There grows in the North Country a certain kind of youth of whom it may be said that he is born to be a Londoner. ~ Arnold Bennett
Londoner quotes by Arnold Bennett
British rule also left its mark on Hong Kong in a more important and sustainable way. It led to the rise of a people that remains quintessentially Chinese and yet share a way of life, core values and an outlook that resemble at least as much, if not more, that of the average New Yorker or Londoner, rather than that of their compatriots in China. ~ Steve Tsang
Londoner quotes by Steve Tsang
My Dad says that being a Londoner has nothing to do with where you're born. He says that there are people who get off a jumbo jet at Heathrow, go through immigration waving any kind of passport, hop on the tube and by the time the train's pulled into Piccadilly Circus they've become a Londoner. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Londoner quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
When she paused, I embraced the opportunity to turn the trend of conversation by saying:
'I am afraid that I was a little rude to you last night,' but I hardly expected such a blunt reply as she made.
'Yes, you were exceedingly rude, and I hate rude men.'
'I hope you don't hate me,' I cried, laughingly.
'Oh no, not quite. You're a Londoner, you see.'
This was very severe. I confess I was hardly prepared for it, and I was tempted to say something cutting in reply, but checked myself, bowed, and merely remarked:
'Which is not my fault. Therefore pity me rather than blame me.'
'Certainly I do that,' she replied, with an amusing seriousness.
("The Doomed Man") ~ Dick Donovan
Londoner quotes by Dick Donovan
As a Londoner I was able to see how the world of power and money cast its shadow on those who failed. ~ Peter Ackroyd
Londoner quotes by Peter Ackroyd
I would really like to play someone contemporary, as I've done lots of period pieces. I would love to play an American bimbo or a grimy Londoner. But I'm probably more suited in people's minds to playing a corseted victim. ~ Rachel Hurd-Wood
Londoner quotes by Rachel Hurd-Wood
Robin: When you do marry, who will you marry?
Maria: I have not quite decided yet, but I think I shall marry a boy I knew in London.
Robin(yells): What? Marry some mincing nincompoop of a Londoner with silk stockings and a pomade in his hair and face like a Cheshire cheese? You dare do such a thing! You - Maria - if you marry a London man I'll wring his neck! ( ... ) I'll not only wring his neck, I'll wring everybody's necks, and I'll go right away out of the valley, over the hills to the town where my father came from, and I won't ever come back here again. So there!
( ... )
Maria: Why don't you want me to marry that London boy?
Robin(shouting): Because you are going to marry me. Do you hear, Maria? You are going to marry me. ~ Elizabeth Goudge
Londoner quotes by Elizabeth Goudge
My identity comprises of more than just my faith. I am a proud Muslim, but I am also a liberal, a Briton, a Pakistani, a Londoner, a father, a product of the globalised world who speaks English, Arabic and Urdu. ~ Maajid Nawaz
Londoner quotes by Maajid Nawaz
No one charged you with being my savior," Camille's voice shook, the confrontation not something she really wanted.
"No one had to charge me with it. I made the decision on my own the night the Christina went down." Oscar sealed his lips as if he'd let something slip he hadn't intended.
"What are you talking about?" she asked, her boots slipping once on the moss. He avoided her by looking out at the stream. He took a few moments to answer, and when he did he still didn't meet her stare.
"Do you remember when you woke up on the Londoner? When you asked me if I'd seen your father?"
Camille nodded, and hoped their argument was over. "You said you didn't see him."
He shook his head. "I lied. I did see him in the water. He was trying to stay above the surface after I got ahold of the dory."
It was as though freezing shocks of ocean water were striking Camille in the face all over again. She jumped from the rock, the hem of her skirt nearly tripping her.
"Did you row to him? Did you try and save him?"
He shook his head again. "No."
"Why not?" she screeched. "Oscar, how could you not help him?" She couldn't blink. She couldn't do anything but stare at him in disbelief. He'd abandoned her father, the man who had given him everything.
