Anesthesia was discovered. Do you know what it means to relieve man of his pain and suffering? Anesthesia is the most humane of all of man's accomplishments, and what a merciful accomplishment it was. For this great discovery we are indebted to Dr. W. T. G. Morton.

Do you know that the religionists opposed the use of anesthesia on the ground that God sent pain as a punishment for sin, and it was considered the greatest of sacrileges to use it - just think of it, a sin to relieve man of his misery! What a monstrous perversion! This one instance alone should convince you of the difference in believing in God or not.

No believer in God would have spent his energies to discover anesthesia. He would have been in mortal fear of the wrath of his God for interfering with his 'divine plan,' of making man suffer for having eaten of the fruit of the 'Tree of Knowledge.'

The very crux of the matter is in this one instance. Man seeks to relieve his fellow man from the suffering of disease and the pangs of mental agony. The believers in God are content that man's suffering is ordained, and therefore he accepts life and its trials and tribulations as a penance for living.

The fear of the wrath of God has been a stumbling block to progress. ~ Joseph Lewis
Mental Agony quotes by Joseph Lewis
It is not the physical pain which hurts the most (and this applies to adults as much as to punished children); it is the mental agony caused by the injustice, the unreasonableness of it all. Strangely ~ Viktor E. Frankl
Mental Agony quotes by Viktor E. Frankl
The mental agony I have suffered, during the last two days, wrings from me the avowal to you of a passion which, as you well know, is not one of yesterday, nor one I have lightly formed. On Rose, sweet, gentle girl! my heart is set, as firmly as ever heart of man was set on woman. I have no thought, no view, no hope in life, beyond her; and if you oppose me in this great stake, you take my peace and happiness in your hands, and cast them to the wind. Mother, think better of this, and of me, and do not disregard the happiness of which you seem to think so little. ~ Charles Dickens
Mental Agony quotes by Charles Dickens
One whose spirit and mental strength have been strengthened by sparring with a never-say-die attitude should find no challenge too great to handle. One who has undergone long years of physical pain and mental agony to learn one punch, one kick, should be able to face any task, no matter how difficult, and carry it through to the end. A person like this can truly be said to have learned karate. ~ Gichin Funakoshi
Mental Agony quotes by Gichin Funakoshi
So often, we're told that women's stories are unimportant. After all, what does it matter what happens in the main room, in the kitchen, or in the bedroom? Who cares about the relationships between mother, daughter, and sister? A baby's illness, the sorrows and pains of childbirth, keeping the family together during war, poverty, or even in the best of days are considered small and insignificant compared with the stories of men, who fight against nature to grow their crops, who wage battles to secure their homelands, who struggle to look inward in search of the perfect man. We're told that men are strong and brave, but I think women know how to endure, accept defeat, and bear physical and mental agony much better than men. The men in my life - my father, Z.G., my husband, my father-in-law, my brother-in-law, and my son - faced, to one degree or another, those great male battles, but their hearts - so fragile - wilted, buckled, crippled, corrupted, broke, or shattered when confronted with the losses women face every day...Our men try to act strong, but it is May, Yen-yen, Joy, and I who must steady them and help them bear their pain, anguish, and shame. ~ Lisa See
Mental Agony quotes by Lisa See
We're told that men are strong & brave, but I think women know how to endure, accept defeat & bear physical & mental agony much better than men. ~ Lisa See
Mental Agony quotes by Lisa See
Theories:
*During the off-months for the visitors, which are the on-months for the oysters, are the oysters packed in ice or tinned, and shipped to Paris?

