I believe that order is better than chaos, creation better than destruction. I prefer gentleness to violence, forgiveness to vendetta. On the whole I think knowledge is preferable to ignorance, and I am sure human sympathy is more valuable than ideology. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Preferable quotes by Leo Tolstoy
Sense never fails to give them that have it, Words enough to
make them understood. It too often happens in some conversations,
as in Apothecary Shops, that those Pots that are Empty, or have
Things of small Value in them, are as gaudily Dress'd as those that
are full of precious Drugs.
They that soar too high, often fall hard, making a low and level
Dwelling preferable. The tallest Trees are most in the Power of the
Winds, and Ambitious Men of the Blasts of Fortune. Buildings have
need of a good Foundation, that lie so much exposed to the
Weather. ~ William Penn
Preferable quotes by William Penn
What is more, in fact, we very soon look upon the world as something whose non-existence is not only conceivable, but even preferable to its existence. Therefore our astonishment at it easily passes into a brooding over that *fatality* which could nevertheless bring about its existence, and by virtue of which such an immense force as is demanded for the production and maintenance of such a world could be directed so much against its own interest and advantage."

―from_The World as Will and Representation_. Translated from the German by E. F. J. Payne. In Two Volumes, Volume II, p. 171 ~ Arthur Schopenhauer
Preferable quotes by Arthur Schopenhauer
It's preferable to die than to lose the life. ~ Frei Tito De Alencar Lima
Preferable quotes by Frei Tito De Alencar Lima
Some natural disasters were preferable to the sorts that people could wreak upon each other. ~ Mark Lawrence
Preferable quotes by Mark Lawrence
Charlotte had tried to read his work. It seemed only polite, after all, given that they were neighbors. But after a while, she'd simply had to give up. 'Love' always rhymed with 'dove,' (Where, she wondered, did one locate that many doves in Derbyshire?) and 'you' rhymed so often with 'dew,' that Charlotte had wanted to grab Rupert by the shoulders and yell, 'Few, hue, new, woo, Waterloo!' Good gracious, even 'moo' would have been preferable. Rupert's poetry could surely have been improved by a cow or two.
Saying moo on cue at Waterloo. ~ Julia Quinn
Preferable quotes by Julia Quinn
As was true of all human effort, there was never advancement. Everything added meant something lost, and about as often as not the thing lost was preferable to the thing gained. ~ Charles Frazier
Preferable quotes by Charles Frazier
Լաւ է աչքով կոյր ըլլալ՝ քան մտքով:
It is preferable to be blind by eyesight, than by mind. ~ Saint Vardapet Eghishē
Preferable quotes by Saint Vardapet Eghishē
As Keyes noted, one bet soundly considered is preferable to many poorly understood. ~ Roger Lowenstein
Preferable quotes by Roger Lowenstein
You see, Vorarbeiter, in the game of life, it is always preferable to be a man of the shadows, and even the darkness, if necessary. In this way, you run things, but you are never, ever seen. ~ Mark T. Sullivan
Preferable quotes by Mark T. Sullivan
We have developed a corollary that is neither love nor forgiveness - namely, tolerance. The problem with this is clear: I can "tolerate" you without it costing me anything very much. I can shrug my shoulders, walk away, and leave you to do your own thing. That, admittedly, is preferable to my taking you by the throat and shaking you until you agree with me. But it is certainly not love. ~ N. T. Wright
Preferable quotes by N. T. Wright
What exactly did having needs mean, while he was on the subject? That Delaney needed to have sex? that she craved an orgasm? And if that were the case, why couldn't she just take care of the matter on her won in the privacy of her home without putting him through all this torture? Anything was preferable to the thought of her being with Jake. ~ Sarah Mayberry
Preferable quotes by Sarah Mayberry
I don't think the Bonzo Dog could have evolved in America, nor could the old Nice: because of their musical discipline. This is one thing that British groups do have, a sort of discipline. Sometimes it can get a bit soulless, but on the whole I think it's preferable to the American alternative. ~ Jon Lord
Preferable quotes by Jon Lord
Tough and weird is preferable to pathetic and vulnerable ... ~ Christina Baker Kline
Preferable quotes by Christina Baker Kline
Security being the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that whatever form thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the least expence and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others. ~ Thomas Paine
Preferable quotes by Thomas Paine
You're beautiful" is a better compliment than "You're hot". - Both of these are somewhat preferable to "Damn bitch, you're fine ~ Tom Tiding
Preferable quotes by Tom Tiding
An enemy one could respect was far preferable to an ally without honor... ~ Erin Beaty
Preferable quotes by Erin Beaty
10 ways to raise a wild child. Not everyone wants to raise wild, free thinking children. But for those of you who do, here's my tips:

