Colour has taken hold of me; no longer do I have to chase after it. I know that it has hold of me forever. That is the significance of this blessed moment ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
One does not lash hat lies at a distance. The foibles that we ridicule must at least be a little bit our own. Only then will the work be a part of our own flesh. The garden must be weeded. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I imagined face and genitals to be the corresponding poles of the female sex, when girls wept I thought of pudenda weeping in unison. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I cannot be grasped in the here and now,
For my dwelling place is much among the dead,
As the yet unborn,
Slightly closer to the heart of creation than usual,
But still not close enough. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Already in 1915, Sophie Tauber divides the surface of her aquarelle into squares and rectangles which she then juxtaposes horizontally and perpendicularly as Mondrian, Itten and Paul Klee did in the same period, fh). She constructs them as if they were masonry work. The colors are luminous, ranging from the raw yellow to deep red or blue. ~ Hans Arp
Paul Klee quotes by Hans Arp
One day I will lie nowhere
with an angel at my side. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
First of all, the art of living; then as my ideal profession, poetry and philosophy, and as my real profession, plastic arts; in the last resort, for lack of income, illustrations. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
My hand is entirely the implement of a distant sphere. It is not my head that functions but something else, something higher, something somewhere remote. I must have great friends there, dark as well as bright. They are all very kind to me. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art doesn't reflect what we see; it makes us see. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
In earlier times artists liked to show what was actually visible ... nowadays we are concerned with reality, rather than the merely visible. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
After a noticeable silence, he'd recently published a book of technically baffling poems, with line breaks so arbitrary and frequent as to be useless, arrhythmic. On the page they look like some of Charles Bukowski's skinny, chatty, muttering-stuttering antiverses. Impossibly, Mark's words make music, the faraway strains of an irresistible jazz. It's plain to any reader, within a few lines - well, go read the poems and see, Marcus Ahearn traffics with the ineffable. He makes the mind of the speaker present, in that here-and-now where the reader actually reads - that place. Such a rare thing. Samuel Beckett. Jean Follain, Ionesco - the composer Billy Strayhorn. Mark calls his process "psychic improvisation" and referred me to the painter Paul Klee; the term was Klee's. "You just get out a pen and a notebook and let your mind go long," he told me. ~ Denis Johnson
Paul Klee quotes by Denis Johnson
A drawing is simply a line going for a walk. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
A long struggle lies in store for me in this field of color. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
My mirror probes down to the heart. I write words on the forehead and around the corners of the mouth. My human faces are truer than the real ones. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Everything passes, and what remains of former times, what remains of life, is the spiritual. In everything we do, the claim of the Absolute is unchanging. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art does not reflect what is seen, rather it makes the hidden visible. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible. ~ Paul Klee Foundation
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee Foundation
Art does not reproduce what is visible, it makes things visible. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Gradually compositions make an appearance again. Political - satirical - conceits expressed in one figure or a few. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Make chance essential. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I paint in order not to cry. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Democracy with its semi-civilization sincerely cherishes junk. The artists power should be spiritual. But the power of the majority is material. When these worlds meet occasionally, it is pure coincidence. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
See with one eye, feel with the other. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The art of mastering life is the prerequisite for all further forms of expression, whether they are paintings, sculptures, tragedies, or musical compositions. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
You said how Michelangelo was a manic-depressive who portrayed himself as a flayed martyr in his painting. Henri Matisse gave up being a lawyer because of appendicitis. Robert Schumann only began composing after his right hand became paralyzed and ended his career as a concert pianist. (...) You talked about Nietzsche and his tertiary syphilis. Mozart and his uremia. Paul Klee and the scleroderma that shrank his joints and muscles to death. Frida Kahlo and the spina bifida that covered her legs with bleeding sores. Lord Byron and his clubfoot. The Bronte sisters and their tuberculosis. Mark Rothko and his suicide. Flannery O'Connor and her lupus. Inspiration needs disease, injury, madness.