*During the off-months for the visitors, which are the on-months for the oysters, do the serving staff shuck shells?
Or
*During the off-months for the visitors, which are the on-months for the oysters, are the restaurant, and the oysters, abandoned, and the staff laid off? ~ Joanna Walsh
Mental Agony quotes by Joanna Walsh
We're told that men are strong & brave, but I think women know how to endure, accept defeat & bear physical & mental agony much better than men. ~ Lisa See
Mental Agony quotes by Lisa See
To be obliged to sit still when mental agony urges us to stride up and down is the refinement of torture. Every ~ L.M. Montgomery
Mental Agony quotes by L.M. Montgomery
The whole universe is composed of name and form. Whatever we see is either a compound of name and form, or simply name with form which is a mental image. ~ Swami Vivekananda
Mental Agony quotes by Swami Vivekananda
Mental strength is extremely important. We must be able to put troublesome people out of our minds. They should not be able to distract our focus. This relates to casting our cares on the Lord (1 Peter 5:7). ~ Phil Pringle
Mental Agony quotes by Phil Pringle
In attempting to understand the elements out of which mental phenomena are compounded, it is of the greatest importance to remember that from the protozoa to man there is nowhere a very wide gap either in structure or in behaviour. From this fact it is a highly probable inference that there is also nowhere a very wide mental gap. ~ Bertrand Russell
Mental Agony quotes by Bertrand Russell
It's a certain tragedy when agony and resentment are all you have left connecting you to someone you once loved. ~ J.S.B. Morse
Mental Agony quotes by J.S.B. Morse
Love's agony is the pain of ink on a needle buried into skin, the necessary sting, and something beautiful blossoming under its touch. ~ Alice Broadway
Mental Agony quotes by Alice Broadway
I've really been grappling with depression. It's all linked with my cocaine and ecstasy abuse. ~ Robbie Williams
Mental Agony quotes by Robbie Williams
Accept the consequences of your actions in order to become the agent of your mental, physical, spiritual and material success. ~ Les Brown
Mental Agony quotes by Les Brown
Pleasure, scarcely in one instance, is ever able to reach ecstasy and rapture; and in no one instance can it continue for any time at its highest pitch and altitude. The spirits evaporate, the nerves relax, the fabric is disordered, and the enjoyment quickly degenerates into fatigue and uneasiness. But pain often, good God, how often! rises to torture and agony; and the longer it continues, it becomes still more genuine agony and torture. Patience is exhausted, courage languishes, melancholy seizes us, and nothing terminates our misery but the removal of its cause, or another event, which is the sole cure of all evil, but which, from our natural folly, we regard with still greater horror and consternation. ~ David Hume
Mental Agony quotes by David Hume
I am not qualified to deal with this. Why does everyone I meet seem to have mental problems?
Ah ... but did they have mental problems before meeting you? Who's the common denominator here, Dan?
I do not have mental problems! I say to the voice in my head, perfectly aware how damning it would sound were I to say it aloud. ~ Eoin Colfer
Mental Agony quotes by Eoin Colfer
Why, why, when one writes, does a sort of shackle bind one's imagination? I become conscious of a deadening mediocrity, perhaps a form of mental cowardice, and I long to break free, to let my imagination take wings. It doesn't - yet ... ~ Winifred Holtby
Mental Agony quotes by Winifred Holtby
Take it from me, that kind of torment causes you to retreat to a place in your mind where you are so strong that nothing and no one can bother you. Or so you think! What you don't realize is that each time an incident occurs, you retreat inside of yourself a little bit at a time, until one day you might not recognize who YOU are. ~ Yassin Hall
Mental Agony quotes by Yassin Hall
The length of time that the thought is held has also much to do with its accomplishment, for the thought-vibrations have to be active for a certain time to bring about a certain result. A certain length of time is required for the baking of a cake; if it is hurried the cake will be uncooked; with too great a heat it will burn. If the operator of the mental vibrations lacks patience then the power of thought will be wasted, even if it were half-way to its destiny, or still nearer to a successful issue. If too great a power of thought is given to the accomplishment of a certain thing it destroys while preparing it. ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan
Mental Agony quotes by Hazrat Inayat Khan
Your forgiveness or failure to forgive simply takes you nearer or further away from your ultimate goal. There are no two ways to deal with it, there is only one. ~ Stephen Richards
Mental Agony quotes by Stephen Richards
War.
Such a little word, such a depth of agony. Blood, death, conquest, starvation, plague, and horror. ~ David Gemmell
Mental Agony quotes by David Gemmell
With mental illness the trick is to not take your feelings so seriously; you're zooming in and zooming away from things that go from being too important to being not important at all. ~ Mark Vonnegut
Mental Agony quotes by Mark Vonnegut
There is more mental health cure found in a pile of dirt than in all the behavioral therapy and drugs in modern medical science. ~ J.S.B. Morse
Mental Agony quotes by J.S.B. Morse
One's entire life - his mental state, his health, his relationships, the material gains that he may or may not make - are all effects which have been set in motion by causes to be found somewhere in one's background, in this life or previous ones. ~ Brad Steiger
Mental Agony quotes by Brad Steiger
Industrial societies turn their citizens into image-junkies; it is the most irresistible form of mental pollution. Poignant longings for beauty, for an end to probing below the surface, for a redemption and celebration of the body of the world. Ultimately, having an experience becomes identical with taking a photograph of it. ~ Susan Sontag
Mental Agony quotes by Susan Sontag
Transience was my mother's family's way by necessity-in part because of poverty, and in part because of mental illness that went untreated, also a function of poverty. ~ Sarah Smarsh
Mental Agony quotes by Sarah Smarsh
How about after I'm a hundred percent, we have a hot, torrid affair. It'd be good for my emotional and mental health."