1. Create safe space for them to be outside for a least an hour a day. Preferable barefoot & muddy.

2. Provide them with toys made of natural materials. Silks, wood, wool, etc...Toys that encourage them to use their imagination. If you're looking for ideas, Google: 'Waldorf Toys'. Avoid noisy plastic toys. Yea, maybe they'll learn their alphabet from the talking toys, but at the expense of their own unique thoughts. Plastic toys that talk and iPads in cribs should be illegal. Seriously!

3. Limit screen time. If you think you can manage video game time and your kids will be the rare ones that don't get addicted, then go for it. I'm not that good so we just avoid them completely. There's no cable in our house and no video games. The result is that my kids like being outside cause it's boring inside...hah! Best plan ever! No kid is going to remember that great day of video games or TV. Send them outside!

4. Feed them foods that support life. Fluoride free water, GMO free organic foods, snacks free of harsh preservatives and refined sugars. Good oils that support healthy brain development. Eat to live!

5. Don't helicopter parent. Stay connected and tuned into their needs and safety, but don't hover. Kids like adults need space to roam and explore without the constant voice of an adult ~ Brooke Hampton
Preferable quotes by Brooke Hampton
There is a very popular opinion that choosing life is inherently superior to choosing death. This belief that life is
inherently preferable to death is one of the most widespread superstitions. This bias constitutes one of the most obstinate mythologies of the human species. ~ Mitchell Heisman
Preferable quotes by Mitchell Heisman
You must have faith in the duke, and in true love."
She groaned. "Easy for you to say! You are not in a wedding dress laced so tightly as to make it impossible to breathe, uncertain if your groom will arrive before suffocating to death. Though perhaps that would be preferable to life after being jilted at the altar. ~ Maya Rodale
Preferable quotes by Maya Rodale
Human life grows cheaper with every mewling, puking infant that is born. Any form of birth control, no matter how unjust or extreme, is preferable to that tyranny exercised so criminally now by those who, in their filth, stupidity, rut and obnoxious lust, blindly and selfishly birth endlessly forth their disgusting progeny in chaotic, cancerous growth, shoving and forcing the guilty in with the innocent in this already over-stuffed planetary rat-box of accelerating madness and asphyxiation. ~ E.E. Rehmus
Preferable quotes by E.E. Rehmus
With a dog, it's almost like having a kid." "No, it's not like having a kid," she said. "It's preferable in every possible way. That makes it like having a dog. ~ J. Ryan Stradal
Preferable quotes by J. Ryan Stradal
I don't think I could ever see her closely," the sentinel replied, "however close she came." His own voice was hushed and regretful, echoing with lost chances. "She has a newness," he said. "Everything is for the first time. See how she moves, how she walks, how she turns her head -- all for the first time, the first time anyone has ever done these things. See how she draws her breath and lets it go again, as though no one else in the world knew that air was good. It is all for her. If I learned that she had been born this very morning, I would only be surprised that she was so old." The second sentinel stared down from his tower at the three wanderers. The tall man saw him first, and next the dour woman. Their eyes reflected nothing but his armor, grim and cankered and empty. But then the girl in the ruined black cloak raised her head, and he stepped back from the parapet, putting out one tin glove against her glance. In a moment she passed into the shadow of the castle with her companions, and he lowered his hand. "She may be mad," he said calmly. "No grown girl looks like that unless she is mad. That would be annoying, but far preferable to the remaining possibility." "Which is?" the younger man prompted after a silence.
