I've learned, from working with translators over the years, that the original novel is, in a way, a translation itself. It is not, of course, translated into another language but it is a translation from the images in the author's mind to that which he is able to put down on paper. Here's a secret. Many novelists, if they are pressed and if they are being honest, will admit that the finished book is a rather rough translation of the book they'd intended to write. It's one of the heartbreaks of writing fiction. You have, for months or years, been walking around with the idea of a novel in your mind, and in your mind it's transcendent, it's brilliantly comic and howlingly tragic, it contains everything you know, and everything you can imagine, about human life on the planet earth. It is vast and mysterious and awe-inspiring. It is a cathedral made of fire. But even if the book in question turns out fairly well, it's never the book that you'd hoped to write. It's smaller than the book you'd hoped to write. It is an object, a collection of sentences, and it does not remotely resemble a cathedral made of fire. It feels, in short, like a rather inept translation of a mythical great work. The translator, then, is simply moving the book another step along the translation continuum. The translator is translating a translation. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
She'd never imagined it like this-when she thought of someone (a woman like herself)losing her mind, she'd imagined shrieks and wails, hallucinations; but at that moment it had seemed clear that there was another way, far quieter; a way that was numb and hopeless, flat, so much so that an emotion as strong as sorrow would have been a relief. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Here, then, is the last moment of true perception, a man fishing in a red jacket and a cloudy sky reflected on opaque water. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
I was not beautiful, but I believed I had the possibility of beauty in me. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
NASA's Aqua satellite is showing that water vapor, the dominant greenhouse gas, works to offset the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2). This information, contrary to the assumption used in all the warming models, is ignored by global warming alarmists. ~ Walter Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Walter Cunningham
Lead generation excels when a campaign is looking to capture a piece of factual intelligence that could never be modelled or predicted through profiling and sophisticated propensity algorithms. ~ Chris Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Chris Cunningham
I think of dance as a constant transformation of life itself. ~ Merce Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Merce Cunningham
It's true that my mom loved it when I played Joanie Cunningham in the musical 'Happy Days,' but I think she finally realized I am never going to do 'Oklahoma!' ~ Christine Lakin
Micale Cunningham quotes by Christine Lakin
But you find - surprise - that you like this capitulation from her, this helpless acceding, from the most recent embodiment of all the girls over all the years who've given you nothing, not even a curious glance. Welcome to the darker side of love. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Her cake is a failure, but she is loved anyway. She is loved, she thinks, in more or less the way the gifts will be appreciated: because they have been given with good intentions , because they exist, because they are part of a world in which one wants what one gets. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
He believes that a real work of art can be owned but should not be subject to capture; that it should radiate such authority, such bizarre but confident beauty (or unbeauty) that it can't be undone by even the most ludicrous sofas or side tables. A real work of art should rule the room, and the clients should call up not to complain about the art but to say that the art has helped them understand how the room is all a horrible mistake, can Peter suggest a designer to help them start over again. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
In countries around the world, waistlines are expanding so rapidly that health experts recently coined a term for the epidemic: globesity. ~ Laurie Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Laurie Cunningham
There is something exciting about this. Peter still doesn't want to have sex with Mizzy, but there is something thrilling about downing a shot of vodka with another man who happens to be naked. There's the covert brotherliness of it, a locker-room aspect, the low, masculine, eroticized love-hum that's not so much about the flesh as it is about the commonality. You, Peter, as devoted as you are to your wife, as completely as you understand her very real worries on Mizzy's behalf, also understand Mizzy's desire to make his own way, to avoid that maelstrom of womanly ardor, that distinctly feminine sense that you will be healed, whether you want to be or not.
Men are united in their commonness, maybe it's as simple as that. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Shipping first time code is like going into debt. A little debt speeds development so long as it is paid back promptly with a rewrite. The danger occurs when the debt is not repaid. Every minute spent on not-quite-right code counts as interest on that debt. Entire engineering organizations can be brought to a standstill under the debt load of an unconsolidated implementation, object-oriented or otherwise. ~ Ward Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Ward Cunningham
He makes her think sometimes of a mouse singing amorous ballads under the window of a giantess. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
The writer asks himself, 'Can I think of a plot that will parallel this? Can I take this work of literature as an example of something I might produce?' Let us, then, consider literature as a productive science. ~ J.V. Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by J.V. Cunningham
Visions are answers. Answers imply questions. It ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Peter is still amazed at the degree to which a certain widening gyre of accolades can change an artist's work, literally change it, not just the new stuff but the old as well, the pieces that have been around for a while, that have seemed "interesting" or "promising" but minor, until (not often, just once in a while) an artist is by some obscure consensus declared to have been neglected, misrepresented, ahead of his time. What's astonishing to Peter is the way the work itself seems to change, more or less in the way of a reasonably pretty girl who is suddenly treated as a beauty. Peculiar, clever Victoria Hwang is going to be in Artforum next month, and probably in the collections of the Whitney and the Guggenheim; Renee Zellweger - moonfaced, squinty-eyed, a character actress if ever there was one - was just on the cover of Vogue, looking ravishing in a silver gown. It is, of course, a trick of perception - the understanding that that funny little artist or that quirky-looking girl must be taken with new seriousness - but Peter suspects there's a deeper change at work. Being the focus of that much attention (and, yes, of that much money) seems to differently excite the molecules of the art or the actress or the politician. It's not just a phenomenon of altered expectations, it's a genuine transubstantiation, brought about by altered expectations. Renée Zellweger becomes a beauty, and would look like a beauty to someone who had never heard of her. Victoria Hwang's videos and ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
