The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and is in fact the most precious and valuable possession of mankind ~ Theodorus Gaza
Pet Animals quotes by Theodorus Gaza
No one in the world needs a mink coat but a mink. ~ Murray Banks
Pet Animals quotes by Murray Banks
It is difficult to obtain the friendship of a cat. It is a philosophical animal ... one that does not place its affections thoughtlessly. ~ Theophile Gautier
Pet Animals quotes by Theophile Gautier
A horse gallops with his lungs, perseveres with his heart, and wins with his character. ~ Federico Tesio
Pet Animals quotes by Federico Tesio
Traveling on, the shaft of his light reached now a great, dully shining oblong, and he stopped, surprised. Then, through the glass sides, he saw bright shapes of fish wheel in schools down the opaque water, startled by the illumination. Coming at last, and so suddenly, on life like his own, Mr. Lecky moved closer. The fixed flood of his light enveloped these small fish dimly, glowed back on him. They came sliding, drifting, mouths in motion, gills rippling, up the light, against the glass. Their senseless round eyes stared at Mr. Lecky. Idling with great grace, the extravagant products of selective breeding - fringetails, Korean, calico - passed, swayed about, came languidly back. Moving faster, stub-finned, crop-tailed danios from the Malabar coast appeared, hovered, taking the light on their fat flanks, now spotted, now iridescent pearl or opal.