"Which is that she was indeed born this morning. I would rather that she were mad. ~ Peter S. Beagle
Preferable quotes by Peter S. Beagle
As distasteful as it is to decline your invitation, I'm afraid that it is preferable to attending yet another half-assed weekend eating gunky canapes in that cesspool of a shack you call a beach cottage. ~ A.C. Kemp
Preferable quotes by A.C. Kemp
I feel that an understanding could be reached with Germany which would result in a lasting peace with Europe and believe that a German victory is preferable to a British and Soviet victory. ~ Pierre Laval
Preferable quotes by Pierre Laval
When there is a choice about it, a great sacrifice is preferable to a small sacrifice, because we compensate ourselves for a greatone with self-admiration, which is not possible with a small one. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
Preferable quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche
Socialists will often talk as if some form of superbly equalized destitution were preferable to "maldistributed" plenty. A national income that is rapidly growing in absolute terms for practically everyone will be deplored because it is making the rich richer. ~ Henry Hazlitt
Preferable quotes by Henry Hazlitt
For the more limited, if adequate, is always preferable. ~ Aristotle.
Preferable quotes by Aristotle.
Even the best of men in authority are liable to be corrupted by passion. We may conclude then that the law is reason without passion, and it is therefore preferable to any individual. ~ Aristotle.
Preferable quotes by Aristotle.
Daniel was slow to take up the cheer. But when he did, he meant it. This was politics. It was ugly, it was irrational, but it was preferable to war. Roger was being cheered because he had won. What did it mean to win? It meant being cheered. So Daniel huzzahed, as lustily as his dry pipes and creaky ribs would permit, and was astounded to see the way people came a-running: not only the Quality from their town-houses, but hooligans and Vagabonds from bonfire-strewn fields to the north, to throng around Roger and cheer him. Not because they agreed with his positions, or even knew who he was, but because he was plainly enough the man of the hour. ~ Neal Stephenson
Preferable quotes by Neal Stephenson
Among all the accomplishments of youth there is none preferable to a decent and agreeable behavior among men, a modest freedom of speech, a soft and elegant manner of address, a graceful and lovely deportment, a cheerful gravity and good-humor, with a mind appearing ever serene under the ruffling accidents of human life. ~ Isaac Watts
Preferable quotes by Isaac Watts
Long weekends at festivals, short weeks at home, all summer long: now that is surely preferable to the immense cost and headache of the nuclear family holiday in the sun? ~ Tom Hodgkinson
Preferable quotes by Tom Hodgkinson
Kugel was a firm believer that death was not always a bad thing - that life often reached such levels of crapitude that dying was preferable to living. ~ Shalom Auslander
Preferable quotes by Shalom Auslander
Women ... to them any wedding is better than no wedding and a big wedding with a villain preferable to a small one with a saint. ~ William Faulkner
Preferable quotes by William Faulkner
Miss Hepplewhite looked pained.
"Miss Peck," she said at last, "a young lady should never, ever, under any circumstances whatsoever, run. Should you find yourself in a situation where you are at risk, it is always preferable to faint. ~ Jennifer L. Holm
Preferable quotes by Jennifer L. Holm
Fines are preferable to imprisonment and other types of punishment because they are more efficient. With a fine, the punishment to offenders is also revenue to the State. ~ Gary Becker
Preferable quotes by Gary Becker
In Dostoevsky illness and death were almost always dirty, impoverished affairs. Crushed beneath wagon wheels, mud, typhus, blood-stained handkerchiefs. And so on. But damned if that weren't preferable to this. Slow disintegration in a polished machine. ~ LINDQVIST JOHN AJVIDE
Preferable quotes by LINDQVIST JOHN AJVIDE
Classical liberalism . . . does not wholly define modern American conservatism. There is an added element: a concern with social and civic virtue. The term virtue has become a bad word in some quarters of American life. (It is especially unpopular with the chronically wicked and depraved.) Young people, especially, tend to associate it with finger-wagging and with people who tell you how to live your life. This is a very narrow view of virtue: It applies only to what it is good to do, rather than what it is good to be and what it is good to love. . . .

