... the doctrinal differences between Hinduism and Buddhism and Taoism are not anywhere near as important as doctrinal differences among Christianity and Islam and Judaism. Holy wars are not fought over them because verbalized statements about reality are never presumed to be reality itself. ~ Robert M. Pirsig
Religion War quotes by Robert M. Pirsig
As a grandiose self-deception, war is o' the same magnitude as religion. We embrace war or religion - usually both at the same time - as a means o' defeatin' death, but neither o' them do a blinkin' thing but sanction dyin'. Throughout history, Death's best friend has been a priest with a knife. ~ Tom Robbins
Religion War quotes by Tom Robbins
Humans will market anything to make a fucking profit. Religion, war, love, hate, sex, violence, pain, humor, emotion... all for fucking paper. We are pathetic beings. ~ James Wheeler
Religion War quotes by James Wheeler
Hanging around the small minded eventually makes us small minded. The plant only grows as big as the environment it's in. ~ Torron-Lee Dewar
Religion War quotes by Torron-Lee Dewar
If my God damns people for love but saves them for brutle warfare, then that is not the God I know or wish to worship. ~ Cristina Marrero
Religion War quotes by Cristina Marrero
If religions are diseases of the human psyche, as the philosopher Grintholde asserts, then religious wars must be reckoned the resultant sores and cankers infecting the aggregate corpus of the human race. Of all wars, these are the most detestable, since they are waged for no tangible gain, but only to impose a set of arbitrary credos upon another's mind. ~ Jack Vance
Religion War quotes by Jack Vance
Gambling is not as destructive as war or as boring as pornography. It is not as immoral as business or as suicidal as watching television. And the percentages are better than religion. ~ Mario Puzo
Religion War quotes by Mario Puzo
Grant Allen once said that an Englishman's idea of God was another Englishman twelve feet high, and I suppose that is more or less everybody's idea of God- with the necessary geographical adjustment. Zenith Brown has an idea about God that pleases me. 'God,' says Mrs. Brown, 'is obviously a friendly enough Old Gentleman most of the time, Who wishes us well and tries to see to it that we are reasonably happy. It is equally obvious the He has an idiot brother who takes over the reins whenever God Himself goes fishing. It is when the idiot brother is in charge of things that the world goes wrong and we have wars, famines, and pestilences on earth. ~ Vincent Starrett
Religion War quotes by Vincent Starrett
The third of the biblical Ten Commandments instructs humans never to make wrongful use of the name of God. People tend to understand this in a childish way, as a prohibition on uttering the explicit name of God (as in the famous Monty Python sketch 'If you say Jehovah...'). Perhaps the deeper meaning of this commandment is that we should never use the name of God to justify our political interests, our economic ambitions, or our personal hatreds. As a resident of the Middle East I am keenly aware how often people break this commandment. The world would be a much better place if we followed it more devotedly. You want to wage war on your neighbours and steal their land? Leave God out of it, and find yourself some other excuse. ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Religion War quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
Religion isn't the cause of wars, it's the excuse. ~ Jasper Fforde
Religion War quotes by Jasper Fforde
I realize that what happened in Bosnia could happen anywhere in the world, particularly in places that are diverse and have a history of conflict. It only takes bad leadership for a country to go up in flames, for people of different ethnicity, color, or religion to kill each other as if they had nothing in common whatsoever. Having a democratic constitution, laws that secure human rights, police that maintain order, a judicial system, and freedom of speech don't ultimately guarantee long lasting peace. If greedy or bloodthirsty leaders come to power, it can all go down. It happened to us. It can happen to you. ~ Savo Heleta
Religion War quotes by Savo Heleta
Nowhere in this universe does evil exist except in the mind of mankind. only man can take an idea or symbol which is so simple and innocent, and then twist it and corrupt it until it is something to hate or kill one another over. ~ Andrew James Pritchard
Religion War quotes by Andrew James Pritchard
Religions are different roads converging to the same point. What does it matter that we take different road, so long as we reach the same goal. Wherein is the cause for quarreling? ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Religion War quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
Do you think it's possible for an entire nation to be insane? ~ Terry Pratchett
Religion War quotes by Terry Pratchett
I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty. ~ Adolf Hitler
Religion War quotes by Adolf Hitler
Jihad is described as a war against Muslims, to establish the religion. ~ Mark Durie
Religion War quotes by Mark Durie
In seven days God had created the Earth. In a single day mankind had turned it upside down. ~ Kristina McMorris
Religion War quotes by Kristina McMorris
Godless, 'we had no war.'
