What can you conceive more silly and extravagant than to suppose a man racking his brains, and studying night and day how to fly? ~ William Law
Jokinen Law quotes by William Law
Perfection does not consist in any singular state or condition of life, or in any particular set of duties, but in holy and religious conduct of ourselves in every state of Life. ~ William Law
Jokinen Law quotes by William Law
Law in origin was merely a codification of the power of dominant groups, and did not aim at anything that to a modern man would appear to be justice ~ Bertrand Russell
Jokinen Law quotes by Bertrand Russell
The first priority of humankind in this era is to establish an effective system of world law that will assure peace with justice among the peoples of the world. ~ Walter Cronkite
Jokinen Law quotes by Walter Cronkite
Do we scream in the night when it touches our dreams? No. We don't dream about it because we don't think about it; we don't think about it because we don't care about it. We are much more interested in law and order, so that American streets may be made safe while we transform those of (Iraq) into flowing sewers of blood which we replenish each year by forcing our sons to choose between a prison cell here or a coffin there. 'Every time I look at the flag, my eyes fill with tears.' Mine too. ~ Dalton Trumbo
Jokinen Law quotes by Dalton Trumbo
But they can rule by fraud, and by fraud eventually acquire access to the tools they need to finish the job of killing off the Constitution.'
'What sort of tools?'
'More stringent security measures. Universal electronic surveillance. No-knock laws. Stop and frisk laws. Government inspection of first-class mail. Automatic fingerprinting, photographing, blood tests, and urinalysis of any person arrested before he is charged with a crime. A law making it unlawful to resist even unlawful arrest. Laws establishing detention camps for potential subversives. Gun control laws. Restrictions on travel. The assassinations, you see, establish the need for such laws in the public mind. Instead of realizing that there is a conspiracy, conducted by a handful of men, the people reason - or are manipulated into reasoning - that the entire population must have its freedom restricted in order to protect the leaders. The people agree that they themselves can't be trusted. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Jokinen Law quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
Congress displayed contempt for the city's residents, yet it retained a fondness for buildings and parks. In 1900, the centennial of the federal government's move to Washington, many congressmen expressed frustration that the proud nation did not have a capital to rival London, Paris, and Berlin. The following year, Senator James McMillan of Michigan, chairman of the Senate District Committee, recruited architects Daniel Burnham and Charles McKim, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to propose a park system. The team, thereafter known as the McMillan Commission, emerged with a bold proposal in the City Beautiful tradition, based on the White City of Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition. Their plan reaffirmed L'Enfant's avenues as the best guide for the city's growth and emphasized the majesty of government by calling for symmetrical compositions of horizontal, neoclassical buildings of marble and white granite sitting amid wide lawns and reflecting pools. Eventually, the plan resulted in the remaking of the Mall as an open lawn, the construction of the Lincoln Memorial and Memorial Bridge across the Potomac, and the building of Burnham's Union Station. Commissioned in 1903, when the state of the art in automobiles and airplanes was represented by the curved-dash Olds and the Wright Flyer, the station served as a vast and gorgeous granite monument to rail transportation. ~ Zachary M. Schrag
Jokinen Law quotes by Zachary M. Schrag
A license to practice law is not a license to violate it. ~ Loretta Lynch
Jokinen Law quotes by Loretta Lynch
Thought is born of failure. ~ Lancelot Law Whyte
Jokinen Law quotes by Lancelot Law Whyte
We are what we think." How many times do you think of positive things? Have you ever given thought to the type of thoughts you have? There is much more to your thoughts than being merely ideas because they have a lot of power in them. The actions that we indulge in are a direct outcome of the thoughts that we think. This is why you need to control your thoughts. Do not let them wander because if your thoughts are lost, you might end up being trapped too. There is a huge science behind the logic of how our thoughts shape who we are and this science is summed in the Law of Attraction. ~ Nathan Powers
Jokinen Law quotes by Nathan Powers
I believe the family is the foundation of America
and that we must fight to protect and strengthen it. I believe in the sanctity of human life. I believe that people and their elected representatives should make our laws, not unelected judges. ~ Mitt Romney
Jokinen Law quotes by Mitt Romney
My toils in the quotation field have led me to formulate two or three laws about the way people use and abuse quotations. My first law is: When in doubt, ascribe all quotations to Bernard Shaw - which I don't mean to be taken literally, but as a general observation of the habit people have of attaching remarks to the nearest obvious speaker. Churchill, Wilde, Orson Welles and Alexander Woollcott are other useful figures upon whom to father remarks when you don't know who really said them. ~ Nigel Rees
Jokinen Law quotes by Nigel Rees
My sister-in-law could win an award for figurative ball size. ~ Renee Carlino
Jokinen Law quotes by Renee Carlino
Poverty is not something people impose on themselves for want of effort and community organisation. It is constructed by divisive and discriminatory laws, inflexible organisations, acquisitive ideologies of wealth, a deeply rooted class system and policies which serve privilege in the short term and destroy society in the long term. ~ Pete Townshend
