We need to develop within our children and young people the capacity to respect the cultures and beliefs of the different groups that make up our society; and we need to develop the resolve to treat each other justly. Secondly, we must eliminate, so far as any society can, the under-achievement of many of our children and young people from all sections of the community. We need to raise the performance of all pupils and to tackle the obstacles to higher achievement which are common to all. But we also need to tackle those special factors which additionally may contribute to the under-achievement of many members of our ethnic minorities. ~ Keith Joseph
Naramata Community quotes by Keith Joseph
Until recently, attempts to resolve the contradictions created by urbanization, centralization, bureaucratic growth and statification were viewed as a vain counterdrift to "progress" - a counterdrift that could be dismissed as chimerical and reactionary. The anarchist was regarded as a forlorn visionary, a social outcast, filled with nostalgia for the peasant village or the medieval commune. His yearnings for a decentralized society and for a humanistic community at one with nature and the needs of the individual - the spontaneous individual, unfettered by authority - were viewed as the reactions of a romantic, of a declassed craftsman or an intellectual "misfit." His protest against centralization and statification seemed all the less persuasive because it was supported primarily by ethical considerations - by Utopian, ostensibly "unrealistic," notions of what man could be, not by what he was. In response to this protest, opponents of anarchist thought - liberals, rightists and authoritarian "leftists" - argued that they were the voices of historic reality, that their statist and centralist notions were rooted in the objective, practical world.
Time is not very kind to the conflict of ideas. Whatever may have been the validity of libertarian and non-libertarian views a few years ago, historical development has rendered virtually all objections to anarchist thought meaningless today. The modern city and state, the massive coal-steel technology of the Industrial Revoluti ~ Murray Bookchin
Naramata Community quotes by Murray Bookchin
The problem with all of you is you think in isolation instead of realizing we are one community, when one of us falls, we all fall. ~ Poppet
Naramata Community quotes by Poppet
Defend the church. Defend the family. Defend the non-profit community. Defend them against a government that wants to weaken them. ~ Rick Santorum
Naramata Community quotes by Rick Santorum
people spend less time in the office and have more time to themselves. Their need to belong to a tribe can be satisfied with hobbies or in community activities and doesn't have to be met in the office. ~ Ricardo Semler
Naramata Community quotes by Ricardo Semler
The president wants more tax money in Washington. I want more money left in the communities, particularly poor communities, particularly communities that have high unemployment. ~ Rand Paul
Naramata Community quotes by Rand Paul
It is only when you understand the extent to which you have been traumatized - even if outside of your awareness - that you can effectively
prepare for and, yes, welcome the demise of empire and its ghastly assaults on your soul and the earth community. ~ Carolyn Baker
Naramata Community quotes by Carolyn Baker
If we want a beloved community, we must stand for justice, have recognition for difference without attaching difference to privilege. ~ Bell Hooks
Naramata Community quotes by Bell Hooks
The love, support, and respect the members of the theater community have for one another is unparalleled. Say what you want about us wacky drama-types, but one thing that makes our business special is our loyalty, our fierce commitment to one another, and our mutual respect. ~ Monica Raymund
Naramata Community quotes by Monica Raymund
Create your own community of liberation. From this moment on, direct your most concerted efforts, your best work, and your greatest feats of imagination toward creating the impossible community, and do so first of all precisely where you are, with those around you. ~ John P. Clark
Naramata Community quotes by John P. Clark
In one sense the cause of suicide is simple: overwhelming pain. This overwhelming pain, however, is the aggregate of thousands of pains. Any hurt that we have ever suffered, if it remains consciously or unconsciously lodged within us, can contribute to suicide. This may range from being an incest victim 50 years ago, to losing a job 10 years ago, to having a car battery stolen yesterday. The pains come from everywhere: ill-health, family, peers, school, work, community, caregivers. For each suicide there was a finite point at which this aggregate became too much. Although "The straw that broke the back," is frequently an accurate metaphor, no one pain is ever the cause of suicide. Suicidal pain is decomposable into thousands of pains, and nearly all of these pains are decomposable into painful constituents. Sexual abuse, job loss, and personal theft each have numerous painful constituents. The search for the single cause is a fundamentally wrongheaded approach to the understanding and prevention of suicide.
