I talked about places, about the ways that we often talk about love of place, by which we mean our love for places, but seldom of how the places love us back, of what they give us. They give us continuity, something to return to, and offer a familiarity that allows some portion of our lives to remain connected and coherent ... And distant places give us refuge in territories where our own histories aren't so deeply entrenched and we can imagine other stories, other selves, or just drink up quiet and respite. ~ Rebecca Solnit
Love Of Place quotes by Rebecca Solnit
The fundamental love that a man needs in his life, if he is to have steady spiritual ease is the love of place where he was a child, and first became aware of the light, and the objects which the light illumined ... It is the hurt child become man that seeks the wilderness, wherein to rebuild himself. ~ Henry Williamson
Love Of Place quotes by Henry Williamson
I was asked to talk to a roomful of undergraduates in a university in a beautiful coastal valley. I talked about place, about the way we often talk about love of place, but seldom how places love us back, of what they give us. They give us continuity, something to return to, and offer familiarity that allows some portion of our lives to remain collected and coherent.

They give us an expansive scale in which our troubles are set into context, in which the largeness of the world is a balm to loss, trouble, and ugliness.

And distant places give us refuge in territories where our own histories aren't so deeply entrenched and we can imagine other stories, other selves, or just drink up quiet and respite.

The bigness of the world is redemption.

Despair compresses you into a small space, and a depression is literally a hollow in the ground. To dig deeper into the self, to go underground, is sometimes necessary, but so is the other route of getting out of yourself, into the larger world, into the openness in which you need not clutch your story and your troubles so tightly to your chest.

Being able to travel in both ways matters, and sometimes the way back into the heart of the question begins by going outward and beyond. This is the expansiveness that comes literally in a landscape or that tugs you out of yourself in a story.....

I told the student that they were at an age when they might begin to choose the places th ~ Rebecca Solnit
Love Of Place quotes by Rebecca Solnit
If the well-being of my loved place depends on the well-being of Earth, I have a good reason for supporting the well-being of your loved place. I have selfish as well as cosmopolitan reasons for preserving the home-places of all human beings. Cosmopolitanism becomes thicker and more potent with this realization. ~ Nel Noddings
Love Of Place quotes by Nel Noddings
Marriage is an effort to legalize love. It is out of fear. It is thinking about the future, about the tomorrows. Man always thinks of the past and the future, and because of this constant thinking about past and future, he destroys the present. And the present is the only reality there is. One has to live in the present. The past has to die and has to be allowed to die ... ~ Rajneesh
Love Of Place quotes by Rajneesh
The earth would be covered with men amongst whom there world would be almost no communication; we would make contact at some points without being united by a single one; everyone would remain isolated amongst the rest, everyone would think only of himself; our understanding would not develop; we would live without sensing anything, we would die without having lived; our entire happiness would consist of not knowing our misery; there would be neither goodness in our hearts, nor morality in our actions, and we would never have tasted the most delicious sentiment of the soul, which is the love of virtue. ~ Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Love Of Place quotes by Jean-Jacques Rousseau
A society deadened by a smothering network of laws while finding release in moral chaos is not likely to be either happy or stable. ~ Robert Bork
Love Of Place quotes by Robert Bork
And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18. may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, ~ Anonymous
Love Of Place quotes by Anonymous
Toby was right. Finn was my first love. But Toby, he was my second. And the sadness in that stretched like a thin cold river down the length of my whole life. ~ Carol Rifka Brunt
Love Of Place quotes by Carol Rifka Brunt
Little Phoebe was one of those persons who possess, as their exclusive patrimony, the gift of practical arrangement. It is a kind of natural magic that enables these favored ones to bring out the hidden capabilities of things around them; and particularly to give a look of comfort and habitableness to any place which, for however brief a period, may happen to be their home. A wild hut of underbrush, tossed together by wayfarers through the primitive forest, would acquire the home aspect by one night's lodging of such a woman, and would retain it long after her quiet figure had disappeared into the surrounding shade. ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
Love Of Place quotes by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Murmured to him nonsense, which is the language of love, ~ Julie Anne Long
Love Of Place quotes by Julie Anne Long
Too often scholars have thought and even suggested that what happened during and after Constantine was that the church sought to replace the pagan temples, priests, and sacrifices with their own. This is at best a half truth. If this had been primarily what was going on, we would have expected to find priestesses showing up in the mainstream church in and after the time of Constantine, since there were certainly priestesses in the pagan temples. But this we do not find in the historical record. This is because the church of that period was not merely trying to supplant pagan religion with Christian religion, though some of that was going on. More to the point, there was a rising tide of anti-Judaism, and one of its manifestations was this Old Testament hermeneutic. The Torah had been claimed as the church's book, Jews were being ostracized and then later ghettoized, and a hermeneutic of ministry was being adopted which co-opted the Old Testament for church use when it came to priests, temples, and sacrifices, and indeed sacraments in general. Thus ironically enough while the structure of the ecclesial church was becoming more Old Testamental, the church hierarchy was not only becoming less tolerant of Jews, it was forgetting altogether the Jewish character of Jesus' ministry and his modifications of the Passover that led to the Lord's Supper celebration of the early church in the first place. ~ Ben Witherington III
Love Of Place quotes by Ben Witherington III

