We may think of volcanic islands like Ascension as unusual because their recent origin and remoteness mean their ecosystems are made up of a motley crew of mariner migrants. But much of the world is like that. Nature is constantly in flux, and few ecosystems go back very far. Only ten thousand years ago, much of Europe and North America were covered in thick ice. All soil had been scraped away and with it most forms of life. Everything we see today in these former glaciated zones has either returned or arrived for the first time since the ice retreated.
Looked at from this perspective, the spread of alien species today is merely a continuation of a natural process of the colonization begun when the ice retreated. A broad time horizon shows there is no such thing as a native species. All lodgings are temporary and all ecosystems in a constant flux, the victims of circumstance and geological accident. As the pioneer British ecologist Charles Elton argued, "Were it not for the ice age, we [in Britain] should probably have wonderful mixed forests with wild magnolias and laurels and epiphytic orchids, such as . . . in China. ~ Fred Pearce
Laurels quotes by Fred Pearce
But I think the one thing that I can say about us is that we're very consistent about certain things and part of that is our desire to do the very best work that we can and not rest on our laurels, or not allow formula to come into what we do. ~ Michael Stipe
Laurels quotes by Michael Stipe
The Pirate Queen did not seem amused. I hope you intend to bring that poor girl more happiness than it appears you have already brought her!" "Have no fear of that, milord. Following my business with you, and my fleet, I'll have Colin take me to her island so I can claim her and rectify the situation immediately." He raised his glass and gave a sly grin. "Her days of plundering the Spanish Main are, I can assure you, about to end." "I should damn well hope so," Nelson snapped. "Should the Admiralty in London learn of your antics, it'd be disastrous enough, but if you were to involve yourself with a pirate, they'd waste no time demanding your resignation regardless of how many laurels your career boasts." "All the more reason to put an end to Her Majesty's piratical pursuits, now. ~ Danelle Harmon
Laurels quotes by Danelle Harmon
Mountain laurels bloom the universe
Edged in pink, not quite open ~ Wendy Murray
Laurels quotes by Wendy Murray
A lot can happen in that time. And, seriously, if you have to give up a dream to be with a guy, maybe you've chosen the wrong guy."
Chelsea's brow furrowed and she fiddled with her fingers. "And what if the time comes and the dream doesn't seem worhth it?"
David's and Tamani's face seemed to float before Laurel's eyes, the Academy looming in the background. She shrugged and forced the images from her mind. "Then maybe it was the wrong dream. ~ Aprilynne Pike
Laurels quotes by Aprilynne Pike
It's great to talk about how good things are now. But we can't sit on our laurels and expect that our time will sustain itself if we don't do a better job on issues like education ... It's absolutely the case that the low cost of college tuition that I was able to enjoy and the financial aid I was able to receive made my education possible. ~ Wendy Davis
Laurels quotes by Wendy Davis
Early laurels weigh like lead and of many of the boys whom I knew at Eton, I can say that their lives are over ... Once again romanticism with its death wish is to blame, for it lays an emphasis on childhood, on a fall from grace which is not compensated for by any doctrine of future redemption. ~ Cyril Connolly
Laurels quotes by Cyril Connolly
We did a lot of press for the last film and now for this one. We don't rest on our laurels. ~ Shawn Wayans
Laurels quotes by Shawn Wayans
Many are so used to laurels and presume that they are real winners. ~ Dejan Stojanovic
Laurels quotes by Dejan Stojanovic
It was absolutely thrilling to meet Laurel and Hardy, they were so nice. ~ Norman Wisdom
Laurels quotes by Norman Wisdom
You Can't Rest on Your Laurels. Your Own Body of Work Is Yet to Come. ~ Barack Obama
Laurels quotes by Barack Obama
Whether in chains or in laurels, liberty knows nothing but victories. ~ Wendell Phillips
Laurels quotes by Wendell Phillips
To be defeated and not submit, is victory; to be victorious and rest on one's laurels, is defeat. ~ Jozef Pilsudski
Laurels quotes by Jozef Pilsudski
It's your call," he said softly, "but whatever you decide, I'll help you." He placed a soft, warm hand at the back of her neck and Laurel's breath caught in her chest. "Whatever you need, I'll be. If you need the science geek to give you answers from a textbook, I'm your guy; if you just want a friend to sit by you in bio and help you feel better when you're sad, I'm still your guy." His thumb slowly stroked across her earlobe and down her cheek. "And if you need someone to hold you and protect you from anyone in the world who might want to hurt you, then I am definitely your guy." His pale-blue eyes bore into hers, and for a second she couldn't breath. "But it's all up to you," he whispered. ~ Aprilynne Pike
Laurels quotes by Aprilynne Pike
And since I'm marrying into the Quartet, I have certain privileges and duties. If you're sleeping with Laurel - "
"I'm not sleeping with Laurel. We're dating."