Seeing so many of them, so eager and attentive, Mr. Lecky felt an unexpected compunction. He was their only proprietor; and soon, trapped unnaturally here in the big tank, they would starve to death. His light went back to a counter he had just passed, showing him again the half-noticed packages - food for birds and pet animals, food, too, for fish. Returning to the tank, his light found many of the fish still waiting, the rest rushing back. He went and took a package, tore the top off, and poured the contents onto the rectangle of open water. It would perhaps postpone the time when, having eaten each other, the sick rema ~ James Gould Cozzens
Pet Animals quotes by James Gould Cozzens
Animals can communicate quite well. And they do. And generally speaking, they are ignored ~ Alice Walker
Pet Animals quotes by Alice Walker
You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his fellow animals. ~ Paul McCartney
Pet Animals quotes by Paul McCartney
Everyone's pet is the most outstanding. This begets mutual blindness. ~ Jean Cocteau
Pet Animals quotes by Jean Cocteau
I love animals and feel very strongly that people should not be allowed to buy a pet if they are not able to look after it. ~ Kirsty Gallacher
Pet Animals quotes by Kirsty Gallacher
Pet stores just sell their animals. ~ Booboo Stewart
Pet Animals quotes by Booboo Stewart
Deerstalking would be a very fine sport if only the deer had guns. ~ W.S. Gilbert
Pet Animals quotes by W.S. Gilbert
Nothing to be done really about animals. Anything you do looks foolish. The answer isn't in us. It's almost as if we're put here on earth to show how silly they aren't. ~ Russell Hoban
Pet Animals quotes by Russell Hoban
Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people. ~ W.C. Fields
Pet Animals quotes by W.C. Fields
You can find three species at any defind area ... Stray animals, pet animals and SOCIAL animals ... I wonder where HUMANS are..!!! ~ Mayank Sharma
Pet Animals quotes by Mayank Sharma
If we have some pet animals, we should feed them also before taking our food. Perceive God in every living being and feed them with that attitude. ~ Mata Amritanandamayi
Pet Animals quotes by Mata Amritanandamayi
Most of the inhabitants of India do not mind how India is governed. Nor are the lower animals of England concerned about England, but in the tropics the indifference is more prominent, the inarticulate world is closer at hand and readier to resume control as soon as men are tired. ~ E. M. Forster
Pet Animals quotes by E. M. Forster
No, I like normal life but I will go crazy if I'm not working. I'll say to my mom, "I'm going crazy! I'm going stir crazy!" I love my house. I love my family. I love my animals. Sometimes, I just want to work whether its on location here in Michigan or back in LA. I just want to work, work, work. It's what I want to do with the rest of my life so, yes, I do go a little bit crazy when I'm not working. ~ Joey King
Pet Animals quotes by Joey King
This is my manifesto. My attempt to nudge people toward something, or back toward something. Toward what? An understanding that most of us already have on a deeper level. That a world exists outside of us. A world that reminds us that we are animals, too, animals who have evolved along with other animals on this earth. Thinking, planning, scheming, talking, writing animals, but animals nonetheless. ~ David Gessner
Pet Animals quotes by David Gessner
To draw for a moment from an entirely different corner of my life, that part of me still attached to the biological sciences, there is ample evidence that animals - rats and monkeys, for example - that are forced into a subordinate status within their social systems adapt their brain chemistry accordingly, becoming 'depressed' in humanlike ways. Their behavior is anxious and withdrawn; the level of serotonin (the neurotransmitter boosted by some antidepressants) declines in their brains. And - what is especially relevant here - they avoid fighting even in self-defense ... My guess is that the indignities imposed on so many low-wage workers - the drug tests, the constant surveillance, being 'reamed out' by managers - are part of what keeps wages low. If you're made to feel unworthy enough, you may come to think that what you're paid is what you are actually worth. ~ Barbara Ehrenreich
Pet Animals quotes by Barbara Ehrenreich
The unchallenged assumption is that humans may use animals for their own purposes, and they may raise and kill them to satisfy their preference for a diet containing animal flesh. ~ Peter Singer
Pet Animals quotes by Peter Singer
Sleeping on the Ceiling
It is so peaceful on the ceiling!
It is the Place de la Concorde.
The little crystal chandelier
is off, the fountain is in the dark.
Not a soul is in the park.
Below, where the wallpaper is peeling,
the Jardin des Plantes has locked its gates.
Those photographs are animals.
The mighty flowers and foliage rustle;
under the leaves the insects tunnel.
We must go under the wallpaper
to meet the insect-gladiator,
to battle with a net and trident,
and leave the fountain and the square.
But oh, that we could sleep up there ... ~ Elizabeth Bishop
Pet Animals quotes by Elizabeth Bishop
As this chapter has shown, we are in the midst of an emergency in which appalling suffering is being inflicted on millions of animals for purposes that on any impartial view are obviously inadequate to justify the suffering. ~ Peter Singer
Pet Animals quotes by Peter Singer
The problem with cats is that they get the same exact look whether they see a moth or an ax-murderer. ~ Paula Poundstone
Pet Animals quotes by Paula Poundstone
First, love comes in all different sizes, shapes, and colors. And can't nobody tell you that however and whichever way you choose to love is wrong. Unless it's with kin or a pet, I seen somethin' like that once and it was just fuckin' gross. ~ Cordelia Michelsen
Pet Animals quotes by Cordelia Michelsen
I talk to trees and animals. We have interesting conversations about food, weather, and love. They sometimes can predict the future. ~ Shan Sa
Pet Animals quotes by Shan Sa
Animals have this way of constantly confronting us with ultimate questions - about truth and falsehood, guilt and innocence, God and sanctity and the soul - forcing us to define ourselves and our relationship to the world. ~ Matthew Scully
Pet Animals quotes by Matthew Scully
I spent a lot of my life - 20 years of it - in war, training army trackers and commanding a tracker unit, and then in the Game Department, tracking lions and elephants and poachers. So I've spent literally thousands of hours tracking people or animals, and training others to do it. ~ Allan Savory
Pet Animals quotes by Allan Savory
If you respect or love animals you could never eat them. It's that simple ~ Steven Morrissey
Pet Animals quotes by Steven Morrissey
Support your right to arm bears. ~ Cleveland Amory
Pet Animals quotes by Cleveland Amory
When a man touches a woman's body, he is not just touching her body. It goes MUCH DEEPER than that for a woman. He is touching parts of her soul-parts as diverse as how she feels about being a grandmother some day, to what is her favorite ice cream, to how much she loves her pet, and to her opinion of how the current President is governing. The man wants a sexual encounter and love is far from his mind; she desires permanence, commitment, safety, and security. ~ Jim Anderson
Pet Animals quotes by Jim Anderson
So, once more, the question is: Does the Bible forbid homosexual behavior? Well, I've already said that it does. The Bible is so realistic! You might not expect it to mention a topic like homosexual behavior, but in fact there are six places in the Bible - three in the Old Testament and three in the New Testament - where this issue is directly addressed - not to mention all the passages dealing with marriage and sexuality which have implications for this issue. In all six of these passages homosexual acts are unequivocally condemned.

In Leviticus 18.22 it says that it is an abomination for a man to lie with another man as with a woman. In Lev. 20.13 the death penalty is prescribed in Israel for such an act, along with adultery, incest, and bestiality. Now sometimes homosexual advocates make light of these prohibitions by comparing them to prohibitions in the Old Testament against having contact with unclean animals like pigs. Just as Christians today don't obey all of the Old Testament ceremonial laws, so, they say, we don't have to obey the prohibitions of homosexual actions. But the problem with this argument is that the New Testament reaffirms the validity of the Old Testament prohibitions of homosexual behavior, as we'll see below. This shows they were not just part of the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament, which were done away with, but were part of God's everlasting moral law. Homosexual behavior is in God's sight a serious sin. The third place where homos ~ William Lane Craig
Pet Animals quotes by William Lane Craig
It took a while to master the right phrases, but once I got him going, old Gilly - boy - he took to it like a knife to a soft back."

"Gilly?" Hadrian asked, laughing.