Conservatives recognize, of course, that people frequently fall short of these standards. In their personal conduct, conservatives do not claim to be better than anyone else. . . . But for conservatives, these lapses do not provide an excuse to get rid of the standards. Even hypocrisy--professing one thing but doing another--is in the conservative view preferable to a denial of standards because such denial leads to moral chaos or nihilism. ~ Dinesh D'Souza
Preferable quotes by Dinesh D'Souza
Dying of tetanus might be preferable to spending any more time in your company... ~ Jessica Gadziala
Preferable quotes by Jessica Gadziala
All this happiness on display is suspect ... If they think - and they could be right - that continued torture and summary executions, ethnic cleansing and occasional genocide are preferable to an invasion, they should be sombre in their view. ~ Ian McEwan
Preferable quotes by Ian McEwan
Facing facts is definitely preferable to facing defeat. ~ Gordon R. Dickson
Preferable quotes by Gordon R. Dickson
Being worshiped (for most women) is preferable to being defiled, and being looked up to is better than being walked on. It is hard for women to refuse the worship of what otherwise is despised: being female. Woman's special moral nature has sometimes been used to plead her case: being moral, she will be able to upgrade the morality of the nation if she has the rights of citizenship, the tone of the marketplace if she is employed, the quality of the church if she officiates, the humanism of government if she is in it; being moral, she will be on the side of good. It has also been argued, more loudly and more often, that her moral nature must not be contaminated by vulgar responsibilities; that she has a special moral role to play in making the nation and the world good - she must be in her person the example of good that will civilize and educate men and make the nation moral. One cannot do what men do - not in government, not in the family, not even in religion, not anywhere - and be an example of good. ~ Andrea Dworkin
Preferable quotes by Andrea Dworkin
Sometimes I get lost in the rhythm of the paddling. I even count the strokes it takes to get me to a point of land, The play of the muscles in one's arms and shoulders, and the feel of palm against worn wood, are preferable to glancing at a speedometer ~ Richard Proenneke
Preferable quotes by Richard Proenneke
We have the satisfaction of knowing that whatever we did, we did at the time in the best of faith. Of course, we took some bold steps and often did things with much single-mindedness; but this is surely preferable to never putting one's convictions to the test, for lack of will or courage. ~ Kazuo Ishiguro
Preferable quotes by Kazuo Ishiguro
For me, coming to work and laughing is so much more preferable than coming to work and having to cry over a corpse or something. That's a drag. ~ Busy Philipps
Preferable quotes by Busy Philipps
A relationship with an imaginary woman is preferable to a relationship with a real one. ~ Salman Rushdie
Preferable quotes by Salman Rushdie
Age in a virtuous person, of either sex, carries in it an authority which makes it preferable to all the pleasures of youth. ~ Richard Steele
Preferable quotes by Richard Steele
One day's life of a lion is preferable to hundred years of a jackal. ~ Tipu Sultan
Preferable quotes by Tipu Sultan
It is more than petty treason to the Republic, to call a free citizen a servant. The whole class of young women, whose bread depends upon their labour, are taught to believe that the most abject poverty is preferable to domestic service. Hundreds of half-naked girls work in the paper-mills, or in any other manufactory, for less than half the wages they would receive in service; but they think their equality is compromised by the latter, and nothing but the wish to obtain some particular article of finery will ever induce them to submit to it. ~ Frances Trollope
Preferable quotes by Frances Trollope
I see you go bare-shod. This is most likely extremely sensible. Shoes are no end of trouble for girls ... How many have danced to death in slippers of silk and glass and fur and wood? Too many to count - the graveyards, they are so full these days. You are very wise to let your soles become grubby with mud, to let them grow their own slippers of moss and clay and calluses. This is far preferable to shoes which may become wicked at any moment. ~ Catherynne M Valente
Preferable quotes by Catherynne M Valente
Talent can be a nice thing to have sometimes. You look good, attract attention, and if you're lucky, you make some money. Women flock to you. In that sense, having talent's preferable to having none. But talent only functions when it's supported by a tough, unyielding physical and mental focus. All it takes is one screw in your brain to come loose and fall off, or some connection in your body to break down, and your concentration vanishes, like the dew at dawn.