"Right, and the two of you are just going to hold hands, admire the moon, and sing camp songs."
"For a while. Minus the singing. ~ Nora Roberts
Laurels quotes by Nora Roberts
I was introducing [director and producer] Hal Roach - Mr. Roach was 100 years old, he was one of the fathers of early days in films, he put Laurel with Hardy, he created the Our Gang kids, and all these silent movies he did - he was a giant. ~ Billy Crystal
Laurels quotes by Billy Crystal
do you reckon to win the everlasting laurels without a conflict? ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Laurels quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
But at the same time you can't ... ~ Angela Davis
Laurels quotes by Angela Davis
Georgia is in an enviable position today, but we can't rest on our laurels. ~ Roy Barnes
Laurels quotes by Roy Barnes
I gotta say" - Apollo broke the silence - "these kids did okay." He cleared his throat and began to recite: "Heroes win laurels - "
Um, yes, first class," Hermes interrupted, like he was anxious to avoid Apollo's poetry. ~ Rick Riordan
Laurels quotes by Rick Riordan
I lay and cried, and began to feel again, to admit I was human, vulnerable, sensitive. I began to remember how it had been before; how there was that germ of positive creativeness. Character is fate; and damn, I'd better work on my character. I had been withdrawing into a retreat of numbness: it is so much safer not to feel, not to let the world touch one. But my honest self revolted at this, hated me for doing this. Sick with conflict, destructive negative emotions, frozen into disintegration I was, refusing to articulate, to spew forth these emotions - they festered in me, growing big, distorted, like pus-bloated sores. Small problems, mentions of someone else's felicity, evidence of someone else's talents, frightened me, making me react hollowly, fighting jealousy, envy, hate. Feeling myself fall apart, decay, rot, and the laurels wither and fall away, and my past sins and omissions strike me with full punishment and import. All this, all this foul, gangrenous, sludge ate away at my insides. Silent, insidious. ~ Sylvia Plath
Laurels quotes by Sylvia Plath
Never rest on your laurels. Never quit. Never stop working to make the world a better place. That's our unfinished business. ~ Hilary Clinton
Laurels quotes by Hilary Clinton
As for describing the smell of a spaniel mixed with the smell of torches, laurels, incense, banners, wax candles and a garland of rose leaves crushed by a satin heel that has been laid up in camphor, perhaps Shakespeare, had he paused in the middle of writing Antony and Cleopatra - But Shakespeare did not pause. Confessing our inadequacy, then, we can but note that to Flush Italy, in these the fullest, the freest, the happiest years of his life, meant mainly a succession of smells. Love, it must be supposed, was gradually losing its appeal. Smell remained. Now that they were established in Casa Guidi again, all had their avocations. Mr. Browning wrote regularly in one room; Mrs. Browning wrote regularly in another. The baby played in the nursery. But Flush wandered off into the streets of Florence to enjoy the rapture of smell. He threaded his path through main streets and back streets, through squares and alleys, by smell. He nosed his way from smell to smell; the rough, the smooth, the dark, the golden. He went in and out, up and down, where they beat brass, where they bake bread, where the women sit combing their hair, where the bird-cages are piled high on the causeway, where the wine spills itself in dark red stains on the pavement, where leather smells and harness and garlic, where cloth is beaten, where vine leaves tremble, where men sit and drink and spit and dice - he ran in and out, always with his nose to the ground, drinking in the essence; or with his nose in ~ Virginia Woolf
Laurels quotes by Virginia Woolf
I don't want to be remembered for my activities of my past, but for what I am doing today. By that I mean, I don't want to rest on my laurels satisfied by my past deeds. I want to contribute to the advancement of our Folk each and everyday. ~ Richard Kemp
Laurels quotes by Richard Kemp
Death is a beautiful naked man who looks like Apollo, and he is not satisfied with those who wither away in old age. Death is a perfectionist, he likes the young and beautiful, he wants to stroke our hair and caress the sinew that binds our muscle to the bone. He does all he can to meet us, our faces gladden his heart, and he stands in our path to challenge us because he likes a clean fair fight, and after the fight he likes to befriend us, clap us on the shoulder, and make us laugh at all the pettiness and folly of the living. At the conclusion of a battle he wanders amongst the dead, raising them up, placing laurels upon the brows of those most comely, and he gathers them together as his own children and takes them away to drink wine that tastes of honey and gives them the sense of proportion that they never had in life ~ Louis De Bernieres
Laurels quotes by Louis De Bernieres
You know what Hans told me last week?" she says as I open the door of my fitting room. "He told me to write down a list of everything I wanted to say about that women-and then tear it up. He said I'd feel a sense of freedom."
