What I feel is that the picture-taking process, anyway a greater part of it, is an intuitive thing. You can't go out and logically plan a picture, but when you come back, reason then takes over and verifies or rejects whatever you've done. So that's why I say that reason and intuition are not in conflict-they strengthen each other. ~ Wynn Bullock
Picture Taking quotes by Wynn Bullock
We have become a nation of Kodachrome, Nikon, Instamatic addicts. But we haven't yet developed a clear idea of the ethics of picture-taking ... Where do we get the right to bring other people home in a canister? Where did we lose the right to control our image? ~ Ellen Goodman
Picture Taking quotes by Ellen Goodman
At the same time, new concepts and abstractions flow into the picture, taking up the task of describing the universe without reference to such time or space - abstractions for which our language lacks adequate terms. ~ Benjamin Whorf
Picture Taking quotes by Benjamin Whorf
Sitting for a picture is morbid business. A portrait doesn't begin to mean anything until the subject is dead. This is the whole point. We're doing this to create a kind of sentimental past for people in decades to come. It's their past, their history we're inventing here. And it's not how I look now that matters. It's how I'll look in twenty-five years as clothing and faces change, as photographs change. The deeper I pass into death, the more powerful my picture becomes. Isn't this why picture-taking is so ceremonial? It's like a wake. And I'm the actor made up for the laying-out. ~ Don DeLillo
Picture Taking quotes by Don DeLillo
Picture-taking is an ensemble art - like theater. ~ Ansel Elgort
Picture Taking quotes by Ansel Elgort
You'll notice that my books offer great variety. Some are for adults, some for children and some for teens. There are mysteries, historical novels, picture books, love stories and stories of crisis and courage. ~ Sonia Levitin
Picture Taking quotes by Sonia Levitin
I suppose all moms have an idea who they hope their daughters will be. Like a connect-the-dots picture where you think you know what shape it will become. But then it's the daughter who draws the lines, and she might connect the dots you didn't intend, making a whole different picture. So I've gotta trust the dots she's given me, and she's gotta trust me to draw the picture myself. ~ Laura Lee Gulledge
Picture Taking quotes by Laura Lee Gulledge
Some have said that if you take a great picture in color and take away the color, you'll have a great black-and-white picture. But if you're shooting something about color and you take away the color, you'll have nothing. ~ Jay Maisel
Picture Taking quotes by Jay Maisel
He had a way of taking Buck's head roughly between his hands, and resting his own head upon Buck's, of shaking him back and forth, the while calling him ill names that to Buck were love names. Buck knew no greater joy than that rough embrace and the sound of murmured oaths, and at each jerk back and forth it seemed that his heart would be shaken out of his body so great was its ecstasy. ~ Jack London
Picture Taking quotes by Jack London
And taking care of somebody else made me feel good. Like discovering you're more than you thought you were. More even than you hoped to be. ~ Bette Greene
Picture Taking quotes by Bette Greene
Pro bono has been abused as a cover and I detest those who do that because pro bono is such a noble thing to do. I have done a lot of pro bono work from the time I started my practice, never boasted about it, never got much publicity out of it. But every time when I see some people being interviewed regarding their pro bono work, I laugh because even the Government is coming into the picture. They had considered forcing all lawyers to do pro bono work. Pro bono is something that comes from your heart. You should have the desire to help. It should not be forced upon you. The authorities don't realise this. The moment you force pro bono on lawyers, you take away the meaning of pro bono. Those who are genuinely concerned and do pro bono also will be classified as people who have to do it because they have been told to do so. ~ Subhas Anandan
Picture Taking quotes by Subhas Anandan
Whenever Ingrid and I got out of the suburbs, into Berkeley or San Francisco, and saw how other people lived, Ingrid would cry at the smallest of things- a little boy walking home by himself, a discarded cardboard sign saying HUNGRY PLEASE HELP. She would snap a picture, and by the time she lowered her camera, tears would already be falling. I always felt kind of guilty that I didn't feel as sad as she did, but now, watching Dylan, I think that's probably a good thing. I mean, you see a million terrible things every day, on the news and in the paper, and in real life. I'm not saying that it's stupid to feel sad, just that it would be impossible to let everything get to you and still get some sleep at night. ~ Nina LaCour
Picture Taking quotes by Nina LaCour
I feel like all my faults go into making the person that I am. I like myself as a person. And I think taking any fault away would change who I am as a person. ~ Will Forte
Picture Taking quotes by Will Forte
Pursue Meaning, Not Happiness