Until God set us to fight each other, for the rest of human history. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Religion War quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
New Rule: Just because a country elects a smart president doesn't make it a smart country. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked on CNN if I thought Sarah Palin could get elected president, and I said I hope not, but I wouldn't put anything past this stupid country. Well, the station was flooded with emails, and the twits hit the fan. And you could tell that these people were really mad, because they wrote entirely in CAPITAL LETTERS!!! Worst of all, Bill O'Reilly refuted my contention that this is a stupid country by calling me a pinhead, which (a) proves my point, and (b) is really funny coming from a doody-face like him.

Now, before I go about demonstration how, sadly, easy it is to prove the dumbness that's dragging us down, let me just say that ignorance has life-and-death consequences. On the eve of the Iraq War, seventy percent of Americans thought Saddam Hussein was personally involved in 9/11. Six years later, thirty-four percent still do. Or look at the health-care debate: At a recent town hall meeting in South Carolina, a man stood up and told his congressman to "keep your government hands off my Medicare," which is kind of like driving cross-country to protest highways.

This country is like a college chick after two Long Island iced teas: We can be talked into anything, like wars, and we can be talked out of anything, like health care. We should forget the town halls, and replace them with study halls.

Listen to some of these stats: ~ Bill Maher
Religion War quotes by Bill Maher
I've fought for and against pretty much every cause there is. There will always be war of some kind. At first it was over fertile soil and good water, then precious metal and then the most popular version of human disagreement, 'My God is better than your God.' Whether you draw your faith from Jeremiah and Jesus, Allah and Muhammad or Brahma and Buddha, it doesn't matter. Someone will tell you you're wrong, and he'll fight you over it. Me, I believe in aliens, and to hell with all earthly gods. In the grand scheme of a trillion planets in the universe we're just not that damn important anyway. And humans are rotten to the core. ~ David Baldacci
Religion War quotes by David Baldacci
Some people have a heart to do evil and they don't care if you're Muslim or Christian. ~ Tucker Elliot
Religion War quotes by Tucker Elliot
I pray that you must have peace within yourself.

Have you seen yourself lately. You are always angry
& busy fighting. You are fighting everything & fighting everyone.
First you had valid good reasons why you should be fighting.
Now you have excuses why you are fighting.

I pray that you have peace within yourself.

Its foreigners your fighting. After winning.
It's racism war your fighting. After winning.
It tribalism your fighting. After winning.
Its culture vs religion war your fighting. After winning.
Its gender war ,boys verses girls your fighting. After winning .
Its girls against other girls (feminine war) & boys against other
boys (muscular war) your fighting. After winning .
Its your thoughts against your heart war your fighting. After winning .
Its your feelings against spirituality war your fighting. After winning.
its something else your fighting................

Money you have. Status you have. Job and friends you have.
Pride and ego you have, but I pray you have peace.
and I pray that you have inner peace.