It is inaccurate to say simply that pain causes suicide, since a level of pain that is lethal for one person may not be lethal for someone with greater resources. Similarly, deficiency in resources cannot be regarded as the cause of suicide, since two people may have equal resources and unequal pain. Our resources may also come from everywhere; even such trivial distractions as going to a movie can contribute to coping with suicidal pain. ~ David L. Conroy
Naramata Community quotes by David L. Conroy
One cannot withdraw from the life of the community. Injury to one member of it cannot fail to be the concern of all. ~ Patricia Wentworth
Naramata Community quotes by Patricia Wentworth
No, I heard some of the staff talking. She's all bad, that one. They kicked her out of the Lollipop Guild for theft, yeah? And she did community service for bitch-slapping the Mayor of Munchkinland.
Alexander ~ Melodie Ramone
Naramata Community quotes by Melodie Ramone
Okay. Well, firstly, Marcel is not my mortal enemy - he is my friend, albeit one who is unaware that I'm trying to sabotage his hold over the supernatural community of the French Quarter, but a friend nonetheless. And secondly, I daggered Elijah in order to gain Marcel's trust. If I had known he would place my brother in the hands of a particularly nasty teenaged witch, I certainly would have weighed my options a bit differently. And thirdly, sister, please. ~ Klaus Mikaelson
Naramata Community quotes by Klaus Mikaelson
If we could see ourselves ... as we really are, we should see ourselves in a world of spiritual natures, our community which neither began at birth nor will end with the death of the body. ~ Immanuel Kant
Naramata Community quotes by Immanuel Kant
It feels good to watch TV and know that you're being represented on somebody's network and for certain communities, it feels even better to know that you're being depicted truthfully. ~ Aeriel Miranda
Naramata Community quotes by Aeriel Miranda
In the 'Angel' days, all there was was a community that was like a chat room. If you were looking for feedback, you had to look for it. ~ J. August Richards
Naramata Community quotes by J. August Richards
The turning point in our 200-year present is pregnant with enormous potential to constructively impact affect the fundamental well-being of the human community. However, contrary to the range of scientific and political projections, this turn in humanity's journey does not rotate on which specific forms of governing political, economic, or social structures we devise. ~ John Paul Lederach
Naramata Community quotes by John Paul Lederach
I would have been trying to pitch a concept about my community to someone that most likely was not a part of that community. ~ Lamar Tyler
Naramata Community quotes by Lamar Tyler
Aristocracy: A combination of many powerful men, for the purpose of maintaining their own particular interests. It is consequently a concentration of all the most effective parts of a community for a given end, hence its energy, efficiency and success. ~ James F. Cooper
Naramata Community quotes by James F. Cooper
Meaningful learning in a community requires both participation and reification to be present and in interplay. Sharing artifacts without engaging in discussions and activities around them impairs the ability to negotiate the meaning of what is being shared. Interacting without producing artifacts makes learning depend on individual interpretation and memory and can limit its depth, extent, and impact. Both participation and reification are necessary. Sometimes one process may dominate the other, or the two processes may not be well integrated. The challenge of this polarity is for communities to successfully cycle between the two. ~ Etienne Wenger
Naramata Community quotes by Etienne Wenger
When the riots happened in L.A., they didn't go to Beverly Hills to trash Rodeo Drive. They trashed their own neighborhoods. It's one of those tragedies that we always see in riot situations, where the only thing that they can lash out against is the stuff that's right there in their own communities. They destroy the very things that help them survive in their own community. There is a level of futility in that. ~ Samuel L. Jackson
Naramata Community quotes by Samuel L. Jackson
America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known. ~ Pat Buchanan
Naramata Community quotes by Pat Buchanan
What does freedom mean if we accept the fundamental premise that humans are social beings, raised in certain social and historical contexts and belonging to particular communities that shape their desires and understandings of the world? ~ Lila Abu-Lughod
Naramata Community quotes by Lila Abu-Lughod
Many theaters are tackling the multifaceted work of black writers - established and emerging. Now the next step is for them to bring in audiences of color and continue to go out to our community and create a continuous connection that extends beyond the one black show in the season. ~ Katori Hall
Naramata Community quotes by Katori Hall
Imagine the consequences if Saddam fails to comply and we fail to act. Saddam will be emboldened, believing the international community has lost its will. He will rebuild his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. And some day, some way, I am certain, he will use that arsenal again, as he has ten times since 1983. ~ Sandy Berger
Naramata Community quotes by Sandy Berger
Research shows that children do better in school and are less likely to drop out when fathers are involved. Engaged parents can strengthen communities, mentor and tutor students, and demonstrate through their actions how much they value their children's education. ~ Arne Duncan
Naramata Community quotes by Arne Duncan
