Show Us, Don't Tell Us ~ Miles Anthony Smith
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Miles Anthony Smith
I think that life has taught us that you don't have to have the crown to be the queen. ~ Anthony Williams
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Williams
EVERY WEDNESDAY, I teach an introductory fiction workshop at Harvard University, and on the first day of class I pass out a bullet-pointed list of things the students should try hard to avoid. Don't start a story with an alarm clock going off. Don't end a story with the whole shebang having been a suicide note. Don't use flashy dialogue tags like intoned or queried or, God forbid, ejaculated. Twelve unbearably gifted students are sitting around the table, and they appreciate having such perimeters established. With each variable the list isolates, their imaginations soar higher. They smile and nod. The mood in the room is congenial, almost festive with learning. I feel like a very effective teacher; I can practically hear my course-evaluation scores hitting the roof. Then, when the students reach the last point on the list, the mood shifts. Some of them squint at the words as if their vision has gone blurry; others ask their neighbors for clarification. The neighbor will shake her head, looking pale and dejected, as if the last point confirms that she should have opted for that aseptic-surgery class where you operate on a fetal pig. The last point is: Don't Write What You Know.

The idea panics them for two reasons. First, like all writers, the students have been encouraged, explicitly or implicitly, for as long as they can remember, to write what they know, so the prospect of abandoning that approach now is disorienting. Second, they know an awful lot. In recent wo ~ Bret Anthony Johnston
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Bret Anthony Johnston
I am able to play monsters well. I understand monsters. I understand madmen. ~ Anthony Hopkins
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Hopkins
I've been composing music all my life and if I'd been clever enough at school I would like to have gone to music college. ~ Anthony Hopkins
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Hopkins
My brain and body and nervous system, they see a plane ride, a long plane trip, as an opportunity to sleep with nothing coming in, nothing to do. I just go offline the minute I'm on the plane. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Bourdain
Goodbye, goodbye, may Bog forgive you for a ruined life. Then I got on to the sill, the music blasting away to my left, and I shut my glazzies and felt the cold wind on my listo, then I jumped. ~ Anthony Burgess
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Burgess
Dreams go by opposites I was once told. ~ Anthony Burgess
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Burgess
In fact, so far as 'love' was concerned, I had been living for some years past in a rather makeshift manner. This was not because I felt the matter to be of little interest, like a man who hardly cares what he eats provided hunger is satisfied, or one prepared to discuss painting, should the subject arise, though never tempted to enter a picture gallery. On the contrary, my interest in love was keen enough, but the thing itself seemed not particularly simple to come by. ~ Anthony Powell
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Powell
It's also very important in Latin America. If we can deal with the drug problem there, some of their strife there, it's less likely we have immigration problems here. ~ Anthony Weiner
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Weiner
You don't say, I'm going to be a writer when I grow up - at least I didn't. ~ Anthony Doerr
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Doerr
It could be said that the discovery of ourselves is at the heart of what we call enlightenment, which is to say that that big, bright light at the end of the tunnel is us. The problem is that no one wants to discover that we're no better or no worse than the rest - indeed, to discover that we're no different than the rest - because that's no fun. ~ Anthony Marais
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Marais
In all likelihood, Sonja had more academic journal subscriptions than friends. She could explain advanced calculus to her fifth-form algebra teacher but couldn't tell a joke to a boy at lunch. ~ Anthony Marra
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Marra
I've been really fortunate in that I guess I was hired to do 'A Cook's Tour;' I was already a known quantity, meaning I had written a really obnoxious book and nobody expected me to be anyone that I wasn't already. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Bourdain
Unless one is a genius, it is best to aim at being intelligible. ~ Anthony Hope
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Hope
There is always an element of unreality, perhaps even of slight absurdity, about someone you love. ~ Anthony Powell
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Powell
In Europe an actor is an artist. In Hollywood, if he isn't working, he's a bum. ~ Anthony Quinn
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Quinn
Beware of creating tedium! ~ Anthony Trollope
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Trollope
Love can either be your greatest companion or your worst enemy, depending on your pride to accept or deny things. ~ Anthony Liccione
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Liccione
The product of my imagination is the sum of all of my fears. ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
It was important to me to be cool as a comedian. I didn't want to be a crowd-pleaser who sent out the vibe of, "I need you guys." I wanted to be so cool that the audience could leave and I would still be killing, that I didn't want to have to rely on them or need them. That really appealed to me. ~ Anthony Jeselnik
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Jeselnik
He says, "This hotel is very cheap, ma cherie. The innkeeper behind the desk said our room was forty francs a night but only twenty francs if we made our own bed." He listens to her breathe. "So I said, 'Oh, we can make our own bed.' And he said, 'Right, I'll get you some nails and wood.'"
Marie-Laure still does not smile. ~ Anthony Doerr
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Doerr
But are no other portraits necessary? Should we not be taught to see the men and women among whom we really live, - men and women such as we are ourselves, - in order that we should know what are the exact failings which oppress ourselves, and thus learn to hate, and if possible to avoid in life the faults of character which in life are hardly visible, but which in portraiture of life can be made to be so transparent. ~ Anthony Trollope
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Trollope
Our nation needs the BRAC process. No institution can remain successful if it does not adapt to its constantly changing environment. Our armed forces must adapt to changing global threats, evolving technology and new strategies and structures. ~ Anthony Principi
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Principi
To fatten a pig, a farmer will feed him well. The pig must think his life a paradise, never knowing he gorges himself so that he will be fatter for the knife later on. ~ David Anthony Durham
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by David Anthony Durham
There is no clear or meaningful difference between insurgency and civil war, or between national terrorism and civil war for that matter. ~ Anthony H. Cordesman
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony H. Cordesman
We are not born with a need for knowledge, but a hunger for it. Eve bit the apple and it has been gluttony ever since. ~ Anthony Marais
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Marais
The First Amendment is very important, but it's not everything. ~ Anthony Lewis
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Lewis
Nothing has changed but my attitude, therefore, everything has changed. ~ Anthony De Mello
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony De Mello
All those predictions about how much economic growth will be created by this, all of those new jobs, would be created by the things we wanted - the extension of unemployment insurance and middle class tax cuts. An estate tax for millionaires adds exactly zero jobs. A tax cut for billionaires - virtually none. ~ Anthony Weiner
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Weiner
I managed to reach a depth of self-loathing that usually takes a night of drinking to achieve. ~ Anthony Bourdain
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Bourdain
She greeted him with a smile, holding her hand out for him to kiss (...) Nevertheless he went to one knee and pressed his lips against her knuckles. Her flesh was warmer than he'd expected and he angered himself for enjoying the sensation. ~ Anthony Ryan
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Anthony Ryan
A brother renounced the world and gave his goods to the poor, but he kept back a little for his personal expenses. He went to see Abba Anthony. When he told him this, the old man said to him, 'If you want to be a monk, go into the village, buy some meat, cover your naked body with it and come here like that.' The brother did so, and the dogs and birds tore at his flesh. When he came back the old man asked him whether he had followed his advice. He showed him his wounded body, and Saint Anthony said, 'Those who renounce the world but want to keep something for themselves are torn in this way by the demons who make war on them. ~ Saint Antony Of Egypt
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Saint Antony Of Egypt
I am inspired by those who dedicate their lives to bringing about positive social change throughout the world. ~ Ian Anthony Dale
Pogorelc Anthony quotes by Ian Anthony Dale
I tried acting, liked it, and stuck with it. I saw it as the way I would keep that promise to myself of getting back at those who had made my school life a misery. ~ Anthony Hopkins