"Oh right," I say interestedly. "So what happened?"
"I wrote it all down," says Laurel. "And then I mailed it to her! ~ Sophie Kinsella
Laurels quotes by Sophie Kinsella
Don't rest on your laurels. There's always going to be someone behind you who's going to be better than you. So you need to get out there and keep working. ~ Sheila Johnson
Laurels quotes by Sheila Johnson
Even I could not guess what misgivings lay behind Perrin's clear eyes. Perhaps none; perhaps he trusted Laurel without question. Perhaps he was right. All I knew is what Laurel's hands said when she spoke Corbet's name. And how often she said it, until it seemed, like the falling of autumn leaves, or the long ribbons of migrating birds, one of the season's changes. ~ Patricia A. McKillip
Laurels quotes by Patricia A. McKillip
From golden showers of the ancient skies,
On the first day, and the eternal snow of stars,
You once unfastened giant calyxes
For the young earth still innocent of scars:

Young gladioli with the necks of swans,
Laurels divine, of exiled souls the dream,
Vermilion as the modesty of dawns
Trod by the footsteps of the seraphim;

The hyacinth, the myrtle gleaming bright,
And, like the flesh of woman, the cruel rose,
Hérodiade blooming in the garden light,
She that from wild and radiant blood arose!

And made the sobbing whiteness of the lily
That skims a sea of sighs, and as it wends
Through the blue incense of horizons, palely
Toward the weeping moon in dreams ascends!

Hosanna on the lute and in the censers,
Lady, and of our purgatorial groves!
Through heavenly evenings let the echoes answer,
Sparkling haloes, glances of rapturous love!

Mother, who in your strong and righteous bosom,
Formed calyxes balancing the future flask,
Capacious flowers with the deadly balsam
For the weary poet withering on the husk. ~ Stephane Mallarme
Laurels quotes by Stephane Mallarme
As you get older, the assumption is you get wiser. I try to earn it by not staying still, not resting on laurels. A lot of people in other professions are retired at my age. I care about music more than ever. ~ Lorin Maazel
Laurels quotes by Lorin Maazel
T is sweet to win, no matter how, one's laurels,
By blood or ink; 't is sweet to put an end
To strife; 't is sometimes sweet to have our quarrels,
Particularly with a tiresome friend:
Sweet is old wine in bottles, ale in barrels;
Dear is the helpless creature we defend
Against the world; and dear the schoolboy spot
We ne'er forget, though there we are forgot.
