When you say lone gunman, everyone talks about loners and guns, but not about men ~ Rebecca Solnit
Loners quotes by Rebecca Solnit
My world, which once seemed so broad and full of possibilities, began to shrink as my need for security grew. Why could that be? It must be a quality we inherited from when our ancestors lived in caves. Groups provide protection; loners die. ~ Paulo Coelho
Loners quotes by Paulo Coelho
The man who is too isolated grows timid, abstracted, a little odd: He stumbles along amid realities like a sailor who has just come off his ship; he has lost the sense of the human lot; he seems to look on you as if you were a "proposition" to be inserted in a syllogism, or an example to be put down in a notebook. ~ Antonin Sertillanges
Loners quotes by Antonin Sertillanges
A good imagination may be the best friend of loners. ~ Kirsten Smith
Loners quotes by Kirsten Smith
I'm in the loners' society. I don't want to classify myself as anything. ~ Benedict Wong
Loners quotes by Benedict Wong
Socializing is as exhausting as giving blood. People assume we loners are misanthropes, just sitting thinking, 'Oh, people are such a bunch of assholes,' but it's really not like that. We just have a smaller tolerance for what it takes to be with others. It means having to perform. I get so tired of communicating. ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
Don't characterize loners as aloof or crowd seekers as arrogant. They may be living out their story. ~ Max Lucado
Loners quotes by Max Lucado
One of the things that confirmed Hyacinth's suspicion that America was an evil, lonely place was that people were islands unto themselves. And so when Avril drifted away, there was no friend or neighbor or pastor or coworker to reach out to and ask after her child. ~ Naomi Jackson
Loners quotes by Naomi Jackson
Animal lovers often tend to be misanthropes or loners, and so they transfer their affection to the creature in their control. ~ Paul Theroux
Loners quotes by Paul Theroux
People who want to be famous are really loners. Or they should be. ~ Katharine Hepburn
Loners quotes by Katharine Hepburn
Parents' ability to survive a child's unabating needs, wants, and demands ... varies enormously. Some people can give and give ... Whether children are good or bad, brilliant or just about normal, enormously popular or born loners, they keep their cool and say just the right thing at all times ... even when they are miserable themselves, inexhaustible springs of emotional energy, reserved just for children, keep flowing unabated. ~ Stella Chess
Loners quotes by Stella Chess
Loners are the opposition. Pensive, thoughtful and furious, marooned with stories that need to be spoken out loud and no one to listen, curries to be cooked and no one to taste, days and days of traffic signals to be manoeuvred and no one to congratulate except other loners: they find each other because like all good maps there are familiar signs that lead the way. The loner who both observes and creates worlds necessarily speaks with many tongues. It is with these tongues that she explores the contours of the centre and the margins, the signs for somewhere and elsewhere and here and now. ~ Deborah Levy
Loners quotes by Deborah Levy
Um, you don't have to join me, but if you're looking for a table, there are a couple good seats over there. He nodded toward the far end. ~ J.M. Richards
Loners quotes by J.M. Richards
It was this situation that led mathematician Chris Hauert and his colleagues to consider another possibility in an important evolutionary model published in Science in 2002. In Axelrod's study and in most previous theoretical models, individuals were forced to interact with each other. But what if they could choose not to interact? Rather than attempting to cooperate and risking being taken advantage of, a person could fend for herself. In other words, she could sever her connections to others in the network. Hauert called the people who adopt this strategy "loners."

