People may be constrained in two basic ways: physically, by confining them in jails, mental hospitals, and so forth; and symbolically, by confining them in occupations, social roles, and so forth. Actually, confinement of the second type is more common and pervasive in the day-to-day conduct of society's business; as a rule, only when the symbolic, or socially informal, confinement of conduct fails or proves inadequate, is recourse taken to physical, or socially formal, confinement…. When people perform their social roles properly – in other words, when social expectations are adequately met – their behavior is considered normal. Though obvious, this deserves emphasis: a waiter must wait on tables; a secretary must type; a father must earn a living; a mother must cook and sew and take care of her children. Classic systems of psychiatric nosology had nothing to say about these people, so long as they remained neatly imprisoned in their respective social cells; or, as we say about the Negroes, so long as they "knew their place." But when such persons broke out of "jail" and asserted their liberty, they became of interest to the psychiatrist. ~ Thomas Szasz
Mental Hospitals quotes by Thomas Szasz
She needed a break." "A break? She needed a break? What does that mean?" "You know what that means, Charlie." "I do?" Charlie thought a moment, then rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on! Again?""You know how she is. But hey! At least she's still in Switzerland. We'll get there in no time." "But it's a mental hospital! Not a resort!""To her, all mental hospitals are resorts. Besides, it could be worse," Max said happily. "This could all be so much worse!" Charlie shook her head . "Dude, I seriously don't know how. ~ Shelly Laurenston
Mental Hospitals quotes by Shelly Laurenston
If we do not pay for children in good schools, then we are going to pay for them in prisons and mental hospitals. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Mental Hospitals quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt
Mystics are all a bit funny in the head anyway," the priest added cynically, "which is why the church locks them all up in mental hospitals and euphemistically calls these institutions monasteries. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Mental Hospitals quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
People say mental hospitals are for the patients, in fact they are to protect society from them. They are justified in doing that. Society has to do what is best for itself. ~ Robert M. Pirsig
Mental Hospitals quotes by Robert M. Pirsig
I finally saw the whole conspiracy standing as plain as an elephant in the street; also the conspiracy was admitted to me in great detail by one of the princes of the conspiracy."
"Bad, Smith, very bad."
"If one of the inmates should come to you right now, Doctor, and tell you it was raining outside, you'd say 'Bad, very bad', and make damning marks on his record."
" That's probably true. It's an automatic response with me. ~ R.A. Lafferty
Mental Hospitals quotes by R.A. Lafferty
In the same decades that saw the rise of mass incarceration, the number of beds available in state mental hospitals across the country dropped from 339 beds per 100,000 people in 1955 to under 20 beds per 100,000 people by 2015. There are now ten times as many mentally ill people in our prisons and jails as there are in state mental institutions. ~ Peter Edelman
Mental Hospitals quotes by Peter Edelman
Mental hospitals are great for horror movies because they're already scary even without the horror or supernatural elements. This is a place where you can play with the ideas of one's sanity, what's real and what's not. ~ Michael Rasmussen
Mental Hospitals quotes by Michael Rasmussen
The term 'deinstitutionalization' conceals some simple truths, namely, that old, unwanted persons, formerly housed in state hospitals, are now housed in nursing homes; that young, unwanted persons, formerly also housed in state hospitals, are now housed in prisons or parapsychiatric facilities; and that both groups of inmates are systematically drugged with psychiatric medications. ~ Thomas Szasz
Mental Hospitals quotes by Thomas Szasz
The breakdown of the neighborhoods also meant the end of what was essentially an extended family....With the breakdown of the extended family, too much pressure was put on the single family. Mom had no one to stay with Granny, who couldn't be depended on to set the house on fire while Mom was off grocery shopping. The people in the neighborhood weren't there to keep an idle eye out for the fourteen-year-old kid who was the local idiot, and treated with affection as well as tormented....So we came up with the idea of putting everybody in separate places. We lock them up in prisons, mental hospitals, geriatric housing projects, old-age homes, nursery schools, cheap suburbs that keep women and the kids of f the streets, expensive suburbs where everybody has their own yard and a front lawn that is tended by a gardener so all the front lawns look alike and nobody uses them anyway....the faster we lock them up, the higher up goes the crime rate, the suicide rate, the rate of mental breakdown. The way it's going, there'll be more of them than us pretty soon. Then you'll have to start asking questions about the percentage of the population that's not locked up, those that claim that the other fifty-five per cent is crazy, criminal, or senile.
