We arrived and we thought, 'This is our time. This is our generation. We have a responsibility.' " @garyjkemp of Spandau Ballet in "Mad World: An Oral History of the New Wave Artists and Songs That Defined the 1980s ~ Lori Majewski
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Lori Majewski
Michael [Hutchence] is hands down one of the greatest frontmen in music. The style, the voice - all of it. Any way that I was ever influenced by him really comes down to small, pale imitations compared to the real thing. There is a fearlessness about him. Watching him at Wembley Stadium with 70,000 people, he looks as comfortable as if he were in his own living room. ~ Lori Majewski
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Lori Majewski
Why do most people take the shortest route to settle their differences and just walk off, break up and go separate ways instead of trying to talk and work things out? ~ Jonathan Anthony Burkett
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Anthony Burkett
In 1969 the Khmer Rouge numbered only about 4,000. By 1975 their numbers were enough to defeat the government forces. Their victory was greatly helped by the American attack on Cambodia, which was carried out as an extension of the Vietnam War. In 1970 a military coup led by Lon Nol, possibly with American support, overthrew the government of Prince Sihanouk, and American and South Vietnamese troops entered Cambodia.

One estimate is that 600,000 people, nearly 10 per cent of the Cambodian population, were killed in this extension of the war. Another estimate puts the deaths from the American bombing at 1000,000 peasants. From 1972 to 1973, the quantity of bombs dropped on Cambodia was well over three times that dropped on Japan in the Second World War.

The decision to bomb was taken by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger and was originally justified on the grounds that North Vietnamese bases had been set up in Cambodia. The intention (according to a later defence by Kissinger's aide, Peter W. Rodman) was to target only places with few Cambodians: 'From the Joint Chiefs' memorandum of April 9, 1969, the White House selected as targets only six base areas minimally populated by civilians. The target areas were given the codenames BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER, SUPPER, SNACK, and DESSERT; the overall programme was given the name MENU.' Rodman makes the point that SUPPER, for instance, had troop concentrations, anti-aircraft, artillery, rocket and mortar positions, ~ Jonathan Glover
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Glover
You could fill an airlift to Africa with all the food generated by one dead Jew. ~ Jonathan Tropper
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Tropper
Once I had asked, 'But are you a Democrat or a Republican?" and Jonathan said, "I'm socially progressive but fiscally conservative," and Doug Miles, a football player who also came to Sunday breakfast but only ever read the sports section and ignored everyone, lifted his head and said, "Is that like being bisexual?" Which I actually thought was funny, even though I was pretty sure Doug was a jerk. ~ Curtis Sittenfeld
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Curtis Sittenfeld
Thus the young ladies are as much ashamed of being cowards and fools as the men, and despise all personal ornaments, beyond decency and cleanliness: neither did I perceive any difference in their education made by their difference of sex, only that the exercises of the females were not altogether so robust; and ~ Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Swift
Another view is Western companies chartered in societies that believe in this kind of censorship shouldn't be carrying water for societies that do. ~ Jonathan Zittrain
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Zittrain
I've always liked people who know me to like me, because I think I'm quite likeable. But people who make up their minds based on the image in the papers or a voice on a pop record? They're idiots. ~ Jonathan King
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan King
Everyone thinks they have strict limits," she said, "until they cross them. ~ Jonathan Franzen
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Franzen
Only in fiction are the great evils committed by caricatures of malevolence: Darth Vader, Lord Voldemort, Sauron or the Joker. In real history the great evils are committed by people seeking to restore a romanticised golden age, willing to sacrifice their lives and the lives of others in what they regard as a great and even holy cause. In some cases they see themselves as 'doing God's work'. They 'seem happy'. That is how dreams of utopia turn into nightmares of hell. ~ Jonathan Sacks
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Sacks
Stupidity mistook itself for intelligence, whereas intelligence knew its own stupidity. ~ Jonathan Franzen
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Franzen
I didn't want to hear about death. It was all anyone talked about, even when no one was actually talking about it. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
His jabber had a glottal, chanted quality, seemingly designed to guide you past the territory where you might wish to tell him to shut up already or even to strike him, into a realm of baffled wonderment as you considered the white noise of a nerd's id in full song. ~ Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Lethem
It shouldn't be the consumer's responsibility to figure out what's cruel and what's kind, what's environmentally destructive and what's sustainable. Cruel and destructive food products should be illegal. We don't need the option of buying children's toys made with lead paint, or aerosols with chlorofluorocarbons, or medicines with unlabeled side effects. And we don't need the option of buying factory-farmed animals. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
I'ts how I want to remember him, the way he was that night: with horrors up ahead and horrors at our back, and Lockwood standing in between them, calm and unafraid. ~ Jonathan Stroud
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Stroud
Reading is, at its best, not an escape; it is genuine experience. A novel is not a monologue, but a conversation, a collaboration between writer and reader, an invaluable exchange of human conditions. ~ Jonathan Evison
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Evison
Runnin's not a bad thing, sir, so long as you're runnin' towards somethin' good. ~ Jonathan Auxier
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Auxier
In the months and years after 9/11 it appeared likewise as if things had returned to some state of normalcy. As time passed, as the initial shock wore off and the trauma lessened, there was a growing temptation to go on almost as if it had never happened, as if the nation were still somehow immune to destruction. So it was in the last days of ancient Israel. But it was all an illusion." There was a long silence after that ... broken only by the sound of the seagulls. Then he continued as if there had been no break. "It was all a fatal illusion. So then ... what of America? ~ Jonathan Cahn
