Narrative storytelling enables us to derive ideas from the disparate facts, incongruent motives, conflicting emotions, and other absurdities inherent in living dynamically. The narrative that we select to tell our life story acts as a lens that assigns value to our shape shifting experiences: it pulls humor from catastrophes; it places a patina of irony over our checkered history; it allows us to explore our pessimism; and it provides a platform from which vantage point we can optimistically view the future. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Narrative Identity quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
I haven't been disingenuous in what I've said describing my perception of "truth" and "reality." Certainly, I understand what is generally meant to be the "truth," I understand this notion, but it's not something I trust in, OK?

The only answer that feels true (I said feels, not is) is that yes, the character Minnie is me, but she is not me. She is a projection of some tumult which originates within me, but she is not me. I use elements of myself, including my likeness, for the character, perhaps as Cindy Sherman uses herself in her work, but like Sherman's photographs, the work itself is not any more about the creator than it is about everyone. I won't deny that Minnie does things I have done, and that things happen to her that have happened to me, but she, unlike me, having been created, is who she is and will remain so, unchanged now. I make no attempt to create "documentary." There is a process of dissociation that takes place when I make a story, I make creative decisions in a fugue state that I could hardly describe to you, but the end result is, I hope, a story with some meaning or resonance, something created, with a beginning, a middle and an end, an encapsulation of feeling and impression, but in no way a documentary of anything other than an "emotional truth."

If I told most interviewers that my work is "true" and that it is based on real events that occurred in my life, they would more readily accept this than they do the explanation I try to ~ Phoebe Gloeckner
Narrative Identity quotes by Phoebe Gloeckner
The narrative constructs the identity of the character, what can be called his or her narrative identity, in constructing that of the story told. It is the identity of the story that makes the identity of the character. ~ Paul Ricoeur
Narrative Identity quotes by Paul Ricoeur
All profound changes in consciousness, by their very nature, bring with them characteristic amnesias. Out of such oblivions, in specific historical circumstances, spring narratives… The photograph… is only the most peremptory of a huge modern accumulation of documentary evidence… which simultaneously records a certain apparent continuity and emphasizes its loss from memory. Out of this estrangement comes a conception of personhood, identity… which, because it cannot be "remembered", must be narrated. ~ Benedict Anderson
Narrative Identity quotes by Benedict Anderson
Writing a sincere narrative account of personal adversities and misfortunes is one way to become acquainted with the rifts of a person's inmost self, the smothered pieces of want that lie separate and undetected amid the customs, habits, vices, and tedium that encases us in the hubbub of daily living. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Narrative Identity quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
That would make it easy for Amara. Not having a choice was always easy. It was always safer. However bad things were, you kept your head down and did as you were told in order to avoid worse.

The world always wanted people like her to believe those lies.

You were never safe as long as you were at someone else's whim.

Amara's eyes met Cilla's, dark and beaten and haunted.

Not having a choice was the worst thing in the world.

Amara pushed the knife down. Nolan didn't stop her. And in that moment, with her enemy's knife in her own hand, a point pressing on Cilla's arm, Cilla's skin familiar against hers, relief sneaked up on her and refused to let go. Because what she'd told Cilla wasn't true. It wasn't that she couldn't go back to her old life; she could. If she went back, she'd hate herself, but it meant survival. It might be worth it or it might not be, and she'd never have to find out because it would never happen. She wasn't going back.

It wasn't because of what Maart wanted, or because of what Cilla asked, or because of what Jorn said. She'd made the choice. It was hers alone. This or nothing.

Blood welled up from Cilla's arm. Amara let the knife clatter to the ground. She reached for the cut. She was almost smiling now, a desperate smile that had her lips trembling, that came with tears burning her eyes.

