Sufism is the reconciliation of all opposites: the outer and the inner, the material and the spiritual, the finite and the infinite, the here and the hereafter, freedom and servanthood, the human and the divine. Enlightenment in this tradition does not prevent us from functioning in a practical and humble way in life, does not entitle us to special treatment, does not exclude us from the inevitable joys and griefs of life. The Sufi's union with God does not cancel servanthood. What I found through Sufism far exceeded my hopes. As an example, one poet said to me: "All of my reading, study, and creative writing could not have prepared me for the poetry of Rumi." And yet all Rumi's poetry is just the wave on the surface of the ocean of Sufi spirituality. Perhaps it is consistent with the idea of Divine generosity that it should exceed in actuality the gift we had foreseen in our imagination. The Source is not only infinitely generous, it is infinitely creative, and its gifts surpass human imagination. ~ Kabir Edmund Helminski

You are a manuscript oƒ a divine letter.
You are a mirror reflecting a noble face.

you are already that. ~ Rumi

I manage fine with no others around;
I cannot manage without you.

it won't wander away from you.
Reason's eye blurs with your wine
heaven's wheel spins under your thumb Pleasure's nose follows your lead,
I cannot manage without you. ~ Jalaluddin Rumi

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
Run from what's comfortable. Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious. I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now on I'll be mad. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
THE DEATH OF SALADIN
You left ground and sky weeping, mind
and soul full of grief. No one can
take your place in existence or in
absence. Both mourn, the angels, the
prophets, and this sadness I feel has
taken from me the taste of language,
so that I can't say the flavor of my
being apart. The roof of the kingdom
within has collapsed! When I say the
word YOU, I mean a hundred universes.
Pouring grief water, or secret dripping in the heart, eyes in the head or eyes
of the soul, I saw yesterday that all these flow out to find you when you're
not here. That bright fire bird Saladin
went like an arrow, and now the bow
trembles and sobs. If you know how to
weep for human beings, weep for Saladin. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
We owe thankfulness to God, not sour faces. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
If God should smile at someone once ..he then

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
A lover asked his beloved,
Do you love yourself more than you love me?
Beloved replied, I have died to myself and I live for you.
I've disappeared from myself and my attributes,
I am present only for you.
I've forgotten all my learnings,
but from knowing you I've become a scholar.
I've lost all my strength, but from your power I am able.
I love myself ... I love you.
I love you ... I love myself. ~ Rumi

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
There's no one with intelligence in this town except that man over there playing with the children, the one riding the stick horse. He has keen, fiery insight and vast dignity like the night sky, but he conceals it in the madness of child's play. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
For beloved cross every pass
Worldly affairs slow their pace

Flowing tears his face shall trace
His ego is shattered glass Self-estranged, himself deface
Sense the Divine in spirit and mass
If he is truly seeking grace ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
So Recklessly Exposed

December and January, gone.
Tulips coming up. It's time to watch
how trees stagger in the wind
and roses never rest.

Wisteria and Jasmine twist on themselves.
Violet kneels to Hyacinth, who bows.

Narcissus winks, wondering what will
the lightheaded Willow say
of such slow dancing by Cypress.

Painters come outdoors with brushes.
I love their hands.

The birds sing suddenly and all at once.
The soul says Ya Hu, quietly.

A dove calls, Where, ku?
Soul, you will find it.

Now the roses show their breasts.
No one hides when the Friend arrives.

The Rose speaks openly to the Nightingale.
Notice how the Green Lily has several tongues
but still keeps her secret.

Now the Nightingale sings this love
that is so recklessly exposed, like you. ~ Jalaluddin Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Jalaluddin Rumi
Open the window of your heart and let the Spirit speak ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
Life is a balance between holding on and letting go. ~ Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
A Mystic And A Drunk

The Universe turns on an axis.
Let my soul circle around a table
like a beggar, like a planet
rolling in the vast, totally helpless and free.

The knight and the castle move jaggedly
about the chessboard, but they're actually
centered on the king. They circle.

If love is your center, a ring
gets put on your finger.

Something inside the moth
is made of fire.

A mystic touches the annihilating tip
of pure nothing.

A drunkard thinks peeing is absolution.
Lord, take these impurities from me.

The lord replies, First, understand
the nature of impurity. If your key is bent,
the lock will not open.

I fall silent.
King Shams has come.
Always when I close, he opens. ~ Jalaluddin Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Jalaluddin Rumi
There goes a river dragging an ocean behind it. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
No one becomes a scholar by virtue of robe and turban. Scholarship is a virtue in its very essence, and whether that virtue is clothed in tunic or overcoat, it makes no difference. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
Love is an open secret, the most obvious thing in the world and the most hidden, with no why to how it keeps its mystery. ~ Rumi
Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi quotes by Rumi
From the urgent way lovers want each other to the seeker's search for truth, all moving is from the mover. Every Pull Draws Us To The Ocean. ~ Rumi
