Despite the prominence that "magic bullets" and "wonder drugs" hold in the layman's mind, most of the really decisive battles in the war against infectious disease consisted of measures to eliminate disease organisms from the environment. An example from history concerns the great outbreak of cholera in London more than one hundred years ago. A London physician, John Snow, mapped occurrence of cases and found they originated in one area, all of whose inhabitants drew their water from one pump located on Broad Street. In a swift and decisive practice of preventative medicine, Dr. Snow removed the handle from the pump. The epidemic was thereby brought under control - not by a magic pill that killed the (then unknown) organism of cholera, but by eliminating the organism from the environment. ~ Rachel Carson
John Snow quotes by Rachel Carson
M'lord," Janos Slynt reminded him. "You'll address me-"
"I'll go, my lord. But you are making a mistake, my lord. You are sending the wrong man, my lord. Just the sight of me is going to anger Mance ... ~ George R R Martin
John Snow quotes by George R R Martin
It wasn't until my teenage years that a book really left a mark, and that was George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.' It was on the syllabus at school when I was about 16, and I went on to read more of his books. It was the height of the Cold War, so a lot of the messages really resonated at the time. ~ John Niven
John Snow quotes by John Niven
A society which makes provision for participation in its good of all its members on equal terms and which secures flexible readjustment of its institutions through interaction of the different forms of associated life is in so far democratic. Such a society must have a type of education which gives individuals a personal interest in social relationships and control, and the habits of mind which secure social changes without introducing disorder. ~ John Dewey
John Snow quotes by John Dewey
An actor's life is like a series of - it's like the first day of school happening over and over again. ~ John C. Reilly
John Snow quotes by John C. Reilly
If you think you are capable of living without writing, do not write, ~ John Irving
John Snow quotes by John Irving
Too often, our minds are locked on one track. We are looking for red - so we overlook blue. Many Nobel Prizes have been washed down the drain because someone did not expect the unexpected. ~ John Turner
John Snow quotes by John Turner
There is more virtue in one sin to destroy, than in all thy righteousness to save thee alive. ~ John Bunyan
John Snow quotes by John Bunyan
I'm not sure I want to sound like a candidate. I just want to sound like an American who's trying to make this country a heck of a lot stronger, not a (typical) politician ... but somebody that's going to go in, do the job, not pay attention to all the special interest groups, change the status quo, shift power out of Washington and get America on the track again with strength in our military as well. ~ John Kasich
John Snow quotes by John Kasich
It is my hope that by reducing the tax burden on small business owners that we can help them grow their businesses and, in doing so, create jobs. ~ John Liu
John Snow quotes by John Liu
John accepted Livia's exuberant hug. "Yup, all right. Better get up there and get married already. Time to let Blake have the pleasure of your nagging for the rest of his days," he said. ~ Debra Anastasia
John Snow quotes by Debra Anastasia
If we do not become changed from the inside-out - if we don't morph - we will be tempted to find external methods to satisfy our need to feel that we're different from those outside the faith. If we cannot be transformed, we will settle for being informed or conformed. ~ John Ortberg
John Snow quotes by John Ortberg
Every good piece of art ... involves first essentially the evidence of human skill, and the formation of an actually beautiful thing by it. ~ John Ruskin
John Snow quotes by John Ruskin
I don't think anyone takes the deaths in Midsomer as seriously as in say Wire In The Blood or Silent Witness. We're part of the old British 'whodunnit'. We're much more gentle and the deaths are sanitised, in a sense. ~ John Nettles
John Snow quotes by John Nettles
Love is like sounds, whose last reverberations / Hang on the leaves of strange trees, on mountains / As distant as the curving of the earth, / Where the snow hangs still in the middle of the air.
-from Love is Like Sounds ~ Donald Hall
John Snow quotes by Donald Hall
A working class hero is something to be. ~ John Lennon
John Snow quotes by John Lennon
So is the savage buffalo, especially delighting in dark places, where he can wallow in the mud and slake his thirst without much trouble; and here also we find the wild pig. ~ John Hanning Speke
John Snow quotes by John Hanning Speke
My dad served in two wars has been flying airplanes for 60 years now. He was certainly quite an inspiration. ~ John L. Phillips
John Snow quotes by John L. Phillips
All things being equal, attitude wins. All things not being equal, attitude sometimes still wins. ~ John C. Maxwell
John Snow quotes by John C. Maxwell
We gentlemen, whose chariot's roll only upon the four aces, are apt to have a wheel out of order. ~ John Vanbrugh
John Snow quotes by John Vanbrugh
I know few Christians so convinced of the splendor of the rooms in their Father's house, as to be happier when their friends are called to those mansions ... Nor has the Church's ardent "desire to depart, and be with Christ," ever cured it of the singular habit of putting on mourning for every person summoned to such departure. ~ John Ruskin
John Snow quotes by John Ruskin
Aparrently, life is not a wish-granting factory. - Augustus Waters ~ John Green
John Snow quotes by John Green