But sweeter still than this, than these, than all,
Is first and passionate Love - it stands alone,
Like Adam's recollection of his fall;
The Tree of Knowledge has been plucked - all 's known
And Life yields nothing further to recall
Worthy of this ambrosial sin, so shown,
No doubt in fable, as the unforgiven
Fire which Prometheus filched for us from Heaven. ~ George Gordon Byron
Laurels quotes by George Gordon Byron
Deathless laurel is the victor's due. ~ John Dryden
Laurels quotes by John Dryden
I look at everything I've done critically - but I think that's the job of an actor. If you ever sit on your laurels or think that you're good - in a way, I don't then think you're pushing yourself. ~ Nicole Kidman
Laurels quotes by Nicole Kidman
I will not go so far as to say, with a living poet, that the world knows nothing of its greatest men; but there are forms of greatness, or at least of excellence, which "die and make no sign"; there are martyrs that miss the palm, but not the stake; heroes without the laurel, and conquerors without the triumph. ~ George Augustus Henry Sala
Laurels quotes by George Augustus Henry Sala
I have been accused of being a very simplistic, very lyrical player, and that's okay. That just comes from the blues, which is my background. But every day you wake up and transcend. You can't ever rest on your laurels. ~ Carlos Santana
Laurels quotes by Carlos Santana
The popular scientific books by our scientists aren't the outcome of hard work, but are written when they are resting on their laurels. ~ Ludwig Wittgenstein
Laurels quotes by Ludwig Wittgenstein
I have sometimes dreamt ... that when the Day of Judgment dawns and the great conquerors and lawyers and statesmen come to receive their rewards
their crowns, their laurels, their names carved indelibly upon imperishable marble
the Almighty will turn to Peter and will say, not without a certain envy when He sees us coming with our books under our arms, Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them here. They have loved reading. ~ Virginia Woolf
Laurels quotes by Virginia Woolf
The property adjoined the bay, and when the tide came in it was possible to go kayaking, which some of the residents not yet disabled by their infirmities were happy to do. This is how I would like to live, thought Irina, taking deep breaths of the sweet aroma of pines and laurels. ~ Isabel Allende
Laurels quotes by Isabel Allende
He'd been back for about two weeks, and everything in Laurel's life had been thrown into Chaos. Sexy, sexy chaos. ~ Aprilynne Pike
Laurels quotes by Aprilynne Pike
I'm not very good at resting on my laurels. I am a bit of a workaholic, and I like to keep busy and active, so I think that's what drives me. ~ Tricia Helfer
Laurels quotes by Tricia Helfer
As far as I'm concerned, Miss Kenton, my vocation will not be fulfilled until I have done all I can to see his lordship through the great tasks he has set himself. The day his lordship's work is complete, the day he is able to rest on his laurels, content in the knowledge that he has done all anyone could ever reasonably ask of him, only on that day, Miss Kenton, will I be able to call myself, as you put it, a well-contented man. ~ Kazuo Ishiguro
Laurels quotes by Kazuo Ishiguro
I have a talent for silence and brevity. I can keep silent when it seems best to do so, and when I speak I can, and do usually, quit when I am done. This talent, or these two talents, I have cultivated. Silence and concise, brief speaking have got me some laurels, and, I suspect, lost me some. No odds. Do what is natural to you, and you are sure to get all the recognition you are entitled to. ~ Rutherford B. Hayes
Laurels quotes by Rutherford B. Hayes
But at the same time you can't assume that making a difference 20 years ago is going to allow you to sort of live on the laurels of those victories for the rest of your life. ~ Angela Davis
Laurels quotes by Angela Davis
It is wonderful how soon a piano gets into a log-hut on the frontier. You would think they found it under a pine-stump. With it comes a Latin grammar, and one of those tow-head boys has written a hymn on Sunday. Now let colleges, now let senates take heed! for here is one who, opening these fine tastes on the basis of the pioneer's iron constitution, will gather all their laurels in his strong hands. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Laurels quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Never look back, except for an occasional glance, look ahead and plan for the future. Success is not built on past laurels, but rather on a continuous activity. Keep busy searching out new ideas and, experimentally, keep ahead of the times, or at least up with them. ~ Dorothy Draper
Laurels quotes by Dorothy Draper
Cover them over with beautiful flowers, Deck them with garlands, those brothers of ours, Lying so silent by night and by day Sleeping the years of their manhood away. Give them the meed they have won in the past; Give them the honors their future forcast; Give them the chaplets they won in the strife; Give them the laurels they lost with their life. ~ Will Carleton
