Parents always make their worst mistakes with their oldest children. That's when parents know the least and care the most, so they're more likely to be wrong and also more likely to insist that they're right. ~ Orson Scott Card
Oldest Child quotes by Orson Scott Card
I've been the oldest child since before you were born ~ E.L. Konigsburg
Oldest Child quotes by E.L. Konigsburg
The sixth and last eulogy was from Roderick, Hugo and Verna's oldest child. He wrote a three-page tribute to his father, and it was read by the reverend. Even Michael Geismar, a cold-blooded Presbyterian, finally succumbed to his emotions. The ~ John Grisham
Oldest Child quotes by John Grisham
I was the oldest child, and both my parents worked, so I had a great deal of responsibility from a very young age. ~ Suzanne Vega
Oldest Child quotes by Suzanne Vega
When Marion had been a teenager, she wanted a tattoo. As an oldest child who did mostly what was expected of her, she had been fascinated by the abandon tattoos implied, the willing, blind leap into commitment. ~ Erica Bauermeister
Oldest Child quotes by Erica Bauermeister
Families, by and large, like most groups, resist change. If one member of a family wants to move away, this is regarded as a betrayal, for example. If one member of a family is fat and tries to lose weight, often other members of the family will sabotage the effort. If one member of the family wants to get out of a role he or she has been playing for years, this is usually difficult ot do because the rest of the family tries not to let it happen. If your role is clown, you remain the clown. If your role is responsible oldest child, you probably keep that role within your family for your entire life. If you are the black sheep, you'll find it very diffcult to change colors in the eyes of your family no matter how many good deeds you do. ~ Edward M. Hallowell
Oldest Child quotes by Edward M. Hallowell
David Fincher is a longtime friend. As a director, my wife had worked with him as a makeup artist when he would do Madonna videos years before, and his child and my oldest child were in preschool together, so we're kind of dad-friends through that, too. ~ Anthony Edwards
Oldest Child quotes by Anthony Edwards
Nothing like cleaning the whole house while my siblings sing "O Canada" - #oldestchildsyndrome. ~ Michelle N. Onuorah
Oldest Child quotes by Michelle N. Onuorah
The thing that I remember the most in my childhood was the love of family and the discipline in the family. My father and mother both were disciplinarians, and they didn't mind using the rod. Maybe because I was the oldest child I always felt I got much more of it than anybody else. ~ Billy Graham
Oldest Child quotes by Billy Graham
When I was nine, I had a babysitter who didn't want to hurt anything. She put it just like that when I asked her why she wasn't having chicken with my older brother and me: "I don't want to hurt anything." [ ... ] What our babysitter said made sense to me, not only because it seemed true, but because it was the extension to food of everything my parents had taught me. We don't hurt family members. We don't hurt friends or strangers. We don't even hurt upholstered furniture. My not having thought to include animals in that list didn't make them the exceptions to it. It just made me a child, ignorant of the world's workings. Until I wasn't. At which point I had to change my life. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Oldest Child quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
Unfortunately, I predict we will see a lot more of this type of behavior (and worse) as our culture progresses beyond Anglo domination. Many white people are beginning to feel like their world is being taken from them, and it causes fear and outbursts of violence like this.

Except nothing is actually being taken away, it's just now being shared. It's what is referred to as privilege. Before, we (white people) could assume everything catered to us by default. Everything spoke our language. Everyone (that mattered) looked like us. Everything reflected our beliefs (well, the religious majority, anyways).

Now, that is not the case. We are actually having to share space with others. What we are seeing with acts of aggression at restaurants like this is a sort of only-child selfishness taken to the extreme. We've been privileged for a long time now, and we don't like to share.

There are many privilege axes beyond white. There is christian privilege, straight (heterosexual) privilege, and male privilege. If you are angered by the acceptance of things counter to how you live, but do no actual harm, then you are probably a victim of privilege.