"A pet has to have a name, doesn't it? Later I'm planning to teach it fetch and roll over, but for now, dig and sic 'em will do ~ Michael J. Sullivan
Pet Animals quotes by Michael J. Sullivan
When animals behave like humans or when humans behave like animals, don't be surprised because in every animal there is a human and in every human there is an animal! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Pet Animals quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Do the gods of different nations talk to each other? ... Is there some annual get-together where they compare each other's worshippers? Mine will bow their faces to the floor and trace woodgrain lines for me, says one. Mine will sacrifice animals, says another. Mine will kill anyone who insults me, says a third. Here is the question I think of most often: Are there any who can honestly boast, My worshippers obey my good laws, and treat each other kindly, and live simple generous lives? ~ Orson Scott Card
Pet Animals quotes by Orson Scott Card
Sticking wires into the brain is obviously rather crude. It's hard to do in animals that run around, and there is a physical limit to the number of wires that can be inserted simultaneously. ~ Gero Miesenbock
Pet Animals quotes by Gero Miesenbock
Winter was usually the slow season at the menagerie, with so many of the animals hibernating, but that year I was busier than a hen with a double set of chicks. ~ Patricia C. Wrede
Pet Animals quotes by Patricia C. Wrede
Which of us has not been stunned by the beauty of an animal's skin or its flexibility in motion? ~ Marianne Moore
Pet Animals quotes by Marianne Moore
The eyes were certainly memorable and beautiful, moist calves' eyes heavily lashed and with the same look of troubled pain at the unpredictability of the world's terrors. ~ P.D. James
Pet Animals quotes by P.D. James
If we wish for mercy ourselves, we must show mercy to all dumb animals. ~ Joyce Lambert
Pet Animals quotes by Joyce Lambert
It struck me that the beauty we attribute to children isn't something they have that we don't. It's something they do, which we have long since stopped doing - just describing things as we see them, the simple, unadorned facts. ~ Christina Carson
Pet Animals quotes by Christina Carson
Drinking when we are not thirsty and making love at all seasons, madam: that is all there is to distinguish us from other animals. ~ Pierre Beaumarchais
Pet Animals quotes by Pierre Beaumarchais
There were a few compensations to having corporeal Aspect. Food (jam tarts were my favourites); drink (mostly wine and mead); setting things on fire; sex (although I was still extremely confused by all the taboos surrounding this - no animals, no siblings, no men, no married women, no demons - frankly, it was amazing to me that anyone had sex at all, with so many rules against it). ~ Joanne Harris
Pet Animals quotes by Joanne Harris
I always pet a dog with my left hand because if he bit me I'd still have my right hand to paint with. ~ Juan Gris
Pet Animals quotes by Juan Gris
When you join the Parachute Regiment they send you on training and initiation exercises. One of the tasks is to accept and care for a pet white rabbit. The young squaddie has to feed, brush, stroke and comfort his rabbit for a week, and become attached to it. Then he has to shoot it. ~ Matthew Parris
Pet Animals quotes by Matthew Parris
The next day, Trixie pawed Maddie awake, patting her arm gently.
"I'm up," Maddie groaned, blinking sleep out of her eyes.
"Mrrow." Trixie peered at her, then gave her a soft nose kiss, her whiskers skimming Maddie's cheeks.
"Thanks, Trixie." The gesture touched Maddie's heart, and she wondered how she'd managed to live without a pet until Trixie came into her life. ~ Jinty James
Pet Animals quotes by Jinty James
The physics of earthquake behavior is mostly independent of scale. A large earthquake is just a scaled-up version of a small earthquake. That distinguishes earthquakes from animals, for example-a ten inch animal must be structured quite differently from a one-inch animal, and a hundred-inch animal needs a different architecture still, if its bones are not to snap under the increased mass. Clouds, on the other hand, are scaling phenomena like earthquakes. Their characteristic irregularity-describable in terms of fractal dimension-changes not at all as they are observed on different scales. That is why air travelers lose all perspective on how far away a cloud is. Without help from cues such as haziness, a cloud twenty feet away can be indistinguishable from two thousand feet away. Indeed, analysis of satellite pictures has shown an invariant fractal dimension in clouds observed from hundreds of miles away. ~ James Gleick
Pet Animals quotes by James Gleick
It's just the way things are. Take a moment to consider this statement. Really think about it. We send one species to the butcher and give our love and kindness to another apparently for no reason other than because it's the way things are. When our attitudes and behaviors towards animals are so inconsistent, and this inconsistency is so unexamined, we can safely say we have been fed absurdities. It is absurd that we eat pigs and love dogs and don't even know why. Many of us spend long minutes in the aisle of the drugstore mulling over what toothpaste to buy. Yet most of don't spend any time at all thinking about what species of animal we eat and why. Our choices as consumers drive an industry that kills ten billion animals per year in the United States alone. If we choose to support this industry and the best reason we can come up with is because it's the way things are, clearly something is amiss. What could cause an entire society of people to check their thinking caps at the door--and to not even realize they're doing so? Though this question is quite complex, the answer is quite simple: carnism. ~ Melanie Joy
Pet Animals quotes by Melanie Joy
Striking in its insistence and durability is the quest or desire for a decisive criterion with which to differentiate humans from other animals as well as the human from the animal in human beings. ~ Dominick LaCapra
Pet Animals quotes by Dominick LaCapra
Circuses are about entertainment and juggling and animals and all that shit. Sideshows are about freaks, about people and the limits of acceptability. We push those limits. If a circus is an escape, Fire said, a sideshow is a confrontation. ~ Chris Abani
Pet Animals quotes by Chris Abani
A man, and a cat, and a dog, are all animals. These particular examples, as man, or dog, or cat, are parts of a bigger and more general concept, animal. The man, and the cat, and the dog, and the plant, and the tree, all come under the still more general concept, life. Again, all these, all beings and all materials, come under the one concept of existence, for we all are in it. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Pet Animals quotes by Swami Vivekananda
I smell panic," said Serge. "These are different animals now. They're starting to winnow out the weak at the fringe of the herd. We need to hurry or this could affect our snack situation. ~ Tim Dorsey
Pet Animals quotes by Tim Dorsey
I'll wash. Looks like brute strength is required."