Laurels quotes by Will Carleton
You must be conquerors through him who hath loved you, if conquerors at all. Our laurels must grow among his olives in Gethsemane. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Laurels quotes by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
I consider myself lucky that Sheila Johnson, the cofounder of Black Entertainment Television, didn't choose to rest on her very impressive business laurels. Her luscious 100 percent modal scarves, printed with photos she takes all over the world, are gorgeous. Wearing one is like being wrapped in a hug. ~ Gayle King
Laurels quotes by Gayle King
John D. MacDonald is by any standards a better writer than Saul Bellow, only MacDonald writes thrillers and Bellow is a human-heart chap, so guess who wears the top-grade laurels? ~ Kingsley Amis
Laurels quotes by Kingsley Amis
I'm always trying to improve my skills as an actor. I think it shows in 'El Gringo;' it shows in the new 'Universal Soldier.' You can't rest on your laurels; you've got to keep improving. ~ Scott Adkins
Laurels quotes by Scott Adkins
You win the lasting laurels with your laughter. ~ Joni Mitchell
Laurels quotes by Joni Mitchell
I want to give the audience the whole package, and for me, the whole package is to give them something fresh as well. It's not as much fun resting on your laurels. ~ Al Jarreau
Laurels quotes by Al Jarreau
Know'st thou the land where the lemon-trees bloom, Where the gold orange glows in the deep thicket's gloom, Where a wind ever soft from the blue heaven blows, And the groves are of laurel and myrtle and rose! ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Laurels quotes by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Angel and Muse approach from without; the Angel sheds light and the Muse gives form (Hesiod learned of them). Gold leaf or chiton-folds: the poet finds his models in his laurel coppice. But the Duende, on the other hand, must come to life in the nethermost recesses of the blood. ~ Federico Garcia Lorca
Laurels quotes by Federico Garcia Lorca
People who have known a person for many days but could never spot or appreciate his hidden talent in the first place, are likely to raise their suspicions on seeing him ever winning laurels in the life's race. ~ Anuj
Laurels quotes by Anuj
All my laurels you have riven away, and my roses; yet in spite of you, there is one crown I bear away with me ... One thing without stain, unspotted from the world, in spite of doom mine own! And that is ... my white plume. ~ Edmond Rostand
Laurels quotes by Edmond Rostand
When the warrior returns, from the battle afar,To the home and the country he nobly defended,O! warm be the welcome to gladden his ear,And loud be the joy that his perils are ended:In the full tide of song let his fame roll along,To the feast-flowing board let us gratefully throng,Where, mixed with the olive, the laurel shall wave,And form a bright wreath for the brows of the brave. ~ Francis Scott Key
Laurels quotes by Francis Scott Key
As entrepreneurs, we must continue to ask ourselves 'What's next?' It takes humility to realize that we don't know everything, not to rest on our laurels and know that we must keep learning and observing. ~ Cher Wang
Laurels quotes by Cher Wang
Oh roses for the flush of youth, And laurel for the perfect prime; But pluck an ivy branch for me Grown old before my time. ~ Christina Rossetti
Laurels quotes by Christina Rossetti
If you want to conquer conceit, do not desire praise, laurels, nice garments, respect, favor, but like to be blamed and slandered by people ... ~ Vladimir Aleksandrovich Antonov
Laurels quotes by Vladimir Aleksandrovich Antonov
Platonic England, house of solitudes,
rests in its laurels and its injured stone ~ Geoffrey Hill
Laurels quotes by Geoffrey Hill
I'm always trying to do stuff I haven't done before or challenge myself so I'm not resting on my laurels all of the time because if I just found my little niche and never left it, I'd be pretty boring, I think. ~ Zooey Deschanel
Laurels quotes by Zooey Deschanel
We need to look to our laurels a bit with television in this country. I don't think enough risks are being taken in drama television in the U.K., and I think a lot of programme makers are underestimating the intelligence of the viewing public, basing it all on ratings. ~ Charles Dance
Laurels quotes by Charles Dance
There's a lot of guys that just get comfortable with their positions and rest on their laurels. I had to earn my way. ~ Paul Walker
Laurels quotes by Paul Walker
The next thing I wrote was in a writing class at night school. It was about a poor woman who worked at a dime store and who was all alone for Christmas in Laurel, Mississippi. ~ Beth Henley
Laurels quotes by Beth Henley
[Fringe] was just about doing the job, or trying to do the job, properly. It was never a job that you could rest on your laurels. It was a very challenging 43 minutes of television that we were shooting, every week. ~ John Noble
Laurels quotes by John Noble
I want to have sex with you" he told her back. "Touch you until you squirm with pleasure."
Laurel's head shot around. "What did you say?"
