As John Adams famously wrote during the American Revolution, "I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. Our sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history and naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry and porcelain." So maybe today they're writing apps rather than studying poetry, but that's an adjustment for the age. ~ Fareed Zakaria
Politics And War quotes by Fareed Zakaria
Today the real test of power is not capacity to make war but capacity to prevent it. ~ Anne O'Hare McCormick
Politics And War quotes by Anne O'Hare McCormick
Politics and war are remarkably similar situations. ~ Newt Gingrich
Politics And War quotes by Newt Gingrich
The science of government it is my duty to study, more than all other sciences; the arts of legislation and administration and negotiation ought to take the place of, indeed exclude, in a manner, all other arts. I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. Our sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history and naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry and porcelain. ~ John Adams
Politics And War quotes by John Adams
Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or who says it. ~ Malcolm X
Politics And War quotes by Malcolm X
I must study politics and war," wrote John Adams, "that my sons may have the liberty to study mathematics, and philosophy, geography, natural history, and naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children the right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain." Adams saw clearly that politics is the indispensable foundation for things elegant and beautiful. First and above all else, you must secure life, liberty and the right to pursue your own happiness. ~ Charles Krauthamer John Adams
Politics And War quotes by Charles Krauthamer John Adams
I have to study politics and war so that my sons can study mathematics, commerce and agriculture, so their sons can study poetry, painting and music. ~ John Quincy Adams
Politics And War quotes by John Quincy Adams
Twice a year, I have lunch with Dr. George Will and Dr. Charles Krauthammer, who write and speak about important issues in the world, such as politics and war and gay marriage. But at lunch, all we talk about is baseball, which is good because I can't talk fluently about anything else, especially with two guys that, when it comes to intelligence, make me feel like Fred Flintstone.

At lunch one day, Charles said, without apology, "I read the front page for ninety seconds every day, then I go straight to the box scores." To which, George said, "Why do you waste the ninety seconds? ~ Tim Kurkjian
Politics And War quotes by Tim Kurkjian
Politics and war were just different names for power, and the price of power was predictably high and could be precisely measured-in dollards, yen, euros, rubles, riyals, and blood. ~ Tara Janzen
Politics And War quotes by Tara Janzen
I played in bombed-out houses and grew up with the ever-present consequences of a lost war and the awareness that my own country had inflicted terrible pain on many nations during the horrific World War II. ~ Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Politics And War quotes by Dieter F. Uchtdorf
White liberals are the most racist people there are, because they put blacks in a box and insist that they think one way - and if they don't, they attack them as illegitimate, all the while denying that their policies destroy blacks. ~ Benjamin Carson
Politics And War quotes by Benjamin Carson
In politics, Joseph Smith was something of a radical. He preached, instead of democracy, a version of theocratic rule within a framework given by his own prophetic leadership. At Nauvoo, Smith affected a Napoleonic uniform and made himself into a general and quasi king of the polity he had constituted. ~ Noah Feldman
Politics And War quotes by Noah Feldman
Philosophy is not politics, and we do our best, within our all-too-human limitations, to seek the truth, not to score points against opponents. There is little satisfaction in gaining an easy triumph over a weak opponent while ignoring better arguments against your views. ~ Peter Singer
Politics And War quotes by Peter Singer
I'm not sure I'd classify any topics as off-limits, but I don't look for new territories to offend. There's my joke about when my roommate beat cancer. People talk about cancer survivors like they're warriors, but from where I was sitting, she was just watching television and eating soup. Like, did she go to war? No. She kind of just sat around. ~ Amy Schumer
Politics And War quotes by Amy Schumer
The smile of a politician is strong and friendly, but noncommittal. ~ Mason Cooley
Politics And War quotes by Mason Cooley
Nihilism is the rejection of the principles of civilisation as such ... I said civilisation, and not: culture. For I have noticed that many nihilists are great lovers of culture, as distinguished from, and opposed to, civilisation. Besides, the term culture leaves it undetermined what the thing is which is to be cultivated (blood and soil or the mind), whereas the term civilisation designates at once the process of making man a citizen, and not a slave; an inhabitant of cities, and not a rustic; a lover of peace, and not of war; a polite being, and not a ruffian. ~ Leo Strauss