[In response to women wearing hijabs being attacked at restaurants, November 2015] ~ Michael Brewer
Oldest Child quotes by Michael Brewer
Life on the farm had fed his soul since he was a child. he was ever grateful to Gott for giving him a chance to work the land and live by the seasons. It was a good life...but a lonely one for a man his age, a man too old to be living with his family. ~ Rosalind Lauer
Oldest Child quotes by Rosalind Lauer
Fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, probation, no jail time . . . He knew fourth degree meant simple 'touching.' What was wrong with simple touching? Why would anyone be sent to prison for that? Ridiculous! ~ Mark M. Bello
Oldest Child quotes by Mark M. Bello
When I got this job in New York five months ago, I wasn't confident enough to come to the city without a roommate. When I first saw Miracle on 34th Street as a child, I knew there was an apartment overlooking Central Park with my name on it. But then Welcome Back, Kotter got me worried that I'd have to take an elevated train covered in graffiti to get to it. Eventually, after watching Fame, I realized that I might just be scrappy enough to get by if I learned a heartfelt song or two and wore the right leg warmers. ~ Josh Kilmer-Purcell
Oldest Child quotes by Josh Kilmer-Purcell
Let every young man and woman be warned by my example, and understand that good handwriting is a necessary part of education. I am now of the opinion that children should first be taught the art of drawing before learning how to write. Let the child learn his letters by observation as he does different objects, such as flowers, birds, etc., and let him learn handwriting only after he has learnt to draw objects. He will then write a beautifully formed hand. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Oldest Child quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
Most of us love a non-self, or something extrinsic and apart from our inner life; but a mother's love during the time she is a flesh-and-blood ciborium is not for a non-self but for one that is her very self, a perfect example of charity and love which hardly perceives a separation. Motherhood then becomes a kind of priesthood. She brings God to man by preparing the flesh in which the soul will be implanted; she brings man to God in offering the child back again to the Creator. ~ Fulton J. Sheen
Oldest Child quotes by Fulton J. Sheen
I was not a lovable child, and I'd grown into a deeply unlovable adult. Draw a picture of my soul, and it'd be a scribble with fangs. ~ Gillian Flynn
Oldest Child quotes by Gillian Flynn
I had a long talk with my dear Fat Mary that night, because I had many questions. Could someone actually be beaten to death by such a nun? Did Mother Rufina, the new Superior, know that Sister Clotilda was so cruel? Who let her work with children? Could nuns go to hell?
Fat Mary told me she didn't know the answers to my questions, but she reminded me that it was her role to take my worries and burdens and keep them for me until a time when I could understand them. ~ Maria Nhambu
Oldest Child quotes by Maria Nhambu
You have not slept for many days together, Legna. Why do you assume you might have success today?
Legna turned around sharply, driving her gaze and attention out the window, trying to use the sprawling lawn as a slate with which to fill her mind. Mind Demon he was not, but she knew he was capable of seeing far enough into her emotional state by just monitoring her physiological reactions to his observations. Legna bit her lip hard, furious that she should feel like the child he always referred to her as in their conversations. Young one, indeed. How would he like it if she referred to him as a decrepit old buzzard? ~ Jacquelyn Frank
Oldest Child quotes by Jacquelyn Frank
A child learns to discard his ideals, whereas a grown-up never wears out his short pants. ~ Karl Kraus
Oldest Child quotes by Karl Kraus
Sometimes I make very selfish choices; like I did 'Once Upon A Time' for my inner 8-year-old and my hypothetical future child. I've done some movies because I would regret them if I didn't, but other projects I've done because they've scared me or if I felt I needed to do a big romantic comedy to help me professionally. ~ Ginnifer Goodwin
Oldest Child quotes by Ginnifer Goodwin
Small children like to mimic their parents. Give them something good to mimic read a book.

Children learn what they live.

Morals are taught by parents from a young age. They are not learned from text books.

Buying a book for a child is a small price. A smile on a child's face is priceless.

Communication with children give better odds in knowing what they want.

Using imagination can inspire us all. Why not allow children to explore their imagination?

