"How can you be a who if you're not a what?"

Middle Grade quotes by Robyn Mundell
There are only three motives for all crimes. Tibbs: money, power, and love. Sometimes those things get muddled together, of course, and you could argue that hunger is a bloody good motivator as well, but one might lump that in with love of self or love of others or love of food, and---well, never mind all that. Pass the pickled radishes. - Inspector Percival Pensive, The Case of the Gilded Guardian ~ Jessica Lawson
Middle Grade quotes by Jessica Lawson
... whenever you were in a fix or at a crossroads in an investigation, there were always two choices: to do nothing and worry, or to take some sort of action and deal with its associated risks. ~ Jessica Lawson

Middle Grade quotes by Allyson Kennedy
Let me out, witch," growled Alice. She began to hum off key.

Somehow the painted door now stood open. Blaise was following Livia through it, past Throgmorton's outstretched arm. Sunni shed her slippers and hurried after them, still not quite believing they were walking through what she had thought was only paint on a wall. ~ Teresa Flavin
Middle Grade quotes by Teresa Flavin
That's it, Skyco. That is the way to be a hunter. Never be in a hurry, never rush things. Wait until the prey is within your grasp, then strike swiftly and strike hard. Don't miss or it may be a long time before another opportunity appears. ~ Jennifer Frick-Ruppert
Middle Grade quotes by Jennifer Frick-Ruppert

Middle Grade quotes by Robyn Mundell
Lucas crept around the building to the back parking lot. And there it was, just like he had seen from the roof - a baby lying in a shopping cart. Lucas's mind went negative. What if the kid was dead? He tried to think if he had ever seen a dead person before. He'd never been to a funeral, and he knew he had never seen a dead baby. And he definitely didn't want to.
His heart pounded in his chest.
Lucas walked, almost tiptoed, toward the shopping cart. The last of the parking lot lights flickered out, leav-ing only the early morning sun. He moved across the blacktop, making sure not to step on a white line. At this moment he needed all the luck he could muster. As he got closer to the cart, he held his breath and swallowed. Then he grabbed the shopping cart handle and looked over into the basket.
He gasped. ~ Paul Aertker
Middle Grade quotes by Paul Aertker
He paused in the hallway, sniffing the air. He scowled, sniffed some more. He pressed an intercom button on the wall.
"Betty, I distinctly smell sewage. Could you get a plumber out here ASAP?"
Several curly hairs fluttered in the air after he was gone.
I clutched at the arm of the dentist chair.
"This isn't a joke, Tub! I'm in trouble. We're all in trouble, the whole town, the whole world! You have no clue. You have no idea what kind of things we're dealing with here. There's a whole land of
~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
Where are we?" Ni asked.
"This is my work place and the center of
Universe as well." Simone said.
"Do you mean the tower is in the center of Universe?" Ni asked
"I mean that we are both in space and inside the tower at the same time."
"Why is it so dark here?" Ni asked.
"At the beginning, it is always dark." Simone replied, "Then everything comes into existence little by little.
Even Light is born out of Darkness. ~ Leora Cika Waldman
Middle Grade quotes by Leora Cika Waldman
Hurry up, Hodgeyboy! You run like a fat badger after Sunday tea." Mibbitwiss ~ Kathy Cyr
Middle Grade quotes by Kathy Cyr
Doing something was better than doing nothing.
Without warning Lucas hit the emergency stop but-ton, and the elevator braked with an uncomfortable jolt. Then he mashed the OPEN DOOR button and punched the door itself. The front doors opened in between the second and first floors.
Lucas's heart pumped in his chest. I hear that baby in the parking lot crying. ~ Paul Aertker
Middle Grade quotes by Paul Aertker
It is hard to imagine the things you have never seen. ~ Steven J. Carroll
Middle Grade quotes by Steven J. Carroll
Fifteen years ago, before we met, Daniela was a comer to Chicago's art scene. She had a studio in Bucktown, showed her work in half-dozen galleries, and had just lined up her first solo exhibition in New York. Then came life. Me. Charlie. A bout of crippling postpartum depression. Derailment. Now she teaches private art lessons to middle-grade students. ~ Blake Crouch
Middle Grade quotes by Blake Crouch
I had learning problems when I was in elementary school, and didn't really start to read well until high school. I never read any of the middle grade classics that were popular when I was young - 'Harriet the Spy', 'Charlotte's Web', 'The Witch of Blackbird Pond', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. ~ Lauren Tarshis
Middle Grade quotes by Lauren Tarshis
Danger is the snack food of a true sleuth. ~ Mac Barnett
Middle Grade quotes by Mac Barnett