"My man would crush you like a bug, skinny boy. It's too bad my sister's only eighteen."

"Eighteen's legal."

"You go near my baby sis, I'll put you back in this hospital. ~ Nora Roberts
Mental Agony quotes by Nora Roberts
There is a vast gulf between perfection and near perfection, and that gulf is filled with agony. ~ Larry Correia
Mental Agony quotes by Larry Correia
Worry is evidence of an ill-controlled brain; it is merely a stupid waste of time in unpleasantness. If men and women practiced mental calisthenics as they do physical calisthenics, they would purge their brains of this foolishness. ~ Arnold Bennett
Mental Agony quotes by Arnold Bennett
They cultivated normality till it stood out of them all over in knobs, like the muscles upon professional strong men, and scarcely looked normal at all. And they talked interminably and loudly. From their bouncing mental health ordinary ill-balanced mortals shrank in alarm. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Mental Agony quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
The writer's life is frightful. I have experienced deep dispair, mental ill and attempt of suicide. ~ Lailah Gifty Akita
Mental Agony quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita
She's dressed in a white her soul doesn't reflect, a drop-dead beauty with drop-dead morals. ~ Halo Scot
Mental Agony quotes by Halo Scot
Unhappiness is a warped and distorted perception of reality. When a man says he is unhappy with his life and gives a written list of why he is dissatisfied, he has given a frank account of the state of his mind. If his mind is neglected and starved from stillness of thought, the nature of his thinking will reflect turbulence, anxiety and a lack of fulfilment.
However, when he is able to transcend thought, by being the observer (the witness) of his thinking and can take control of his mind, tranquility begins to flow through him. He is no longer a slave to his mental concepts, distinctions and limiting beliefs. ~ Christopher Dines
Mental Agony quotes by Christopher Dines
Gilbert: How Clark Gable turn every women's head so? Foolish young English girls would see a movie star in every GI with the same Yankee-doodle voice. Glamour in US privates named Jed, Buck or Chip, with their easy-come-by-gifts and Uncle Sam sweet-talk. Dreamboats in hooligans from Delaware or Arizona with fingernails that still carried soil from home, and eyes that crossed with any attempt at reading. Heart-throbs from men like those in the tea-shop, who dated their very close relatives and knew cattle as their mental equal. ~ Andrea Levy
Mental Agony quotes by Andrea Levy
By any objective measure, the modern business of "psychopharmacology" - the use of drugs to treat everything from anxiety and insomnia to schizophrenia itself - has to be judged a failure. Few patients, if any, are cured. The most violent manifestations of mental illness can be controlled, but with what long-term consequences, no one knows. ~ James Gleick
Mental Agony quotes by James Gleick
When I speak in casual conversation, I try to start a mental clock in my head. I actually learned this from Marty Nemko, a San Francisco career coach. He told me, "For the first thirty seconds after you start talking, imagine a green light in your head. After thirty seconds the light turns yellow. At sixty seconds, it's red." That's a good piece of advice for most any conversational situation. It takes some mental energy to monitor myself, but it works. ~ John Elder Robison
Mental Agony quotes by John Elder Robison
You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude
toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather
than allowing it to master you. ~ Brian Tracy
Mental Agony quotes by Brian Tracy
The old man was in agony because of gas. He farted tremendously, and then he belched. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Mental Agony quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Dogmatism is the greatest of mental obstacles to human happiness. ~ Bertrand Russell
Mental Agony quotes by Bertrand Russell
Persecution, whether it is physical, social, or mental, is one of the worst types of pain, but those who persecute us are to be the objects of our prayers. ~ Billy Graham
Mental Agony quotes by Billy Graham
Although there are several 'schools of thought' relating to why God allows mental, emotional, and physical afflictions, it essentially remains a mystery"