WE have to find some other way....So I started imagining....Suppose we built houses in a circle, or a square, or whatever, connected houses of varying sizes, but beautiful, simple. And outside, behind the houses, all the space usually given ~ Marilyn French
Mental Hospitals quotes by Marilyn French
Either way, Grayson found it ironic how such dissimilar circumstances, colleges, and mental hospitals, had led to the same awful apartment. ~ Dorothy McFalls
Mental Hospitals quotes by Dorothy McFalls
The idea that all the people locked up in mental hospitals are sane while all the people walking about are mad is merely a literary cliche, put about by people who should be locked up. I assure you there is not much in it. Taken as a whole, the sane are out there the sick are in here. For example you are in here because you have delusions that sane people are put in mental hospitals. ~ Tom Stoppard
Mental Hospitals quotes by Tom Stoppard
In the absence of any therapy, the mentally ill of the 20th century were chained, shackled, straitjacketed, kept nude, electrocuted, half-frozen, parboiled, violently hosed, wrapped in wet canvas, confined to "mummy bags", subjected to insulin-induced hypoglycemic comas, forced into seizures with massive doses of the stimulant Metrazol, injected with camphor, drugged into three-week comas with barbiturates and tranquilizers, involuntarily sterilized, and surgically mutilated. Rape by hospital staff was common, as was humiliation and verbal abuse. One reporter noted that a state hospital patient had been restrained for so long that his skin was beginning to grow around the leather straps. ~ Antonella Gambotto-Burke
Mental Hospitals quotes by Antonella Gambotto-Burke
My sense of urgency is very simple,' said the professor, 'I've remembered that much. It's because what I have to remember has to do with time running out. And that's what anxiety is, in a lot of people. They know they have to do something, they should be doing something else, not just living hand-to-mouth, putting paint on their faces and decorating their caves and playing nasty tricks on their rivals. No. They have to do something else before they die - and so the mental hospitals are full and the chemists flourishing. ~ Doris Lessing
Mental Hospitals quotes by Doris Lessing
Churches were never meant to be mental hospitals. They were supposed to be military outposts under orders to storm the gates of hell. Every believer is on active duty and called to serve a higher purpose with the rank of their blessings and talents. ~ Shannon L. Alder
Mental Hospitals quotes by Shannon L. Alder
But what happens if such a patient, say myself, for instance, has rarely if ever experienced a normal state of functioning? What happens if such a patient has spent much of her life in mental hospitals, both pursuing and being pursued by one's illness after another? What happens if "regular life" to such a person has always meant cutting one's arms, or gagging? ~ Lauren Slater
Mental Hospitals quotes by Lauren Slater
The article said that Kevin Keegan was an extrovert while Kenny Dalglish was an introvert.
Just seeing the word introvert threw me into despair.
Was I an introvert?
Wasn't I?
Didn't I cry more than I laughed? Didn't I spend all my time reading in my room?
That was introverted behavior, wasn't it?
Introvert, introvert, I didn't want to be an introvert.
That was the last thing I wanted to be, there could be nothing worse.
But I was an introvert, and the insight grew like a kind of mental cancer within me.
Kenny Dalglish kept himself to himself.
Oh, so did I! But I didn't want that. I wanted to be an extrovert! An extrovert! ~ Karl Ove Knausgaard
Mental Hospitals quotes by Karl Ove Knausgaard
As massive numbers of homeless, hungry, unemployed, drug-addicted, illiterate, and mentally ill people vanish behind its walls, the social problems of extreme poverty, homelessness, hunger, unemployment, drug addiction, illiteracy, and mental illness become more ignorable, too. ~ Maya Schenwar
Mental Hospitals quotes by Maya Schenwar
Because there is no way to know the gender of an intersex baby, experts recommend that intersex children be allowed to manifest their natural, innate gender, which may be witnessed as early as two years of age, usually by age three, and almost universally by age six. Not identifying a gender in an intersex baby may be socially difficult for parents, causing them uneasiness or even hostility on the part of others, but it can save the intersex person from a life of frustration, and mental and emotional anguish. ~ Kathy Baldock
Mental Hospitals quotes by Kathy Baldock
You stole my soul. You robbed me of my happiness. You tore down my self-esteem. I am here because of you! Not anymore! ~ Charlena E. Jackson
Mental Hospitals quotes by Charlena E. Jackson
The problems that we have in Jamaica are not fundamentally economical but mental, if we changed the way we saw the world then many of us would be better off. Our failures and pitfalls are not because of what others did not do for us but stems from what we are culturally as a people unwilling to do for ourselves. We are a people shackled by our own perceptions.