"According to Thomas Mann," Peter said, "'Great artists are great invalids. ~ Chuck Palahniuk
Paul Klee quotes by Chuck Palahniuk
He neither serves nor rules, he transmits. His position is humble and the beauty at the crown is not his own. He is merely a channel. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Colour and I are one. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
A certain fire pretends to be alive; it awakens. Working its way along the hand as a conductor, it reaches the support and engulfs it; then a leaping spark closes the circle it was to trace, coming back to the eye and beyond. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
When looking at any significant work of art, remember that a more significant one probably has had to be sacrificed. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Drawing is the art of taking a line for a walk. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The creation of a work of art must of necessity, as a result of entering into the specific dimensions of pictorial art, be accompanied by distortion of the natural form. For, therein is nature reborn. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
An active line on a walk, moving freely, without goal. A walk for a walk's sake. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Sometimes I dream of a work of really great breadth, ranging through the whole region of object, meaning, and style. This, I fear, will remain a dream, but it is a good thing to bear the possibility occasionally in mind. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The creation lives as genesis beneath the visible surface of the work. All intelligent people see this after the fact, but only the creative see it before the fact - in the future. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The artist of today is more than an improved camera, he is more complex, richer, and wider. He is a creature on the earth and a creature within the whole, that is, a creature on a star among stars. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Color has got me. I no longer need to chase after it. It has got me for ever. I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
To emphasize only the beautiful seems to me to be like a mathematical system that only concerns itself with positive numbers. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I still come closest to success with drawing. When I use color the results are dubious, for these painfully gained experiences bear less fruit. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Paul Klee seems to handle colors and dreams as if they both came out of a box of children's toys. He plays and dreams with whatever he finds. ~ Jean Helion
Paul Klee quotes by Jean Helion
By using patches of color and tone it is possible to capture every natural impression in the simplest way, freshly and immediately. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Satire must not be a kind of superfluous ill will, but ill will from a higher point of view. Ridiculous man, divine God. Or else, hatred against the bogged-down vileness of average man as against the possible heights that humanity might attain. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
To achieve vital harmony in a picture it must be constructed out of parts in themselves incomplete, brought into harmony only at the last stroke. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Spatial art does not begin with a poetic mood or idea, but with construction of one or more figures, with the harmonizing of several colors and tones, or with the devaluation of spatial relationships and so on. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art makes something a lot more visible or audible. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art should be like a holiday: something to give a man the opportunity to see things differently and to change his point of view. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Genius is the error in the system. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Color possesses me. I don't have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it. That is the meaning of this happy hour: Color and I are one. I am a painter. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The artist Paul Klee described drawing a picture as taking a line for a walk. I have borrowed his words to explain my approach to writing; when I write a novel it is like I am taking a thought for a walk. ~ Aminatta Forna
Paul Klee quotes by Aminatta Forna
It is possible that a picture will move far away from Nature and yet find its way back to reality. The faculty of memory, experience at a distance produces pictorial associations. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
A line is a dot that went for a walk. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The painter should not paint what he sees, but what will be seen. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I want to be as though newborn. To be almost primitive. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The pictorial work was born of movement, is itself recorded movement, and is assimilated through movement (eye muscles). ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
One eye sees, the other feels. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
You adapt yourself to the contents of the paintbox. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I should also mention that the Neue Galerie is piping music into the galleries where "Klee and America" is hanging, a practice for which vulgar is not even close to the word. Yes, I like Schumann's Carnaval, but I'm damned if I know why anybody thinks the paintings of Paul Klee profit from being viewed with Carnaval playing in the background. ~ Terry Teachout
Paul Klee quotes by Terry Teachout
It is the artistic mission to penetrate as far as may be toward that secret ground where primal law feeds growth. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
All the things an artist must be: poet, explorer of nature, philosopher! ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
After all, it's rather difficult to achieve the exact minimum, and it involves risks. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
There is no substitute for intuition. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
We construct and keep on constructing, yet intuition is still a good thing. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Each energy calls for its complementary energy to achieve self-contained stability based on the play of energies. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
My inspiration came from the land, ... and, of course, from Paul Klee ... and the poetics of his paintings. ~ Renzo Piano
Paul Klee quotes by Renzo Piano
All art is a memory of age-old things, dark things, whose fragments live on in the artist. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The way to form transcends its own destination, goes beyond the end of the way itself. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
In my productive activity, every time a type grows beyond the stage of its genesis, and I have about reached the goal, the intensity gets lost very quickly, and I have to look for new ways. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Chosen are those artists who penetrate to the region of that secret place where primeval power nurtures all evolution. There, where the powerhouse of all time and space call it brain or heart of creation activates every function, who is the artist who would not dwell there? ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Children also have artistic ability, and there is wisdom in there having it! The more helpless they are, the more instructive are the examples they furnish us; and they must be preserved free of corruption from an early age. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
To give emphasis only to beauty makes me think of a mathematics that deals with positive numbers only. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The function of the artist is the mythologization of the culture and the world. In the visual arts there were two men whose work handled mythological themes in a marvelous way: Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso. ~ Joseph Campbell
Paul Klee quotes by Joseph Campbell
The worst state of affairs is when science begins to concern itself with art. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Art does not reproduce the visible; it makes visible. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
The work of art is above all a process of creation. ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
Staring at a blank piece of paper, I can't think of anything original. I feel utterly uninspired and unreceptive. It's the familiar malaise of 'artist's block' and in such circumstances there is only one thing to do: just start drawing.