A writer should always feel like he's in over his head ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Zoe loved Trancas's mother. She respected her exhausted and ironic hope for rebirth. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
You have failed in the most base and human of ways
you have not imagined the lives of others. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
She will never mention to Leonard that she'd planned on fleeing, even for a few hours. As if he were the one in need of care and comfort
as if he were the one in danger. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
She is not a writer at all, really; she is merely a gifted eccentric. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
The power is that which generated and maintains the universe ... the life-force, the stuff of creation. It is the very substance of existence itself. ~ Scott Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Scott Cunningham
I find the growing intervention by the football authorities in strictly footballing matters a rather worrying trend. ~ Kenny Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Kenny Cunningham
I never felt I would get to the stage where I would to have to actively think about retiring from international football as I always thought it would pass me by. ~ Kenny Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Kenny Cunningham
Please, God, send me something to adore. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
No one wakes up in the morning and says, 'I want to gain 150 pounds and I will start right now! ~ Tricia Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Tricia Cunningham
Disagreements don't cause disunity, a lack of forgiveness does. ~ Loren Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Loren Cunningham
Who has more power than a child? She can be as cruel as she wants to be. He can't. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
There is a beauty in the world, though it's harsher than we expect it to be. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Thinking and saying you are handicapable instead of handicapped will not change anything about your disease or illness. It will help you think more positively about it though. ~ Tom Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Tom Cunningham
I was poor. When you're poor you work, and when you're rich you expect somebody to hand it to you. So I think being reasonably poor is very good for people. ~ Imogen Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Imogen Cunningham
Gregg Cunningham once said, "There are more people working full-time to kill babies than there are working full-time to save them. That's because killing babies is very profitable while saving them is very costly. So costly, that large numbers of Americans who say they oppose abortion are not lifting a finger to stop it. And those that do lift a finger to stop it do just enough to salve the conscience but not enough to stop the killing."8 ~ Scott Klusendorf
Micale Cunningham quotes by Scott Klusendorf
She has failed. She wishes she didn't mind. Something, she thinks, is wrong with her. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Barret thinks- he thinks, briefly- of turning around and leaving the park; of being, this time, the vanisher, the man who leaves you wondering, who offers no explanation, not even the sour satisfaction of a real fight; who simply drifts away, because (it seems) there's affection and there's sex but there's no urgency, no little hooks clasping little eyes; no binding, no dogged devotions, no prayers for mercy, not when mercy can be so easily self-administered. What would it be like, Barrett wonders, to be the other, the man who's had the modest portion he thinks of as enough, who slips away before the mess sets in, before he's available to accusation and recrimination, before the authorities start demanding of him When, and Why, and With Whom ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
It is a perverse tradition we honor. Kings adorn their halls with images of battles they won, the people they've conquered." He paced as he vented, a lifetime frustration pent up in that twisted truth. "I have brought kingdoms on the brink of war to peace, and my deeds will never be deemed as heroic as those who kill." - Paris of Troy. ~ Aria Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Aria Cunningham
The magic begins in you. Feel your own energy, and realize similar energy exists within the Earth, stones, plants, water, wind, fire, colores, and animals. ~ Scott Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Scott Cunningham
It is only after knowing him for some time that you begin to realize you are, to him, an essentially fictional character, one he has invested with nearly limitless capacities for tragedy and comedy not because that is your true nature but because he, Richard, needs to live in a world peopled by extreme and commanding figures. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Hing hang hung! the words rang faintly through his daydream like echoes of Miz Cunningham's tart little doorbell. Then he looked again at the old woman herself. Why, she was really quite wonderful - this old fat woman! In the end, she got her hands on nearly everything in the world! Just look at her window! There by the pair of old overshoes were Jamey Hankins' ice skates. There was old Walt Spoon's elk's tooth. There - his mother's own wedding ring! There was a world in the window of this remarkable old woman. And it was probable that when Miz Cunningham like an ancient barn owl fluttered and flapped to earth at last, they would take her away and pluck her open and find her belly lined with fur and feathers and the tiny mice skulls of myriad dreams. ~ Davis Grubb
Micale Cunningham quotes by Davis Grubb
I changed my mind because of a scene between Howard Cunningham and Richie. The father-son situation was written so movingly, I fell in love with the project. ~ Tom Bosley
Micale Cunningham quotes by Tom Bosley
In heaven, Lucas would be beautiful. He'd speak a language everyone understood. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
You cannot find peace by avoiding life, Leonard. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
I'm just a child who's learned to impersonate an adult. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
Look at the sky. Does its sapphire hue dim when you take a single breath? Are the stars drawn closer when you weep? The sky cannot be diminished so. Thus it is with the spirit: it is a thing without beginning or end. ~ Elaine Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Elaine Cunningham
Beauty is a whore, I like money better. ~ Michael Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Michael Cunningham
And then there are difficulties. Computers are famous for difficulties. A difficulty is just a blockage from progress. You have to try a lot of things. When you finally find what works, it doesn't tell you a thing. It won't be the same tomorrow. Getting the computer to work is so often dealing with difficulties. ~ Ward Cunningham
Micale Cunningham quotes by Ward Cunningham
It is the Morocco of America, the New Orleans of the north. ~ Michael Cunningham
