Unfortunately, the term "identity politics" has been weaponized. It is most often used by speakers to describe politics as practiced by members of historically marginalized groups. If you're black and you're worried about police brutality, that's identity politics. If you're a woman and you're worried about the male-female pay gap, that's identity politics. But if you're a rural gun owner decrying universal background checks as tyranny, or a billionaire CEO complaining that high tax rates demonize success, or a Christian insisting on Nativity scenes in public squares - well, that just good, old fashioned politics. With a quick sleight of hand, identity becomes something that only marginalized groups have.

The term "identity politics," in this usage, obscures rather than illuminates; it's used to diminish and discredit the concerns of the weaker groups by making them look self-interested, special pleading in order to clear the agenda for the concerns of stronger groups, which are framed as more rational, proper topics for political debate. But in wielding identity as a blade, we have lost it as a lens, blinding ourselves in a bid for political advantage. WE are left searching in vaid for what we refuse to allow ourselves to see. ~ Ezra Klein
Pay Gap quotes by Ezra Klein
To repeat some of the most basic facts: women still do not have the equal political power they have long sought, since only one in five MPs is a woman. They do not have economic equality, since the pay gap is still not only large but actually widening. They do not have the freedom from violence they have sought, and with the conviction rate in rape cases standing at just 6 percent, they know that rapists enjoy an effective impunity in our society. ~ Natasha Walter
Pay Gap quotes by Natasha Walter
What keeps the pay gap in existence is not just the entitlement and complicity of men. It's the gratitude of women. Our gratitude is how power uses the tokenism of a few women to keep the rest of us in line. ~ Abby Wambach
Pay Gap quotes by Abby Wambach
But in every way, the shared metaphors we use of female access to power - 'knocking on the door', 'storming the citadel', 'smashing the glass ceiling', or just giving them a 'leg up' - underline female exteriority. Women in power are seen as breaking down barriers, or alternatively as taking something to which they are not quite entitled. ~ Mary Beard
Pay Gap quotes by Mary Beard
Girls, here's the truth about the Ban Bossy campaign: It's being spearheaded by a privileged group of elite feminists who have a very vested interest in stoking victim politics and exacerbating the gender divide. They actually encourage dependency and groupthink while paying lip service to empowerment and self-determination. They traffic in bogus wage disparity statistics, whitewashing the fact that what's actually left of that dwindling pay gap is due to the deliberate, voluntary choices women in the workforce make. ~ Michelle Malkin
Pay Gap quotes by Michelle Malkin
But here's the first clue: the male-female pay gap is not a gap between men and women; it is a gap between moms and dads. Or more precisely, between men and women's work-life decisions when they become moms and dads. ~ Warren Farrell
Pay Gap quotes by Warren Farrell
Because there still exists a significant pay gap, women tend to earn less than men over the course of their lifetimes. Compounding the problem, women tend to spend less time in the workforce than men. ~ Steve Israel
Pay Gap quotes by Steve Israel
pay gap could be less about market realities than the fact that the corporation has yet to be democratized. ~ Ron Davison
Pay Gap quotes by Ron Davison
When people suggest that what, all along, has been holding women back is other women bitching about each other, I think they're severely overestimating the power of a catty zinger during a cigarette break. We have to remember that snidely saying, "Her hair's a bit limp on top" isn't what's keeping womankind from closing the 30 percent pay gap and a place on the board of directors. I think that's more likely to be down to tens of thousands of years of ingrained social, political, and economic misogyny and the patriarchy, tbh. That's just got slightly more leverage than a gag about someone's bad trousers. ~ Caitlin Moran
Pay Gap quotes by Caitlin Moran
When we talk about gender pay gaps in the United States, and if you look at women without children, they earn 96 cents for every dollar that a man is earning, while for mothers it is about 76 cents. That's nearly 25 percent less. For single mothers, the situation is even worse. One third of them are living in poverty or just on the edge of poverty. This is an unacceptable situation. ~ Anne-Marie Slaughter
Pay Gap quotes by Anne-Marie Slaughter
In colleges, there are no gender separations in courses of study, and students can freely choose their majors. There are no male and female math classes. But women generally choose college courses that pay less in the labor market. Those are the choices that women themselves make. Those choices contribute to the pay gap ... ~ Phyllis Schlafly
Pay Gap quotes by Phyllis Schlafly
If you are a woman, you might feel torn between logical agreement and emotional resistance. Why? It seems like a simpler solution to blame men for the pay gap than to engineer your own bridge to higher pay. ~ Warren Farrell
Pay Gap quotes by Warren Farrell
Eye-popping tales of growing income inequality are hardly new. By now, nearly every American must be painfully aware of the widening pay gap between top executives and shop floor laborers; between 'Master of the Universe' financiers and pretty much everyone else. ~ Steven Rattner
Pay Gap quotes by Steven Rattner
