Needless to say, I personally don't believe fighting should be banned. I don't understand why a relatively small segment of the hockey world feels obligated to ban extracurricular combat when it's so popular elsewhere in American sports. Additionally, the league shouldn't be trying to ban fighting to save the enforcers from hurting themselves. Fighters realize the risks associated with what they do, and they are bound to accept these risks. ~ Brian D'Ambrosio
National Hockey League quotes by Brian D'Ambrosio
I had a lot of fun in those days. It was a great experience being in the Eastern Hockey League for the simple reason that you did not have a staff. ~ John Muckler
National Hockey League quotes by John Muckler
After referees negated a line change that led to Tampa Bay"s winning goal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs: After all these years in the league, am I that stupid that I would put four forwards and one defenseman in a 3-3 tie, in the third period? I think everybody that knows me here knows I"m not that stupid. I might be halfway stupid, but not that stupid. ~ Pat Burns
National Hockey League quotes by Pat Burns
Hockey lends itself to special events, including the Olympic competition: a glorious tournament of the best players in the world, putting on their national jerseys and playing on big rinks with no-goon Olympic rules and referee enforcement. ~ George Vecsey
National Hockey League quotes by George Vecsey
Nate had been born and raised in British Columbia, and Canadians hate, above all things, to offend. It was part of the national consciousness. "Be polite" was an unwritten, unspoken rule, but ingrained into the psyche of an entire country. (Of course, as with any rule, there were exceptions: parts of Quebec, where people maintained the "dismissive to the point of confrontation, with subsequent surrender" mind-set of the French; and hockey, in which any Canadian may, with impunity, slam, pummel, elbow, smack, punch, body-check, and beat the shit out of, with sticks, any other human being, punctuated by profanities, name-calling, questioning parentage, and accusations of bestiality, usually-coincidentally- in French.) ~ Christopher Moore
National Hockey League quotes by Christopher Moore
I think as a Canadian hockey player, you go through it in your mind so many times, being able to stand on that blue line and hear your national anthem play and being a gold medal champion, you dream of that. And then to be able to accomplish that and actually win a gold medal and represent your country its an amazing feeling. ~ Sidney Crosby
National Hockey League quotes by Sidney Crosby
This fastest of all games [hockey] has become almost as much of a national svmbol as the maple leaf. ~ Lester B. Pearson
National Hockey League quotes by Lester B. Pearson
Bob Goodenow will kill me, but if we're going to be realistic about things, probably 75 per cent of the league is overpaid. But we're not paying ourselves. There are people giving it to us and no one is putting a gun to their heads. Something has to be done if we're going to fix this. ~ Brett Hull
National Hockey League quotes by Brett Hull
If you're going to play hockey now, you have to be able to play. If you have the ability to fight and play, you're an unbelievable commodity. But if you can only fight, there might be six of those guys left in the league, and I can guarantee they're going fast. ~ Brett Hull
National Hockey League quotes by Brett Hull
I am a sports enthusiast, and if given an opportunity, I want to be a sportsman, even today. I want to promote the sport that is indigenous to India. Kabaddi is a matter of national pride. Why can't cricket, hockey, football and kabaddi be given equal platforms and co-exist? I believe that can happen. ~ Abhishek Bachchan
National Hockey League quotes by Abhishek Bachchan
I try to get to the gym at least a few times a week, hopefully more. I also play hockey in a pickup league. I grew up playing, so it's nice to get on the ice whenever I can. With all that said, everyone should have cheat days or days off. You need to balance the unhealthy with the healthy. ~ Robbie Amell
National Hockey League quotes by Robbie Amell
Bettman is an asshole. A frikkin asshole. I think he's ruined the game of hockey. He's supposed to be impartial. He's supposed to speak for the good of the league, but in my opinion, he's strictly behind the owners. Those 1996 rule changes are a joke ~ Bob Probert
National Hockey League quotes by Bob Probert
Detroit is still seen as the tough city, a city that has a reputation for high crime, ... The tough city thing is fine. Its always had a reputation as that ... You know, Gordie Howe, when I was watching hockey, was the toughest guy in the league playing for the Red Wings. He represented that tough aura. ~ Eugene Levy