"Because I spotted you," he answered, hardly loud enough for her to hear. "I saw you in the waves and I chose to row to you."
She loosened her fists, stunned.
Oscar sat down on the rock, the toe ~ Angie Frazier
Londoner quotes by Angie Frazier
I am a Londoner and I love my home. There are many things about this country which drive me crazy, but when I am in America, I feel wrong there. ~ Toby Stephens
Londoner quotes by Toby Stephens
No born Londoner (it is different with people of Scotch or Irish origin) now says 'bloody,' unless he is a man of some education. The word has, in fact, moved up in the social scale and ceased to be a swear word for the purposes of the working classes. The current London adjective, now tacked on to every noun, is
. No doubt in time
, like 'bloody,' will find its way into the drawing room and replaced by some other word. ~ George Orwell
Londoner quotes by George Orwell
I do love New York. But I'm a Londoner at heart. ~ Kate Moss
Londoner quotes by Kate Moss
The average Londoner knows just one neighbour. I travel a lot, and I'm always surprised by the strong sense of community in some countries. We've lost something fundamentally human, and we don't even realise it. ~ Lily Cole
Londoner quotes by Lily Cole
Making good use of that room?" Lucius asked them, having a laugh with the trollop at his side. Oscar stood unwavering in the center of the hall, forcing Lucius to skirt around him.
"You're a pig," Camille replied, but he only squealed and snorted like a sow.
"Either of you figure out yet how we're going to get home?" Lucius asked. "Don't get me wrong. I'm perfectly content here for the time being."
A pair of sloppy-looking men stumbled through the front door, obviously drunk, and howling like wolves. Oscar stepped up beside Camille, blocking her from their view. His shoulders and chest were the perfect shield against whatever misguided attentions the men might show her.
"When did you become concerned about the three of us sticking together?" she asked Lucius. "We haven't set eyes on you since you disappeared into the orlop deck of the Londoner."
Lucius nodded over his shoulder. "I'm being nursed back to health, can't you see?"
She glared at him. Why someone like Lucius had survived the shipwreck instead of a worthier person like her father angered her. Maybe she really was cursed.
"You don't have a plan, do you?" Lucius asked Oscar, who continued to block Camille from the two men anxiously waiting by the front door for someone to greet them. Lucius snorted a laugh. "Should'a guessed as much."
Oscar took a step forward, pressing Camille between his chest and Lucius's.
"What do you mean by that?"
Lucius laced his fingers togethe ~ Angie Frazier
Londoner quotes by Angie Frazier
It is not the walls that make the city, but the people who live within them. The walls of London may be battered, but the spirit of the Londoner stands resolute and undismayed. ~ George VI
Londoner quotes by George VI
Being a seasoned Londoner, Martin gave the body the "London once-over" - a quick glance to determine whether this was a drunk, a crazy or a human being in distress. The fact that it was entirely possible for someone to be all three simultaneously is why good-Samaritanism in London is considered an extreme sport - like BASE jumping or crocodile wrestling. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Londoner quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
As a typical Londoner, Gurcan had a high tolerance for random thoughtlessness; after all, if you live in the big city there's no point complaining that it's a big city, but even that tolerance has its limit and the name of that limit is 'taking the piss'. ~ Ben Aaronovitch
Londoner quotes by Ben Aaronovitch
I don't feel like a Londoner. ~ Tom Stoppard
Londoner quotes by Tom Stoppard
From my bed I can see the moon tonight, so bright and ripe and salmon pink it looks as if it might drop from the sky. I imagine pirates on deck just before sunrise with the wood groaning and the moonlight streaking across the water in a straight line from the horizon. Did Caesar see the moon exactly so as he strode down the Roman Forum on the way to some debaucherous celebration? And what about Moses and Galileo and some wretched young Londoner pulling a cart full of corpses during the plague? or an American Indian crouched by a fire in a small clearing surrounded by huge primeval trees that glow orange from the flame? ~ Jonathan Hull
