The essence of Macbeth is seeing a great and intelligent man succumb to the forces of darkness. What gives the tragedy ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
Most independent filmmakers in Britain and North America work for commercial crews and then have their own projects when they've got enough money saved up to do so. ~ Ann Macbeth
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Ann Macbeth
To my surprise, I had not just doodled, I had prayed (I drew new shapes and names of each friend and focused on the person whose name stared at me from the paper). I had though OF each person as I drew but not ABOUT each person. I could just sit with them in a variation on stillness. I could hold them in prayer. ~ Sybil MacBeth
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Sybil MacBeth
Today's theater-goer must live in dread of walking into a theater and discovering that some classic work has been given a modernized, socially relevant setting. Oedipus gouges his eyes with a spoon at a 1950's malt shop; Macbeth napalms Banquo in Viet Nam, Julius Caesar dies in Dallas in 1963. More and more, American theater is coming to resemble a season of Quantum Leap. ~ Reduced Shakespeare Company
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Reduced Shakespeare Company
We've been told that with regard to seduction, "candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker," but in truth, rather, properly selected: "candy makes randy; liquor makes desire flicker"; or, as Shakespeare's porter said to Macduff: "[drink] provokes the desire but it takes away the performance." The wines and beers of antiquity, however, which were potent infusions of innumerable psychoactive plants, often requiring dilution with water and in which alcohol served rather as preservative then inebriating active principle. ~ Rick Doblin
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Rick Doblin
The plays he had liked were the one called Measure for Measure, and another one called Macbeth. They were easy to follow, and what happened in them was kind of like what happened in junior high school. ~ Jane Smiley
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Jane Smiley
I think that the BBC's attitude toward the show while it was in production was very similar to that which Macbeth had toward murdering people - initial doubts, followed by cautious enthusiasm and then greater and greater alarm at the sheer scale of the undertaking and still no end in sight. ~ Douglas Adams
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Douglas Adams
The attempt and not the deed confounds us. ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
People see a Macbeth film. They imagine they have seen Macbeth, and don't want to see it again; so when your Mr. Hackett or somebody comes round to act the play, he finds the house empty. That is what has happened to dozens of good plays whose authors have allowed them to be filmed. It shall not happen to mine if I can help it. ~ George Bernard Shaw
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by George Bernard Shaw
And you know, I hate to admit this, but I don't always think in terms of Shakespeare. When I eat, I do. When I'm at a restaurant, I'll think, 'Hmm, what would Macbeth have ordered?' ~ Liev Schreiber
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Liev Schreiber
Unsex me here and fill me from crown to toe full of direst cruelty That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose. Macbeth ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) was a profoundly important analysis of human states of mind - a kind of early philosophical/ psychological study. He sees 'melancholy' as part of the human condition, especially love melancholy and religious melancholy. His concerns are remarkably close to those which Shakespeare explores in his plays. Ambition, for example, Burton describes as 'a proud covetousness or a dry thirst of Honour, a great torture of the mind, composed of envy, pride and covetousness, a gallant madness' - words which could well be applied to Macbeth. ~ Ronald Carter
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Ronald Carter
We probably do not have a large enough industry here to ably support the independent filmmaker to move in and out. Much of the industry is based on full-time jobs here, institutionalised jobs. ~ Ann Macbeth
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Ann Macbeth
I read Macbeth as a secondary student in Nigeria and it was like an African play to me. It had all the right elements - witches, kings and assassinations. ~ Sefi Atta
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Sefi Atta
As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends, / I must not look to have; but, in their stead, / Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath, / Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not (5.3.25-28). ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
Macbeth: How does your patient, doctor?
Doctor: Not so sick, my lord, as she is troubled with thick-coming fancies that keep her from rest.
Macbeth: Cure her of that! Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased, pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow, raze out the written troubles of the brain, and with some sweet oblivious antidote cleanse the stuffed bosom of that perilous stuff which weighs upon her heart.
