Members of the Athenian assemblies were chosen by lot, a method meant to protect the system from degeneracy. Luckily, this effect has been investigated with modern political systems. In a computer simulation, Alessandro Pluchino and his colleagues showed how adding a certain number of randomly selected politicians to the process can improve the functioning of the parliamentary system. ~ Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Parliamentary System quotes by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
It is impossible to practice parliamentary politics without having patience, decency, politeness and courtesy. ~ Khaleda Zia
Parliamentary System quotes by Khaleda Zia
We, as conservative intellectuals, should not be in the business of making excuses for bad parliamentary decisions by Republican leaders in Congress. ~ David Frum
Parliamentary System quotes by David Frum
Say, oh well, the Republicans don't like this therefor I shouldn't do it. What kind of a government would that be. We're not a parliamentary system. ~ John Kasich
Parliamentary System quotes by John Kasich
The Restoration did not so much restore as replace. In restoring the monarchy with King Charles II, it replaced Cromwell's Commonwealth and its Puritan ethos with an almost powerless monarch whose tastes had been formed in France.

It replaced the power of the monarchy with the power of a parliamentary system - which was to develop into the two parties, Whigs and Tories - with most of the executive power in the hands of the Prime Minister. Both parties benefited from a system which encouraged social stability rather than opposition.
Above all, in systems of thought, the Restoration replaced the probing, exploring, risk-taking intellectual values of the Renaissance. It relied on reason and on facts rather than on speculation. So, in the decades between 1660 and 1700, the basis was set for the growth of a new kind of society. This society was Protestant (apart from the brief reign of the Catholic King James II, 1685-88), middle class, and unthreatened by any repetition of the huge and traumatic upheavals of the first part of the seventeenth century. It is symptomatic that the overthrow of James II in 1688 was called The 'Glorious' or 'Bloodless' Revolution. The 'fever in the blood' which the Renaissance had allowed was now to be contained, subject to reason, and kept under control. With only the brief outburst of Jacobin revolutionary sentiment at the time of the Romantic poets, this was to be the political context in the United Kingdom for two centuries or more. ~ Ronald Carter
Parliamentary System quotes by Ronald Carter
Built up by the middle classes to hold their own against royalty, sanctioning, and, at the same time strengthening, their sway over the workers, parliamentary rule is pre-eminently a middle-class rule. The upholders of this system have never seriously maintained that a parliament or a municipal council represent a nation or a city. The most intelligent among them know that this is impossible. The middle classes have simply used the parliamentary system to raise a protecting barrier against the pretensions of royalty, without giving the people liberty. But gradually, as the people become conscious of their real interests, and the variety of their interests is growing, the system can no longer work. Therefore democrats of all countries vainly imagine various palliatives. The Referendum is tried and found to be a failure; proportional representation is spoken of, the representation of minorities, and other parliamentary Utopias. In a word, they strive to find what is not to be found, and after each new experiment they are bound to recognize that it was a failure; so that confidence in Representative Government vanishes more and more. ~ Pyotr Kropotkin
Parliamentary System quotes by Pyotr Kropotkin
Our Parliamentary system has simply failed to meet the challenge of judicial activism. ~ Stockwell Day
Parliamentary System quotes by Stockwell Day
Some people suggest that the problem is the separation of powers. If you had a parliamentary system, the struggle for power would not result in such complex peace treaties that empower so many different people to pursue so many contradictory aims. ~ James Q. Wilson
Parliamentary System quotes by James Q. Wilson
It is very similar to late Weimar Germany, The parallels are striking. There was also tremendous disillusionment with the parliamentary system. The most striking fact about Weimar was not that the Nazis managed to destroy the Social Democrats and the Communists but that the traditional parties, the Conservative and Liberal parties, were hated and disappeared. It left a vacuum which the Nazis very cleverly and intelligently managed to take over. [Chomsky in a 2010 interview with Chris Hedges on the crisis of democracy in the United States] ~ Chomsky Noam
Parliamentary System quotes by Chomsky Noam
Canada evolved within the British Empire: it inherited the Parliamentary system, the Cabinet system and all the other features of the British constitutional system which had been in place, for the most part, for several centuries before Canada was even thought of. ~ Stockwell Day
Parliamentary System quotes by Stockwell Day
Segregation has no place in the education system. ~ Richard Dawkins
Parliamentary System quotes by Richard Dawkins
Surely the greatest mercy granted us by Providence is our ignorance of the future. Imagine if we knew the outcome of our hopes and plans, or could see the manner in which we are doomed to die - how ruined our lives would be! Instead we live on dumbly from day to day as happily as animals. But all things must come to dust eventually. No human being, no system, no age is impervious to this law; everything beneath the stars will perish; the hardest rock will be worn away. Nothing endures but words. ~ Robert Harris
Parliamentary System quotes by Robert Harris
The apostle Paul urges Christians everywhere in all ages to be nonconformists as far as the world system is concerned. We are not to conform. A true Christian, living an obedient life, is a constant rebuke to those who accept the