[ ... ]
If talent's the foundation you rely on, and yet it's so unreliable that you have no idea what's going to happen to it the next minute, what meaning does it have? ~ Haruki Murakami
Preferable quotes by Haruki Murakami
One day, a pretty, fresh-faced young lady - intelligent and sincerely concerned - asked me if abortion wasn't preferable to making a young, unmarried girl have a baby she didn't want and which would, therefore, grow up unloved and probably turn out to be a criminal. I gave an answer which apparently she hadn't considered. I told her there were literally millions of people in this country who wanted but could not have children and who waited eagerly, sometimes for years, to adopt the baby she had described. ~ Ronald Reagan
Preferable quotes by Ronald Reagan
Strength and weakness are both mental constructs. Now you choose, what's preferable for you. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Preferable quotes by Abhijit Naskar
The productions of a great genius, with many lapses and inadvertences, are infinitely preferable to the works of an inferior kind of author which are scrupulously exact, and conformable to all the rules of correct writing. ~ Joseph Addison
Preferable quotes by Joseph Addison
It is preferable to have a virgin mind than a virgin body. Each is good if each be possible; if it be not possible, let me be chaste, not to man but to God. ~ Ambrose Of Milan
Preferable quotes by Ambrose Of Milan
For the purposes of this book, however, the relevant question is much narrower: the issue is not whether, in general, a national securities regulator is preferable to Canada's fragmented provincial securities regulatory system. The key question, for our purposes, is this: Would a national securities regulator have made a material difference in this specific case? Framed this way, the question is much more challenging and the answer far less certain. ~ Paul Halpern
Preferable quotes by Paul Halpern
In a despotic government, the only principle by which the tyrant who is to move the whole machine means to regulate and manage the people is fear, by the servile dread of his power. But a free government, which of all others is far the most preferable, cannot be supported without virtue. ~ Samuel Williams
Preferable quotes by Samuel Williams
Prayer is always acceptable to God when dictated by the heart, for the intention is everything in his sight; and the prayer of the heart is preferable to one read from a book, however beautiful it may be, if read with the lips rather than with the thought. ~ Allan Kardec
Preferable quotes by Allan Kardec
That's right, I'm a reclusive pervert, and I make no apologies for it. And, giving the matter some thought, a reclusive pervert is much preferable to an extroverted pervert. ~ L. H. Cosway
Preferable quotes by L. H. Cosway
Upon the principles of reason, the good of many is preferable to the good of a few or of one; a lasting good is to be preferred before a temporary, the public before the private. ~ Mary Astell
Preferable quotes by Mary Astell
How much real comfort every one might enjoy if he would be contented with the lot in which heaven has cast him, and how much trouble would be avoided if people would only "let well alone." A moderate independence, quietly and honestly procured, is certainly every way preferable even to immense possessions achieved by the wear and tear of mind and body so necessary to procure them. Yet there are very few individuals, let them be doing ever so well in the world, who are not always straining every nerve to do better; and this is one of the many causes why failures in business so frequently occur among us. ~ Grace MacGowan Cooke
Preferable quotes by Grace MacGowan Cooke
I spent most of my youth hauling sides of beef and pork to my father's shop. Carrying you is far more enjoyable."
