Magnus's head was tipped back, his shimmering white suit rumpled like bedsheets in the morning, his white cloak swaying after him like a moonbeam. His mirrorlike mask was askew, his black hair wild, his slim body arching with the dance, and wrapped around his fingers like ten shimmering rings was the light of his magic, casting a spotlight on one dancer, then another.
The faerie Hyacinth caught one radiant stream of magic and whirled, holding on to it as if the light were a ribbon on a maypole. The vampire woman in the violet cheongsam, Lily, was dancing with another vampire who Alec presumed was Elliott, given the blue and green stains around his mouth and all down his shirtfront. Malcolm Fade joined in the dance with Hyacinth, though he appeared to be doing a jig and she seemed very puzzled. The blue warlock who Magnus had called Catarina was waltzing with a tall horned faerie. The dark-skinned faerie whom Magnus had addressed as a prince was surrounded by others whom Alec presumed were courtiers, dancing in a circle around him.
Magnus laughed as he saw Hyacinth using his magic like a ribbon, and sent shimmering streamers of blue light in several directions. Catarina batted away Magnus's magic, her own hand glowing faintly white. The two vampires Lily and Elliott both let a magic ribbon wrap around one of their wrists. They did not seem like trusting types, but they instantly leaned into Magnus with perfect faith, Lily pretending to be a captive and Elliott shimmyi ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
Americans would have a right to go to war with the Iraqis if we could name one author from Iraq. It disturbs me that we're going to war with somebody we know absolutely nothing about. Name one Iraqi poet, one Iraqi woman activist, one Iraqi singer. Name one Iraqi novelist. You can't. And how can you go kill someone you don't know anything about? ~ Jimmy Santiago Baca

Raphel Santiago quotes by Santiago Durango
You trashed the law. But we understand. You're permitted. You have a greater responsibility than we can possibly fathom. You provide us with a blanket of freedom. We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns, and nothing's gonna stand in your way of doing it. Not Willy Santiago, not Dawson and Downey, not a thousand armies, not the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and not the Constitution of the United States. That's the truth, isn't it Colonel? I can handle it. ~ Aaron Sorkin
Raphel Santiago quotes by Aaron Sorkin

He had never felt entirely comfortable around Raphael. Raphael seemed to him like Loki or some other trickster God, sometimes working for good and sometimes for evil, but always in his own interests. ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
Palo's three older brothers had died in the Paraguayan War, conscripted by the Argentinian government, taken off by force along with all the black men of their generation, because, Palo told young Santiago, they needed a way to not only win their war but also rid this country of us in the process, two birds with one stone. Buenos Aires was too black for them, one third of the population, that's enough blackness to swallow you up! to get strong on you! and so they sent our fathers off to war and opened floodgates to European steamships so that white men would pour into the city to replace us, and their plan worked, the bastarda, look at our city now. ~ Carolina De Robertis
Raphel Santiago quotes by Carolina De Robertis
Not everything is a love story. ~ Ale Meza-Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Ale Meza-Santiago
I have no soul," [Raphael] said. "But I made you a promise on my mother's doorstep, and she was sacred to me. ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
People say what distinguishes us from the animals is that we think. Well, then why the hell don't we extend some compassion to those under tremendous duress? There's this whole idea that you work really hard so you can deaden your soul to the universe and enjoy yourself only in ways the Sierra Club will let you. But what about enjoying yourself by getting into the whole melee of poverty and racism and violence and murder and drug addiction? Get in there, roll up your sleeves, and do something! Nobody does it. ~ Jimmy Santiago Baca
Raphel Santiago quotes by Jimmy Santiago Baca
I'm not technical. When I listen to music, I gravitate more toward the sonic aspect of it. The technical stuff of it, I get bored with it. These long solos? OK, already. You know your scales, big deal. I know it, too, but I don't want to do that. ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
I used to think all drunks were idiots, but I don't anymore; I've changed my mind about idiots. ~ Santiago Leganes Gomez
Raphel Santiago quotes by Santiago Leganes Gomez

Dare beyond your strength, hazard beyond your judgment, and in extremities, proceed in excellent hope. Bare the accidents of life with dignity and grace, making the best of circumstances. ~ Miriam Defensor Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Miriam Defensor Santiago

Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
We came to Macun when I was four, to a rectangle of rippled metal sheets on stilts hovering in the middle of a circle of red dirt. ~ Esmeralda Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Esmeralda Santiago