Feeling happy is like feeling warm. It's a state of being that feels good. It might sound counterintuitive but focusing directly on pursuing happiness isn't always the best approach to increasing it. This parallels the idea that focusing on reducing anxiety isn't always the best way to decrease it.
What's an alternative to focusing on increasing your happiness? A better idea is focusing on pursuing things that feel meaningful. I'm not necessarily suggesting Mother Teresa-type activities. What gives you a sense of meaning could be anything from cooking for your friends to puttering away on projects in your garage.
Pursuing meaning rather than happiness helps you feel calmer when you're not feeling happy in a particular moment. It smooths out the emotional bumps that come with mistakes, failures, and disappointments. There's research showing that stress tends to be harmful only if you believe that it's harmful and that you can't cope with it. It's easier to believe in your capacity to cope with stress if the stress is part of the bigger picture of building a meaningful life.
Experiment: What makes for a meaningful life from your perspective? Skip over what you think you should answer and identify what's actually true for you. ~ Alice Boyes
Picture Taking quotes by Alice Boyes
I didn't set out like, "I'm gonna do this album, and I really want a #1 album." So it wasn't even on my mind like a goal to accomplish ... but as soon as it sunk it that it was an accomplishment, I realized I gotta start acknowledging milestones [I've] accomplished because sometimes you get so caught up in the bigger picture that you gotta stop and notice the steps you take to get to the bigger picture. ~ Ryan Montgomery
Picture Taking quotes by Ryan Montgomery
Say you want to stop snacking at work. Is the reward you're seeking to satisfy your hunger? Or is it to interrupt boredom? If you snack for a brief release, you can easily find another routine - such as taking a quick walk, or giving yourself three minutes on the Internet - that provides the same interruption without adding to your waistline. ~ Charles Duhigg
Picture Taking quotes by Charles Duhigg
In my opinion, it seems like music is taking a bit of a turn. Look at Mumford and Sons, and the Lumineers. It seems like people and music fans are enjoying the more artistic side of music, and that popular music is taking a turn and accepting that, so I appreciate that. ~ Phillip Phillips
Picture Taking quotes by Phillip Phillips
By declaring complete responsibility for being in your cocoon, and total responsibility for leaving. We become trapped when we avoid taking responsibility for the conditions in our lives. We're trapped further by blaming others for lack of fulfillment, success, and happiness. ~ Doreen Virtue
Picture Taking quotes by Doreen Virtue
Wayne: I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them ... the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves ... I'm quite sure that the concept of a Government-run reservation ... seems to be what the socialists are working for now
to have everyone cared for from cradle to grave ... But you can't whine and bellyache 'cause somebody else got a break and you didn't, like those Indians are. We'll all be on a reservation soon if the socialists keep subsidizing groups like them with our tax money. ~ John Wayne
Picture Taking quotes by John Wayne
I liked taking the elements of roadside advertising out of context because it removes the imperative and just goes to the essence of it - the pure heart of advertising. ~ Stanley Donwood
Picture Taking quotes by Stanley Donwood
The world is filled to suffocating. Man has placed his token on every stone. Every word, every image, is leased and mortgaged. We know that a picture is but a space in which a variety of images, none of them original, blend and clash. ~ Sherrie Levine
Picture Taking quotes by Sherrie Levine
We are 'tribals,' Yadeen and me from the Thak heartland, and Hulak, from the grass country north of Jindazhen," she told him. "We use the magic taught by our tribes and academic magic. Book magic. The masters who sneer are too blind to realize the gods and the immortals use no books. They think tribal magic is on the same level as hedge-witchery. They will mock you and do their best to shut you out of their oh-so-learned circles if you admit to taking other magics seriously. Lindhall is all right, and your other teachers. But be careful around the likes of Chioké and Girisunika. If you want to move up in Carthak, you stay clean of the stain of tribal magic. ~ Tamora Pierce

Try this exercise:

Make a list of whatever is going wrong in your life, from the biggest events to the most trivial items, and then beside that list write down everything and everyone you want to blame for that particular problem. For instance, let's say you think you're too fat. If you want to blame it on McDonald's cheeseburgers, then write that down. Perhaps you just don't normally feel well. If you want to blame that feeling on a bad doctor or on the pollen in the air, then write that down. Maybe you can't find a suitable partner. If you want to blame that on the argument that "men are creeps," then write that down.