"How sweet," Annabelle mumbled sickly, her eyes closed. "Every woman dreams of being told that she's preferable to a dead cow. ~ Lisa Kleypas
Preferable quotes by Lisa Kleypas
I asked myself whether a life devoid of any affection, of any goal, a life one fills with a thousand trifles intended to relieve its monotony, populated with human beings one seeks out in order not to be alone and whom one flees to avoid being bored by them, whether such a life isn't ridiculous, whether anything whatsoever wouldn't be preferable. ~ Emmanuel Bove
Preferable quotes by Emmanuel Bove
Humankind devotes much of its collective energy to managing personal and institutional anxiety and dealing with unsuccessful efforts of its civilians to cope with the tides of shifting social and economic conditions. Every city corridor houses downtrodden citizens whom have given up on life, the dopers, smoke hounds, crack heads, and unrepentant drunkards whom spend their days pushing shopping carts and their nights sleeping in gutters. In marked contrast to these filthy and wretched souls whom inhabit the skid row of every city's streets, all animals display an admirable state of hygiene and a zest for life. Except for poor critters sentenced to live confined in a zoo and domestic animals held captives in deplorable harvesting pens, all animals live a carefree existence that is preferable to living off stress sandwiches of modern humankind. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Preferable quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
He remembered the old-timers from his navy days. Grizzled lifers who could soundly sleep while two meters away their shipmates played a raucous game of poker or watched the vids with the volume all the way up. Back then he'd assumed it was just learned behavior, the body adapting so it could get enough rest in an environment that never really had downtime. Now he wondered if those vets found the constant noise preferable. A way to keep their lost shipmates away. They probably went home after their twenty and never slept again. ~ James S.A. Corey
Preferable quotes by James S.A. Corey
But let there be no doubt: he'd prefer to be handling those challenges adaptively because doing well is preferable. And because - and this is, without question, the most important theme of this entire book - kids do well if they can. ~ Ross W. Greene
Preferable quotes by Ross W. Greene
For one day spent well, and agreeably to your precepts, is preferable to an eternity of error. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Preferable quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
The Ministry of Magic does not wish me to tell you this. It is possible that some of your parents will be horrified that I have done so – either because they will not believe that Lord Voldemort has returned, or because they think I should not tell you so, young as you are. It is my belief, however, that the truth is generally preferable to lies, and that any attempt to pretend that Cedric died as the result of an accident, or some sort of blunder of his own, is an insult to his memory. ~ J.K. Rowling
Preferable quotes by J.K. Rowling
The pioneer and would-be spacefarer Elon Musk said he would like to die on Mars, though not on impact. Martian conditions suggest death on impact might be preferable. ~ James Lovelock
Preferable quotes by James Lovelock
War is the greatest plague that can afflict humanity, it destroys religion, it destroys states, it destroys families. Any scourge is preferable to it. ~ Martin Luther
Preferable quotes by Martin Luther
Somewhere in the back of their minds, hosts and guests alike know that the dinner party is a source of untold irritation, and that even the dullest evening spent watching television is preferable. ~ Craig Brown
Preferable quotes by Craig Brown
The radio is at the root of the evil, their rule is: No silence, ever. When anything happens, the commentator has to speak without a moment's pause for gathering wisdom. Falsehood and inanity are preferable to silence. ~ Barbara Kingsolver
Preferable quotes by Barbara Kingsolver
A likely impossibility is always preferable to an unconvincing possibility. The story should never be made up of improbable incidents; there should be nothing of the sort in it. ~ Aristotle.
Preferable quotes by Aristotle.