Jokinen Law quotes by Pete Townshend
An excess of law inescapably weakens the rule of law. ~ Laurence Tribe
Jokinen Law quotes by Laurence Tribe
The fact is, real life is long on law and short on grace - the ~ Tullian Tchividjian
Jokinen Law quotes by Tullian Tchividjian
I grew up in Chicago, but when I was 12, I came to New York because I was doing an episode of 'Law & Order.' ~ Keke Palmer
Jokinen Law quotes by Keke Palmer
The contempt for law and the contempt for the human consequences of lawbreaking go from the bottom to the top of American society. ~ Margaret Mead
Jokinen Law quotes by Margaret Mead
In private matters everyone is equal before the law. In public matters, when it is a question of putting power and responsibility into the hands of one man rather than another, what counts is not rank or money, but the ability to do the job well. ~ Pericles
Jokinen Law quotes by Pericles
The angel we named God banned representations of himself, even the writing of his name, trying to halt the process of literalization - but in the end it became inevitable. The angel found himself at the head of a corporation, run by Young Turks who wouldn't respect the line management structure: They rewrote his memos to make the law more rigorous, more confined, more human. He got ousted in a boardroom coup and kicked upstairs. He hadn't realized the power of corporeality, that the minds of men would of necessity alter the mind of their God. Being a deity meant taking on a lot of your subjects' qualities - both profound and trivial. ~ Michael Marshall Smith
Jokinen Law quotes by Michael Marshall Smith
Memory, with its fugitive adjustments, is the merciful veil to the grim enactments of the first law. It hides the anguish in the human heart which is always craving for perpetuity. ~ Stacy Aumonier
Jokinen Law quotes by Stacy Aumonier
Government is the thing. Law is the thing. Not brotherhood, not international cooperation, not security councils that can stop war only by waging it ... Where does security lie, anyway - security against the thief, a bad man, the murderer? In brotherly love? Not at all. It lies in government. ~ E.B. White
Jokinen Law quotes by E.B. White
Now to consult the rules of composition before making a picture is a little like consulting the law of gravitation before going for a walk. Such rules and laws are deduced from the accomplished fact; they are the products of reflection. ~ Edward Weston
Jokinen Law quotes by Edward Weston
Every thing useful and beneficial to man, seems to be connected with obedience to the laws of his nature, the inclinations, the duties, and the happiness of individuals, resolve themselves into customs and habits, favorable, in the highest degree, to society. In no case is this more apparent, than in the customs of nations respecting marriage. ~ Samuel Williams
Jokinen Law quotes by Samuel Williams
Our most merciful Father, seeing us to be oppressed and overwhelmed with the curse of the law ... sent his only Son into the world and laid upon him all the sins of all men, saying, 'You be Peter that denier, Paul that persecutor, blasphemer and cruel oppressor, David that adulterer, that sinner who ate the apple in Paradise, that thief who hung upon the cross, and briefly, you be the person who has committed the sins of all men. See therefore that you pay and satisfy for them.' ~ Martin Luther
Jokinen Law quotes by Martin Luther
Reporters called down every other profession - medicine, law, politics - for failing to meet a level of professional responsibility which they would allow no one to enforce on themselves, and which they themselves would too rarely enforce on their own. Do as I say, not as I do was something you couldn't say to a six-year-old, but it had become a ready cant for grown-ups. And if it got any worse, then what? ~ Tom Clancy
Jokinen Law quotes by Tom Clancy
I threw my whole life and lived my life in a certain way to make sure that I would never violate any law.. certainly never any criminal laws.. and always maintained that most important to me was my integrity, was my character, were my values. ~ Kenneth Lay
Jokinen Law quotes by Kenneth Lay
I know some say, let us have good laws, and no matter for the men that execute them: but let them consider, that though good laws do well, good men do better: for good laws may want good men, and be abolished or evaded [invaded in Franklin's print] by ill men; but good men will never want good laws, nor suffer ill ones. ~ Patrick Henry
Jokinen Law quotes by Patrick Henry
Anna Arkadyevna read and understood, but it was distasteful to her to read, that is, to follow the reflection of other people's lives. She had too great a desire to live herself. If she read that the heroine of the novel was nursing a sick man, she longed to move with noiseless steps about the room of a sick man; if she read of a member of Parliament making a speech, she longed to be delivering the speech; if she read of how Lady Mary had ridden after the hounds, and had provoked her sister-in-law, and had surprised everyone by her boldness, she too wished to be doing the same. But there was no chance of doing anything; and twisting the smooth paper knife in her little hands, she forced herself to read. ~ Leo Tolstoy
Jokinen Law quotes by Leo Tolstoy
The very concept of law that protects us from tyranny has been lost. No longer the people's shield, law has become a weapon in the hands of government. ~ Paul Craig Roberts
Jokinen Law quotes by Paul Craig Roberts
I figured my wife was about to start law school. If that whole baseball pitching thing didn't work out, I had something to fall back on. I figure I'd put a ring on her finger. Turns out she was the smart one. Turns out she was the gold digger, not me. ~ Tim Hudson
Jokinen Law quotes by Tim Hudson
Dharma (cosmic law) aims at the happiness of all creatures. ~ Paramahansa Yogananda
Jokinen Law quotes by Paramahansa Yogananda
Law will take over because law always carries with it a sense of security and manipulative power. ~ Richard J. Foster
