Language as a Prison

The Philippines did have a written language before the Spanish colonists arrived, contrary to what many of those colonists subsequently claimed. However, it was a language that some theorists believe was mainly used as a mnemonic device for epic poems. There was simply no need for a European-style written language in a decentralized land of small seaside fishing villages that were largely self-sufficient.

One theory regarding language is that it is primarily a useful tool born out of a need for control. In this theory written language was needed once top-down administration of small towns and villages came into being. Once there were bosses there arose a need for written language. The rise of the great metropolises of Ur and Babylon made a common written language an absolute necessity - but it was only a tool for the administrators. Administrators and rulers needed to keep records and know names - who had rented which plot of land, how many crops did they sell, how many fish did they catch, how many children do they have, how many water buffalo? More important, how much then do they owe me? In this account of the rise of written language, naming and accounting seem to be language's primary "civilizing" function. Language and number are also handy for keeping track of the movement of heavenly bodies, crop yields, and flood cycles. Naturally, a version of local oral languages was eventually translated into symbols as well, and nonadmi ~ David Byrne
Philosophy Of Language quotes by David Byrne
Don't be afraid of a little metaphor; it won't bite you, but you should always make sure you know how to cash it in for unvarnished fact when you feel the urge. ~ Daniel C. Dennett
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Daniel C. Dennett
In philosophy we must always resist the temptation of hitting on an answer to the question how we can define such-and-such a notion, an answer which supplies a smooth and elegant definition which entirely ignores the purpose which we originially wanted the notion for. ~ Michael Dummett
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Michael Dummett
The world of physics is essentially the real world construed by mathematical abstractions, and the world of sense is the real world construed by the abstractions which the sense-organs immediately furnish. To suppose that the "material mode" is a primitive and groping attempt at physical conception is a fatal error in epistemology. ~ Susanne K. Langer
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Susanne K. Langer
As a scholar I am interested in the philosophy of language, semiotics, call it what you want, and one of the main features of the human language is the possibility of lying. ~ Umberto Eco
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Umberto Eco
The Vedic viewpoint presents a type of linguistic realism in which reality is the 'text' which is being processed by the observer. Reality can also be modified by adding text to it similar to how a programmer programs a computer by inputting a computer program. ~ Ashish Dalela
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Ashish Dalela
It is a tragicomic fact that our proper upbringing has become an ally of the secret police. ( ... ) The "Tell the truth!" imperative drummed into us so automatically that we feel ashamed of lying even to a secret policeman. ~ Milan Kundera
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Milan Kundera
Any person is an adept time traveler, if they love people, rejoice in nature, their working charter is to be kind, ethical, compassionate, and they live to preserve the dignity and reduce the pain of other people. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
Google's objective is to organize the world's information and to make it accessible. Unicode plays a central role in this effort because it is the principal means by which content in every language can be represented in a form that can be processed by software. As Unicode extends its coverage of the world's languages, it helps Google accomplish its mission. ~ Vinton Cerf
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Vinton Cerf
You are the universe, so see the beauty of nature and feel the joy of life. ~ Debasish Mridha
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Debasish Mridha
A basic language-literacy of Nature is falling from us. And what is being lost along with this literacy is something perhaps even more valuable: a kind of language-magic, the power that certain words possess to enchant our imaginative relations with Nature and landscape. ~ Robert Macfarlane
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Robert Macfarlane
When you sleep with the devil be careful that he doesn't leave the seed of a demon inside of you. ~ Anthony T. Hincks
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Anthony T. Hincks
I hope death will be a great happiness, a happiness as great as that of love, fulfilled love ~ Hermann Hesse
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Hermann Hesse
I think each of my books attempts to create its own voice so I'm not even sure I have a signature style, other than certain descriptive tendencies, an interest in the sound of language. Maybe an immersion in place. ~ Paul Lisicky
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Paul Lisicky
Does a man who is acting on the stage in a female part forget that he is a man? Similarly, we too must play our parts on the stage of life, but we must not identify ourselves with those parts. ~ Ramana Maharshi
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Ramana Maharshi
Mighty waves of oceans live in my soul to encourage me to survive. ~ Harshada Pathare