You can't fit in with people by pretending to be just like they are; you fit in by engaging in a dialogue about your differences, and by putting aside the assumption that your way of life is in any way preferable to theirs. ~ Andrew Solomon
Preferable quotes by Andrew Solomon
Some build their sense of personal worth by comparing themselves to others. That approach can lead to feelings of inadequacy or superiority. It is preferable to look directly to our Father for our sense of self-worth. ~ Quentin L. Cook
Preferable quotes by Quentin L. Cook
I wish you'd tell the truth, but since I know that isn't preferable--"
"The truth is always preferable, my dear. It's just not always wise. ~ Sabrina Jeffries
Preferable quotes by Sabrina Jeffries
And so this is where the post Cold War has brought us: to the recognition that the very totalitarism that we fought against in the decades following WWII might, in quite a few circumstances, be preferable to a situation where nobody is in charge. There are things worse than communism, it turned out, and in Iraq we brought them about ourselves. ~ Robert D. Kaplan
Preferable quotes by Robert D. Kaplan
They also bring to mind what sometimes seems to be a rapt predilection of small but influential cults of intellectuals or esthetes for what is generally regarded as perverse dispirited or distastefully unintelligible. The award of a Nobel Prize in literature to Andre Gide who in his work fervently and openly insists that pederasty is the superior and preferable way of life for adolescent boys furnishes a memorable example of such judgments. Renowned critics and some professors in our best universities reverently acclaim as the superlative expression of genius James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake a 628page collection of erudite gibberish indistinguishable to most people from the familiar word salad produced by hebephrenic patients on the back wards of any state hospital. ~ Hervey M. Cleckley
Preferable quotes by Hervey M. Cleckley
It's never been a point of reference to look to a man. It's not always a good thing, I suppose, but I think independence is always preferable to dependence. ~ Catherine Tate
Preferable quotes by Catherine Tate
The best helps to growth in grace are the ill usage, the affronts, and the losses which befall us. We should receive them with all thankfulness, as preferable to all others, were it only on this account, that our will has no part therein. ~ John Wesley
Preferable quotes by John Wesley
While all doctors treat diseases, neurosurgeons work in the crucible of identity: every operation on the brain is, by necessity, a manipulation of the substance of our selves, and every conversation with a patient undergoing brain surgery cannot help but confront this fact. In addition, to the patient and family, the brain surgery is usually the most dramatic event they have ever faced and, as such, has the impact of any major life event. At those critical junctures, the question is not simply whether to live or die but what kind of life is worth living. Would you trade your ability - or your mother's - to talk for a few extra months of mute life? The expansion of your visual blind spot in exchange for eliminating the small possibility of a fatal brain hemorrhage? Your right hand's function to stop seizures? How much neurologic suffering would you let your child endure before saying that death is preferable? Because the brain mediates our experience of the world, any neurosurgical problem forces a patient and family, ideally with a doctor as a guide, to answer this question: What makes life meaningful enough to go on living? ~ Paul Kalanithi
Preferable quotes by Paul Kalanithi
God Almighty, I love life. Even this vile place, where the trees are shattered stubs and where nothing grows but craters, even the sights, scents, sounds, and stirrings of this place are preferable to the unchanging nothingness of the Great Darkness. ~ Dan Simmons
Preferable quotes by Dan Simmons
Defeat appears to me preferable to total Inaction. ~ John Adams
Preferable quotes by John Adams
They exploit, and deal, and shift ground constantly, but for all that you can get used to them. You can get used to their gleaming company towers and their nanocopter security, their cartels and their HOGs, their stretched-over-centuries unhuman patience and their assumed inheritance of godfather status for the human race. You can get so you're grateful for the there-but-for-the-grace-of-God relief of whatever little flange of existence they afford you on the corporate platform. You can get so it seems eminently preferable to a cold gut-swooping drop into the human chaos waiting below.

You can get so you're grateful.