Politics And War quotes by Leo Strauss
Landmines are among the most barbaric weapons of war, because they continue to kill and maim innocent people long after the war itself has ended. Also, fear of them keeps people off the land, and thus prevents them from growing food. ~ Kofi Annan
Politics And War quotes by Kofi Annan
In searching for a rationale to go to war, Bush settled on the notion of Saddam as an incarnation of evil, basically, and convinced himself that Saddam was fundamentally Adolf Hitler reborn. I think his feelings towards Saddam were in fact quite genuine and quite legitimately hostile. He was not play acting. ~ Rick Atkinson
Politics And War quotes by Rick Atkinson
It's important for me to fight for principles. But I am not willing to cope with the nastiness of politics anymore and the endless destructive confrontations that it leads to. ~ Ingrid Betancourt
Politics And War quotes by Ingrid Betancourt
In these days of wars and rumors of wars, haven't you ever dreamed of a place where there was peace and security, where living was not a struggle but a lasting delight? ~ Frank Capra
Politics And War quotes by Frank Capra
I am not protesting against the conduct of the war, but against the political errors and insincerities for which the fighting men are being sacrificed. ~ Siegfried Sassoon
Politics And War quotes by Siegfried Sassoon
All working, practical political systems, even those professing to originate in moral grandeur, are based upon and operate by contempt of human life and the individual fate ... ~ Katherine Anne Porter
Politics And War quotes by Katherine Anne Porter
Europe is a molehill. All great empires and revolutions have been on the Orient; six hundred millions live there. ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
Politics And War quotes by Napoleon Bonaparte
Exchange love for hate ... Thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising. ~ Maya Angelou
Politics And War quotes by Maya Angelou
The army will hear nothing of politics from me and in return I expect to hear nothing of politics from the army. ~ H. H. Asquith
Politics And War quotes by H. H. Asquith
You must never believe that the enemy does not know how to conduct his own affairs. Indeed, if you want to be deceived less and want to bear less danger, the more the enemy is weak or the less the enemy is cautious, so much more must you esteem him. ~ Niccolo Machiavelli
Politics And War quotes by Niccolo Machiavelli
The moment workers can afford too little they rebel. The last time this was a real danger was 1950. Communists took advantage of supply problems and stirred up gullible people against their very own country. ~ Elfriede Jelinek
Politics And War quotes by Elfriede Jelinek
Politics are always a struggle for power, disguised and modified by prudence, reason and moral pretext. ~ William Hurrell Mallock
Politics And War quotes by William Hurrell Mallock
What Churchill described as the twin marauders of war and tyranny have been almost entirely banished from our continent. Today, hundreds of millions dwell in freedom, from the Baltic to the Adriatic, from the Western Approaches to the Aegean. ~ David Cameron
Politics And War quotes by David Cameron
If you expose what it is that we're doing, if you inform your fellow citizens about all the things that we're doing in the dark, we will destroy you. This is what their spate of prosecutions of whistleblowers have [sic] been about. It's what trying to threaten journalists, to criminalize what they do, is about. It's to create a climate of fear, so that nobody will bring accountability to them.
It's not going to work. I think it's starting to backfire, because it shows their true character and exactly why they can't be trusted to operate with power in secret. And we're certainly not going to be deterred by it in any way. The people who are going to be investigated are not the people reporting on this, but are people like Dianne Feinstein and her friends in the National Security Agency, who need investigation and transparency for all the things that they've been doing. ~ Glenn Greenwald
Politics And War quotes by Glenn Greenwald
On the streets of Moscow, looking into thousands of faces, I was reminded once again that it's not people who make war, but governments - and people deserve governments that fight for peace in the nuclear age. ~ Ronald Reagan
Politics And War quotes by Ronald Reagan
Many of the boys I saw in hospitals are now leading happy and useful lives, but they carry with them, day after day, the results of the war. If we do not achieve the ends for which they sacrificed - a peaceful world in which there exists freedom from fear of both aggression and want - we have failed. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Politics And War quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt
Wherever there is abuse there is also corruption. Politics, philosophy, theology, science, industry, any field with the potential to affect the well-being of others can be destroyed by abuse and saved by good will. ~ Criss Jami
Politics And War quotes by Criss Jami