To millions of children, a condom is nothing but a balloon. ~ Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Mokokoma Mokhonoana
Roosevelt's humor was broad, his manner friendly. Of wit there was little; of philosophy, none. What did he possess? Intuition, inspiration, love of adventure. ~ Emanuel Celler
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Emanuel Celler
We cannot judge someone based on reading just one chapter of their life. ~ Avijeet Das
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Avijeet Das
Mastery of language affords remarkable power. ~ Frantz Fanon
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Frantz Fanon
I am only about half alive a large part of my strength is consumed in sitting up or walking. My nervous system is a shattered wreck, and I am absolutely bored & listless save when I come upon something which peculiarly interests me. However so many things do interest me, & interest me intensely, in science, history, philosophy, & literature; that I have never actually desired to die, or entertained any suicidal designs, as might be expected of one with so little kinship to the ordinary features of life. ~ H.P. Lovecraft
Philosophy Of Language quotes by H.P. Lovecraft
My English text is chaste, and all licentious passages are left in the decent obscurity of a learned language. ~ Edward Gibbon
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Edward Gibbon
I love to dream of a future, filled with peace, love, joy, and laughter. ~ Debasish Mridha
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Debasish Mridha
The language of religion can alone suit every situation and every mode of feeling. ~ Madame De Stael
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Madame De Stael
Let certain things be uncertain.
Appreciate the puzzle that life is,
insofar as I know, after a scheme of steps,
all Crosswords have a solution,
and every Sudoku makes a lot of sense. ~ Jasleen Kaur Gumber
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Jasleen Kaur Gumber
Liberalism is the philosophy for our time, because it does not try to conserve every tradition of the past, because it does not apply to new problems the old doctrinaire solutions, because it is prepared to experiment and innovate and because it knows that the past is less important than the future. ~ Pierre Trudeau
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Pierre Trudeau
A daring faith, a willing spirit. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
Of all men only those who find time for philosophy are at leisure, only they are truly alive; for it is not only their own lifetime they guard well; they add every age to their own; all the years that have passed before them they requisition for their store. ~ Seneca.
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Seneca.
I believe it is essential to have English as the official language of our National Government, for the English language is the tie that binds the millions of immigrants who come to America from divergent backgrounds. We should, and do, encourage immigrants to maintain and share their traditions, customs and religions, but the use of English is essential for immigrants and their children to participate fully in American society and achieve the American dream. ~ Jim Sensenbrenner
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Jim Sensenbrenner
Only by externalization, by entering into social relationships, can we develop the interiority of our own person. ~ Jurgen Habermas
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Jurgen Habermas
Be simple enough to feel the true joy of life. ~ Debasish Mridha
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Debasish Mridha
I thought again about throwing language all over a scene, wondered if the emotional mystery of one's response to place doesn't lie in the inchoate play of possible words, of felt meanings and poetries, of the sublime, the romantic, the picturesque, Zen; even, perhaps, something new. And perhaps that twinge of disappointment one always feels at the words chosen - and thus also at the glorious scene-comes from the dream that in that instant of indecision and all-decision before your mind clarified its response to beauty, you just might have held within you language finally saturated with all the earth's meaning." Philosophy Of Language quotes by Daniel Duane
A nationalist will blindly follow his country to his death out of love for it. A patriot will stand up for and even against his country to his death out of love for it. ~ Janvier Chouteu-Chando
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Janvier Chouteu-Chando
We climbed this hill. Each step up we could see farther, so of course we kept going. Now we're at the top. Science has been at the top for a few centuries now. And we look out across the plain and we see this other tribe dancing around above the clouds, even higher than we are. Maybe it's a mirage, maybe it's a trick. Or maybe they just climbed a higher peak we can't see because the clouds are blocking the view. So we head off to find out - but every step takes us downhill. No matter what direction we head, we can't move off our peak without losing our vantage point. So we climb back up again. We're trapped on a local maximum. But what if there is a higher peak out there, way across the plain? The only way to get there is to bite the bullet, come down off our foothill and trudge along the riverbed until we finally start going uphill again. And it's only then you realize: Hey, this mountain reaches way higher than that foothill we were on before, and we can see so much better from up here. But you can't get there unless you leave behind all the tools that made you so successful in the first place. You have to take that first step downhill. ~ Peter Watts
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Peter Watts
It is far, far better never to have been beautiful.
If you're gorgeous you're going to get by absolutely fine everyone will always want you in the room and you'll be lavished with attention, which you'll do very little to earn. Whereas, if you look like a sack of offal thats been dropkicked down a lift-shaft into a pond, you're going to spend many of your formative years alone. this may seem miserable - but you'll have space, space that you can constructively use to discover and hone your skills, learn a language, develop an interest in cosmology, practice the oboe, do whatever you fancy, really, so long as it doesn't involve being looked at or snogging anyone. And you'll very likely emerge from your chrysalis aged twenty-five as a highly accomplished young thing ready to take on the world. meanwhile, The Beautiful Ones will have been so busy having boyfriends and brushing their hair that they'll just be ... who they always were. ~ Miranda Hart
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Miranda Hart
Imagine you live on a planet where the dominant species is far more intellectually sophisticated than human beings but often keeps humans as companion animals. They are called the Gorns. They communicate with each other via a complex combination of telepathy, eye movements & high-pitched squeaks, all completely unintelligible & unlearnable by humans, whose brains are prepared for verbal language acquisition only.

Humans sometimes learn the meaning of individual sounds by repeated association with things of relevance to them. The Gorns & humans bond strongly but there are many Gorn rules that humans must try to assimilate with limited information & usually high stakes. You are one of the lucky humans who lives with the Gorns in their dwelling. Many other humans are chained to small cabanas in the yard or kept in outdoor pens of varying size. They are so socially starved they cannot control their emotions when a Gorn goes near them. The Gorns agree that they could never be House-Humans.