This or nothing. ~ Corinne Duyvis
Narrative Identity quotes by Corinne Duyvis
True love is a different story. When it happens, individuals usually feel in touch with each other's core identity. Embarking on such a relationship is frightening precisely because we feel there is no place to hide. We are known. All the ecstasy that we feel emerges as this love nurtures us and challenges us to grow and transform. ~ Bell Hooks
Narrative Identity quotes by Bell Hooks
A willingness to let go of an old self and allow creative thoughts to remake a person into a better version of oneself requires an act of courage. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Narrative Identity quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
Identity does not come to us without journey, because to learn who we are means we face difficult truths in our own lives and imagine what life might look like as those truths work themselves out inside of us. ~ Kaitlin B. Curtice
Narrative Identity quotes by Kaitlin B. Curtice
Buy it for anyone you know who cries in the shower, who drinks in the morning, whose life only has meaning when they're asleep and dreaming that they're somebody else. They will find comfort here. And if they don't, it's not your fault. They've always been this way. Some people are just all banged up. Good for you for trying to help. You're a great person. Give yourself a hand. ~ Paul Neilan
Narrative Identity quotes by Paul Neilan
Say what you will about it, Hell is story friendly. If you want a compelling story, put your protagonist among the damned. The mechanisms of hell are nicely attuned to the mechanisms of narrative. Not so the pleasures of Paradise. Paradise is not a story. It's about what happens when the stories are over. ~ Charles Baxter
Narrative Identity quotes by Charles Baxter
Perhaps Isaiah 43:2 expresses it best: When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Why does this matter? Because if we believe God doesn't want us to have a good life, then we will stay in places he never intended. We will settle for less than he has for us. We will make hard times our identity rather than a stop along the way. ~ Holley Gerth
Narrative Identity quotes by Holley Gerth
The narrative image has more dimensions than the painted image - literature is more complex than painting. Initially, this complexity represents a disadvantage, because the reader has to concentrate much more than when they're looking at a canvas. It gives the author, on the other hand, the opportunity to feel like a creator: they can offer their readers a world in which there's room for everyone, as every reader has their own reading and vision. ~ Dumitru Tepeneag
Narrative Identity quotes by Dumitru Tepeneag
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you. ~ Joy Harjo
Narrative Identity quotes by Joy Harjo
Nationalism as a thesis confuses (almost always deliberately) certain legitimate desires with illegitimate ones. People like to run their own affairs, and most people value the culture they were raised in, are proud of its achievements and wish it well; a significant degree of their sense of personal and group identity derives from it. All this is unexceptionable. But nationalists try to persuade their fellows that the existence of other groups and cultures somehow represents a challenge, and sometimes a threat, to what the natives of the home culture value. (From: Toward the Light of Liberty) ~ A.C. Grayling
Narrative Identity quotes by A.C. Grayling
I said, yet again, for Germany, Europe is not only indispensable, it is part and parcel of our identity. We've always said German unity, European unity and integration, that's two parts of one and the same coin. But we want, obviously, to boost our competitiveness. ~ Angela Merkel
Narrative Identity quotes by Angela Merkel
History is a set of skills rather than a narrative. ~ Hilary Mantel
Narrative Identity quotes by Hilary Mantel
Between the experience of living a normal life at this moment on the planet and the public narratives being offered to give a sense to that life, the empty space, the gap, is enormous. ~ John Berger
Narrative Identity quotes by John Berger
I don't know how video game narrative works. ~ Tom Bissell
Narrative Identity quotes by Tom Bissell
Human identity is no longer defined by what one does but rather by what one owns. ~ Jimmy Carter
Narrative Identity quotes by Jimmy Carter
When, in the third book, we do learn the identity of the Blue Rose murderer, the information comes in a muted, nearly off-hand manner, and the man has died long before. ~ Peter Straub
Narrative Identity quotes by Peter Straub
And I don't want 'not a mother' to be part of who I am- for my identity to be the negative of someone else's positive identity. Then maybe instead of being 'not a mother' I could be not 'not a mother.' I could be not not.
If I am not not, then I am what I am. The negative cancels out the negative and I simply am. I am what I positively am, for the not before the not shields me from being simply not a mother. And to those who would say, You're not a mother, I would reply, 'In fact, I am not not a mother.' By which I mean I am not 'not a mother.' Yet someone who is called a mother could also say, 'In fact, I am not not a mother.' Which means she is a mother, for the not cancels our the not. To be not not is what the mothers can be, and what the women who are not mothers can be. This is the term we can share. In this way, we can be the same (157-58). ~ Sheila Heti