With the pay gap in Hollywood, I think it's very easy to say - 'oh, what are they complaining for? They're making millions of dollars.' But by having a woman in the industry do this, it's easier for others to see it. ~ Debby Ryan
Pay Gap quotes by Debby Ryan
Pay off your mortgage before retirement, and that's one less bill you'll have to worry about when you're on a fixed income. ~ Suze Orman
Pay Gap quotes by Suze Orman
People who wish to salute the free and independent side of their evolutionary character acquire cats. People who wish to pay homage to their servile and salivating roots own dogs. ~ Anna Quindlen
Pay Gap quotes by Anna Quindlen
For which he had to pay "1 panegyrick poem every year." That is Homeric rent. ~ Adam Nicolson
Pay Gap quotes by Adam Nicolson
Anything that encourages a boy to open a book, in a world of more violent and therefore more compelling video games, is something I'm going to pay for. ~ Russell Smith
Pay Gap quotes by Russell Smith
Hollywood called me, asking me, "How much to do a movie with Farrah Fawcett?" "$50,000" They called back, "How about $20,000?" I said, "I'll pay it!" ~ Henny Youngman
Pay Gap quotes by Henny Youngman
It was Plato who bridged the gap between poetry and philosophy; for, in his work, appearance, despised by his Eleatic and Sophist predecessors, became a reflected image of perfection. He set poets the task of writing philosophically, not only in the sense of giving instruction, but in the sense of striving, by the imitation of appearance, to arrive at its true essence and to show its insufficiency measured by the beauty of the Idea. ~ Erich Auerbach
Pay Gap quotes by Erich Auerbach
The American people... have had enough of sacrificing their sons and daughters in the name of some illusory world order; they want someone else's sons and daughters to bear the burden. The American people are willing to pay for this privilege, in cash and in the circumscription of their own liberty. ~ Steven Pressfield
Pay Gap quotes by Steven Pressfield
Sorry.
Sorry means you feel the pulse of other people's pain as well as your own, and saying it means you take a share of it. And so it binds us together, makes us trodden and sodden as one another. Sorry is a lot of things. It's a hole refilled. A debt repaid. Sorry is the wake of misdeed. It's the crippling ripple of consequence. Sorry is sadness, just as knowing is sadness. Sorry is sometimes self-pity. But Sorry, really, is not about you. It's theirs to take or leave.
Sorry means you leave yourself open, to embrace or to ridicule or to revenge. Sorry is a question that begs forgiveness, because the metronome of a good heart won't settle until things are set right and true. Sorry doesn't take things back, but it pushes things forward. It bridges the gap. Sorry is a sacrament. It's an offering. A gift. ~ Craig Silvey
Pay Gap quotes by Craig Silvey
Pay more attention to the dotted lines, not just the destinations. The dotted lines are the silent, unspoken victories of this lifetime. ~ Hannah Brencher
Pay Gap quotes by Hannah Brencher
No scheme pays as well as legitimate business. ~ E.W. Howe
Pay Gap quotes by E.W. Howe
Tell him I said that he will know when he's my age that books aren't written on whims or old promises. Books are written on years turned inside out by ideas that never let go until you get them in print, and even then writing's a last resort, a desperate ransom you pay to get your life back. ~ Richard Bach
Pay Gap quotes by Richard Bach
I always knew my death would be a possible consequence of the work I do. But for me it was a price I was willing to pay because this is what I believed in. ~ Lynsey Addario
Pay Gap quotes by Lynsey Addario
A totally new kind of education is needed in the world. The person who is born to be a poet is proving himself stupid in mathematics and the person who could have been a great mathematician is just cramming history and feeling lost. Everything is topsy-turvy because education is not according to your nature: it does not pay any respect to the individual. It forces everybody into a certain pattern. ~ Osho
Pay Gap quotes by Osho
There is something awe-inspiring in one who has lost all inhibitions, who will do anything. Of course we make him pay afterward for his moment of superiority, his moment of impressiveness. ~ F Scott Fitzgerald
Pay Gap quotes by F Scott Fitzgerald
You could pay Arthur Janov to teach you to scream about history, or you could learn prayer or a mantra, or you could write your life down and hope to make peace with it, write it down, or paint it, or turn it into improvisational theater, but that was the best you could probably do. You were stuck. ~ Rick Moody
Pay Gap quotes by Rick Moody
No matter how good a deal sounds, if your name goes on the bottom line, you need to understand it and be sure you'll be able to pay. You are responsible for yourself forever. Forever. ~ Elizabeth Warren
Pay Gap quotes by Elizabeth Warren
For the next week, try the best you can to pay attention to sounds. You will start hearing all these sounds coming in. Once you let them in, you've already done the first and most critical thing, you've honored that information by including it. And by doing that, you've actually changed the world. ~ Robert Irwin
Pay Gap quotes by Robert Irwin
To a man and woman, all of her elderly patients had been surprised to be old - which Avery privately regarded as a serious failure to pay attention. ~ Lionel Shriver
Pay Gap quotes by Lionel Shriver
I refuse to pay a bill I don't owe. ~ Jon Jones
Pay Gap quotes by Jon Jones