Love Of Place quotes by K.Y. Robinson
When lust combines with love, feelings like dissatisfaction, lack of trust, lack of understanding, jealousy and possessiveness are produced ~ Nirja
Love Of Place quotes by Nirja
I was always hungry for love. Just once, I wanted to know what it was like to get my fill of it
to be fed so much love I couldn't take any more. Just once. ~ Haruki Murakami
Love Of Place quotes by Haruki Murakami
But we have only begun to love the earth. We have only begun to imagine the fullness of life. How could we tire of hope?-so much is in bud. ~ Denise Levertov
Love Of Place quotes by Denise Levertov
I think penguins are the most human of all the birds, which may be why people love them. They're cute, they stand upright and they look like they're wearing tuxedos. ~ Shia Labeouf
Love Of Place quotes by Shia Labeouf
I love the fact that Oprah Winfrey comes out number one [most admired women], regardless of who you are, because she has achieved so much in the business world. I think Republicans, for example, when Republican women rate her higher than Hillary Clinton, they obviously don't care that she supported Barack Obama. ~ Michel Martin
Love Of Place quotes by Michel Martin
I used to think mercy meant showing kindness to someone who didn't deserve it, as if only the recipient defined the act. The girl in between has learned that mercy is defined by its giver. Our flaws are obvious, yet we are loved and able t love, if we choose, because there is that bit of the divine still smoldering in us. ~ Susan Meissner
Love Of Place quotes by Susan Meissner
We could be like a father determined to provide everything for his family. He devotes every energy to that end and succeeds; only then does he discover that what they needed most, to be together as a family, has been neglected. And he reaps sorrow in place of contentment. ~ Boyd K. Packer
Love Of Place quotes by Boyd K. Packer
People do not feel anxious or weary when they follow
the Qur'an's morality. However, the enjoyment derived
from doing something with worldly aims in mind is very limited
and of short duration. When the benefits gained run
out, their eagerness to continue subsides and the aim
becomes regarded as a bother. But those who seek Allah's
favor are rewarded with pleasure, for they know that they
will be rewarded for their intention and not for the nature of
the act. Therefore, they will never get bored with doing it:
Their [the sacrificial animals'] flesh and blood does not
reach Allah, but your heedfulness does. In this way He
has subjected them to you so that you might proclaim
Allah's greatness for the way that He has guided you.
Give good news to those who do good. (Surat al-Hajj:
37)
Adnan Oktar
Harun Yahya