Some battles you fight them but the real war is within yourself. ~ De Philosopher DJ Kyos
Religion War quotes by De Philosopher DJ Kyos
Christianity persecuted, tortured, and burned. Like a hound it tracked the very scent of heresy. It kindled wars, and nursed furious hatreds and ambitions. It sanctified, quite like Mohammedism, extermination and tyranny. All this would have been impossible if, like Buddhism, it had looked only for peace and the liberation of souls. It looked beyond; it dreamt of infinite blisses and crowns it should be crowned with before an electrified universe and an applauding God ... Buddhism had tried to quiet a sick world with anesthetics; Christianity sought to purge it with fire. ~ George Santayana
Religion War quotes by George Santayana
The word religion has such bad connotations for me, that it's been responsible for wars, and it shouldn't be that way at all, it's just the way the meaning of the word has evolved to me. I have to wonder what we did on this planet before religion. ~ Eddie Vedder
Religion War quotes by Eddie Vedder
Matthew White, a self-described atrocitologist who keeps a database with the estimated death tolls of history's major wars, massacres, and genocides, counts about 1.2 million deaths from mass killing that are specifically enumerated in the Bible. (He excludes the half million casualties in the war between Judah and Israel described in 2 Chronicles 13 because he considers ~ Steven Pinker
Religion War quotes by Steven Pinker
That's what you get,' he said, nodding towards a group of the men engaged in some close-order military drill, 'when you give people Bibles and guns. You should give 'em either one or the other, but not both. It just messes up their brains. ~ K.W. Jeter
Religion War quotes by K.W. Jeter
I should say that there ought to be no war except religious war. If war is irreligious, it is immoral. No man ought ever to fight at all unless he is prepared to put his quarrel before that invisible Court of Arbitration with which all religion is concerned. Unless he thinks he is vitally, eternally, cosmically in the right, he is wrong to fire off a pocket-pistol. ~ G.K. Chesterton
Religion War quotes by G.K. Chesterton
Putin stands for the opposite of a universal ideology; he has become an arch-nationalist of a pre-Cold War type, making mystic appeals to motherland and religion. ~ George Packer
Religion War quotes by George Packer
Our problems come not from what we believe, but from how we believe in what we do. ~ Craig Stone
Religion War quotes by Craig Stone
Literature is as old as human language, and as new as tomorrow's sunrise. And literature is everywhere, not only in books, but in videos, television, radio, CDs, computers, newspapers, in all the media of communication where a story is told or an image created.

It starts with words, and with speech. The first literature in any culture is oral. The classical Greek epics of Homer, the Asian narratives of Gilgamesh and the Bhagavad Gita, the earliest versions of the Bible and the Koran were all communicated orally, and passed on from generation to generation - with variations, additions, omissions and embellishments until they were set down in written form, in versions which have come down to us. In English, the first signs of oral literature tend to have three kinds of subject matter - religion, war, and the trials of daily life - all of which continue as themes of a great deal of writing. ~ Ronald Carter
Religion War quotes by Ronald Carter
Perhaps religion provides the justification for wars, but science provides the weapons. ~ James Rozoff
Religion War quotes by James Rozoff
Most world religions denounced war as a barbaric waste of human life. We treasured the teachings of these religions so dearly that we frequently had to wage war in order to impose them on other people. ~ Jon Stewart
Religion War quotes by Jon Stewart
Drugs, sex, Satan, and power, Eve mused. A religious war? Hadn't humans fought and died for beliefs since the dawn of time? Animals fought for territory; people fought for territory as well. And for gain, for passion, for beliefs. For the hell of it. ~ J.D. Robb
Religion War quotes by J.D. Robb
Perhaps these Ten Commandments cases will be the turning point in the legal war against religion. ~ Cliff Stearns
Religion War quotes by Cliff Stearns
The three main extra-rational activities in modern life are religion, war, and love. all these are extra-rational, but love is not anti-rational, that is to say, a reasonable man may reasonably rejoice in its existence ~ Bertrand Russell
Religion War quotes by Bertrand Russell
It's not a religion, it's a relationship!'
Without the religion, without the archaic and flawed holy texts, there wouldn't be anything for you to manufacture a 'relationship' with. Without the wars and forced conversions key to the religion's spread across the globe, it may have died out long ago like so many others have. If that were the case, you wouldn't know the characters of Jesus or God or Muhammad or any of the tales and myths associated with a particular faith. Religions concern themselves with preserving and worshiping these myths as realities, without regard to substantial evidence to the contrary. ~ David G. McAfee
Religion War quotes by David G. McAfee
I have watched a lot of films... about war... but still I can't understand what's the purpose of war???
Killing inocent people??
About religion... so my god says that killing other people isn't acceptable... but your is acceptable???