As a kid who wasn't into sports, at school I felt almost alienated at times, whereas in the theatre community there was this amazing sense of camaraderie. Early on, we would go to rehearsals with my dad and I was like the mascot for the backstage crew. That was a big part of my childhood, so I dreamed of one day doing a play in London. ~ Zach Braff
Naramata Community quotes by Zach Braff
1883 ... The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good. ~ The Catholic Church
Naramata Community quotes by The Catholic Church
It's very easy to make fun of George W.Bush, but that ain't going to do it. What we have to do is knock on doors and go into communities where there are people who disagree with us on certain issues. And we have to talk to them. They're our friends. They're our allies. They're our co-workers. We can't see them as enemies. ~ Bernie Sanders
Naramata Community quotes by Bernie Sanders
People are happiest when they are giving, they are saddest when they are just taking. And that is the core message of community. ~ Kevin Rudd
Naramata Community quotes by Kevin Rudd
Humor can help churches humble. It puts the community in touch with its inevitable limitations as a human organization, and its fundamental reliance to God. That leads us to God through the gateway of humility. ~ James Martin
Naramata Community quotes by James Martin
Competitive individualism militates against the experience of community, and that lack of community is a centrally important factor in contemporaneous anxiety. ~ Rollo May
Naramata Community quotes by Rollo May
Social Ecology:
The notion that man must dominate nature emerges directly from the domination of man by man ... But it was not until organic community relation ... dissolved into market relationships that the planet itself was reduced to a resource for exploitation. This centuries-long tendency finds its most exacerbating development in modern capitalism. Owing to its inherently competitive nature, bourgeois society not only pits humans against each other, it also pits the mass of humanity against the natural world. Just as men are converted into commodities, so every aspect of nature is converted into a commodity, a resource to be manufactured and merchandised wantonly. ... The plundering of the human spirit by the market place is paralleled by the plundering of the earth by capital. ~ Murray Bookchin
Naramata Community quotes by Murray Bookchin
The same families married the same families until relationships were hopelessly entangled and the members of the community looked monotonously alike. ~ Harper Lee
Naramata Community quotes by Harper Lee
If memory is the thread of personal identity, history is the thread of community identity. ~ Carter Lindberg
Naramata Community quotes by Carter Lindberg
I wandered past the stacks of drying wood, thinking about how many great skills the world had lost, how many things of value had passed without any of us even noticing. The old men with their chisels and handsaws would have once been the most highly paid members of their community and what had we put in their place? Financial engineers and young currency traders. ~ Terry Hayes
Naramata Community quotes by Terry Hayes
The dance community suddenly came alive with programs like 'So You Think You Can Dance,' 'America's Best Dance Crew' and 'Dancing With The Stars.' ~ Nigel Lythgoe
Naramata Community quotes by Nigel Lythgoe
She is in love with herself and every ounce of it. ~ Nidhi M. Jhaveri
Naramata Community quotes by Nidhi M. Jhaveri
Without taking enforcement actions against all criminal aliens, programs such as Secure Communities may result in large numbers of identified criminal aliens being released back into the society which, of course, is an unacceptable outcome for our communities. ~ Candice S. Miller
Naramata Community quotes by Candice S. Miller
CEOs should be measured by the value they create into the community, the shareholders and the members of the company. ~ Miguel Reynolds Brandao
Naramata Community quotes by Miguel Reynolds Brandao
If u desire to grow in your relationship w God - don't do it alone. Find a community of people heading in the same direction. ~ Andy Mineo
Naramata Community quotes by Andy Mineo
The foundations of civilization are no stronger and no more enduring than the corporate integrity of the homes on which they rest. If the home deteriorates, civilization will crumble and fall. ~ Billy Graham
Naramata Community quotes by Billy Graham
I think my experience at the University of Chicago, working in the civil rights movement, working in the peace movement, working with community organizations, did a lot to influence the politics that I have. ~ Bernie Sanders
Naramata Community quotes by Bernie Sanders
Poverty is not something people impose on themselves for want of effort and community organisation. It is constructed by divisive and discriminatory laws, inflexible organisations, acquisitive ideologies of wealth, a deeply rooted class system and policies which serve privilege in the short term and destroy society in the long term. ~ Pete Townshend
Naramata Community quotes by Pete Townshend
Great food, like all art, enhances and reflects a community's vitality, growth and solidarity. Yet history bears witness that great cuisines spring only from healthy local agriculture. ~ Rick Bayless
Naramata Community quotes by Rick Bayless
In India, at the community level, young men are playing an absolutely essential role in changing the cultural norms and deeply held practices concerning women. They are doing this in a way that not only empowers women and girls, but really empowers the young men as well. ~ Melanne Verveer
Naramata Community quotes by Melanne Verveer
I think that in the Christian community, we're lacking a lot of things, and I don't know that it's just children's role models. ~ Willie Aames