And so, no matter what they do, if they perform it in the
hope of winning Allah's pleasure, and if they keep on doing
so until the end of their lives, they will never get bored or
lose their enjoyment in doing it again and again.
No matter how long they do that deed, their love and
desire for earning Allah's favor will cause them to constantly
create new and beautiful things on their horizon. Having
rooted their morality in fear of Him, they form close relationships
and friendships with those around them; have no
desire for rank, position, ~ Harun Yahya
Love Of Place quotes by Harun Yahya
If he didn't frighten me, I'd be a bloody fool." Bronn gave a shrug. "Might be I could take him. Dance around him until he was so tired of hacking at me that he couldn't lift his sword. Get him off his feet somehow. When they're flat on their backs it don't matter how tall they are. Even so, it's chancy. One misstep and I'm dead. Why should I risk it? I like you well enough, ugly little whoreson that you are … but if I fight your battle, I lose either way. Either the Mountain spills my guts, or I kill him and lose Stokeworth. I sell my sword, I don't give it away. I'm not your bloody brother. ~ George R.R. Martin
Love Of Place quotes by George R.R. Martin
And whatever you do, do not break the mirror."
Without looking away from Mari, Bowe asked, "Why no'?" This seemed an ideal solution to him.
Jillian murmured, "The shock could . . . it could kill her."
No' ideal.
"I want to be alone with her," Bowe said.
She nodded. "We're going to the binding ceremony. Good luck, Bowen."
After they closed the door, Bowe could still hear Mari's father say, "Jill, why are you so confident in MacRieve?"
"Because he won't ever rest until he has her back with him," she replied before they descended the stairs.
Alone with Mari, Bowe said, "Lass, we're about to take a break from the mirror for a bit. How am I to marry you in front of all those witches in an eerie, embarrassing ceremony if you will no' look away?"
No reaction.
He put his arms around her waist and leaned down to kiss her neck, closing his eyes with pleasure just to be close to her once more.
"Doona wish to turn from your glass? Verra well. Then ask it some questions while you're here. Ask it how much your Lykae's missed you."
Had she blinked?
At her other ear, he murmured, "Ask it who Bowe loves."
Her lips parted. Her body seemed to begin thrumming, as if she was struggling with everything she had in her to be free.
"Aye, that's right. Ask it who's the only one Bowe's ever been in love with." He brushed the back of his fingers down her cheek, willing her to meet his gaze in the mirror. "And the last question w ~ Kresley Cole
Love Of Place quotes by Kresley Cole
North Korea was (and remains as of this writing in 2009) the last place on earth where virtually everything is grown on collective farms. The state confiscates the entire harvest and then gives a portion back to the farmer. ~ Barbara Demick
Love Of Place quotes by Barbara Demick
I don't want you to have to handle it. That's the horror of my past. But you ... you're the reality of my present. You're the proof I survived. The prize in the cereal box. ~ J. Kenner
Love Of Place quotes by J. Kenner
and were willing to suffer pain if necessary." A young woman in the spring and summer of 1967 was walking toward a door just as that door was springing open. A stage was set for her adulthood that was so accommodatingly extreme - so whimsical, sensual, and urgent - that behavior that in any other era would carry a penalty for the daring was shielded and encouraged. There was safety in numbers for every gorgeous madness; good girls wanting to be bad hadn't had so much cover since the Jazz Age. San Francisco - glowing with psychedelic mystique, the whole city plastered with Fillmore and Avalon posters of tangle-haired goddess girls - was preparing for a convocation (of hapless runaways from provincial suburbs, it would turn out), the Summer of Love, through which the term "flower children" would be coined, while in harsh, emotion-sparking contrast, helicopters were dropping thousands of U.S. boys into the swamps of Vietnam. ~ Sheila Weller
Love Of Place quotes by Sheila Weller
For many minutes, we did nothing but touch each other and absorb the sensation into our skin, as if love itself were a tangible blanket wrapping us in an unbreakable bond. ~ Juliette Cross
Love Of Place quotes by Juliette Cross
Part of what I love about games is that, even if you're best friends with somebody, it gives you these sort of moments where you get to interact on a completely different level. You all agree to these abstract rules, but there's nobody holding a gun to your head. ~ Rich Sommer
Love Of Place quotes by Rich Sommer
The way I saw it, I was fully capable of being treated with indifference that bordered on disdain while maintaining a strong sense of self-respect. I obeyed his commands, sure that I could fulfill this role while still protecting the sacred place inside of me that I knew deserved more. Different. Better.
But that isn't how it works. ~ Lena Dunham
Love Of Place quotes by Lena Dunham
Because of HIS presence in my life...I started feeling the world was a beautiful place again ... it held promise ~ Tawney Sablan
Love Of Place quotes by Tawney Sablan
In silence, I hear the music of your heart. ~ Debasish Mridha
Love Of Place quotes by Debasish Mridha
Being older, I began to understand the lyrics. At the beginning, it sounds like a guy is trying to get his girlfriend to secretly meet up with him at midnight. But it's an odd place for a tryst, a hanging tree, where a man was hung for murder. The murderer's lover must have had something to do with the killing, or maybe they were just going to punish her anyway, because his corpse called out for her to flee. That's weird obviously, the talking-corpse bit, but it's not until the third verse that "The Hanging Tree" begins to get unnerving. You realize the singer of the song is the dead murderer. He's still in the hanging tree. And even though he told his lover to flee, he keeps asking if she's coming to meet him. The phrase Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free is the most troubling because at first you think he's talking about when he told her to flee, presumably to safety. But then you wonder if he meant for her to run to him. To death. In the final stanza, it's clear that that's what he was waiting for. His lover, with her rope necklace, hanging dead next to him in the tree.