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Cahn
Despite their authoritarian light show, those ice-cream trucks of death couldn't do any more for Perkus's murdered infatuation, his crushed crush, than could keening Greek chorus, or a moaning witch doctor. ~ Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Lethem
Values are tapes we play on the Walkman of the mind: any tune we choose so long as it does not disturb others. ~ Jonathan Sacks
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Sacks
The universe will always remove what is no longer serving you. ~ Gabrielle Bernstein
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Gabrielle Bernstein
Those who know New York City primarily through tourism or mass culture may think of us natives as possessing certain shared characteristics, not all of them flattering. But the true, volatile charisma of New York lies in how balkanised it is. ~ Jonathan Dee
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Dee
There is a sense of violation in learning that, unbeknownst to me, my mind has maintained such a strong connection with the town, as if my brain's been sneaking around behind my back. ~ Jonathan Tropper
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Tropper
I'm not interested in current events per se, but I am interested in how certain aspects of social or public life that might seem ultra-contemporary actually take their place in a long American continuum. ~ Jonathan Dee
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Dee
When a smoker says he wants to quit but can't, what he's really saying is, "I want to quit but I want even more not to suffer the agony of withdrawal." To argue otherwise is to jettison any lingering notion of personal responsibility. ~ Jonathan Franzen
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Franzen
My belief is that you live your life by example, and not by a caption on a magazine! ~ Jonathan Knight
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Knight
I tend to think of myself as a highly emotional writer. It's all coming out of the deepest feelings, out of dreams, out of the unconscious. ~ Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Lethem
Goal we've always had for design at Apple is to create solutions that are inevitable. ~ Jonathan Ive
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Ive
It was not the Jew, of course, who invented the love poem, but the other way around. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
Brutes find out where their talents lie; a bear will not attempt to fly. ~ Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Swift
The dangling of promotions, the promise of raises and bonuses, chair massages, and yoga classes, all can elicit a general sense of compliance, more or less. We still reach goals. We get hard work - which is not the same as great work. But these tactics don't give you what you really want. What you want is a feeling - the same feeling that every leader who has ever lived craves: "They've got this. I can relax." Why don't any of these tactics get us to that place? It's because they all have something in common. Can you see it? It's that they all start with the needs of the business, and put the needs of the individuals second, usually a distant second. This ~ Jonathan Raymond
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Raymond
Sadness and joy aren't opposites of each other. They are each the opposite of indifference. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
exemplified the dull rigidity of Singapore's old colonial fantasies about itself. ~ Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Lethem
I've never particularly liked bankers. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Safran Foer
People who live on continents get into the habit of regarding the ocean as journey's end, the full stop at the end of the trek. For people who live on islands, the sea is always the beginning. It's the ferry to the mainland, the escape route from the boredom and narrowness of home. ~ Jonathan Raban
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Raban
So, to summarise: Science is the search for explanation. Religion is the search for meaning. Meaning is not accidental to the human condition because we are the meaning-seeking animal. To believe on the basis of science that the universe has no meaning is to confuse two disciplines of thought: explanation and interpretation. The search for meaning, though it begins with science, must go beyond it. Science does not yield meanings, nor does it prove the absence of meanings. The meaning of a system lies outside the system. Therefore the meaning of the universe lies outside the universe. The belief in a God who transcends the universe was the discovery of Abrahamic monotheism, which transformed the human condition, endowing it with meaning and thereby rescuing it from tragedy in the name of hope. For if God created the physical universe, then God is free, and if God made us in his image, we are free. If we are free, then history is not a matter of eternal recurrences. Because we can change ourselves, we can change the world. That is the religious basis of hope. There are cultures that do not share these beliefs. They are, ultimately, tragic cultures, for whatever shape they give the powers they name, those powers are fundamentally indifferent to human fate. They may be natural forces. They may be human institutions: the empire, the state, the political system, or the economy. They may be human collectivities: the tribe, the nation, the race. But all end in tragedy because none at ~ Jonathan Sacks
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Sacks
Here are a few patterns you may have seen that indicate the person you're managing is avoiding their next step of growth: covering up or attempting to brush off the severity of a mistake; hoarding data; embedding themselves as a go-to person (aka: bottleneck) by creating a system or process that only they know how to use; resorting to quick fixes instead of asking questions and looking for root causes; asking for more time or resources beyond what was agreed on in order to complete a project, instead of coming to you to talk about what went wrong so you can work together to improve it; letting tension build with a teammate or between departments instead of coming to you for advice on how to handle it. When ~ Jonathan Raymond
Jonathan Bernstein quotes by Jonathan Raymond
What you don't hear from these GOP candidates is that they really can't go after this president on domestic production of oil and gas. He's actually done quite a lot. In fact, I would suspect they're environmentalists who are worried that we're doing too much drilling and fracking, in fact. I know that for a fact. ~ Jared Bernstein