Raphel Santiago quotes by Ruben Santiago-Hudson
Even here in America, people are fighting for civil rights 45 years after the civil rights movement. ~ Ruben Santiago-Hudson
Raphel Santiago quotes by Ruben Santiago-Hudson
It's easy. You draw a red line on the ground, right? Then you wait for a chicken to come along. When he arrives, he puts his beak right on the line and he's hypnotized! ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
Maybe we should consider this for a second. Maybe, instead of surrendering the fight because a Marine made a mistake, maybe we should train Santiago. What do you think, I'm just spit-balling, but maybe we, as officers, have a responsibility to this country to see that the men charged with its security are trained professionals. Maybe we have that responsibility to other members of the Corps. Yes, yes, I'm certain I once read something like that. See, and now I'm trying to think about how I'd feel if some Marine got hurt or killed because a Pfc. in my command didn't know what the fuck he was doing. And I'm trying to think about how the other members of his unit might feel, putting their lives in the hands of a man they can't count on ... and this brief meditation has brought me around to thinking that your suggestion of transferring Private Santiago off base, while expeditious, and certainly painless, might not be, in a manner of speaking, the "American Way". ~ Aaron Sorkin
Raphel Santiago quotes by Aaron Sorkin
Just trying to be different - when I hear something - I don't like to go trampling on other people's sounds. ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
I'm not a method actor, but I'm a big research kind of actor. ~ Ruben Santiago-Hudson
Raphel Santiago quotes by Ruben Santiago-Hudson
What is the meaning of life? This meaning is not for you to find, but for you to define. The meaning of life is found in the purposes that we pursue as we grow older. ~ Miriam Defensor Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Miriam Defensor Santiago
El hambre agudiza el ingenio," said Raphael.
Hunger sharpens the wit.
"Good proverb," said Magnus. "However, like most proverbs, it sounds wise and yet does not actually clarify anything. ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
I don't like to go trampling on other people's sounds. That's really about it - I don't gravitate towards it, I try to move away from it. ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
With Shakespeare, the hard work is to find out why he said it and how it can relate to the audience. ~ Ruben Santiago-Hudson
Raphel Santiago quotes by Ruben Santiago-Hudson
I screw up on the delay settings, so pretty much everything is manually done by me - I don't have those presets like the Edge has. ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
Nothing you love is left behind. You come back to it once you understand it, once you see its essence as it is: pure and flawless - once you refuse to define your life without it. Look into yourself. The only thing you regret in the end is falling for someone's definition of love instead of exploring its infinite potential. It is not saying "I love you" to people who should have heard it from you. There is no flaw in love. ~ Vladimira Chalyova
Raphel Santiago quotes by Vladimira Chalyova
I would be the last to deny that the greatest scientific pioneers belonged to an aristocracy of the spirit and were exceptionally intelligent, something that we as modest investigators will never attain, no matter how much we exert ourselves. Nevertheless ... I continue to believe that there is always room for anyone with average intelligence ... to utilize his energy and ... any man could, if he were so inclined, be the sculptor of his own brain, and that even the least gifted may, like the poorest land that has been well-cultivated and fertilized, produce an abundant harvest.. ~ Santiago Ramon Y Cajal
Raphel Santiago quotes by Santiago Ramon Y Cajal
The ice in Raphael's voice could have laid the whole of New York City under frost for a week in midsummer ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
I can't stand the comfort zone. So many people I know, their parents give them their homes, and they get married and have children, or whatever. That's it. They don't ever go beyond that. That's not what life is. ~ Jimmy Santiago Baca
Raphel Santiago quotes by Jimmy Santiago Baca
I can hardly understand the Australian accent. ~ Joey Santiago
Raphel Santiago quotes by Joey Santiago
I'm not gay," said Raphael. "I'm not straight. I'm not interested." "Your sexuality is 'not interested'?" Alec asked curiously. Raphael said, "That's right. ~ Cassandra Clare
Raphel Santiago quotes by Cassandra Clare
He couldn't have known it, but among the original run of The History of Love, at least one copy was destined to change a life.

This particular book was one of the last of the two thousand to be printed, and sat for longer than the rest in a warehouse in the outskirts of Santiago, absorbing the humidity. From there it was finally sent to a bookstore in Buenos Aires. The careless owner hardly noticed it, and for some years it languished on the shelves, acquiring a pattern of mildew across the cover. It was a slim volume, and its position on the shelf wasn't exactly prime: crowded on the left by an overweight biography of a minor actress, and on the right by the once-bestselling novel of an author that everyone had since forgotten, it hardly left its spine visible to even the most rigorous browser. When the store changed owners it fell victim to a massive clearance, and was trucked off to another warehouse, foul, dingy, crawling with daddy longlegs, where it remained in the dark and damp before finally being sent to a small secondhand bookstore not far from the home of the writer Jorge Luis Borges.

The owner took her time unpacking the books she'd bought cheaply and in bulk from the warehouse. One morning, going through the boxes, she discovered the mildewed copy of The History of Love. She'd never heard of it, but the title caught her eye. She put it aside, and during a slow hour in the shop she read the opening chapter, called 'The Age of Silence.'