The artist Paul Klee refers to this simple act as 'taking a line for a walk', an apt description of my own basic practice: allowing the tip of a pencil to wander through the landscape of a sketchbook, motivated by a vague impulse but hoping to find something much more interesting along the way. Strokes, hooks, squiggles and loops can resolve into hills, faces, animals, machines -even abstract feelings- the meanings of which are often secondary to the simple act of making (something young children know intuitively). Images are not preconceived and then drawn, they are conceived as they are drawn. Indeed, drawing is its own form of thinking, in the same way birdsong is 'thought about' within a bird's throat. ~ Shaun Tan
Paul Klee quotes by Shaun Tan
Nothing can be rushed. It must grow, it should grow of itself, and if the time ever comes for that work, then so much the better! ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
For the understanding of a picture a chair is needed. Why a chair? To prevent the legs, as they tire, from interfering with the mind ~ Paul Klee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Klee
I love [my parents], but what if I could really talk to them? I mean, what if they had some answers? Or would that just be too weird? ~ Paul Rudnick
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Rudnick
Jacobins, I have a truth to tell you. You do not know your most deadly enemies; they are the constitutional priests. It is they who protest most in the provinces against anarchists, disorganisers, Dantonism, Robespierrism, Jacobinism ... Do not cherish any longer the popular errors; cut at the roots of superstition! Declare openly that the priests are your enemies. ~ Jean-Paul Marat
Paul Klee quotes by Jean-Paul Marat
Only then did he understand that he really wanted to know nothing about El Ga'a beyond the fact that it was isolated and unfrequented, that it was precisely those things he had been trying to ascertain about it. ~ Paul Bowles
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Bowles
Over the Christmas period, I spent time with both Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, and you listen to stories and tales of how hard it can be when it's really hard, and I think we easily all talk ourselves into the proposition that it's never been as hard as this. Well it's been hard in the past. It's been really hard. So you keep doing it and, the more you do it, the more you gain strength and confidence that you can do it. ~ Julia Gillard
Paul Klee quotes by Julia Gillard
Life goes on, brah! ~ The Beatles
Paul Klee quotes by The Beatles
Self-professed liberals are only 15 to 20% of the electorate. ~ Paul Weyrich
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Weyrich
A wise person can want nothing better from life than to pay back the wrong that has been done him. ~ Jean-Paul Sartre
Paul Klee quotes by Jean-Paul Sartre
I argue that the Jesus of the Gospels is essentially a myth. The Gospels are largely fiction. They were created around the turn of the first and second century in order to give concreteness and substance to the Jesus who, as the Messiah, had appeared to Paul and his fellow apostles in ecstatic visions. ~ Alvar Ellegard
Paul Klee quotes by Alvar Ellegard
The world does not have an Islam problem; the world has a dignity problem. ~ Rand Paul
Paul Klee quotes by Rand Paul
That's how the world is, and there is nothing an insignificant nobody like you, or even a significant somebody like me, can do about it. ~ Paul Hoffman
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Hoffman
Everything is silent again: but it isn't the same silence. It's raining: tapping lightly against the frosted glass windows; if there are any more masked children in the street, the rain is going to spoil their cardboard masks. ~ Jean-Paul Sartre
Paul Klee quotes by Jean-Paul Sartre
So, regarding the time frame, I'm only too willing to admit that my crystal ball, like everybody else's, is cracked. If I could predict precisely, I would have started predicting the stock market and would now be living with a bunch of young women on Bora Bora, having bought it. ~ Paul R. Ehrlich
Paul Klee quotes by Paul R. Ehrlich
We have to restore confidence that the marketplace can deliver services as well as it can goods. ~ Ron Paul
Paul Klee quotes by Ron Paul
If we judge our lives by what we know or by what we say, we can easily deceive ourselves into thinking that we are something we are not; it is wiser to evaluate ourselves by the amount of truth we actually live. This is very humbling. ~ Paul Washer
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Washer
A bad poem is one that vanishes into meaning. ~ Paul Valery
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Valery
The true gospel is radically exclusive. Jesus is not a way; He is the way, and all other ways are no way at all. If Christianity would only move one small step toward a more tolerant ecumenicalism and exchange the definite article the for the indefinite article a, the scandal would be over, and the world and Christianity could become friends. However, whenever this occurs, Christianity ceases to be Christianity, Christ is denied, and the world is without a Savior. ~ Paul Washer
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Washer
Dancing is to music what a beloved wife is to her husband. Both of them are so in love, you can't separate them. ~ Paul Bamikole
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Bamikole
The sun always shines above the clouds. ~ Paul F. Davis
Paul Klee quotes by Paul F. Davis
I had a great time investigating the pigments of different mutant fruit flies by following experimental protocols published in Scientific American, and I also remember making my own beetle collection when it was still acceptable to make such collections. ~ Paul Nurse
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Nurse
This whole thing is a process, not an event. ~ William Paul Young
Paul Klee quotes by William Paul Young
I believe bending to the will or beliefs of one person and not being an individual will eventually lead to the perpetual destruction of society today as we know it! ~ Paul Lee
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Lee
Communication - the human connection - is the key to personal and career success. ~ Paul J. Meyer
Paul Klee quotes by Paul J. Meyer
In the 1990s I began to study the prospects that life could spread from Mars to Earth or maybe Earth to Mars and that maybe life began on Mars and came to Earth, and that idea seemed to have a lot of traction and is now accepted as very plausible. ~ Paul Davies
Paul Klee quotes by Paul Davies