We are much too given to pessimism, believing that the obeah man oil can kill you too earnestly than how we embrace the anointment of the Pastor's Olive Oil. I guess evil to us is such a strong, pervasive muse. ~ Crystal Evans
Mental Hospitals quotes by Crystal Evans
Beware the inveterate punster, Doyle, it's a sure sign of brewing mental disturbance. ~ Mark Frost
Mental Hospitals quotes by Mark Frost
I discovered another analogy in the legacy of Prophet Muhammad that immediately clicked with me: that the angels put down their wings in humility for a person who seeks knowledge, and that all living things, even the ants in their anthill and the fish in the sea, pray for a person who teaches people good things.
When I read this, I literally felt the goodness flow out of my heart for all creatures. The beautiful mental image it evoked resonated with my concept of the universe as one unit, and of all living things seeking to live together in peace and harmony, and being grateful when humans tried to fit into the circle of life, instead of working so hard to disrupt its equilibrium ~ Sahar El-Nadi
Mental Hospitals quotes by Sahar El-Nadi
Seek not the favor of the multitude; it is seldom got by honest and lawful means. But seek the testimony of few; and number not voices, but weigh them. ~ Immanuel Kant
Mental Hospitals quotes by Immanuel Kant
....the line of ill-intentional Egyptologist, equipped with a ferocious erudition , have commited their well known crime against science, by becoming guilty of a deliberate falsification of the history of humanity.
Supported by the governing powers of all the Western countries , this ideology, based on a moral and intellectual swindle, easily won out over the true scientific current developed by a parallel group of Egyptologist of good will, whose intellectual uprightness and even courage cannot be stressed stronly enough.
The new Egyptological ideology , born at the opportune monment, reinforced the theorectical bases of imperialist ideology. That is why it easily drowned out the voice of science, by throwing the veil of fasificacation over historical truth. This ideology was spread with the help of considerable publicity and taught the world over, because it alone had the material and financial means for its own propagation.
Thus imperialism, like the prehistoric hunter, first killed the being spiritually and culturally, before trying to eliminate it physically. The negation of the history and intellectual accomplishments of Black Africans was cultural, mental murder, which preceded and paved the way for their genocide here and there in the world. ~ Cheikh Anta Diop
Mental Hospitals quotes by Cheikh Anta Diop
The only thing that will make us remain glued to being the victim is our failure to handle the emotions that we go through and the pain that overcomes us. ~ Stephen Richards
Mental Hospitals quotes by Stephen Richards
Each person entering our world brings either a contribution or destruction. Trying to be "always nice" is to invite certain disaster. Those with poisonous attitudes, strange opinions, and caustic conversations love to look for someone nice who will listen to them. They love to dump their verbal garbage into the mental factory of anyone willing to listen. A major challenge in life is for each person to learn the art of standing guard at the doorway of their mind. Carefully examine the credentials and authority of those seeking to enter within that place where your attitudes are formed. ~ Jim Rohn
Mental Hospitals quotes by Jim Rohn
As a young man, he was already rather pompous and full of himself, concerned with what he would write and with his early (and, later, perennial) hatred of Ireland and the Irish. When he had still written only a few poems, he asked his brother Stanislaus: "Don't you think there is a certain resemblance between the mystery of the Mass and what I am trying to do? I mean that I am trying in my poems to give people some kind of intellectual pleasure or spiritual enjoyment by converting the bread of daily life into something that has a permanent artistic life of its own ... for their mental, moral, and spiritual uplift." When he was older his comparisons may have been less eucharistic and more modest, but he was always convinced of the extreme importance of his work, even before it existed. ~ Javier Marias
Mental Hospitals quotes by Javier Marias
The lesbian is a mental energy which gives breath and meaning to the most positive of images a woman can have of herself. ~ Nicole Brossard
Mental Hospitals quotes by Nicole Brossard
Citizens must pressure the American Hospital Association, the American Public Health Association, the Centers for Disease Control and other relevant governmental agencies to make greening our hospitals and medical centers a top priority so that they themselves don't create even more illness. ~ Andrew Weil
Mental Hospitals quotes by Andrew Weil