moral standards of this world. ~ Billy Graham
Parliamentary System quotes by Billy Graham
Although this detail has no connection whatever with the real substance of what we are about to relate, it will not be superfluous, if merely for the sake of exactness in all points, to mention here the various rumors and remarks which had been in circulation about him from the very moment when he arrived in the diocese. True or false, that which is said of men often occupies as important a place in their lives, and above all in their destinies, as that which they do. M. Myriel was the son of a councillor of the Parliament of Aix; hence he belonged to the nobility of the bar. It was said that his father, destining him to be the heir of his own post, had married him at a very early age, eighteen or twenty, in accordance with a custom which is rather widely prevalent in parliamentary families. In spite of this marriage, however, it was said that Charles Myriel created a great deal of talk. He was well formed, though rather short in stature, elegant, graceful, intelligent; the whole of the first portion of his life had been devoted to the world and to gallantry. ~ Victor Hugo
Parliamentary System quotes by Victor Hugo
Can something be created in language independently of the people who use the language? Can language become a self-replicating system or ... ' I'm drunk, I suddenly realise, so I shut up. But ~ Scarlett Thomas
Parliamentary System quotes by Scarlett Thomas
Pakistan is, I always feel, hopeful. You know, our system of government is not, and the system of foreign policy whereby we do whatever is asked of us as long as the price is right only proves to fundamentalist outfits and to militant groups that when we talk of things like democracy, when we talk of things like foreign policy, what we're really talking about is being pro-American. ~ Fatima Bhutto
Parliamentary System quotes by Fatima Bhutto
There is no real answer (to the U.S. economic crisis) but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles. ~ Robert Waterman McChesney
Parliamentary System quotes by Robert Waterman McChesney
The American system is the most ingenious system of control in world history. With a country so rich in natural resources, talent, and labor power the system can afford to distribute just enough wealth to just enough people to limit discontent to a troublesome minority. It is a country so powerful, so big, so pleasing to so many of its citizens that it can afford to give freedom of dissent to the small number who are not pleased. There is no system of control with more openings, apertures, leeways, flexibilities, rewards for the chosen, winning tickets in lotteries. There is none that disperses its controls more complexly through the voting system, the work situation, the church, the family, the school, the mass media
none more successful in mollifying opposition with reforms, isolating people from one another, creating patriotic loyalty. ~ Howard Zinn
Parliamentary System quotes by Howard Zinn
No matter what challenges you are faced with,or the opinions people have of you, rejection in and of itself from others is not a valid system to predict your future. ~ Scott Allan
Parliamentary System quotes by Scott Allan
In a pure capitalist system, an institution as moronic and corrupt as Bank of America would be swiftly punished by the market - the executives would get to loot their own firms once, then they'd be looking for jobs again. ~ Matt Taibbi
Parliamentary System quotes by Matt Taibbi
but since the system is prac- tically emptied of energy during such a state, no one can afford to permit even a slight tendency in that direction. When such tendencies are felt ~ Christian D. Larson
Parliamentary System quotes by Christian D. Larson
If we didn't have greed, market economies wouldn't be as innovative as they are. But in my view, greed has to be contained by the fear of losses, so there has to be a system where, if you take too much risk, you go into bankruptcy. You don't systematically bail out people who take excessive risks. ~ Nouriel Roubini
Parliamentary System quotes by Nouriel Roubini
He barely managed not to choke it into free fall, atomized. Thick, green, herbal, sweet as syrup - he nearly gagged on the sweetness - perhaps sixty percent pure ethanol. But what was the rest of it? It burned down his esophagus, making him feel suddenly like an animated display of the digestive system, with all the different parts picked out in colored lights. Respectfully, he wiped the mouthpiece on his sleeve and handed the bottle to its owner, who tucked it back under his arm. "Thanks," Miles gasped. Mayhew nodded. "So how," Miles aspirated, then cleared his throat to a more normal tone, "what are you planning to do next? What are you demanding? ~ Lois McMaster Bujold
Parliamentary System quotes by Lois McMaster Bujold
By the time Apple's Macintosh operating system finally falls into the public domain, there will be no machine that could possibly run it. The term of copyright for software is effectively unlimited. ~ Lawrence Lessig
Parliamentary System quotes by Lawrence Lessig
Plainly it isn't an exact science, despite it being a complex interaction of micro-decisions and corresponding thought; perhaps it doesn't always work and we pass by some potential soulmates like the proverbial ships in the night, never quite connecting. Then again, perhaps the system is tenacious and continues to run like a computer program on infinite loop, so that if at first you don't meet, you are drawn back together for another try. ~ Simon Pegg
Parliamentary System quotes by Simon Pegg
There's been an unquestionable decline in American culture. The education system is thin on the ground. People don't read as deeply and at length as they used to. And the media has been scattered into so many cable channels. ~ Jay Parini
Parliamentary System quotes by Jay Parini