Narrative Identity quotes by Sheila Heti
Imagination and recollection of cherished memories of the pastimes are closely related. We do not recall memories verbatim. As our perspective changes regarding our place in the world, we shift through our recollections and revise our memories. People possess the ability to edit their memories by repressing unbearable episodes and highlighting incidences that generate fond memories. How we perceive and comprehend ourselves in the past, the present, and the future shapes our evolving sense of self. Humankind's ability to repress unpleasant events and humankind's ability to act as the solo editors of our germinating awareness of the world that we occupy is ultimately responsible for activating our metamorphosing sense of identity. ~ Kilroy J. Oldster
Narrative Identity quotes by Kilroy J. Oldster
I'm not some sort of tormented soul looking for an identity in the roles I take. I became an actress because I just love dressing up and playing. ~ Talulah Riley
Narrative Identity quotes by Talulah Riley
What a long time it can take to become the person one has always been! How often in the process we mask ourselves in faces that are not our own. How much dissolving and shaking of ego we must endure before we discover our deep identity - the true self within every human being that is the seed of authentic vocation. ~ Parker J. Palmer
Narrative Identity quotes by Parker J. Palmer
The family, as the fundamental and essential educating community, is the privileged means for transmitting the religious and cultural values which help the person to acquire his or her own identity. Founded on love and open to the gift of life, the family contains in itself the very future of society; its most special task is to contribute effectively to a future of peace. ~ Pope John Paul II
Narrative Identity quotes by Pope John Paul II
No matter the nature of your individuality, you can nurture a better identity and have a mature positively rewarding life. ~ Ifeanyi Enoch Onuoha
Narrative Identity quotes by Ifeanyi Enoch Onuoha
Gilly had decided that this was a dream. The Witches' Carnival didn't exist in the real world. And the Gilly who existed in the real world was not brave or cunning enough to have done everything that she'd done in the past day. The real Gilly was not beautiful enough to be lying in bed beside a woman like Maggie. Gilly had decided this was a dream, and also that she'd let that real Gilly, deep asleep somewhere in the outskirts of Birmingham, wither away and never wake up.
Already, Gilly could see herself arcing across the earth bright as a comet, moving too fast for the Ashleys and Tracyes, the thousand tiny insults and humiliations of the waking world, to ever catch. ~ Kristopher Reisz
Narrative Identity quotes by Kristopher Reisz
A culture is much more than politics. It is a national identity encompassing education, fine and popular arts and entertainment, science, physical and mental health, leisure activities, friend and family relationships, values, ambitions. . .everything that constitutes the basic shared core values of any country. In our case, the core value of individualism has been the common denominator linking all other aspects of our cultural distinctiveness; it is what makes The United States "America." Viable only where Liberty reigns, valuing the sovereignty of individuals is precisely what makes America exceptional; therefore, it is the culture that warrants attention because the actual, underlying disease invading the mental health of our country has arisen not from the government directly but from the injection of deleterious ideas into our entire individualistic social-economic system. Proposals ~ Alexandra York
Narrative Identity quotes by Alexandra York
I guess maybe I try to make movies that are closer to real life than are many Hollywood movies. But I still try to stay within a commercial narrative, a contemporary American vernacular. ~ Alexander Payne
Narrative Identity quotes by Alexander Payne
I will throw all my best efforts into it, my thoughts and political observations, but ultimately I want to create a narrative that keeps you turning the pages and leaves you with a sense that this thing has a reason for being there. ~ Frank Miller
Narrative Identity quotes by Frank Miller
In the Shadow of Slavery covers two and a half centuries of black life in New York City, and skillfully interweaves the categories of race and class as they affected the formation of African American identity. Leslie Harris has made a major contribution to our understanding of the black experience. ~ Eric Foner
Narrative Identity quotes by Eric Foner
Maybe demons are defined as anything other than God that tries to tell us who we are. And maybe, just moments after Jesus' baptism, when the devil says to him, "If you are the Son of God ... " he does so because he knows that Jesus is vulnerable to temptation precisely to the degree that he is insecure about his identity and mistrusts his relationship with God. So if God's first move is to give us our identity, then the devil's first move is to throw that identity into question. ~ Nadia Bolz-Weber