Many people correctly make the point that our only hope is to turn to God. For example, Charles Lindbergh, who said that in his young manhood he thought "science was more important than either man or God," and that "without a highly developed science modern man lacks the power to survive," ... went to Germany after the war to see what Allied bombing had done to the Germans, who had been leaders in science. There, he says, "I learned that if his civilization is to continue, modern man must direct the material power of his science by the spiritual truths of his God." ~ Marion G. Romney
Politics And War quotes by Marion G. Romney
You will live to love again. You know you have lost your springtime girl, your Molly on the beach with the wind in her brown hair and red cloak. You have been gone too long from her, and too much has befallen you both. And what you loved, what both of you truly loved, was not each other. It was the time of your life. It was the spring of your years, and life running strong in you, and war on your doorstep and your strong, perfect bodies. Look back, in truth. You will find you recall fully as many quarrels and tears as you do lovemaking and kisses. Fitz. Be wise. Let her go, and keep those memories intact. Save what you can of her, and let her keep what she can of the wild and daring boy she loved. Because both he and that merry little miss are no more than memories anymore." She shook her head. "No more than memories. ~ Robin Hobb
Politics And War quotes by Robin Hobb
The carnival of carnage that takes place every day, month and year in the realm of industry; the thousands of useful lives that are annually sacrificed to the Moloch of greed; the blood tribute paid by labor to capitalism, brings forth no shout for vengeance and reparation; no tear, except from the family and friends of the victims. ~ D. Douglas Wilson
Politics And War quotes by D. Douglas Wilson
Japan has consistently remained a friend of Indonesia since the end of World War II and has regarded cooperation with Indonesia as a top priority. ~ Shinzo Abe
Politics And War quotes by Shinzo Abe
And when all the wars are over, a butterfly will still be beautiful. ~ Ruskin Bond
Politics And War quotes by Ruskin Bond
I took a trip in 2004, a year after the war started in Iraq. I played music on the streets of Baghdad for Iraqi civilians. I'd also play for U.S. soldiers at night when they were off duty in the bars. Then I would talk to people, and I would film them and ask them about their life and the conflict. ~ Michael Franti
Politics And War quotes by Michael Franti
It's our duty to love the poor, the orphaned, the weary and burdened. Matthew 11:28. Love can be its own kind of war. ~ Sarah McCoy
Politics And War quotes by Sarah McCoy
It was written in London under the advancing shadow of the Second World War, and it may be that the apprehensionsof those years can be felt vibrating from time to time in its pages. The historian, concerned as he is with the most vital of all studies, is often more subject than herealizes to the electric currents of contemporary mood. ~ C.V. Wedgwood
Politics And War quotes by C.V. Wedgwood
Abolish the Loyal League and the Ku Klux Klan; let us come together and stand together. ~ Nathan Bedford Forrest
Politics And War quotes by Nathan Bedford Forrest
Tom Paine generally took a critical stance when dealing with religion and the church, but in 1775, in an essay entitled, "Thoughts on Defensive War" he wrote as follows: "In the barbarous ages of the world, men in genernal had no liberty. the strong governed the weak a will; till the coming of Christ there was no sucht thing as political freedom in any part of the world... The Romans held the world in slavery and were themselves slaves of their emperors... Wherefore political as well as spiritual freedom is the gift of God through Christ ~ Edmund A. Opitz
Politics And War quotes by Edmund A. Opitz
The Money River, where the wealth of the nation flows. We were born on the banks of it-and so were most of the mediocre people we grew up with, went to private schools with, sailed and played tennis with. We can slurp from that mighty river to our hearts' content. And we can even take slurping lessons, so we can slurp more efficiently. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Politics And War quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
The police can use violence to say, expel citizens from a public park because they are enforcing duly constituted laws. Laws gain their legitimacy from the Constitution. The Constitution gains its legitimacy from something called 'the people.' But how did 'the people' actually grant legitimacy to the Constitution? As the American and French revolutions make clear: basically, through acts of illegal violence. So what gives the police the right to use force to suppress the very thing–a popular uprising–that granted them their right to use force to begin with? ~ David Graeber
Politics And War quotes by David Graeber
All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin. And therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words 'Ich bin ein Berliner!' ~ John F. Kennedy
Politics And War quotes by John F. Kennedy
The abolition of slavery, apart from preservation of the Union, was the most important result of our Civil War. But the transition was badly handled. Slaves were simply declared free and then left to their own devises. Southern Negroes, powerless, continued to be underprivileged in education, medical care, job opportunities and political status. ~ William Silverman