National Hockey League quotes by Eugene Levy
We were a minor league team that didn't feed into any majors, in a town that loved just about every sport but ours. We were going nowhere and we knew it, so why not have fun? In the forties, when I was playing, we were officially the most violent team in the country, and that means probably the whole world, and by the way, that's why I could skate with no toes. A figure skater, a speed skater, an NHL forward, sure, you need your toes for control, but all that finesse takes a backseat when all you're trying to do is slam somebody into a wall and break all his teeth. ~ Dan Wells
National Hockey League quotes by Dan Wells
We were hockey gypsies, heading down another gravel road every weekend, plowing into the heart of that magnificent northern landscape. We never gave a thought to being deprived as we travelled, to being shut out of the regular league system. We never gave a thought to being Indian. Different. We only thought of the game and the brotherhood that bound us together off the ice, in the van, on the plank floors of reservation houses, in the truck stop diners where if we'd won we had a little to splurge on a burger and soup before we hit the road again. Small joys. All of them tied together, entwined to form an experience we would not have traded for any other. We were a league of nomads, mad for the game, mad for the road, mad for ice and snow, an Arctic wind on our faces and a frozen puck on the blade of our sticks. ~ Richard Wagamese
National Hockey League quotes by Richard Wagamese
The only way you can check Gretzky is to hit him when he is standing still singing the national anthem. ~ Harry Sinden
National Hockey League quotes by Harry Sinden
When Bobby came into the league he was a rushing defenseman, a goal scorer and a point getter. He just opened the game up to more offence and that's the way the game is played now. ~ Johnny Bucyk
National Hockey League quotes by Johnny Bucyk
Hockey suffers from being compared to itself in ways that other sports are not. Every four years, some of us fawn over Olympic hockey, a great event with bigger rinks, minimal goonishness and national pride in addition to the heightened skills of veritable all-star squads. ~ George Vecsey
National Hockey League quotes by George Vecsey
After returning from his stint in the minors made reference to the movie Slapshot with: I'm happy to be back. It was never my aspiration as a kid to play in the Federal league. ~ Glenn Healy
National Hockey League quotes by Glenn Healy
We're going to be the best in the league at something. We're deep in anthem singers. ~ Barry Trotz
National Hockey League quotes by Barry Trotz
A prophet's task is to reveal the fault lines hidden beneath the comfortable surface of the worlds we invent for ourselves, the national myths as well as the little lies and delusions of control and security that get us through the day. And Jeremiah does this better than anyone. ~ Kathleen Norris
National Hockey League quotes by Kathleen Norris
I am not saying that during the Second World War Germany did not, under the leadership of the National Socialist government, commit crimes. ~ Ernst Zundel
National Hockey League quotes by Ernst Zundel
We are particularly frustrated that so much of our politics today consists of lines first written during the clashes, domestic and foreign, of the 1960s. This "Groundhog Day" approach to replaying the culture war's tropes is perhaps nowhere in greater evidence than in how Americans talk about patriotism. Patriotism, as an idea, has been co-opted over the course of a generation by right-wingers who use the flag not as a symbol of transcendent national unity, but as a sectarian cudgel against the hippies, Francophiles, free-lovers and tree-huggers who constitute their caricature of the American left. The American left, for its part, has been so beaten down by this star-spangled caricature that it has largely ceded the very notion of patriotism to the right. As a result, the first reaction of far too many progressives to any talk of patriotism is automatic, allergic recoil. Needless to say, this reaction simply tightens the screws of the right's imprisoning caricature. ~ Eric Liu
National Hockey League quotes by Eric Liu
Despite its convict history, the Australian state of Tasmania is no longer associated only with austerity and privation. Nowadays it's a sybarite's nirvana surrounded by some of the most untouched nature on the planet. "Mainland Tassie," as the Tasmanians who live on the outer islands call it, covers 35,000 square miles, and 45% of that is preserved in bio-reserves, national parks or World Heritage sites. On the other 55%, there are just 515,000 people. ~ Anonymous
National Hockey League quotes by Anonymous
I went to national piano competitions and did that whole circuit. Then I played professionally to support myself when I moved out to LA. ~ Alicia Witt