The dwelling you share with your Gorn family is filled with water-filled porcelain bowls.Every time you try to urinate in one, nearby Gorn attack you. You learn to only use the toilet when there are no Gorns present. Sometimes they come home & stuff your head down the toilet for no apparent reason. You hate this & start sucking up to the Gorns when they come home to try & stave this off but they view this as evidence of your guilt. You are also ~ Jean Donaldson
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Jean Donaldson
Revelation and the nature of truth must be viewed in reference to the structure of language. ~ Kenneth L. Pike
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Kenneth L. Pike
Language is the most extraordinary invention in the history of humanity, the one which came before everything and which makes it possible to share everything. ~ J M G Le Clezio
Philosophy Of Language quotes by J M G Le Clezio
I became an expert in the language of fear. Couples locked arms or reached for each others' hands when they saw me. Some crossed to the other side of the street. People who were on conversations went mute and stared straight ahead, as though avoiding my eyes would save them .. I'd been walking the streets grinning good evening at people who were frightened to death of me. I did violence to them by just being - Brent Staples ~ Claude M. Steele
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Claude M. Steele
Drink deep the cup of life; take it's dark wine into your soul. For it passes round the table only once. ~ Jack McDevitt
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Jack McDevitt
To touch a person ... to sleep with a person ... is to become a pioneer," she whispered then, "a frontiersman at the edge of their private world, the strange, incomprehensible world of their interior, filled with customs you could never imitate, a language which sounds like your own but is really totally foreign, knowable only to them. ~ Catherynne M Valente
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Catherynne M Valente
A desire to believe (despite all evidence to the contrary) that words are at bottom the names of things is what makes the translator's mission seem so impossible. ~ David Bellos
Philosophy Of Language quotes by David Bellos
Not all, what happens, happens because of fate. Something is in our hands. ~ Carneades
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Carneades
I regret that some on the extreme right have been so critical of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and have adamantly opposed the naming of a successor who shares her judicial philosophy and qualities. And their criticism actually reflects poorly upon them. ~ Patrick Leahy
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Patrick Leahy
Looking back at the recent history of the world, I find it amazing how far civilization has retrogressed so quickly. As recently as World War I - granted the rules were violated at times - we had a set of rules of warfare in which armies didn't make war against civilians: Soldiers fought soldiers. Then came World War II and Hitler's philosophy of total war, which meant the bombing not only of soldiers but of factories that produced their rifles, and, if surrounding communities were also hit, that was to be accepted; then, as the war progressed, it became common for the combatants simply to attack civilians as part of military strategy. By the time the 1980s rolled around, we were placing our entire faith in a weapon whose fundamental target was the civilian population. ~ Ronald Reagan
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Ronald Reagan
It is easy to see the glow but hard to recognize the awakening of silence. ~ Dejan Stojanovic
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Dejan Stojanovic
The Kantian philosophy is no more than at best a half-secularized version of such a theocratic ethics, with "Reason" in the place of God. This does not amount to much more than a change of names. ~ Raymond Geuss
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Raymond Geuss
One of the striking aspects of the lines is the way they make us see a tree, with its pattern of twigs, leaves and branches, as a visual image of the invisible roots of language. ~ Terry Eagleton
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Terry Eagleton
Those who don't understand any language other than the language of force and violence don't respect human dignity. They seek violence because they will be irrelevant without it. We should not go their way. ~ Shirin Ebadi
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Shirin Ebadi
Our mouths were fluent in the language of each other and we moved with one mind and shared the same breath. ~ Michelle Hodkin
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Michelle Hodkin
The knowledge of your destiny is available to you, well before
it actually happens, as a message streaming continuously from
your heart to your brain, written in the language of longing. ~ Martha Beck
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Martha Beck
You're not like any man I've ever known," she said. "You're not even someone I could have dreamed. You're like someone from a fairy story written in a language I don't even know."
"The prince, I hope."
"No, you're the dragon, a beautiful wicked dragon." Her voice turned wistful. "How could anyone have a normal everyday life with you?" Cam took her in a safe, firm grip and lowered her to the mattress. "Maybe you'll be a civilizing influence on me." He bent over the slope of her breast, kissing it through the muslin veil of her gown. "Or maybe you'll get a taste for the dragon." He found the bud of her nipple, wet the cotton with his mouth, until the tender flesh pricked up against his tongue.
"I th-think I already have." She sounded so perturbed that he laughed. "Then lie still," he whispered, "while I breathe fire on you. ~ Lisa Kleypas
Philosophy Of Language quotes by Lisa Kleypas
An empirical philosophy is in any case a kind of intellectual disrobing. We cannot permanently divest ourselves of the intellectual habits we take on and wear when we assimilate the culture of our own time and place. But intelligent furthering of culture demands that we take some of them off, that we inspect them critically to see what they are made of and what wearing them does to us. We cannot achieve recovery of primitive naïveté. But there is attainable a cultivated naïveté of eye, ear and thought. ~ John Dewey