Using some beautiful mathematics, Hauert and his colleagues showed that in a world full of loners it is easy for cooperation to evolve because there are no people to take advantage of the cooperators that appear. The loners fend for themselves, and the cooperators form networks with other cooperators. Soon, the cooperators take over the population because they always do better together than the loners. But once the world is full of cooperators, it is very easy for free riders to evolve and enjoy the fruits of cooperation without contributing (like parasites). As the free riders become the dominant type in the population, there is no one left for them to take advantage of; then, the loners once again take over -- because they want nothing to do, as it were, with those bastards. In short, cooperating can emerge because we can do more together than we can apart. But because of the free-rider problem, coop ~ Nicholas A. Christakis
Loners quotes by Nicholas A. Christakis
She is a loner, too bright for the slutty girls and too savage for the bright girls, haunting the edges and corners of the school like a sullen disillusioned ghost ~ Eleanor Catton
Loners quotes by Eleanor Catton
CHORUS OF NIGHT VOICES
Come out, come out, wherever you are, you dreamers and drowners, you loafers and losers, you shadow-seekers and orphans of the sun. Come out, come out, you flops and fizzler, you good-for-nothings and down-and-outers, a day's outcasts, dark's little darlin's. Come on, all you who are misbegotten and woebegone, all you with black thoughts and red-fever-visions, come on, you small-town Ishmaels with your sad blue eyes, you plain Janes and hard-luck guys, come, you gripers and groaners, you goners and loners, you sad sack and shlemiels, come on, come on, you pale romantics and pie-eye Palookas, you has-beens and never-will-bes, you sun-mocked and day-doomed denizens of the dar: come out into the night. ~ Steven Millhauser
Loners quotes by Steven Millhauser
Those who understand the true nature of humanity are always loners ~ Dean Cavanagh
Loners quotes by Dean Cavanagh
Look, you and I are in the same boat," he said softly. "We're loners in the crew. Unlike Bailey, we don't want to hook-up for good. We just want to let off some steam. We could be friends with benefits."
"Fuck buddies, huh?"
"I like your term better," Vaughn said, giving a flash of anger at the men still eyeing us. "I might need to leave you, so I can kick their asses."
"I think I can manage without you."
"Was that a masturbation hint?"
"No, but you bring up a very good point. I could blow off steam on my own."
Vaughn finished his beer then smiled. "I'll give you oral. No vibrator in the world can say the same."
Holding his gaze, I was silent until finishing my beer. Finally, I gave Vaughn a smile and nodded. "One night of empty awesome sex. Tomorrow, we act like acquaintances, not even friends. I want to be someone you barely remember exists."
"No problem, gingersnap. Do you like Harleys? Mine really likes snuggling between a hot girl's thighs."
"Stop while you're ahead."
Standing up, Vaughn held out a hand. I ignored his gesture and stood up on my own. When I noticed the two guys still watching us, I flipped them off before taking Vaughn's arm.
"Like they ever had a chance," I muttered and Vaughn's smile grew.
"Takes a special man to talk a girl out of abstinence."
"Whatever you need to tell yourself. ~ Bijou Hunter
Loners quotes by Bijou Hunter
I often wish I could just passively watch people without being expected to participate myself, like television. ~ M.E. Thomas
Loners quotes by M.E. Thomas
From day one it was like society was this violent, complicated dance and everybody had taken lessons but me. Knocked to the floor again, climbing to my feet each time, bloody and humiliated. Always met with disapproving faces, waiting for me to leave so I'd stop fucking up the party.
The wanted to push me outside, where the freaks huddled in the cold. Out there with the misfits, the broken, the glazed-eye types who can only watch as the normals enjoy their shiny new cars and careers and marriages and vacations with the kids.
The freaks spend their lives shambling around, wondering how they got left out, mumbling about conspiracy theories and bigfoot sightings. Their encounters with the world are marked by awkward conversations and stifled laughter, hidden smirks and rolled eyes. And worst of all, pity. ~ David Wong
Loners quotes by David Wong
There are no free and democratic and wealthy countries in the world that have US rate of gun violence. We have to worry about loners and alienated people. We have to do better on mental health. ~ David Brooks
Loners quotes by David Brooks
I wanted so badly to be seen, yet my pride prevented me from obviously asking to be seen. I did not want to be seen by demand, but rather by their choosing. ~ Magenta Periwinkle
Loners quotes by Magenta Periwinkle
And there are loners in rural communities who, at the equinox, are said to don new garments and stroll down to the cities, where great beasts await them, fat and docile. ~ Louis Aragon
Loners quotes by Louis Aragon
Two Windclan apprentices were wandering toward them. Fireheart twitched his ears to warn his friends they had an audience.