Got to watch out for that. ~ Richard K. Morgan
Preferable quotes by Richard K. Morgan
But I cannot accept a vision of You as an engineer who spends His days maintaining the machine of morality. I cannot take the idea of You as an optimizer, introducing evil into human affairs in an attempt to create the best of all possible worlds. I cannot bear this cold mathematician's God who sees all the universe as nothing more than an elaborate problem to be solved. Such a world is a world with no meaning, one in which one history is no more or less preferable to any other. ~ Dexter Palmer
Preferable quotes by Dexter Palmer
Anything would have been preferable to that one moment when you find your reality has just been blown to pieces and would never be the same again. ~ Rose Wynters
Preferable quotes by Rose Wynters
A wise man should marry a virgin of a respectable family even if she is deformed. He should not marry one of a low-class family, through beauty. Marriage in a family of equal status is preferable. ~ Chanakya
Preferable quotes by Chanakya
The devil you knew was always preferable to the devil you didn't. ~ Stephen King
Preferable quotes by Stephen King
In case you were wondering, it is preferable to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven - I've done both. ~ Cassandra Clare
Preferable quotes by Cassandra Clare
From a distance, a clone's luminous eyes are meant to draw in humans and make them feel safe. Up close, the eyes appear hollow. Because of that, humans tend not to look into our eyes too closely, which I've been told is socially preferable, as eyes without souls behind them can be frightening. ~ Rachel Cohn
Preferable quotes by Rachel Cohn
What was boring was somehow more elegant, more perfect, for it was incontrovertible. The boring was everything that certainly was. The boring was everything that had stood the test of time. The boring was that set of truths that were so long fixed that erosion had begun to sand them down. The boring was geological; the boring was universal. The boring, therefore, was preferable. ~ Rick Moody
Preferable quotes by Rick Moody
A boy is in search of faith. Such a faith that he went to the forest for it, although it is not always preferable. The God with his entire presence is everywhere, but this boy, he loved the forest. He always thought that the forest is better than the city; free from artificially fabricated environment, free from social animals and full of real animals, whose intentions are very clear, far clearer than the social animals. When they search for prey, they use claws and teeth and jaws and roars, they don't use soft words, fake emotions and false love. ~ Sameem Ul Islam
Preferable quotes by Sameem Ul Islam
Think of it. We know truth for the cruel instrument it is. Beauty is infinitely preferable to truth. We invent beauty. Faiths, political movements, high ideals, belief in love and fellowship. All of them are lies. We tell those lies, among others, endless others. We improve on history and myth and religion, make each more beautiful, better, easier to believe in. Our lies are not perfect, of course. The truths are too big. But perhaps someday we will find one great lie that all humanity can use. ~ George R R Martin
Preferable quotes by George R R Martin
Looking at Rita, I have long found social injustice preferable to the struggle against it. ~ Lyudmila Ulitskaya
Preferable quotes by Lyudmila Ulitskaya
The propounders of what are called the "ethics of evolution," when the 'evolution of ethics' would usually better express the object of their speculations, adduce a number of more or less interesting facts and more or less sound arguments, in favour of the origin of the moral sentiments, in the same way as other natural phenomena, by a process of evolution. I have little doubt, for my own part, that they are on the right track; but as the immoral sentiments have no less been evolved, there is, so far, as much natural sanction for the one as the other. The thief and the murderer follow nature just as much as the philanthropist. Cosmic evolution may teach us how the good and the evil tendencies of man may have come about; but, in itself, it is incompetent to furnish any better reason why what we call good is preferable to what we call evil than we had before. ~ Thomas Henry Huxley

Are you saying a society wracked by plague is preferable to one wracked by indifference? ~ Bernard Beckett
Preferable quotes by Bernard Beckett
the preferable way to treat one another is with love and kindness; that pursuit of material gain is ultimately empty when measured against eternity; and that somehow, as human beings, we are all connected spiritually. ~ Christopher Moore

James Hardie(R) siding is a sustainable and marvelous substitute for wood. It's available pre-colored and the finish truly looks like high-grade wood siding. I've used this product line for years, and have been delighted with the results. It's the only product I will consider substituting for wood, and in many climates it's significantly preferable because of its stability. ~ Sarah Susanka

If there is anything I've learned, is that piety is smarter than hate, that mercy is preferable even to justice itself, that if you go around the world with friendly look, one does good friends. ~ Philip Gibbs