A happy child is a child reading a good book. ~ Cindy Roman
Oldest Child quotes by Cindy Roman
Our child benefit goes directly to the families who need it the most. ~ Justin Trudeau
Oldest Child quotes by Justin Trudeau
Love your kids and just be there for them. You don't have to eyeball their every moment or to orchestrate all their comings and goings. They know this. They know that's too much. All they want is to be assured that there's a home fire cooking, that there are two foremen and a rulebook, and that there's someone to tuck them in at night. ~ Carew Papritz
Oldest Child quotes by Carew Papritz
I have always been so sure - too sure ... But now I am very humble and I say like a little child: "I do not know ... " ~ Agatha Christie
Oldest Child quotes by Agatha Christie
God created places and things in the Old Testament to teach us about Jesus in the New Testament. These pictures are so simple, even a child can understand them. God graciously babbled at us so we can learn complex truths. ~ Todd Friel
Oldest Child quotes by Todd Friel
My goal is to get peace and my goal is to see education of every child ~ Malala Yousafzai
Oldest Child quotes by Malala Yousafzai
Ordering a man to write a poem is like commanding a pregnant woman to give birth to a red-headed child. ~ Carl Sandburg
Oldest Child quotes by Carl Sandburg
Our Lord...made it very clear that it is not your identification that is essential. We are to be identified with Christ! We are in Christ by the baptism of the Holy Spirit the moment we trust Christ as our Saviour and are born again as a child of God. ~ J. Vernon McGee
Oldest Child quotes by J. Vernon McGee
You can define how strong a democracy is by how its government treats ... the child of the state. ~ Lemn Sissay
Oldest Child quotes by Lemn Sissay
Favorite poems are like favorite children. We definitely have them but we never tell as the others would have their feelings hurt. ~ Nikki Giovanni
Oldest Child quotes by Nikki Giovanni
This system in which a child is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses, also takes into account a child's special aptitude for mathematics. When they leave the material, the children very easily reach the point where they wish to write out the operation. They can thus carryout an abstract mental operation and acquire a kind of natural and spontaneous inclination for mental calculations. ~ Maria Montessori
Oldest Child quotes by Maria Montessori
Someone dehumanises you by violating your child and every human thought you had for them is broken, undermined, then gone. ~ Abigail Tarttelin
Oldest Child quotes by Abigail Tarttelin

only for their baby clemency

"bring on the birth" authoritie ~ R.M. Romarney
Oldest Child quotes by R.M. Romarney
In fact, every child on earth born after June 23, 1988 belongs to what I call Generation Hot. This generation includes some two billion young people, all of whom have grown up under global warming and are fated to spend the rest of their lives confronting its mounting impacts. ~ Mark Hertsgaard
Oldest Child quotes by Mark Hertsgaard
Every year is vital in the life of a child. ~ Jack McConnell
Oldest Child quotes by Jack McConnell
Some children become more anxious as the operation continues. One suggests that if the Furby dies, it might haunt them. It is alive enough to turn into a ghost. Indeed, a group of children start to call the empty Furby skin "the ghost of Furby" and the Furby's naked body "the goblin." They are not happy that this operation might leave a Furby goblin and ghost at large. One girl comes up with the idea that the ghost of the Furby will be less fearful if distributed. She asks if it would be okay "if every child took home a piece of Furby skin. ~ Sherry Turkle
Oldest Child quotes by Sherry Turkle
Not wi' child yet?" she demanded. "Raspberry leaves, that's the thing. Steep a handful wi' rosehips and drink it when the moon's waxing, from the quarter to the full. Then when it wanes from the full to the half, take a bit o' barberry to purge your womb." "Oh," I said, "well - " "I'd a bit of a favor to ask his lairdship," the old lady went on. "But as I see he's a bit occupied at present, I'll tell you about it." "All right," I agreed weakly, not seeing how I could stop her anyway. "It's my grandson," she said, fixing me ~ Diana Gabaldon
Oldest Child quotes by Diana Gabaldon
That's the paradox: the only time most people feel alive is when they're suffering, when something overwhelms their ordinary, careful armour, and the naked child is flung out onto the world. That's why the things that are worst to undergo are best to remember. But when that child gets buried away under their adaptive and protective shells - he becomes one of the walking dead, a monster. ~ Ted Hughes
Oldest Child quotes by Ted Hughes
And on bad days when you feel like you're stuck on a rock in the middle of nowhere, with no earth beneath you to sink your roots in, and no breeze to push your life forward, reach out to all those who ever gave you love, and believe with the faith of a child. ~ Sandra Kring
Oldest Child quotes by Sandra Kring
I was never used to being happy, so that wasn't something I ever took for granted. I did sort of think, you know, marriage did that. You see, I was brought up differently from the average American child because the average child is brought up expecting to be happy - that's it, successful, happy, and on time. ~ Marilyn
Oldest Child quotes by Marilyn
Does not a child recognize her own mother? ~ Lauren Baratz-Logsted
Oldest Child quotes by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
My oldest brother was a big influence on the films I watched as a kid. ~ Seann William Scott
Oldest Child quotes by Seann William Scott
As a child, I was constantly being sent on playdates with other kids - the shrinks insisted I interact with cohorts. That's what my meeting with Lyle was like: those first loose, horrible ten minutes, when the grown-ups have left, and neither kid knows what the other one wants, so you stand there, near the TV they've told you to keep off, fiddling with the antenna. ~ Gillian Flynn
Oldest Child quotes by Gillian Flynn
I'm an only child, and I can take all the attention you manage to pile on me. ~ Billy Collins
Oldest Child quotes by Billy Collins
I was kind of a selfish child, who always wanted things his way, and I've kind of taken that over into my relationship with the world. ~ Alan Moore
Oldest Child quotes by Alan Moore
[NINA]
When I was a child I stayed wide awake
Climbed to the highest place
On every fire escape
Restless to climb

