuality of Chapter Thirteen. But novelists write for countless different reasons: for money, for fame, for reviewers, for parents, for friends, for loved ones; for vanity, for pride, for curiosity, for amusement: as skilled furniture makers enjoy making furniture, as drunkards like drinking, as judges like judging, as Sicilians like emptying a shotgun into an enemy's back. I could fill a book with reasons, and they would all be true, though not true of all. Only one same reason is shared by all of us: we wish to create worlds as real as, but other than the world that is. Or was. This is why we cannot plan. We know a world is an organism, not a machine. ~ John Fowles
Reviewers quotes by John Fowles
Richard Price got a million dollar advance on one fake film book based on a paragraph outline and is able to seduce gullible White reviewers who know less about ghetto life than he. The New York Times has devoted more space to Price's tourist, ghetto writing than to any Black writer in history. ~ Ishmael Reed
Reviewers quotes by Ishmael Reed
Now, practically all reviewers have academic aspirations. The people from the universities are used to a captive audience, but the literary journalist has to please his audience. ~ V.S. Pritchett
Reviewers quotes by V.S. Pritchett
I urge you strongly not to give Stop the Goodreads Bullies traffic. Their initial postings were all doxings of reviewers ... There are a lot of arguments on the legitimacy of doxing, but I think most reasonable people would agree that the response to a negative - not even libelous - review should not be the open posting of a reviewer's address. That's not the counter of speech by more speech, but with an implicit threat. It's not that you're wrong, and here's why; it's that I know where you live. ~ G.R. Reader
Reviewers quotes by G.R. Reader
Reviewers do not read books with much care ... their profession is more given to stupidity and malice and literary ignorance even than the profession of novelist. ~ Anthony Burgess
Reviewers quotes by Anthony Burgess
I don't read the reviews because they're too horrible and the reviewers have not been big supporters of mine over the years, probably because I make these big populist movies and they hate it. ~ Rob Cohen
Reviewers quotes by Rob Cohen
Adieu, sucky speed-reading critics and reviewers!"
Terry Dare, gothic author in Blatty's book "Elsewhere", just before he crosses over. ~ William Peter Blatty
Reviewers quotes by William Peter Blatty
Writers take words seriously - perhaps the last professional class that does - and they struggle to steer their own through the crosswinds of meddling editors and careless typesetters and obtuse and malevolent reviewers into the lap of the ideal reader. ~ John Updike
Reviewers quotes by John Updike
Before she married my father, my mother was a film reviewer for The Akron Beacon Journal - a small newspaper. ~ Jim Jarmusch