"Oh, yes," meowed Ravenpaw, raising his voice. "We loners eat Clan apprentices whenever we can catch one. ~ Erin Hunter
Loners quotes by Erin Hunter
I have no Native American heritage, but I had decided as a child that my spirit guide animal would be a bear. We were both loners and fighters, at least that's how I looked at it. I don't know how the Great Bear felt about it, as I had never given him the option to say no. ~ John Conroe
Loners quotes by John Conroe
I'm a writer. I could not or would not ever run a business. I don't even have a secretary. And contrary to some of the stereotypes, entrepreneurs are not loners. I am. ~ Peter Drucker
Loners quotes by Peter Drucker
The root of all fears. Not being accepted by those we care about. Being rejected and isolated. It's a primal fear. As a species, we are meant to be part of a group. A community. We mistrust loners because we don't understand them. With the exception of our romanticizing the loner in movies and novels, of course. ~ Susan Mallery
Loners quotes by Susan Mallery
You may say you won't interfere with another person's soul, but you do - merely by existing. The snag about it is the practical difficulty, so to speak, of not existing. ~ Dorothy L. Sayers
Loners quotes by Dorothy L. Sayers
Simply put, within AS, there is a wide range of function. In truth, many AS people will never receive a diagnosis. They will continue to live with other labels or no label at all. At their best, they will be the eccentrics who wow us with their unusual habits and stream-of-consciousness creativity, the inventors who give us wonderfully unique gadgets that whiz and whirl and make our life surprisingly more manageable, the geniuses who discover new mathematical equations, the great musicians and writers and artists who enliven our lives. At their most neutral, they will be the loners who never now quite how to greet us, the aloof who aren't sure they want to greet us, the collectors who know everyone at the flea market by name and date of birth, the non-conformists who cover their cars in bumper stickers, a few of the professors everyone has in college. At their most noticeable, they will be the lost souls who invade our personal space, the regulars at every diner who carry on complete conversations with the group ten tables away, the people who sound suspiciously like robots, the characters who insist they wear the same socks and eat the same breakfast day in and day out, the people who never quite find their way but never quite lose it either. ~ Liane Holliday Willey
Loners quotes by Liane Holliday Willey
But when I am around strangers, I turn into a conversational Mount St. Helens. I'm dormant, dormant, quiet, quiet, old-guy loners build log cabins on the slopes of my silence and then, boom, it's 1980. Once I erupt, they'll be wiping my verbal ashes off their windshields as far away as North Dakota. ~ Sarah Vowell
Loners quotes by Sarah Vowell
Sensitivity to the sound of one's name is a special gift of loners. Because the loner does not often hear his name, he reacts dramatically in the rare event the word is uttered. Source: me. ~ Wataru Watari
Loners quotes by Wataru Watari
Loners can play well with others-the right others, ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
In other words, paradoxically, loners are the truth philanthropists. Loving nothing is equivalent to loving everything. Damn, it's only a matter of time before they dub me Mother Hikigaya. ~ Wataru Watari
Loners quotes by Wataru Watari
Loners live among the mob, so the mob mistakes us for its own, presuming and assuming. When the mob gets too close, the truth is revealed. Running or walking away, chased or free, any which way, we tell the mob in effect I don't need you. ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
The lonesome and desperate kids out there, that pain will translate to magic perhaps. ~ Tenacious D
Loners quotes by Tenacious D
Whenever one speaks of lonely people one takes too much for granted. One thinks people all know what they're dealing with. No, they do not. They've never seen a lonely person, they've simply hated him without knowing him. They've been his neighbours who've used him up, they were the voices in the next room who tempted him. They roused things up against him, getting them to make a din and drown him out. Children ganged up against him when he was a tender child, and at every stage of his growing up he grew hostile to grown-ups . They tracked him to his hiding-place like an animal of chase and throughout his long youth there was no closed season. And when he didn't allow himself to be worn out so that he got away they yelled about what came forth from him and called it ugly and were suspicious of it. And as he didn't stop they grew more obvious and gobbled up his food and breathed up his air and spat into his poverty so that he himself became disgusted at it. They brought him into disrepute as if he were a contagion and threw stones at him to speed his departure. And they were right to follow their age-old instinct: because he really was their enemy. But then when he didn't look up they had second thoughts. They suspected that in all of this they had acted as he had willed them to act; they had strengthened him in his solitude and had helped him separate himself from them for ever. ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
Loners quotes by Rainer Maria Rilke
America trembles in fear of loners, yet Charles Manson is a social butterfly. ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
Some socks are loners They can't live in pairs. ~ Wendy Cope
Loners quotes by Wendy Cope
We entrepreneurs are loners, vagabonds, troublemakers. Success is simply a matter of finding and surrounding ourselves with those open-minded and clever souls who can take our insanity and put it to good use. ~ Anita Roddick
Loners quotes by Anita Roddick
People didn't stick because I was made of fucking Teflon. I'd always told myself that it was better that way, that being alone was easier. That I wasn't a coward for easing my way out of friendships before they could really start. ~ Sarah Gailey
Loners quotes by Sarah Gailey
Starting this day, she was no longer going to be quiet, a wallflower no more. ~ Magenta Periwinkle
Loners quotes by Magenta Periwinkle
I should have written you a letter, it was too late to make the deaths of my brothers an excuse. Since they died, I wrote a book; why not a letter? A mysterious but truthful answer is that while I can gear myself up to do a novel, letters, real-life communications, are too much for me. I used to rattle them off easily enough; why is the challenge of writing to friends and acquaintances too much for me now? Because I have become such a solitary, and not in the Aristotelian sense: not a beast, not a god. Rather, a loner troubled by longings, incapable of finding a suitable language and despairing at the impossibility of composing messages in a playable key
as if I no longer understood the codes used by the estimable people who wanted to hear from me and would have so much to reply if only the impediments were taken away. ~ Saul Bellow
Loners quotes by Saul Bellow
There is much to be said for post-menopausal celibacy. Sex is rough on loners because you have to have somebody else around, but now I don't. No more diets to stay slim and desirable: I've had sex and I've had food, and I'd rather eat. ~ Florence King
Loners quotes by Florence King
Yet introverts and loners are not one and the same thing. ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
Strong creatures don't form herds.