I got every scholarship
Saved every dollar
The first to go to college
How do I tell them why
I'm coming back home? ~ Lin-Manuel Miranda
Oldest Child quotes by Lin-Manuel Miranda
Remember that a woman who has given birth to a dead child has given birth and is recovering physically, too. Don't be afraid of grieving parents. ~ Elizabeth McCracken
Oldest Child quotes by Elizabeth McCracken
I can give no adequate description of the Horror Camp in which my men and myself were to spend the next month of our lives. It was just a barren wilderness, as bare as a chicken run. Corpses lay everywhere, some in huge piles, sometimes they lay singly or in pairs where they had fallen. It took a little time to get used to seeing men women and children collapse as you walked by them and to restrain oneself from going to their assistance. One had to get used early to the idea that the individual just did not count. One knew that five hundred a day were dying and that five hundred a day were going on dying for weeks before anything we could do would have the slightest effect. It was, however, not easy to watch a child choking to death from diphtheria when you knew a tracheotomy and nursing would save it, one saw women drowning in their own vomit because they were too weak to turn over, and men eating worms as they clutched a half loaf of bread purely because they had to eat worms to live and now could scarcely tell the difference. Piles of corpses, naked and obscene, with a woman too weak to stand propping herself against them as she cooked the food we had given her over an open fire; men and women crouching down just anywhere in the open relieving themselves of the dysentery which was scouring their bowels, a woman standing stark naked washing herself with some issue soap in water from a tank in which the remains of a child floated. It was shortly after the British Red Cross a ~ Imperial War Museum
Oldest Child quotes by Imperial War Museum
The right kind of education consists in understanding the child as he is without imposing upon him an ideal of what we think he should be. To enclose him in the framework of an ideal is to encourage him to conform, which breeds fear and produces in him a constant conflict between what he is and what he should be; and all inward conflicts have their outward manifestations in society. ~ Krishnamurti
Oldest Child quotes by Krishnamurti
'I scrape under a nail and I pull out dirt. I pull off an overlay and I smell urine. It's the rot of their lives seeping into their nailbeds, you see? They can fix their hair and paint their nails and run on a treadmill until they're anorexia's poster child, but they can't fix their lives ... lives of rotting perfection.' ~ Vicki Pettersson