Universal coverage, not medical technology, is the foundation of any caring health care system. ~ Richard Lamm
Parliamentary System quotes by Richard Lamm
The people must be helped to think naturally about money. They must be told what it is, and what makes it money, and what are the possible tricks of the present system which put nations and peoples under control of the few. ~ Henry Ford
Parliamentary System quotes by Henry Ford
You are no stronger than your belief system. ~ T.D. Jakes
Parliamentary System quotes by T.D. Jakes
We're not trying to harass the average American. We need to convert this now to a risk-based system, with TSA concentrating and focusing on intelligence, on security, setting up again the parameters of which we do this. ~ John Mica
Parliamentary System quotes by John Mica
Another way is via genetic engineering. Here the germ is inserted into plasmid that has been manipulated by scientists. This type of plasmid is circular segments of DNA extracted from bacteria to serve as a vector. Scientists can add multiple genes and whatever genes they want into this plasmid. In case of vaccines, this includes a genetic piece of the vaccine germ and normally a gene for antibiotic resistance. This means that when the toxic gene is cultured inside the yeast, it has been designed with a new genetic code that makes it resistant to the antibiotic it's coded for. The gene-plasmid combo is inserted into a yeast cell to be replicated. When the yeast replicates, the DNA from the plasmid is reproduced as a part of the yeast DNA. Once enough cells have been replicated, the genetic material in the new and improved yeast cell is extracted and put into the vaccine. Examples of this vaccine are the acellular pertussis and hepatitis B vaccines. One thing that doesn't seem to concern scientists is the fact that the manmade genetic combination becomes the vaccine component. This mixture of intended and unintended genetic information may cause our immune system to overreact. This can be especially complicated for a child with compromised immune system. Another concern is that this new genetic code can become integrated with our own genetic material. Yeast, for instance, is very much like human DNA. It shares about one third of our proteins. ~ James Morcan
Parliamentary System quotes by James Morcan
You cannot go to sleep with one form of economic system and wake up the next morning with another. ~ Mikhail Gorbachev
Parliamentary System quotes by Mikhail Gorbachev
Suffering is to the heart and soul as tears are to the eyes, cleansing and expelling toxicity from the inner system. When we do not allow ourselves to feel appropriate pain, we move into a sort of non-experience. We watch life rather than live it; we look but never get too close. ~ Tian Dayton
Parliamentary System quotes by Tian Dayton
When people who are seeking change start out, they are driven by commitment to a cause. But as internecine power struggles take over, one-time idealists fall prey to corruption. They become just as corrupt and manipulative as the system that they want to overthrow. ~ Anurag Kashyap
Parliamentary System quotes by Anurag Kashyap
Ignored ... was the one unbridgeable gap between physics and any such science of human behavior: the surprises that arise from free will and human creativity ... they constitute the most important economic events. For a miracle is simply an innovation, a sudden and bountiful addition of information to the system. ~ George Gilder
Parliamentary System quotes by George Gilder
to." In an attempt to stop gipsies setting up camps on the Green Belt, ministers have already announced plans to force travellers to prove that they are actually "travelling". The new measures say that travellers have to prove they have a "nomadic" lifestyle to qualify for help in the planning system. Experts said that this ~ Anonymous

Every part of the system of Reiki is ultimately about meditation and compassion as keys to healing. ~ Kathleen Prasad
Parliamentary System quotes by Kathleen Prasad
The difficulty of looking at a system like natural selection if you have any sort of moral sense yourself, is almost what makes it beautiful. ~ Paul Bettany
Parliamentary System quotes by Paul Bettany
The system of domination is founded on depriving nations of their true identity. It seeks to deprive nations of their culture, identity, self-confidence and in this way dominate them. ~ Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Parliamentary System quotes by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
You may be sure that in this new international system, the American citizen will count for precious little. ~ Pat Buchanan
Parliamentary System quotes by Pat Buchanan
The best thing you can give to a child is to create an environment where the child can develop an independent mind so that he will be the man of no one and the instrument of no system! ~ Mehmet Murat Ildan
Parliamentary System quotes by Mehmet Murat Ildan
Only man as an individual human being lives; the state is just a system, a mere machine for sorting and tabulating the masses. Anyone, therefore, who thinks in terms of men minus the individual, in huge numbers, atomizes himself and becomes a thief and a robber to himself. He is infected with the leprosy of collective thinking and has become an inmate of that insalubrious stud-farm called the totalitarian State. Our ~ C. G. Jung
Parliamentary System quotes by C. G. Jung
Once I was in college, I was actually trying to write a comedy screenplay and I wrote basically the worst movie ever and just threw it away and never showed anybody. Everyone needs to get that first bad screenplay out of your system before you start writing other stuff. ~ Scot Armstrong
Parliamentary System quotes by Scot Armstrong
I believe in the law. I think we have a great system of justice. But I do think that system of justice has been corrupted by racism and classism. I think it's difficult for 'poor people' - poor white people, brown people - to be treated fairly before the law in the same way that upper-class people are. ~ Henry Louis Gates