People need things like that to go on living - mental landscapes that have meaning for them, even if they can't explain them in words. Part of why we live is to come up with explanations with these things. That's what I think. ~ Haruki Murakami
Mental Hospitals quotes by Haruki Murakami
After my first few tastes I was pretty much hooked. I'd have dry spells, months without any or only piddling amounts of grace, but I never forgot about it or stopped wanting it. ~ Mark Vonnegut
Mental Hospitals quotes by Mark Vonnegut
Why? As much fun as a hospital sounds, I'd rather spend the evening dancing with an amazing, smart, funny, interesting, beautiful girl who has the most incredible green eyes I've ever seen. Sophie, will you go to the dance with me? ~ Leslea Wahl
Mental Hospitals quotes by Leslea Wahl
Fighting is very physical and extreme and you're very vulnerable. It's a very mental type of thing. ~ Gina Carano
Mental Hospitals quotes by Gina Carano
I don't suffer from a mental illness, I live with it. ~ David Feherty
Mental Hospitals quotes by David Feherty
Plato said that we are trapped inside a cave and know the world only through the shadows it casts on the wall. The skull is our cave, and mental representations are the shadows. ~ Steven Pinker
Mental Hospitals quotes by Steven Pinker
He'll be so happy. He'll be mental with joy when I tell him. The thought that she might not be his won't even cross his mind. Telling him would be cruel, it would break his heart, and I don't want to hurt him. I've never wanted to hurt him. I can't help the way I am. ~ Paula Hawkins
Mental Hospitals quotes by Paula Hawkins
I started crying because this would all disappear including me and no one seemed to realise it. Did no one feel what I was feeling. ~ Stefanie Sybens
Mental Hospitals quotes by Stefanie Sybens
Many people infected with C. diff are sick with diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and weight loss. Others are "carriers" of C. diff with no signs or symptoms of disease. Some of these carriers have been recently infected with C. diff but have recovered and now feel well. But carriers still have the C. diff organism in their stools and can serve as a silent reservoir of infection in hospitals and nursing homes. ~ J. Thomas LaMont
Mental Hospitals quotes by J. Thomas LaMont
When you become bipolar you break things that you can't later fix. ~ Bradley Good
Mental Hospitals quotes by Bradley Good
If I am anorexic, I'd be in the hospital! I am tall. I am 5 foot 9 inches, 175 cms tall. I am lean, I am active and athletic. There are so many women who are naturally lean, and so am I. I have been like this for the longest time. ~ Anushka Sharma
Mental Hospitals quotes by Anushka Sharma
Sometimes the world is so much sicker than the inmates of its institutions. ~ Joanne Greenberg
Mental Hospitals quotes by Joanne Greenberg
We speak about losing our minds as if it is a bad thing. I say, lose your mind. Do it purposefully. Find out who you really are beyond your thoughts and beliefs. Lose your mind, find your soul. ~ Vironika Tugaleva
Mental Hospitals quotes by Vironika Tugaleva
Pride is a mental factor causing us to feel higher or superior to others. Even our study of dharma can be the occasion for the delusion of pride to arise if we think our understanding is superior to that of everyone else. Pride is harmful because it prevents us from accepting fresh knowledge from a qualified teacher. Just as a pool of water cannot collect on the tip of a mountain, so too a reservoir of understanding cannot be established in a mind falsely elevated by pride. ~ Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
Mental Hospitals quotes by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
But the brilliant were subject to mental aberrations, were they not? ~ Neil Gaiman
Mental Hospitals quotes by Neil Gaiman
But I've learned that intelligence alone doesn't mean a damned thing. Here in your university, intelligence, education, knowledge, have all become great idols. But I know now there's one thing you've all overlooked: intelligent and education that hasn't been tempered by human affection isn't worth a damn ... Intelligence is one of the greatest human gifts. But all too often a search for knowledge drives out the search for love ... Intelligence without the ability to give and receive affection leads to mental and moral breakdown, to neurosis, and possibly even psychosis. ~ Daniel Keyes
Mental Hospitals quotes by Daniel Keyes
We are adults undertaking a team-building activity in a professional capacity, so naturally we spend several minutes horsing around, striking poses with our paintball guns and making sound effects. Joshua and Sergeant Paintball watch us like orderlies at a mental facility. ~ Sally Thorne
Mental Hospitals quotes by Sally Thorne
Success is a combination of effort, talent and hard work. There's got to be hard work and mental toughness. It's not just one thing that gets you there it's an accumulation of things ~ Brock Lesnar
Mental Hospitals quotes by Brock Lesnar
COVID-19 makes me glad that I no longer work in hospitals. ~ Steven Magee