After an hour the score was:
Quancita - 34
Radiz - 51
Sally - froglegs
Perla - 9 and 21
Me - hoo-hoo-hooo ~ Joel N. Ross
Middle Grade quotes by Joel N. Ross
When he wasn't busy chasing unseen mice around the academy, Ion spent hours in the Borean Study, searching through dusty books for anything that had to do with the banshee or the Shroud. But finding this anything proved to be difficult as well, especially when the books you're reading have everything to do with something, but certainly nothing to do with your anything. And in trying to find this anything, Ion forgot about a very important, specific thing, which would quickly ruin his Wednesday. ~ Nikolas Lee
Middle Grade quotes by Nikolas Lee
You've been one busy worm! ~ M.L. LeGette
Middle Grade quotes by M.L. LeGette
It was a serious offense to invite a Deep Witch to cross the border of the Five Kingdoms. They had been banished many years before, together with werewolves and sorcerers. ~ Vivian French
Middle Grade quotes by Vivian French
Foamy and frothy,
ribbons white,
reflecting soft sunbeams
to our delight,
foaming in crests,
rippling warm sands,
tracing their patterns
on the dry land.
From The poem, " Seashore ~ Suzy Davies
Middle Grade quotes by Suzy Davies
There were fat cats and skinny cats. The long-tailed and the bobbed. The daring young leapers, and the old windowsill sleepers. Balls of waddling fluff, smooth-coated prowlers, and hairless ones that looked fragile and wise. The tiger-striped, the ring-tailed, and the ones with matching coloured socks and mittens. There were tabbies and calicos. Manx and Persians. Siamese and Bombay. Ragdolls and Birmans. Maine Coons and Russian Blues. There were Snowshoes and Somalis, Tonkinese and Turkish, and many, many more. Brown and beige and orange and grey and black and white and silver cats, each with gleaming eyes of emerald, or sapphire, or amber. A rainbow of precious stones. ~ Brooke Burgess
Middle Grade quotes by Brooke Burgess
Belief is both a marvelous and a terrible thing. Belief makes things real. ~ H.J. Blenkinsop
Middle Grade quotes by H.J. Blenkinsop
It's nice of Mrs. Goe to think that marching against the juvenile juror law is going to keep kids safe. But the fact is, we're NOT safe. Nobody is. That's the whole point. There's no such thing as being safe
here or anywhere. People get hurt every day. Some people get killed by weirdos like Bob White and some people just get teased to death at the lunch table for drinking orange soda or eating a tuna fish sandwich. ~ Kate Klise
Middle Grade quotes by Kate Klise
Are you . . . lost?"
"Not really," she told him. "We just don't know where we're going. ~ Joel N. Ross
Middle Grade quotes by Joel N. Ross
Her mood was suddenly in free fall, a state she knew all too well. A heaviness inside. A hollow loneliness. A need to either quarrel or cry. A downward plunge that could only be escaped by huge loss of temper, howling for her mother, or what people like teachers called going too far.
Trouble on the way. ~ Hilary McKay
Middle Grade quotes by Hilary McKay
Winston and his sister walked for a time in silence, each in an invisible, vibrating pocket of excitement. ~ Eric Berlin
Middle Grade quotes by Eric Berlin
Wish me good luck, please," I whisper.
"On one condition," Philemone says. "Remember, what you call luck is the meeting of opportunity and flexibility."
I smile, weakly.
"Good luck," she says. "Now go. ~ Robyn Mundell
Middle Grade quotes by Robyn Mundell
They didn't speak again but sat in disbelief and wonder as the cookies, made with butter, sugar, flour, eggs, and a dollop of exasperation, slowly cooled on their tray. ~ Diane Zahler