~ R. Alan Woods [2012] ~ R. Alan Woods
Mental Agony quotes by R. Alan Woods
Only men of moral and mental force, of a patriotic regard for the relationship of the two races, can be of real service as ministers in the South. Less theology and more of human brotherhood, less declamation and more common sense and love for truth, must be the qualifications of the new ministry that shall yet save the race from the evils of false teaching. ~ Fannie Barrier Williams
Mental Agony quotes by Fannie Barrier Williams
Gingerbread
I knew I had to get out of there
before the icing cracked and they discovered
that I'm burnt around the edges,
doughy in the center,
that what they thought was sugar
is salt.

If I was a good girl,
if I could satisfy their cravings,
if every dream in my misshapen head
didn't bite, I might have stayed at the table.

Wouldn't you run, too,
from such voracious love? ~ Christine Heppermann
Mental Agony quotes by Christine Heppermann
School teachers, taking them by and large, are probably the most ignorant and stupid class of men in the whole group of mental workers. ~ H.L. Mencken
Mental Agony quotes by H.L. Mencken
You are a woman with a heart and soul. The choices you make in this lifetime are yours and yours alone. If you love him, and I mean truly love him to the point where you would die in agony without him, then do not waste another second. Run to him, dove, because when someone means that to you there is nothing that should stand in your way. ~ Leal Irving
Mental Agony quotes by Leal Irving
Painting, especially much better than words, allows oneself to express the various stages of thought, including the deeper levels, the underground stages of the mental process. ~ Claes Oldenburg
Mental Agony quotes by Claes Oldenburg
Today I had to meet a man I haven't seen for ten years. And all that time I had thought I was remembering him well- how he looked and spoke and the sort of things he said. The first five minutes of the real man shattered the image completely. Not that he had changed. On the contrary. I kept on thinking, "Yes, of course, of course. I'd forgotten that he thought that- or disliked this, or knew so-and-so- or jerked his head back that way." I had known all these things once and I recognized them the moment I met them again. But they had all faded out of my mental picture of him, and when they were all replaced by his actual presence the total effect was quite astonishingly different from the image I had carried about with me for those ten years. How can I hope that this will not happen to my memory of H.? That it is not happening already? Slowly, quietly, like snow-flakes- like the small flakes that come when it is going to snow all night- little flakes of me, my impressions, my selections, are settling down on the image of her. The real shape will be quite hidden in the end. Ten minutes- ten seconds- of the real H. would correct all this. And yet, even if those ten seconds were allowed me, one second later the little flakes would begin to fall again. The rough, sharp, cleansing tang of her otherness is gone. ~ C.S. Lewis
Mental Agony quotes by C.S. Lewis
Mental illness is a disease and organic mental illness of young kids is becoming more and more of a disease ... we do need to talk about it. ~ Lisa Gardner
Mental Agony quotes by Lisa Gardner
Today I know that physical training should have as much place in the curriculum as mental training. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Mental Agony quotes by Mahatma Gandhi
Last night I swallowed froth
and its vulnerabilities within a populous coast.
I swallowed it like I was brought
forth from a deep agony.
And you were the host.
They say the sleep returns us to the senses,
I slept all the while fiddling with the pretenses
that I don't see you; that I won't see you.
I must have been a fool over the utterance of "who"
Last night I took a bow,
I must have been in love. ~ Ashfaq Saraf
Mental Agony quotes by Ashfaq Saraf

Illusions can and do create PHYSICAL Dis-Ease within our bodies. So it's most important to master our thoughts, to become cognizant of what we are spending our precious mental energy on each moment of every day. ~ Alaric Hutchinson
Mental Agony quotes by Alaric Hutchinson
Coping with any death is traumatic; suicide compounds the anguish because we are forced to deal with two traumatic events at the same time. According to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the level of stress resulting from the suicide of a loved one is ranked as catastrophic–equivalent to that of a concentration camp experience. ~ Carla Fine
Mental Agony quotes by Carla Fine
I beheld and still behold in anger and agony the eagerness of the world to throw piles of shit on those of us who want to savage or simply cannot help but savage the norms that so desperately need savaging. ~ Maggie Nelson