Have they never heard of a lone wolf?
Cats are cute, and wolves are cool.
So in essence, loners are cute and cool. ~ Wataru Watari
Loners quotes by Wataru Watari
A lot of times the characters I play tend to be kind of loners or they don't have best friends or best buddies. ~ Michael Shannon
Loners quotes by Michael Shannon
In my mind, I took what had just happened to my shoulder, and I put it into a box. A box with a tight lid. I dropped the box into a deep brick-lined oubliette. It landed somewhere next to my mother's last words and my searing loneliness and everything else I needed to forget, and just like that, I was fine again. ~ Sarah Gailey
Loners quotes by Sarah Gailey
She was of another world; different. But by then, secretly, so was I. ~ Sarah Winman
Loners quotes by Sarah Winman
I do tend to have characters that I guess are in some way loners or dealing with obstacles that they have to confront that ultimately make them a better person in a way. ~ Craig Gillespie
Loners quotes by Craig Gillespie
We have often had this particular exchange about climate and landscape and why we both feel so lonely here uprooted. It was what each of us had wanted of course.Besides wanting to experience a place we hated, we wanted to be insomniacs and loners, losers and drop-outs. To know the sky was the only location of meaning and joy left to us. ~ Fanny Howe
Loners quotes by Fanny Howe
Maybe this is who I really am.
Not a loner, exactly.
But someone who can be alone. ~ Gary Shteyngart
Loners quotes by Gary Shteyngart
We do not require company. In varying degrees, it bores us, drains us, makes our eyes glaze over. Overcomes us like a steamroller. Of course, the rest of the world doesn't understand. ~ Anneli Rufus
Loners quotes by Anneli Rufus
Reading requires a loner's temperament, a high tolerance for silence, and an unhealthy preference for the company of people who are imaginary or dead. ~ David Samuels
Loners quotes by David Samuels
Protagonists are always loners, almost by definition. ~ Pauline Kael
Loners quotes by Pauline Kael
In other people's company I felt I was dull, gloomy, unwelcome, at once bored and boring ... ~ Andre Gide
Loners quotes by Andre Gide
For in America this season is decreed "family season". (Eat your hearts out, you pitiable loners who don't have families!) Melancholy as Thanksgiving is, the Christmas-New year's season is far worse and lasts far longer, providing rich fund of opportunities for self-medicating, mental collapse, suicide and public mayhem with firearms. In fact it might be argued that the Christmas-New year's season which begins abruptly after Thanksgiving is now the core-sason of American life itself, the meaning of American life„ the brute existencial point of it.
How without families must envy us who bask in parental love, in the glow of yule-logs burning in fireplaces stoked by our daddie's robust pokers, we who are stuffed to bursting with our mummie's frantic holiday cooking; how you wish you could be us, pampered/protected kids tearing expensive foil wrappings off too many packages to count, gathered about the Christmas tree on Christmas morning as Mummy gently chided: "Skyler! Bliss! Show Daddy and Mummy what you've just opened, please! And save the little cards, so you know who gave such nice things to you ~ Joyce Carol Oates
Loners quotes by Joyce Carol Oates
We choose to be alone always whether we are in crowd or in family or everywhere. That's who we are. That's what we like. ~ Suyasha Subedi