Middle Grade quotes by Diane Zahler
Life outside is changing our world. We are losing our culture, loosing our roots. How can a living thing grow if its roots are cut? ~ Sherry Shahan
Middle Grade quotes by Sherry Shahan
Trolls have existed on this planet for as long as humans. This is what I was told and what I translated to Tub. The first mention of them in recorded history is from ninth-century Norway, when the nefarious creatures began showing up in song, verse, and bedtime stories to keep misbehaving children in line. According to Norse folklore, trolls are one of the Dark Beings, the purest embodiments of evil, and they scurried from between the toes of Ymir, the mythic six-headed Frost Giant whose murdered body became the universe in which we live; his bones became the mountains, his teeth boulders, and so forth. ~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
As chief, I will represent my people in many different ways and might never know which particular action is destined to matter more than another, thus, all my actions should be considered potentially important and worthy of my best effort. ~ Jennifer Frick-Ruppert
Middle Grade quotes by Jennifer Frick-Ruppert
...but freedom is scary. ~ Renata Suerth
Middle Grade quotes by Renata Suerth
Are you suggesting we eat cursed fruit? Vicious fruit? Attacking fruit? ~ Merrie Haskell
Middle Grade quotes by Merrie Haskell
The 2015 edition updates the 2013 edition with more than 40 pages of new content. ~ D.K. Segraves
Middle Grade quotes by D.K. Segraves
Is it ... can we ... is it safe?"
Tub checked the lot but he seemed unconcerned.
"Coach Lawrence nabbed him for practice. We live to fight another day, soldier."
"No ... I mean, the thing ... is it ... ?"
Tub frowned.
"The thing. Hmmm. Can you be more specific?
I clutched at the bumper and raised myself to unsteady feet. I patted the truck bed, taking solace in the cake of dust. It was real; I was not caught in a nightmare. I smeared the dust with my fingers and smelled it.
"If you lick that, we're no longer friends," Tub said. ~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
There are secret passages all around you if you know where to look for them. ~ Steven J. Carroll
Middle Grade quotes by Steven J. Carroll
Storytelling is the art of weaving ordinary words into extraordinary worlds. ~ Jack Dublin
Middle Grade quotes by Jack Dublin
It's true, I'm impressed with myself, almost daily. If I don't impress myself then how am I ever to feel accomplished?"
"Who cares if you impress others?"
"Indeed. Others' opinions hardly matter, but one's own sense of accomplishment is paramount, is it not? ~ Ridley Pearson
Middle Grade quotes by Ridley Pearson
In a moment of terrible heartbreak, he (The Sweep) had taught her to see wonder. ~ Jonathan Auxier
Middle Grade quotes by Jonathan Auxier
My face is like some sort of bashful chameleon, flashing red at any sign of social interaction. Stupid face. ~ Allyson Kennedy
Middle Grade quotes by Allyson Kennedy
I've seen middle grade books criticized by adult readers for leaving things for the reader to figure out, for not having perfect happily-ever-after endings. They get knocked for being too depressing, for using too many big words, for featuring parental characters who are too clueless. Girl protagonists are "too angry" or "too self-absorbed." The issues raised are "too heavy," the books "too earnest," "too quiet," "too hard," "too far-reaching," "too strange," and it is all too too much for the reader.