National Hockey League quotes by Alicia Witt
Politicians must be simple and clear about how their ideas will serve the national cause. We can no longer use the complexity of today's problems as an excuse for inaction, rhyme or rhetoric that does not meet the challenges before us. ~ Alan Siegel
National Hockey League quotes by Alan Siegel
Love taught me to die with dignity that I might come forth anew in splendor. Born once of flesh, then again of fire, I was reborn a third time to the sound of my name humming haikus in heaven's mouth. ~ Aberjhani
National Hockey League quotes by Aberjhani
Really, I learned a long time ago that in the National Football League, paper doesn't mean anything. Football teams are created on the football field. ~ Mike McCarthy
National Hockey League quotes by Mike McCarthy
I wasn't a jock in school, and by the 10th grade, when I was in boarding school I was carrying water buckets for the girls' hockey team. I was the kid with long hair and glasses and acne trying to learn how to play guitar and piano in the music center. I was not an athlete past the age of 13 or 14 when they start throwing the ball really fast. ~ Michael Weatherly
National Hockey League quotes by Michael Weatherly
At Liberty, I've met hundreds of people whose lives have been made better and more virtuous by their faith. But I've also seen a process whereby some reasonable, humble believers are taught to put their religious goals above everything else. This is how you get gentle Christian kids condemning strangers to hell in Daytona Beach, and it's how you end up with a group of Liberty students sitting around a prayer room talking about the ideological crops that can be reaped from a national tragedy. ~ Kevin Roose
National Hockey League quotes by Kevin Roose
You have to believe you're great. You have to have an air about you. My success wasn't because I was a great talent, but because I wanted it more than anybody else. Every minute I step on that field, I want to prove I'm the best player in the league. ~ Brett Favre
National Hockey League quotes by Brett Favre
We'll explain the appeal of curling to you if you explain the appeal of the National Rifle Association to us. ~ Andy Barrie
National Hockey League quotes by Andy Barrie
There is no reason why agreement on particular points should not be both possible and advantageous to the so-called neutrals and to one or more of the blocs, either existing or in the process of formation, within the League of Nations. ~ Hjalmar Branting
National Hockey League quotes by Hjalmar Branting
And if I want to get involved in choosing sides, I usually pick hockey or football. ~ Dierks Bentley
National Hockey League quotes by Dierks Bentley
The Canadian franchises and Canada as a market for NHL hockey has always been a priority for us. ~ Gary Bettman
National Hockey League quotes by Gary Bettman
She isn't simply unafraid of a good fight, she lives for it, and will often actively go looking for a fight. This is what differentiates your run-of-the-mill fighter from a crusader. The Warrior Princess Submissive is no shrinking violet. She is that dyed-in-the-wool Republican who attends the Democratic National Convention wearing a Rand Paul t-shirt. She is the African-American woman who invites herself to a Ku Klux Klan rally without a hood... and hands out business cards to everyone there. She is the woman who invites the Jehovah's Witnesses into her home and feeds them dinner, just for the opportunity to defend Christmas - even though she may be a Pagan.
When the other girls in high school or college were trying out for the pep squad or cheerleading, she set her sights on the debate team. While her friends agonize over how to "fit in" socially, she is war gaming ideas on how to change society to fit her ideals and principles. Are you someone she considers to be immoral or evil? Run. She will eviscerate you. ~ Michael Makai
National Hockey League quotes by Michael Makai
He cannot deny a certain relief in being able to sift through academic tomes, fulfilling his journalistic duty without having to barge past security guards at the Arab League or grab man-on-the-street from women at the market. This library work is easily his favorite part of reporting so far. ~ Tom Rachman
National Hockey League quotes by Tom Rachman
The business case for diverse employment is not a matter we can ignore. When the business case merges with values and national objectives, this serves as a wake up call for us all. We cannot ignore the opportunity; we cannot ignore the commitment. ~ Ofra Strauss
National Hockey League quotes by Ofra Strauss
Only recently, during the nineteenth century, and then only in Europe, do we meet forms of the state which have been created by a deliberate national feeling. ~ Christian Lous Lange
