I went to grab the perfect shade of green and realized I didn't have it. How could bamboo be colored with primary green? I blew out a frustrated breath and looked back into the box.

Rand was crouched beside me, his hand resting gently on my back. His touch was light but also strong and reassuring. I couldn't help but lean into him, even if I swore to myself I wasn't. "What's wrong?"

"This green isn't right for the bamboo." Because that was the most normal sentence I'd ever uttered.

"What about these colors?" he pulled out a pink crayon, then a blue, and finally a purple.

"Bamboo is green! But it isn't primary green."

To his credit, Rand didn't look at me like I had four heads. But then again, he picked up the blue crayon and handed it to me. "I think blue and pink and purple bamboo would be perfect."

My mouth hung open, and I tried to argue. "No! No, it's not."

Rand rubbed his hand over my head. "Kyle, it's coloring in a children's coloring book. You aren't entering this into an art contest. It can be blue and purple and yellow and orange if you want it to be. It can be out of the lines, it can be scribbles on the page. You aren't trying to imitate life right now. You're coloring a picture that I can hang on the fridge and we can smile at."

"The fridge?"

"I'm going to take the green away completely if you keep worrying about it."

TIA OR TARA has stopped applying makeup to my wife's face and is looking at Scottie with disapproval. The light is hitting this woman's face, giving me an opportunity to see that she should perhaps be working on her own makeup. Her coloring is similar to a manila envelope. There are specks of white in her eyebrows, and her concealer is not concealing. I can tell my daughter doesn't know what to do with this woman's critical look.

I was blessed with suck in the form of the traditional Snow White coloring: skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as coal. I always start my class with a coloring assignment using crayons to color three pages from a variety of coloring pages pinned to the wall. Pick 3. Color them densely, trying to get as much of the crayon on the paper as possible. Students find it frustrating because crayons are surprisingly hard to work with, but they usually have some fun doing it. Until...when the finished pages were pinned to the wall, all of the pages were colored just the way I assigned - but all the joy was gone. Something went wrong.

What was it?

This: I told them to color hard in order to do it right. And go straight to using force - thinking I was showing them a short-cut - - this took away the way of coloring they would have found on their own. By telling them just how to do it, I took the playing-around away, the gradual figuring out that brings something alive to this activity, makes it worth-while, and is transferable to other activities.

I realize now the best results came when I gave no instructions except, "spend time on this assignment." That was 3 years ago. Why did it take me so long to figure this out? ~ Lynda Barry