Mental Hospitals quotes by Steven Magee
Men have such a good opinion of themselves, of their mental superiority and intellectual depth; they believe themselves so skilled in discerning the true from the false, the path of safety from those of error, that they should be forbidden as much as possible the perusal of philosophic writings. ~ Al-Ghazali
Mental Hospitals quotes by Al-Ghazali
Contrary to common sense there is no unique "real world" that pre-exists and is independent of human mental activity and human symbolic language; that which we call the world is a product of some mind whose symbolic procedures construct the world. ~ Jerome Bruner
Mental Hospitals quotes by Jerome Bruner
Our starting-point must be the fact that God cannot be named ... no mind has yet contained or language embraced God's substance in its fullness. No, we use facts connected with Him to outline qualities that correspond with Him, collecting a faint and feeble mental image from various quarters. Our noblest theologian is not one who has discovered the whole - our earthly shackles do not permit us the whole - but one whose mental image is by comparison fuller, who has gathered in his mind a richer picture, outline, or whatever we call it, of the truth. ~ Gregory Of Nazianzus
Mental Hospitals quotes by Gregory Of Nazianzus
Mental happiness is more important than physical comfort. Physical comfort comes from the material. But material facilities cannot provide you with peace of mind. ~ Dalai Lama
Mental Hospitals quotes by Dalai Lama
Old men tend to forget what thought was like in their youth; they forget the quickness of the mental jump, the daring of the youthful intuition, the agility of the fresh insight. They become accustomed to the more plodding varieties of reason, and because this is more than made up by the accumulation of experience, old men think themselves wiser than the young. ~ Isaac Asimov
Mental Hospitals quotes by Isaac Asimov
If we allow everything access to our mind, we are simply asking to be kept in a state of mental turmoil or bondage. For nothing enters the mind without having an effect for good or evil. ~ Dallas Willard
Mental Hospitals quotes by Dallas Willard
There is nothing in the world like a persuasive speech to fuddle the mental apparatus and upset the convictions and debauch the emotions of an audience not practiced in the tricks and delusions of oratory. ~ Mark Twain
Mental Hospitals quotes by Mark Twain
Don't believe everything you tell yourself. ~ Lidia Longorio
Mental Hospitals quotes by Lidia Longorio
Had I known you were going to pull a pretty ribbon out of your sleeve like some two-bit magician, tie me up with it, and indulge your mental torture fetish in your basement, I would've shot you. Many times."
"Two-bit magician?"
"Men like you enjoy being flattered. ~ Ilona Andrews
Mental Hospitals quotes by Ilona Andrews
In training everyone focuses on 90% physical and 10% mental, but in the races its 90% mental because there's very little that separates us physically at the elite level ~ Elka Graham
Mental Hospitals quotes by Elka Graham
You know what scares me? When you have to be nice to some paranoid schizophrenic, just because she lives in your head. ~ Steven Wright
Mental Hospitals quotes by Steven Wright
We're told that men are strong & brave, but I think women know how to endure, accept defeat & bear physical & mental agony much better than men. ~ Lisa See
Mental Hospitals quotes by Lisa See
Picture the Bay of Bengal as an expanse of tropical water: still and blue in the calm of the January winter, or raging and turbid with silt at the peak of the summer rains. Picture it in two dimensions on a map, overlaid with a web of shipping channels and telegraph cables and inscribed with lines of distance. Now imagine the sea as a mental map: as a family tree of cousins, uncles, sisters, sons, connected by letters and journeys and stories. Think of it as a sea of debt, bound by advances and loans and obligations. Picture the Bay of Bengal even where it is absent - deep in the Malaysian jungle, where Hindu shrines sprout from the landscape as if washed up by the sea, left behind. ~ Sunil S. Amrith
Mental Hospitals quotes by Sunil S. Amrith
Sorrow is not sickness-unless it becomes a permanent state of mental ill-health. The point is there are indeed stages of grief, as all the therapists tell us, but they do not obey some great unseen timetable. ~ Bel Mooney
Mental Hospitals quotes by Bel Mooney
This is an absolute law: You've got to be rich inside to become and remain rich outside. Become rich inside and your mental equivalent will manifest in your experience. ~ Mark Victor Hansen
Mental Hospitals quotes by Mark Victor Hansen
Mental illnesses grab you by the leg, screaming, and chow you down whole. They make you selfish. They make you irrational. They make you irrational. They make you self-absorbed. They make you needy. They make you cancel plans last minute. They make you not very fun to spend time with. They make you exhausting to be near. ~ Holly Bourne