On the back part of the step, toward the right, I saw a small iridescent sphere of almost unbearable brilliance. At first I thought it was revolving; then I realised that this movement was an illusion created by the dizzying world it bounded. The Aleph's diameter was probably little more than an inch, but all space was there, actual and undiminished. Each thing (a mirror's face, let us say) was infinite things, since I distinctly saw it from every angle of the universe. I saw the teeming sea; I saw daybreak and nightfall; I saw the multitudes of America; I saw a silvery cobweb in the center of a black pyramid; I saw a splintered labyrinth (it was London); I saw, close up, unending eyes watching themselves in me as in a mirror; I saw all the mirrors on earth and none of them reflected me; I saw in a backyard of Soler Street the same tiles that thirty years before I'd seen in the entrance of a house in Fray Bentos; I saw bunches of grapes, snow, tobacco, lodes of metal, steam; I saw convex equatorial deserts and each one of their grains of sand; I saw a woman in Inverness whom I shall never forget; I saw her tangled hair, her tall figure, I saw the cancer in her breast; I saw a ring of baked mud in a sidewalk, where before there had been a tree; I saw a summer house in Adrogué and a copy of the first English translation of Pliny -- Philemon Holland's -- and all at the same time saw each letter on each page (as a boy, I used to marvel that the letters in a closed book did not ge ~ Jorge Luis Borges
John Snow quotes by Jorge Luis Borges
Friendship in marriage is its own thing: friendship in a cup of tea, or a glass of wine, or a cappuccino every Sunday morning. Friendship in buying undershirts and underpants. Friendship in picking up a prescription or rescuing the towed car. Friendship in waiting for the phone call after the mammogram. Friendship in toast buttered just so. Friendship in shoveling the snow. I am the one you want to tell. You are the one I want to tell. ~ Elizabeth Alexander
John Snow quotes by Elizabeth Alexander
What it really was like to live a life determined by the struggle to be free, as desert dwellers' days are determined by the struggle against thirst and those of dwellers amid snow and ice by the struggle against the numbing of cold. ~ Nadine Gordimer
John Snow quotes by Nadine Gordimer
A man ought to avow his opinions and defend them with boldness. ~ John Adams
John Snow quotes by John Adams
Education is the leading of human souls to what is best, and making what is best out of them. ~ John Ruskin
John Snow quotes by John Ruskin
Vietnam was as much a laboratory experiment as a war. ~ John Pilger
John Snow quotes by John Pilger
Cindi didn't care for the Snow Girls, and they pretty much couldn't stand her, either. Ergo, her chances of being included for the Wednesday night soiree in Resort City were just about zero. ~ Lee DeBourg
John Snow quotes by Lee DeBourg
When God calls you to an extraordinary task, He provides extraordinary resources.. ~ John Wimber
John Snow quotes by John Wimber
That is the supreme value of history. The study of it is the best guarantee against repeating it. ~ John Buchan
John Snow quotes by John Buchan
No commander was ever privileged to lead a finer force; no commander ever derived greater inspiration from the performance of his troops. ~ John J. Pershing
John Snow quotes by John J. Pershing
Is it really necessary to reward the CEO with several million dollars? Why isn't it logical or common sense to pay the minimum-wage employee another quarter, give a quarterly fifty-dollar bonus, or even provide a two-hundred-dollar gas gift card? ~ John-Talmage Mathis
John Snow quotes by John-Talmage Mathis
When it is winter and we must walk in the blizzard snow do not our fingers and toes whisper death And when winter is at last over ... can we not hear our bellies whisper death to us In the dark don't we know And when we are paralyzed by nightmares We know what you are. With our first cries we rail against you. We see you in every drop of blood in every tear. ~ Martine Leavitt
John Snow quotes by Martine Leavitt
Sin eventually destroys my capacity even for enjoyment, let alone meaning. It distorts my perceptions, alienates my relationships, inflames my desires, and enslaves my will. ~ John Ortberg
John Snow quotes by John Ortberg
Who, of men, can tell
That flowers would bloom, or that green fruit would swell
To melting pulp, that fish would have bright mail,
The earth its dower of river, wood, and vale,
The meadows runnels, runnels pebble-stones,
The seed its harvest, or the lute its tones,
Tones ravishment, or ravishment its sweet,
If human souls did never kiss and greet? ~ John Keats
John Snow quotes by John Keats
On speaking: first, have something to say; second, say it; third, stop when you have said it; and finally give it an accurate title. ~ John Shaw Billings
John Snow quotes by John Shaw Billings
The hard soil and four months of snow make the inhabitants of the northern temperate zone wiser and abler than his fellow who enjoys the fixed smile of the tropics. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
John Snow quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson
If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here." (Exodus 33:15) As a reminder, where was here? It was the place of lack, adversity, stress, and hardship - the desert. Moses gave a reply that's perplexing, even mind-boggling, to the average person. In essence he declared, "If I have to choose between Your presence and Your blessing, I'll take Your presence - even if it's in a place of lack and hardship - over Your blessing in a great environment." Was Moses delusional? Had the desert sun distorted his sense of judgment? No. His internal GPS was set on what was best. It was directing him to make the best choice even when God was offering him a good choice, one that common sense and uncomfortable circumstances would have dictated he accept. ~ John Bevere
John Snow quotes by John Bevere
'Tis true that governments cannot be supported without great charge, and it is fit everyone who enjoys a share of protection should pay out of his estate his proportion of the maintenance of it. ~ John Locke
John Snow quotes by John Locke
rain, I don't mind ~ John Lennon
John Snow quotes by John Lennon
The other thing I like, in fact, several months ago I introduced a bill to end the absurd catch and release policy where our government has been giving tickets, essentially, to people who enter illegally and then letting them go and show up of their own volition. ~ John Doolittle
John Snow quotes by John Doolittle
Outside the school's walls the Swinging Sixties are in full cry, but inside them the band of Empire plays on. Twice-daily chapel services praise the school's war dead to the detriment of its living, value the white man above lesser breeds, and preach chastity to boys who can find sexual stimulation in a Times editorial. ~ John Le Carre
John Snow quotes by John Le Carre