I used to think the murderer was the creepiest guy imaginable. Now, with a couple of trips to the Hunger Games under my belt, I decide not to judge him without knowing more details. Maybe his lover was already sentenced to death and he was trying to make it easier. To let her know he'd be waiting. Or maybe he thought the place he was leaving her was really worse than death. Didn't I wa ~ Suzanne Collins
Love Of Place quotes by Suzanne Collins
Think of those fingers as abilities. A creative person may write, paint, sculpt, or think up math formulae;
he or she might dance or sing or play a musical instrument. Those are the fingers, but creativity is the hand that gives them life.
& just as all hands are basically the same - form follows function - all creative people are the same once you get down to the place where the fingers join. ~ Stephen King
Love Of Place quotes by Stephen King
His lips parted. "Es tevi mīlu." I love you.

For an instant, I saw Jack above me. A moment of time. . . .

I blinked, and I was staring into starry amber eyes again. ~ Kresley Cole
Love Of Place quotes by Kresley Cole
He was a loner. He was a drifter. He loved talking to the mountains. He loved talking to the breeze. He loved talking to the trees. And he just wanted to drift. He wanted to inhale the myriad fragrances of different places. He was born free. And he loved to drift. He loved his motorcycle and his motorcycle loved him. But he did not believe in love and attachments. He just wanted to drift. He was addicted to his loneliness. He was free. And he loved to ride his motorcycle. ~ Avijeet Das

Blessed the one who loves truth continually and has not lent his mouth as an instrument of impiety by lying, for he fears the commandment about idle speech. ~ Ephrem The Syrian
Love Of Place quotes by Ephrem The Syrian
I'm not one of those people who wakes up and thinks, 'Bring on the day!' I have to have about 7 pints of coffee before I'm even remotely awake. But I love the golden hour in the evening, as hokey as that sounds. Just as the sun is about to set and you get those lovely shadows and everything looks gold and yellow. ~ Stacy London
Love Of Place quotes by Stacy London
Today in the west we are asking the question, why is man unhappy? Answer is very simple. We have created a very fast society but we do not have a cozy home, and without a cozy home we do not have a mental state of nerve relaxed personality. Without having a mental state of nerve relaxed personality, you cannot face this fastness of the outer world; it's impossible. ~ Harbhajan Singh Yogi
Love Of Place quotes by Harbhajan Singh Yogi
I think brilliant stuff comes out of working with limitations. One liners are very limiting, but that's what drew me to them in the first place. ~ Anthony Jeselnik
Love Of Place quotes by Anthony Jeselnik
She is unable to dream, think or love. In a woman, poetry never comes naturally, but always as the result of education. Only the woman of the world is a woman; the rest are simply females. ~ Edmond De Goncourt