Except it's never the readers themselves saying these things.

Our critical discourse in middle grade is sometimes much more about what the reviewer believes children's books should be rather than about engaging with the book itself and the literature as a whole. When we say a book is "too sad," "too scary," "too complicated;" when we demand that endings are perfectly happy and all tied up; when we demand that the themes not be too weighty or the characters not face too much hardship; we are projecting our own biases onto the book, and using them to prescribe what books for this age range can or cannot do. This is nannying, not literary criticism - and it doesn't give kids much credit. ~ Anne Ursu
Middle Grade quotes by Anne Ursu
Blaise decided that the thing he would remember most about this London was the sour stink of it. The overripe foulness of the streets made him gag, and when a woman emptied a chamber pot from a top window, nearly catching him in its spray, he bent over and wretched, much to the Nightsneaks' amusement. ~ Teresa Flavin
Middle Grade quotes by Teresa Flavin
I intended only lilies. That was my intention: a bouquet of lilies. - The Magician ~ Kate DiCamillo
Middle Grade quotes by Kate DiCamillo

Middle Grade quotes by Sarah Weeks
He let go of the rope one hand at a time and latched onto Lisa's hands. Her fingernails dug into his wrists, but her grip was strong after a summer of lifting girls into the air. It was a tug of war battle between his friends and Shawn's ghost. The wind died down as Shawn gathered all of his energy to pull on Mike. Even though he was terrified of what was happening, Mike knew that Shawn wasn't trying to hurt him. After all these years, he was still trying to find a way out. Shawn wanted to go home too, and he saw the hope of being rescued falling away.
"Shawn! Please! Let me go!" Mike called over the dying wind, "I'll get you help! We'll get you out! Just please! Let me go!"

They were being poisoned. ~ M.L. LeGette
Middle Grade quotes by M.L. LeGette
How did you get into the castle, Alexandre, son of Gilles Smith?"
Sand shrugged. "A saint kidnapped me from his shrine and put me into a fireplace here. So I guess the answer is, a miracle of Saint Melor. Or so I think. He has not told me."
"If you are trying to antagonize him, you are doing a good job," Perrotte whispered.
Sand scuffed his shoe at her. "I'm just telling the truth!"
"You're very good at telling it in the most maddening way possible."
"Thank you? ~ Merrie Haskell
Middle Grade quotes by Merrie Haskell

Middle Grade quotes by Sarah Weeks
Via the power of the swamplands I cast a double-decker Gris-Gris on my pirogue, to give Ol' Alfonse a VERY, Very Nasty bellyache."
"Hey now Cricket," How-Ya-Do scolded, "you better watch-out playing around with them Voodoo spells."
"Says who," Cricket countered combatively.
"You know you ain't supposed to Conja no Gris-Gris. You be just "a little Cajun-girl," not a Voodoo Priestess, like Madame Teche" How-Ya-Do reminded her, "what are you gonna do if that Gris-Gris bounces off of a tree `n whammies somebody-else by mistake? ~ Darwun St. James