Politics And War quotes by William Silverman
Development is a fundamental part of our national security. It is extreme poverty- the realities of access to water and food- which create the long-term drivers of our insecurity. Most wars are fought over scarce resources and that is going to accelerate in the future. ~ Rajiv Shah
Politics And War quotes by Rajiv Shah
The Forty Rules of Love is a wise, joyous page-turner ... and one that speaks urgently to our war-ravaged times. ~ Thrity Umrigar
Politics And War quotes by Thrity Umrigar
Everybody complains that politics separates words from their meanings, and this is part of the reason why. Words are useful, but often their meanings are not. Sometimes what you want is feeling rather than meaning, warmth rather than content. And that takes verbiage. The ~ Barton Swaim
Politics And War quotes by Barton Swaim
But the fact is, again and again in my lifetime, the vicious vituperations, the polemics, the dialectics, the sophistries of politics have become vapour and mist, while what remains is the literature and the art, which at the time might have been merely tolerated by the politicos. ~ Doris Lessing
Politics And War quotes by Doris Lessing
The dead were buried above ground, the loose soil heaped around them. The heavy rains of the monsoon months softened the mounds, so that they formed outlines of the bodies within them, as if this small cemetery beside the military airfield were doing its best to resurrect a few of the millions who had died in the war. Here and there an arm or a foot protruded from the graves, the limbs of restless sleepers struggling beneath their brown quilts. ~ J.G. Ballard
Politics And War quotes by J.G. Ballard
The war could kill the faith in him, too, if he was not strong or careful enough. He could feel it fluttering within him sometimes, a bird in a cage of knives. Its own blood on its face and wings. ~ Brian Francis Slattery
Politics And War quotes by Brian Francis Slattery
Concurrently, the growing class power and public voice of conservative and liberal well-to-do black folks easily obscures the class cruelty these individuals enact both in the way they talk about underprivileged blacks and the way they represent them. The existence of that class cruelty and its fascist dimensions have been somewhat highlighted by the efforts of privileged-class blacks to censor the voices of black youth, particularly gangsta rappers who are opposing bourgeois class values by extolling the values of street culture and street vernacular. Significantly, the attack on urban underclass black youth culture and its gangster dimensions (glamorization of crime, etc.) is usually presented via a critique of sexism. Since most privileged-class blacks have shown no interest in advancing feminist politics, the only organized effort to end sexism and sexist oppression, this attack on sexism seems merely gratuitous, a smoke screen that deflects away from the fact that what really disturbs bourgeois folks is the support of rebellion, unruly behavior, and disrespect for their class values. In reality, they and their white counterparts fear the power these young folks have to change the minds and life choices of youth from privileged classes. If only underclass black folks were listening to gangsta rap, there would be no public effort to silence and censor this music. The fear is that it will generate class rebellion. ~ Bell Hooks
Politics And War quotes by Bell Hooks
On January 18, 1915, six months into the First World War, as all Europe was convulsed by killing and dying, Virginia Woolf wrote in her journal, 'The future is dark, which is on the whole, the best thing the future can be, I think.' Dark, she seems to be saying, as in inscrutable, not as in terrible. We often mistake the one for the other. Or we transform the future's unknowability into something certain, the fulfillment of all our dread, the place beyond which there is no way forward. Be again and again, far stranger things happen than the end of the world. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Politics And War quotes by Rebecca Solnit
It was in Bethlehem, actually, that Yonatan found his Arab, a handsome man who used his first wish for peace. His name was Munir; he was fat with a big white mustache. Superphotogenic. It was moving, the way he said it. Yoni knew even as he was filming that this guy would be his promo for sure.
Either him or that Russian. The one with the faded tattoos that Yoni had met in Jaffa. The one that looked straight into the camera and said, if he ever found a talking goldfish, he wouldn't ask of it a single thing. He'd just stick it on a shelf in a big glass jar and talk to him all day, it didn't matter about what. Maybe sports, maybe politics, whatever a goldfish was interested in chatting about.
Anything, the Russian said, not to be alone. ~ Etgar Keret
Politics And War quotes by Etgar Keret
Our brave men and women have made many sacrifices in just wars to defeat the forces of evil. We have exported our greatest values: freedom and opportunity, which have lifted millions out of poverty. At home, these values allow Americans to use their God-given potential and make their dreams reality. ~ Marco Rubio