Now look at your list. Ask yourself if you are any different now that you know exactly what or who to blame, and then ask yourself if that has helped you come up with a more constructive program to solve your problems.

Not a very positive picture, is it? Wouldn't it be better simply to decide to eliminate all blame from your life and focus instead on what you can do to rid yourself of the unhappiness that afflicts you? Wouldn't it be better to evaluate all the stones that you are carrying in your own bag of life--your stones of resentment, anger, and spite?

Blaming will not change you. It only gives you some shallow justification for continuing to look outside yourself, rather than turning inward and rebuilding your life. ~ Art E. Berg
Picture Taking quotes by Art E. Berg
The world doesn't need another opinion, they need another person taking action. So I take action because I see the call and respond. ~ Will.i.am
Picture Taking quotes by Will.i.am
A lot of my work with the financial and helping my workers involves taking them back to their past life and helping them to understand this past. ~ Doreen Virtue
Picture Taking quotes by Doreen Virtue
They could get under the surface and sink in and lay hooks and you weren't even aware they were doing it. Until one day, you needed or they needed to pull away. And the hooks got pulled, taking a healthy chunk of you with them, leaving you missing pieces that had been whole before. It ~ Jessica Gadziala

I had my whole life planned.. I knew exactly where it was taking me.. ~ Sara Gruen
Picture Taking quotes by Sara Gruen
Only on a few occasions had I ever been comfortable showing my body off, and now here I was, taking a job where Asian boobs and ass ran free. ~ Teresa Lo
Picture Taking quotes by Teresa Lo
This Henry lived in Edinburgh, making him inaccessible and giving her something to do on the weekends - 'Oh, just flying up to Scotland, Henry's taking me fishing,' which is the kind of thing she imagined people doing in Scotland - she always thought of the Queen Mother, incongruous in mackintosh and waders, standing in the middle of a shallow brown river (somewhere on the outskirts of Brigadoon, no doubt) and casting a line for trout. ~ Kate Atkinson
Picture Taking quotes by Kate Atkinson
You know a shooter when you see it. At least the creative people do. If a picture isn't obvious in the first draft you're kind of screwed. ~ William Monahan
Picture Taking quotes by William Monahan
What does it mean to be grounded? It means no unkind being is taking up space rent free in your body. It also means you love deeply without need for revenge. It means digging beneath the machine mind to understand and see the beauty in each human being. ~ Deborah Bravandt
Picture Taking quotes by Deborah Bravandt
A picture that is beautiful, or that comes off, or that works, looks as if it was all made at one stroke. ~ Helen Frankenthaler
Picture Taking quotes by Helen Frankenthaler
I hear you have a birthday today."
Sally laughed. "I don't know where you could have possibly heard that."
"It might have been from a certain blonde running around the mansion reminding everyone of the party of the century taking place in honor of, and I quote, 'the most bad ass gypsy healer known to man', which was followed up with a, 'no offense to Rachel, but fact is fact. ~ Quinn Loftis
Picture Taking quotes by Quinn Loftis
Every picture of you is when you were younger. ~ Mitch Hedberg
Picture Taking quotes by Mitch Hedberg
For once, fate us taking a problem off our hands gratis. Let's smile, say thank you and stay the hell out of it! ~ Karen Chance
Picture Taking quotes by Karen Chance
You should never use the camera to make your pictures. You use yourself, your experience to make the picture with the camera. Not the other way around. ~ Antonin Kratochvil
Picture Taking quotes by Antonin Kratochvil
Fear drove many on deck that were used to avoiding the night winds and the spray. Some thought the vessel could not live through the night, and it seemed less dreadful to stand out in the midst of the wild tempest and see the peril that threatened than to be shut up in the sepulchral cabins, under the dim lamps, and imagine the horrors that were abroad on the ocean. And once out - once where they could see the ship struggling in the strong grasp of the storm - once where they could hear the shriek of the winds and face the driving spray and look out upon the majestic picture the lightnings disclosed, they were prisoners to a fierce fascination they could not resist, and so remained. It was a wild night - and a very, very long one. ~ Mark Twain
Picture Taking quotes by Mark Twain
The reason some people see the world so differently from others is that the human brain doesn't just take a picture of the external world like a camera; it is constantly interpreting and processing the information it receives. ~ Shawn Achor
Picture Taking quotes by Shawn Achor
I have to always make sure I don't stay in one place and spend too much time one subject. I have my wife tell me [through an earpiece], "Come back! You're taking too long on that subject." I need to be reeled in. ~ Mike Tyson