WTF ~ Deyth Banger
Religion War quotes by Deyth Banger
But I won't watch them go to war again. I've been to war, you know, to save civilization from the reptile hordes. I bled for it, I saw friends and other men die for it. And then I watched men like you piss it away again, the civilization we'd saved, in squabbles over a few hundred square miles of territory and what language the people get to speak there, what color their skin and hair is and what kind of religious horseshit they get crammed down their throats. ~ Richard K. Morgan
Religion War quotes by Richard K. Morgan
Religion is a belief or a curriculum. It can't hurt people or start wars. People hurt people, and people start wars. The real problem is the narcissist, for he can't control his anger and believes no one else is entitled to their own opinion or beliefs . ~ Mamie Thornbrue
Religion War quotes by Mamie Thornbrue
At the quantum level our universe can be seen as an indeterminate place, predictable in a statistical way only when you employ large enough numbers. Between that universe and a relatively predictable one where the passage of a single planet can be timed to a picosecond, other forces come into play. For the in-between universe where we find our daily lives, that which you believe is a dominant force. Your beliefs order the unfolding of daily events. If enough of us believe, a new thing can be made to exist. Belief structure creates a filter through which chaos is sifted into order. ~ Frank Herbert
Religion War quotes by Frank Herbert
A prince is also esteemed when he shows himself a true friend or a true enemy, that is, when, without reservation, he takes his stand with one side or the other. This is always wiser than trying to be neutral, for if two powerful neighbors of yours fall out they are either of such sort that the victor may give you reason to fear him or they are not. In either case it will be better for you to take sides and wage an honest war. ~ Niccolo Machiavelli
Religion War quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
God has been pleased to save us during the years of war that have already passed. We pray that He may be pleased to save us to the end. But we must do our part. ~ Eamon De Valera
Religion War quotes by Eamon De Valera
When a war is won, it's the losers, not the winners, who are liberated. ~ Romain Gary
Religion War quotes by Romain Gary
It took me years, but letting go of religion has been the most profound wake up of my life. I feel I now look at the world not as a child, but as an adult. I see what's bad and it's really bad. But I also see what is beautiful, what is wonderful. And I feel so deeply appreciative that I am alive. How dare the religious use the term 'born again.' That truly describes freethinkers who've thrown off the shackles of religion so much better! ~ Julia Sweeney
Religion War quotes by Julia Sweeney
In order to have faith, or follow any other organized religion, I'd have to suspend a degree of disbelief. ~ Pete Townshend
Religion War quotes by Pete Townshend
Ultimate peace begins within; when we find peace within there will be no more conflict, nor more occasion for war. ~ Peace Pilgrim
Religion War quotes by Peace Pilgrim
But even more important," he said, "is the way complex systems seem to strike a balance between the need for order and the imperative to change. Complex systems tend to locate themselves at a place we call 'the edge of chaos.' We imagine the edge of chaos as a place where there is enough innovation to keep a living system vibrant, and enough stability to keep it from collapsing into anarchy. It is a zone of conflict and upheaval, where the old and the new are constantly at war. Finding the balance point must be a delicate matter - if a living system drifts too close, it risks falling over into incoherence and dissolution; but if the system moves too far away from the edge, it becomes rigid, frozen, totalitarian. Both conditions lead to extinction. Too much change is as destructive as too little. Only at the edge of chaos can complex systems flourish." He paused. "And, by implication, extinction is the inevitable result of one or the other strategy - too much change, or too little. ~ Michael Crichton
Religion War quotes by Michael Crichton
No one can guarantee success in war, but only deserve it. ~ Winston Churchill
Religion War quotes by Winston Churchill
The bones of the story of 'War Horse' is a love story. That's what makes it universal. ~ Steven Spielberg
Religion War quotes by Steven Spielberg
Cut me off from the Church? They can't do that! I repent do damn fast! ~ J. Golden Kimball
Religion War quotes by J. Golden Kimball
Since I'm allergic to various things, the army wouldn't accept me during the war, and I got into the Office of War Information, which sent music to Europe. ~ Elliott Carter
Religion War quotes by Elliott Carter
Poor human nature, what horrible crimes have been committed in thy name! Every fool, from king to policeman, from the flatheaded parson to the visionless dabbler in science, presumes to speak authoritatively of human nature. The greater the mental charlatan, the more definite his insistence on the wickedness and weaknesses of human nature. Yet, how can any one speak of it today, with every soul in a prison, with every heart fettered, wounded, and maimed? ~ Emma Goldman
Religion War quotes by Emma Goldman
I've made peace with myself.