Oh, shit. He had never actually verified how much or how little Laurel could hear. ~ Erin McCarthy
Laurels quotes by Erin McCarthy
He gave her a quick, casual kiss on the cheek first. Then came the hug, and it was the hug that always made Laurel's heart mush. Serious grip, cheek to the hair, eyes closed, just a little sway. Del's hugs mattered, she thought, and made him impossible to resist. ~ Nora Roberts
Laurels quotes by Nora Roberts
Our cheer goes back to them, the valiant dead! Laurels and roses on their graves to-day, lilies and laurels over them we lay, and violets o'er each unforgotten head. ~ Richard Hovey
Laurels quotes by Richard Hovey
I'll never rest on my laurels. If I've got more than one Laurel in my bed, rest is not how I plan on utilizing my mattress. ~ Jarod Kintz
Laurels quotes by Jarod Kintz
I kind of feel like I have grown as just like a human being as a human being by being able to adapt and adjust and know that like you can't ever rest on your laurels, you have to sort of wake up; you actually have to be present. ~ Nicole Beharie
Laurels quotes by Nicole Beharie
The laurels of victory are at the point of the enemy bayonets. They must be plucked there ; they must be carried by a hand-to-hand fight if one really means to conquer. ~ Ferdinand Foch
Laurels quotes by Ferdinand Foch
You can't rest on your laurels. You have to continue to innovate; you have to continue to be different. ~ Keith Belling
Laurels quotes by Keith Belling
With racing, you never rest on your laurels, and there are no counterfeits. ~ Julie Krone
Laurels quotes by Julie Krone
Knowledge can be heady stuff, but it easily leads to an excess of zeal!
to illusions of grandeur and a desire to impress others and achieve eminence ... Our search for knowledge should be ceaseless, which means that it is open-ended, never resting on laurels, degrees, or past achievements. ~ Hugh Nibley
Laurels quotes by Hugh Nibley
Forcing modern speakers of English to not - whoops, not to split an infinitive because it isn't done in Latin makes about as much sense as forcing modern residents of England to wear laurels and togas. ~ Steven Pinker
Laurels quotes by Steven Pinker
People who refuse to rest honorably on their laurels when they reach retirement age seem very admirable to me. ~ Helen Hayes
Laurels quotes by Helen Hayes
Yield, ye arms, to the toga; to civic praise, ye laurels. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Laurels quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
There's that talent thing where I can score goals, and there's also that want and ambition to keep doing it and doing it and doing it. I've seen a lot of players do it for a year and then they rest on their laurels, but I've been very driven throughout my career. Without being the most talented, I think I've tried to make the most of it. ~ Frank Lampard
Laurels quotes by Frank Lampard
Alas, if our children lose the crown of life, it will be but a small consolation that they have won the laurels of literature or art. ~ Charles Spurgeon
Laurels quotes by Charles Spurgeon
If you wish to collect complimentary material for a record of yourself, never appeal to your relations. They may be proud of you as an asset to the family name, but they have a gift for remembering your gawky period privately, the follies and faults you committed and have forgotten. You may have come up in the world with a laurel on your brow, but if you go back home forty years later wearing two laurels on your brow, and a noble expression, they will miss the point. ~ Corra May Harris
Laurels quotes by Corra May Harris
When you rest on your laurels is right when you have the risk. It exists for every company, no matter how big. ~ David Sze
Laurels quotes by David Sze
From Vergil's Tenth Eclogue

Verses 1-26.

Published by Rossetti, "Complete Poetical Works of P. B. S.", 1870, from the Boscombe manuscripts now in the Bodleian. Mr. Locock ("Examination", etc., 1903, pages 47-50), as the result of his collation of the same manuscripts, gives a revised and expanded version which we print below.
Melodious Arethusa, o'er my verse
Shed thou once more the spirit of thy stream:
Who denies verse to Gallus? So, when thou
Glidest beneath the green and purple gleam
Of Syracusan waters, mayst thou flow
Unmingled with the bitter Doric dew!
Begin, and, whilst the goats are browsing now
The soft leaves, in our way let us pursue
The melancholy loves of Gallus. List!
We sing not to the dead: the wild woods knew
His sufferings, and their echoes...
Young Naiads,...in what far woodlands wild
Wandered ye when unworthy love possessed
Your Gallus? Not where Pindus is up-piled,
Nor where Parnassus' sacred mount, nor where
Aonian Aganippe expands...
The laurels and the myrtle-copses dim.