The arithmetic makes it plain that inflation is a far more devastating tax than anything that has been enacted by our legislature. The inflation tax has a fantastic ability to simply consume capital. It makes no difference to a widow with her saving in a 5 percent passbook account whether she pays 100 percent income tax on her interest income during a period of zero inflation, or pays no income taxes during years of 5 percent inflation. Either way, she is 'taxed' in a manner that leave her no real income whatsoever. Any money she spends comes right out of capital. She would find outrageous a 120 percent income tax, but doesn't seem to notice that 5 percent inflation is the economic equivalent. ~ Warren Buffett
Pay Gap quotes by Warren Buffett
I will tell you this: I will not raise taxes on the middle-class to pay for these programs. ~ William J. Clinton
Pay Gap quotes by William J. Clinton
I'm a normal guy at heart. But on stage, they don't pay me for normal. ~ CeeLo Green
Pay Gap quotes by CeeLo Green
For our Selves will always do pretty well if we don't pay them too much attention. Our Selves are like some little children who will be happy enough so long as they are left to their own games, but when we begin to interfere with them, and make them presents of too nice playthings, or too many sweet things, they begin at once to fret and spoil. ~ George MacDonald
Pay Gap quotes by George MacDonald
We have reached the end of the road that is built on the set of traits held out for male identity
advance at any cost, pay any price, drive out all competitors, and kill them if necessary ... we have arrived at a point from which we must seek a basis of faith in connection
and not only faith but recognition that it is a requirement for the existence of human beings. ~ Gary Paul Nabhan Stephan Trimble
Pay Gap quotes by Gary Paul Nabhan Stephan Trimble
It crossed my mind that my letters are all about me and not you. I would hope that you pay me the same respect. ~ Bill Callahan
Pay Gap quotes by Bill Callahan
By the time I got to the Fox studio for my first major film, I knew how to hit a mark. I knew how to memorize lines. I knew how to pay attention. ~ Shirley Temple
Pay Gap quotes by Shirley Temple
I'll sing you a song of the long ago -
Seven shine the shiners, oh!
What did the Seven do way back when?
Why, they wove the Charter then!
Five for the warp, from beginning to end.
Two for the woof, to make and mend.
That's Seven, but what of the Nine -
What of the two who chose not to shine?
The Eighth did hide, hide all away,
But the Seven caught him and made him pay.
The Ninth was strong and fought with might,
But lone Orannis was put out of the light,
Broken in two and buried under hill,
For ever to lie there, wishing us ill. ~ Garth Nix
Pay Gap quotes by Garth Nix
I understand very well that politicians always have to bridge the gap until the next election, even if long-term dangers increase as a result. But as an economist, my time horizon is longer. ~ Hans-Werner Sinn
Pay Gap quotes by Hans-Werner Sinn
I didn't really like jazz that much and was unhappy in that genre. It was what I was doing just to get by and pay rent. ~ Yukimi Nagano
Pay Gap quotes by Yukimi Nagano
Modern married women do not fare better in life than their single counterparts. Married women in America do not live longer than single women; married women do not accumulate as much wealth as single women (you take a 7 percent pay cut, on average, just for getting hitched); married women do not thrive in their careers to the extent single women do; married women are significantly less healthy than single women; married women are more likely to suffer from depression than single women; and married women are more likely to die a violent death than single women - usually at the hands of a husband, which raises the grim reality that, statistically speaking, the most dangerous person in the average woman's life is her own man. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Pay Gap quotes by Elizabeth Gilbert
Loving kindness is a form of love that truly is an ability, and, as research scientists have show, it can be learned. It is the ability to take some risks with our awareness-to look at ourselves and others with kindness instead of reflexive criticism; to include in our concern those to whom we normally pay no attention; to care for ourselves unconditionally instead of thinking, "I will love myself as long as I never make a mistake." It is the ability to gather our attention and really listen to others, even those we've written off as not worth our time. It is the ability to see the humanity in people we don't know and the pain in people we find difficult. ~ Sharon Salzberg
Pay Gap quotes by Sharon Salzberg
Sometimes, we pay a higher price for trying to help someone fit into their skin than we do trying to fit into ours. ~ Srividya Srinivasan
Pay Gap quotes by Srividya Srinivasan
Today a minimum wage earner has to work a day and a half just to pay for a full tank of gas. That is simply shameful. ~ Bill Pascrell
Pay Gap quotes by Bill Pascrell
It pays to know the enemy - not least because at some time you may have the opportunity to turn him into a friend. ~ Margaret Thatcher
Pay Gap quotes by Margaret Thatcher
the greater the gender equity of a country, the smaller the gender gap in the importance of the financial resources of a partner (as well as in the importance of other preferences, like chastity and good looks).36 ~ Cordelia Fine
Pay Gap quotes by Cordelia Fine
I've always had to pay double for my sins: once with scoldings and then again with my own sense of despair. ~ Anne Frank
Pay Gap quotes by Anne Frank
Human's mind is the most valuable thing to shape every progress, but also the root cause of all mankind problems. ~ Pearl Zhu
Pay Gap quotes by Pearl Zhu
Life is full of regrets, but it doesn't pay to look back. ~ Zinedine Zidane