Doctor: Therein the patient must minister to himself. ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
He took the mess that was Macbeth and fixed it, and I wonder if he might, in some small way, be able to do the same for me. ~ Sarah Dessen
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Sarah Dessen
But wherefore could not I pronounce 'Amen'? I had most need of blessing, and 'Amen' Stuck in my throat. ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
Indeed the worthy housewife was of such a capricious nature, that she not only attained a higher pitch of genius than Macbeth, in respect of her ability to be wise, amazed, temperate and furious, loyal and neutral in an instant, but would sometimes ring the changes backwards and forwards on all possible moods and flights in one short quarter of an hour; performing, as it were, a kind of triple bob major on the peal of instruments in the female belfry, with a skilfulness and rapidity of execution that astonished all who heard her. ~ Charles Dickens
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Charles Dickens
Macbeth: We'll surely go to hell for this.
Lady Macbeth: And when we do, we'll rule that too. ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
Birkenau simmered in the July sun like some hideous brew, a witch's potion of blood, sweat, smoke, and excrement worthy of something the weird sisters might have cooked up in Macbeth. ~ J. Michael Dolan
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by J. Michael Dolan
Then she said, "Thorfinn!" quickly, and moved to him; but had hardly got to his side before he loosed his fingers and thumbs and plunged them down to the mattress like spear-points.
"No!Macbeth. Macbeth. Macbeth!" the name reached her like sling-shot.
Groa said, "They are the same man. I should know. I married both. ~ Dorothy Dunnett
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Dorothy Dunnett
Sometimes I wake up and think, 'I want to look like Sherlock Holmes today,' and other times I want to look like a witch from 'Macbeth.' ~ Edie Campbell
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Edie Campbell
If Shakespeare had to go on an author tour to promote Romeo and Juliet, he never would have written Macbeth. ~ Joyce Brothers
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Joyce Brothers
Still it cried 'Sleep no more!' to all the house: 'Glamis hath murder'd sleep, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more, - Macbeth shall sleep no more! ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
I had great English teachers in high school who first piqued my interest in Shakespeare. Each year, we read a different play - 'Othello,' 'Julius Caesar,' 'Macbeth,' 'Hamlet' - and I was the nerd in class who would memorize soliloquies just for the fun of it. ~ Ian Doescher
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Ian Doescher
We are here predominantly to support independent filmmakers and their needs. We are also here to assist people actually in their production, non-commercial people in their production. ~ Ann Macbeth
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Ann Macbeth
I'm just having a wonderful time. It's an interesting thing that I'm very comfortable with this material and I don't know why. Maybe it's because I did MacBeth. ~ F. Murray Abraham
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by F. Murray Abraham
Macbeth is a play that points to the advent, much like the turbulent last century of the Middle Ages, of a modern age gradually deracinated from its Christian grounding and increasingly enamored of a neopagan notion of virtu, of potentially infinite human achievement severed from metaphysical considerations. ~ William Shakespeare
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by William Shakespeare
What, then, can Shakespearean tragedy, on this brief view, tell us about human time in an eternal world? It offers imagery of crisis, of futures equivocally offered, by prediction and by action, as actualities; as a confrontation of human time with other orders, and the disastrous attempt to impose limited designs upon the time of the world. What emerges from Hamlet is--after much futile, illusory action--the need of patience and readiness. The 'bloody period' of Othello is the end of a life ruined by unseasonable curiosity. The millennial ending of Macbeth, the broken apocalypse of Lear, are false endings, human periods in an eternal world. They are researches into death in an age too late for apocalypse, too critical for prophecy; an age more aware that its fictions are themselves models of the human design on the world. But it was still an age which felt the human need for ends consonant with the past, the kind of end Othello tries to achieve by his final speech; complete, concordant. As usual, Shakespeare allows him his tock; but he will not pretend that the clock does not go forward. The human perpetuity which Spenser set against our imagery of the end is represented here also by the kingly announcements of Malcolm, the election of Fortinbras, the bleak resolution of Edgar.

In apocalypse there are two orders of time, and the earthly runs to a stop; the cry of woe to the inhabitants of the earth means the end of their time; henceforth 'time shall be no more.' I ~ Frank Kermode
Macduff And Macbeth quotes by Frank Kermode