Good for you. That's the hardest war of all to win.
Didn't say I won. Just stopped fighting. ~ Joe Abercrombie
Religion War quotes by Joe Abercrombie
Christianity cannot erase man's need for pleasure, nor can it eradicate the various sources of pleasure. What it can do, however, and what it has been extremely effective in accomplishing, is to inculcate guilt in connection with pleasure. The pursuit of pleasure, when accompanied by guilt, becomes a means of perpetuating chronic guilt, and this serves to reinforce one's dependence on God. ~ George H. Smith
Religion War quotes by George H. Smith
Religion really means to rejoin that which seems to be separate. ~ Charlotte Joko Beck
Religion War quotes by Charlotte Joko Beck
I'm not sure if that answers the question and I have absolutely no problem with any major world religion on Earth. ~ John Hodgman
Religion War quotes by John Hodgman
They say that the devil speaks in many tongues, and it is true, for here on Earth we speak in many different tongues.
We tell many lies.
We feed on the children and the souls of man as if it was nothing of consequence.
It was the devil who transformed heaven into hell.
And that devil is us! ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Religion War quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
I'm a scientist. We don't talk about the spirit. Soul is a four letter word in our tradition. ~ Candace Pert
Religion War quotes by Candace Pert
In a flash of self-comprehension, Roger Brevard knew that he would never, as he had hped, leave Salem. He was abstemious man, one of a family of long lives, and he would linger here, increasingly unimportant, for a great while, an old man in new epochs, isolated among strange people and prejudices. Whatever the cause - the small safety or an inward flaw - he had never been part of the corporate sweating humanity where, in the war of spirit and flesh, the vital rewards and accomplishments were found. ~ Joseph Hergesheimer
Religion War quotes by Joseph Hergesheimer
Most religion-mongers have bated their paradises with a bit of toasted cheese. They have tempted the body with large promises of possessions in their transmortal El Dorado. Sancho Panza will not quit his chimney-corner, but under promise of imaginary islands to govern. ~ James Russell Lowell
Religion War quotes by James Russell Lowell
The enduring attraction of war is this: Even with its destruction and carnage it can give us what we long for in life. It can give us purpose, meaning, a reason for living. ~ Chris Hedges
Religion War quotes by Chris Hedges
Before the war on drugs, the war on terror, or the war on cancer, there was the war on female sexual desire. It's a war that has been raging far longer than any other, and its victims number well into the billions by now. Like the others, it's a war that can never be won, as the declared enemy is a force of nature. We may as well declare war on the cycles of the moon. ~ Christopher Ryan
Religion War quotes by Christopher Ryan
This was a war of attrition...A mug's game! A mug's game as far as killing men was concerned, but not an uninteresting occupation if you considered it as a struggle of various minds spread all over the broad landscape in the sunlight. They did not kill many men and they expended an infinite number of missiles and a vast amount of thought. If you took six million men armed with loaded canes and stockings containing bricks or knives and set them against another six million men similarly armed, at the end of three hours four million on the one side and the entire six million on the other would be dead. So, as far as killing went, it really was a mug's game. That was what happened if you let yourself get into the hands of the applied scientist. For all these things were the products not of the soldier but of hirsute bespectacled creatures who peer through magnifying glasses. Or of course, on our side, they would be shaven-cheeked and less abstracted. They were efficient as slaughterers in that they enabled the millions of men to be moved. When you had only knives you could not move very fast. On the other hand, your knife killed at every stroke: you would set a million men firing at each other with rifles from eighteen hundred yards. But few rifles ever registered a hit. So the invention was relatively inefficient. And it dragged things out!