Matilda wasn't about to argue. Might as well put those ridiculous muscles to good use. "I doubt I could write them into submission somehow."

"No," Tanner agreed, heading to the sink and flicking on the taps, intent on filling the industrial size sink and agitating the water as he squirted in some detergent. "You could, however, write about how I heroically and uncomplainingly scrubbed pots for hours while being witty and charming all at the service of some of the city's less fortunate."

"You want me to add in how woodland animals came in from the alley to befriend you? ~ Amy Andrews
Pet Animals quotes by Amy Andrews
The history of human use of plants, mushrooms, and animals for their psychedelic effects is far older than written history, and probably predates the appearance of the modern human species. ~ Rick Strassman
Pet Animals quotes by Rick Strassman
Every soul on earth is equally precious, even those of plants and animals. If you see love in one area and not another, then you are not reflecting true love for all creatures on earth, only a deficiency in your senses. The light of love sees no walls. ~ Suzy Kassem
Pet Animals quotes by Suzy Kassem
We generally accept that it's natural for carnivorous wild animals to kill other animals in order to live. But people don't often think (or even know) about the extraordinary and unnatural suffering that humans inflict on the animals that we freely harvest for food, with the help of modern high technology and the animal food sciences. ~ Marc Bekoff
Pet Animals quotes by Marc Bekoff
Humans are strange, adaptable animals, and eventually get used to anything, even the impossible or unbearable. ... Terror is tiring, and difficult to keep up indefinitely, so sooner or later it must be replaced with something more practical. ~ Frances Hardinge
Pet Animals quotes by Frances Hardinge
Old friend, there are people - young and old - that I like, and people that I do not like. The former are always in short supply. I am turned off by humorless fanaticism, whether it's revolutionary mumbo-jumbo by a young one, or loud lessons from scripture by and old one. We are all comical, touching, slapstick animals, walking on our hind legs, trying to make it a noble journey from womb to tomb, and the people who can't see it all that way bore hell out of me. ~ John D. MacDonald
Pet Animals quotes by John D. MacDonald
A boy is in search of faith. Such a faith that he went to the forest for it, although it is not always preferable. The God with his entire presence is everywhere, but this boy, he loved the forest. He always thought that the forest is better than the city; free from artificially fabricated environment, free from social animals and full of real animals, whose intentions are very clear, far clearer than the social animals. When they search for prey, they use claws and teeth and jaws and roars, they don't use soft words, fake emotions and false love. ~ Sameem Ul Islam
Pet Animals quotes by Sameem Ul Islam
Vegan With A Vengeance is on my kitchen shelf. This fun and creative book is delicious for people like me, who don't eat pets. ~ Joan Jett
Pet Animals quotes by Joan Jett
Innocence is something to be appreciated, to be understood, to be enjoyed. Like you see animals, they're innocent; you see children, they're innocent; flowers, they're innocent. Divert your attention to all these things. ~ Nirmala Srivastava
Pet Animals quotes by Nirmala Srivastava
Of all the animals on this planet, we are surely the nastiest, the most deceitful, the most murderous and vile. Despite our God, or because of him. Both. ~ Russell Banks
Pet Animals quotes by Russell Banks
I asked "What do you even do with a chimera?"
"What wouldn't you do with a chimera?" Jeff asked. "They're like the Swiss Army knife of animals. ~ Chloe Neill