The pine-encircled mountain, Maenalus,
The cold crags of Lycaeus, weep for him;
And Sylvan, crowned with rustic coronals,
Came shaking in his speed the budding wands
And heavy lilies which he bore: we knew
Pan the Arcadian.

...

'What madness is this, Gallus? Thy heart's care
With willing steps pursues another there ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley
Laurels quotes by Percy Bysshe Shelley
We just keep making the shows that we love, and the good news is that we can never rest on our laurels, knowing that we're going to be on forever. We're constantly challenged to write the very best story that we can, week in and week out, hoping that that will allow us to keep telling more of them. ~ Jeff Pinkner
Laurels quotes by Jeff Pinkner
When I get some budding young comic who'll come up to me and say, 'What was it like to do it in those days?' I try to be as gracious to him as Stan Laurel was to me. ~ Dick Van Dyke
Laurels quotes by Dick Van Dyke
Cut is the branch that might have grown full straight,
And burnèd is Apollo's laurel-bough,
That sometime grew within this learnèd man. ~ Christopher Marlowe
Laurels quotes by Christopher Marlowe
It's about doing things that you haven't done before, where you're still kind of a beginner, and not resting on your laurels. ~ Caterina Fake
Laurels quotes by Caterina Fake
Yes I have done it all. Tested the shallow waters, swam through the dangerous tides, met strangers, seen friends turn strangers, taken risks to achieve my goals, persevered to out do myself each time, rose high, fell hard, learned to climb, learned to dream and in dreaming learned to relate to reality.
I have earned respect, achieved things very young, believed in my potential, questioned it too but through it all I have never stopped to aspire. I am a human and I must adapt to the changing seasons, learn new skills and master them all.
Now as I stand and look up, I see a heap of laurels yet to achieve and chest of mysteries yet to resolve. I am not one in the crowd. I'll forever be the one whom they could never be ~ Adhish Mazumder
Laurels quotes by Adhish Mazumder
L am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground. So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind: Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned With lilies and with laurel they go; but I am not resigned. ~ Edna St. Vincent Millay
Laurels quotes by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Challenge is the opportunity for greatness. People do their best when there is an opportunity to change how things currently stand. Maintaining the status quo facilitates mediocrity. Those who embrace this practice do not wish to rest on their laurels. They motivate others to exceed their limits and look for innovative ways to improve the organization. ~ James M. Kouzes
Laurels quotes by James M. Kouzes
I've never been the type of person to stick with the same thing or be complacent or rest on my laurels. ~ Chris Jericho
Laurels quotes by Chris Jericho
A good end cannot sanctify evil means, nor must we ever do evil that good may come of it. ~ Nancy Kress
Laurels quotes by Nancy Kress
Dr. Johnson has said that the chief glory of a country arises from its authors. But then that is only as they are oracles of wisdom; unless they teach virtue, they are more worthy of a halter than of the laurel. ~ Jane Porter
Laurels quotes by Jane Porter
A lot of people like to live on laurels that happened 20 or 30 years ago, but it's nice to get awards. It's nice to be labeled and things like that, but I'm not sure everybody qualifies. ~ Tim Conway
Laurels quotes by Tim Conway
What forests of laurel we bring, and the tears of mankind, to those who stood firm against the opinion of their contemporaries! ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Laurels quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Laurels grow in the Bay of Biscay, I hope a bed of them may be found in the Mediterranean. ~ Horatio Nelson
Laurels quotes by Horatio Nelson
He said you were on the scene when that Laurel Canyon homicide went down."
"I'm lucky that way," I said.
"So are you two square again?"
I halted, mid-ripping open the cookies, and stared at him. "Well, he's pretty square," I said. "I'm just a rectangular guy." With latent triangular tendencies. ~ Josh Lanyon
Laurels quotes by Josh Lanyon
I refuse to sit on my laurels. ~ Patricia Cornwell
Laurels quotes by Patricia Cornwell
You never sit on your laurels. It is always a case of trying to work on your deficiencies as much as working on your strengths. ~ Brian O'Driscoll
Laurels quotes by Brian O'Driscoll
Isn't it true that when some couple celebrates their tenth or fifteenth anniversary they seem far from triumphant? In fact they seem duped while dirty Uncle Harry, the rake, seems to wear the laurels. ~ John Cheever
Laurels quotes by John Cheever