Middle Grade quotes by Katie Cook
It's a terrible thing, isn't it? To be dragged under? ~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
See, I know my life probably sounds glamorous and all, but trust me, it's not. Living with a bunch of do-gooders comes with some major drawbacks. At the top of the list is the fact that while superheroes are really great at the big things - like thwarting the forces of evil - they really stink at the little things. Like, for example, remembering their kid's birthday.
- Elliott Harkness, age 12 ~ R.L. Ullman
Middle Grade quotes by R.L. Ullman
A tomb is a vault, a vault is a home," Mr. Sadlot said casually sniffing the flower in his lapel. "That's where the deceased chose to reside and that is where he will be placed." Kekaju and the Hidden Swamp ~ Robert W. Sweeting
Middle Grade quotes by Robert W. Sweeting
The address given to me by Greta was written in such a way that the words looked like numbers, and the numbers looked like the aftermath of a startled octopus meeting a deep-sea diver in a corner café. It was the worst writing I had ever seen. ~ Shoeburn Ruffet
Middle Grade quotes by Shoeburn Ruffet
But there are people in this world you can trust. If you give us a chance, we will help you in any way we can. ~ Jaleigh Johnson
Middle Grade quotes by Jaleigh Johnson
He scanned the page looking for an entry that read, "Help! I'm Almost Thirteen Years Old and I Still Have the Muscles of a Third-Grader!" but apparently Robert's condition was so freakish and rare, the authors of the book didn't even bother to include it. ~ Charles Gilman
Middle Grade quotes by Charles Gilman
The magical force that had sundered everything in the castle had occasionally made some very odd choices in its destruction - Sand found a hammer that had been broken only at the wooden handle and not any of the metal parts, and another hammer whose handle was whole while the metal was broken. ~ Merrie Haskell
Middle Grade quotes by Merrie Haskell
I'm serious, Jim. You need to put this crap away. You walk into school on Monday talking to me, or anyone else, about the city's pesky troll problem, and you're not exactly going to get a lot of people saying, 'Gee, thanks for the warning.' It'll spread faster than mono. You think things are tough for us now? Jim, this will be the end. I'm sorry if you had a crazy nightmare. I really am. But I can't let you ruin our lives. ~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
Middle grade fiction shapes the lives of future adults. It is one of the most powerful forces in literature. Those who use their intellect to create works of fiction for the middle grade audience do so with an incredible privilege and responsibility as authors. For that reason, we are glad to post our reviews of their great efforts here on Goodreads. ~ Edward Gordon
Middle Grade quotes by Edward Gordon

Middle Grade quotes by Vivian French
Kiddo - here's a problem. We've got witches, we've got Evil, we've got an orphan, and we've got a kidnapping. What's the deal? ~ Vivian French
Middle Grade quotes by Vivian French
I had heard this dog barking over the music earlier, but this was the first time I had seen him. He was a giant, brown Great Dane who was either annoyed or excited by everything that was going on. He made a beeline for the girls who had just stepped back onto the sidewalk. Ruby was the first of them to spot him coming at them and began to scream and run backwards. The rest of the group froze in place. The dog was barking like crazy as it charged at them. He circled Ruby once and then pounced on her. Ruby screamed and swatted at the dog with her bucket and then took off down the sidewalk.
"Ruby!" I screamed, "Don't run!"

- The Stable House ~ Laura Smith
Middle Grade quotes by Laura Smith
A great deal of a child's life is being asked and being told things by adults and not knowing the answers or what to do. So, I didn't say anything. ~ Shoeburn Ruffet

Middle Grade quotes by Merrie Haskell
In a near-by clearing, Cricket and How-Ya-Do came upon a ridiculously comical sight.
It was an extra-large hyper-manic bird yelling at the funniest looking Crawfish that she had ever seen. The Crawfish stood over a foot tall, which just does not happen, and he was wearing a light-blue beanie and gold chains around his neck. ~ Darwun St. James
Middle Grade quotes by Darwun St. James

"I guess your prayer was answered," Perrotte said.
Sand strongly considered throwing something at her - but there was nothing to hand that wasn't sacred. ~ Merrie Haskell
Middle Grade quotes by Merrie Haskell
Something warned me that what I might see would haunt me forever. ~ Guillermo Del Toro
Middle Grade quotes by Guillermo Del Toro
Winston Breen was solving a puzzle, but then Winston Breen was always solving a puzzle. ~ Eric Berlin

Tugs was surprised to find that the cake was actually pretty dry and not as good as the cakes her own mother made. It was a revelation. Tugs had assumed that tastier food came out of fancier houses. ~ Anne Ylvisaker
Middle Grade quotes by Anne Ylvisaker
Toad must have been very accustomed to traveling this way, balanced on the back rails of a rushing buggy, but Melena was not. She gripped the sides and white-knuckled the rails with her knapsack sandwiched between her knees. Hazel was clamped onto the roof, grinning like an alligator in the sun.
And Toad lounged like a cat. ~ M.L. LeGette