Narrative Identity quotes by Nadia Bolz-Weber
But if we are to say anything important, if fiction is to stay relevant and vibrant, then we have to ask the right questions. All art fails if it is asked to be representative - the purpose of fiction is not to replace life anymore than it is meant to support some political movement or ideology. All fiction reinscribes the problematic past in terms of the present, and, if it is significant at all, reckons with it instead of simply making it palatable or pretty. What aesthetic is adequate to the Holocaust, or to the recent tragedy in Haiti? Narrative is not exculpatory - it is in fact about culpability, about recognizing human suffering and responsibility, and so examining what is true in us and about us. If we're to say anything important, we require an art less facile, and editors willing to seek it. ~ Michael Copperman
Narrative Identity quotes by Michael Copperman
Thinking is my fighting. ~ Virginia Woolf
Narrative Identity quotes by Virginia Woolf
Who you want to be is already inside of you waiting for you to confront who you are and tag them in to help you win the battle of the mind. ~ Sanjo Jendayi
Narrative Identity quotes by Sanjo Jendayi
Soon the grizzly was joined by a brown bear, a sun bear, and a beaver suffering from an identity crisis of magnificent proportion ~ Cameron Dokey
Narrative Identity quotes by Cameron Dokey
Illness might progressively vanish so might identity. Grief might be diminished, but so might tenderness. Traumas might be erased but so might history. Infirmities might disappear, but so might vulnerability. Chance would become mitigated, but so, inevitably, would choice. ~ Siddhartha Mukherjee
Narrative Identity quotes by Siddhartha Mukherjee
It is definitely annoying that straight (and white, for that matter) is the default, and that the only people who have to think about their identity are the ones who don't fit that mold. Straight people really should have to come out, and the more awkward it is, the better. Awkwardness should be a requirement. ~ Becky Albertalli
Narrative Identity quotes by Becky Albertalli
Angie was a border crosser, a wetback, a worker in the immigrant sweatshop they call this city. On days like this I understand her like a woman instead of a child. Everybody thought she was a whore. She wasn't. She tried to step across the border of who she was and who she might be. They wouldn't let her. She didn't believe it herself so she stepped across into a whole other country. ~ Dionne Brand
Narrative Identity quotes by Dionne Brand
She was the same person I had known. Had always known. Just a version that was more completely her. ~ Mackenzi Lee
Narrative Identity quotes by Mackenzi Lee
Roy writes: When you no longer need to feign an identity that isn't yours, you'll discover confidence and the ability to say, "This is who I am," and speak out on any issue that stirs your heart and mind. By announcing your presence, others will come out to you who you didn't previously know shared your nontheism. You'll finally be able to meet other nontheists and build relationships based on truth and honesty. You can love and be loved by people who know the real you. No matter what you've been told, that person deserves to see the light of day. ~ Roy Speckhardt
Narrative Identity quotes by Roy Speckhardt
Every fundamentalism focuses on end times, and Armageddon is, in a sense, a rhetorical trope, an emphatic and overwhelming conclusion, meant to wrap up and make tidy the mistaken wanderings of history. For a fundamentalist the end is one of the forms desire takes, a passion no different from lust or avarice, intense with longing and the need for fulfillment and relief. It's like they're horny for apocalypse. They get off on denouements, which partly explains why Hell House never amounted to much more than a series of murderous conclusions. It focused only on that part of a story where life finds itself fated. Inside every act a judgement was coiled. Real people with their ragged and uncertain lives, their stumbling desires, their bleak or blessed futures, would only break into the narrative, complicating the story, dragging it on endlessly. ~ Charles D'Ambrosio
Narrative Identity quotes by Charles D'Ambrosio
The recognition of a distinct 'national identity' among members of the Body of Christ can keep before us our ties with Christians who live under different secular governments, with whom we have bonds that transcend and override our commitments to governments and groups outside the church. ~ Richard J. Mouw
Narrative Identity quotes by Richard J. Mouw
I am not given to making sense out of life - or coming up with some grand narrative on it - other than to measure it by what you think you want to do in life. As for me, I have done what I had wanted to, to the best of my ability. I am satisfied. ~ Lee Kuan Yew
Narrative Identity quotes by Lee Kuan Yew
Individuality and creativity are slowly dampened by a normal job with normal people. ~ Fennel Hudson