And suddenly it had become boring. ~ Ford Madox Ford
Religion War quotes by Ford Madox Ford
We must enlist our own snake and strike like a cobra against their vitals with an attack on Washington. ~ Robert E.Lee
Religion War quotes by Robert E.Lee
John Howard's credibility on the entire Iraq war has been torpedoed by John Howard's own intelligence agency. ~ Kevin Rudd
Religion War quotes by Kevin Rudd
They said, This might look like a war between men and women, but what this really is is the last siege of a ruling class. See Brett up there making that little bitch-baby face? See that? That's the face a baby makes when you try to take his rattle way. We've had many, many babies so we're familiar. America being the rattle in this analogy. He thinks he deserves to do whatever he wants with that rattle, and women are simply a subclause in that arrangement ~ Zadie Smith
Religion War quotes by Zadie Smith
Too much doubt is better than too much credulity. ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
Religion War quotes by Robert Green Ingersoll
This is a profligate prison for us all, it's a hellish hole we soldiers have been hauled to because they blame us for losing the war in America. ~ Timberlake Wertenbaker
Religion War quotes by Timberlake Wertenbaker
I WILL FOLLOW ANYONE
AND THANK EVERYONE
WHO TRIES TO MAKE
A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES
OF VULNERABLE CIVILIANS ~ Widad Akreyi
Religion War quotes by Widad Akreyi
A quick quiz. What do the following events have in common? The war in Iraq. The Exxon Valdez oil spill. The rise in America's prison population. The answer: They all contribute to our nation's gross national product, or what's now referred to as gross domestic product, or GDP, and therefore all are considered "good," at least in the dismal eyes of economists. ~ Eric Weiner
Religion War quotes by Eric Weiner
My husband's career had allowed me to witness the machinations of politics and power up close. I'd seen how just a handful of votes in every precinct could mean the difference not just between one candidate and another but between one value system and the next. If a few people stayed home in each neighborhood, it could determine what out kids learned in schools, which health-care options we had available, or whether or not we sent our troops to war. Voting was both simple and incredibly effective. ~ Michelle Obama
Religion War quotes by Michelle Obama
Inevitably, this is how Christianity has come to be understood by a great many good people who have no better instruction in it than they receive from ranters and politicians. Under such circumstances, it is only to their credit that they reject it. Though I am not competent to judge in such matters, it would not surprise me at all to learn in any ultimate reckoning that these "Nones" as they are called, for the box they check when asked their religion, are better Christians than the Christians. But they have not been given the chance even to reject the beautiful, generous heritage that might otherwise have come to them. The learned and uncantankerous traditions seem, as I have said, to have fallen silent, to have retreated within their walls to dabble in feckless innovation and to watch their numbers dwindle. ~ Marilynne Robinson
Religion War quotes by Marilynne Robinson
The article I actually write is a masterpiece. It takes talent to convince people that war is a beautiful experience. Come one, come all to exotic Viet Nam, the jewel of Southeast Asia, meet interesting, stimulating people of an ancient culture...and kill them. Be the first kid on your block to get a confirmed kill. ~ Gustav Hasford
Religion War quotes by Gustav Hasford
Being a soldier [in the wars of modern power politics] was like being on a team in a sport that drew no crowds, except for the players' own parents and friends. ~ Dan Wakefield
Religion War quotes by Dan Wakefield
God is that inner presence which makes us admire the beautiful and consoles us for not sharing the happiness of the wicked. ~ Eugene Delacroix
Religion War quotes by Eugene Delacroix
To Muslims, I repeat that Islam is a great and noble religion but that all Muslims and Muslim majority societies did not in the past and do not now live up to this nobleness: critical reflection is required about faithfulness to our principles, our outlook on others, on cultures, freedom, the situation of women, and so on. Our contradictions and ambiguities are countless. To Westerners, I similarly repeat that the undeniable achievements of freedom and democracy should not make us forget murderous "civilizing missions," colonization, the destructive economic order, racism, discrimination, acquiescent relations with the worst dictatorships, and other failings. Our contradictions and ambiguities are countless. I am equally demanding and rigorous with both universes. ~ Tariq Ramadan
