God is the greatest mystery. And when you believe in something, no matter how grand, no matter how invincible, you are willing to do anything, however preposterous, tosee it to its solution. ~ Rachel McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Rachel McMillan
If you jump to conclusions, you make terrible landings. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Don't worry about how pretty (the story) sounds, how lilting it is, and the imagery, and the metaphor, all that. Most readers don't care. It's the people in your book that matter. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Beneath black makeup, the skin around her eyes wrinkled like satin sheets after a restless night. ~ Mike Reeves-McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Mike Reeves-McMillan
Being a lifetime wife and mother has afforded me the luxury of having multiple and even simultaneous careers: I've been a chauffeur. A chef. An interior decorator. A landscape architect, as well as a gardener. I've been a painter. A furniture restorer. A personal shopper. A veterinarian's assistant and sometimes the veterinarian. I've been an accountant, a banker and on occasion, a broker. I've been a beautician. A map. A psychic. Santa Claus. The Tooth Fairy. The T.V. Guide. A movie reviewer. An angel. God. A nurse and a nursemaid. A psychiatrist and psychologist. Evangelist. For a long time I have felt like I inadvertently got my master's in How To Take Care of Everybody Except Yourself and then a Ph.D. in How to Pretend Like You Don't Mind. But I do mind. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Being a dick is when you're so self-centered, you think your ideas are pretty much the only worthy ones, and you secretly believe other people are inferior to you. [ ... ] You'd rather believe other people just can't handle how awesome you are. And you're right. All that awesomeness sucks, actually. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
Parents can ruin children, and sometimes that's a learned behavior. Sometimes you can't blame your parents for it, sometimes you can. I think to me, that's what the whole paradox is, is people that have children that don't even know how to raise them. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
We do not share much in the U.S. culture of individualism except our delusions about meritocracy. God help my people, but I can talk to hundreds of black folks who have been systematically separated from their money, citizenship, and personhood and hear at least eighty stories about how no one is to blame but themselves. That is not about black people being black but about people being American. That is what we do. ~ Tressie McMillan Cottom
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tressie McMillan Cottom
I sit on my bed and think about Nader McMillan and wonder what I'm going to do. Ignore him. Stand up to him. Avoid him. Be "tough." I think of the stuff Dad has said over the years. How he finally gave up suggesting things. Why are you asking me this? I never figured out what to do about my own bullies. How am I supposed to know what to do with yours? ~ A.S. King
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by A.S. King
I think of 'crazy' as what happens when we love the other person more than we love ourselves. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
...I had also parsed that there was something powerful about blindness, thinness, flatness, and gaps between thighs. And that power was the context against which all others defined themselves... beauty isn't actually what you look like; beauty is the preference that reproduce the existing social order. ~ Tressie McMillan Cottom
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tressie McMillan Cottom
The Grace Hotel in Sukhumvit had been a magnet for tarts, double-bent cops, single-trippers, sub-orbital space cadets and those spring-necked noddies who spent their waking hours peering into the dark side of the spoon. ~ David McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by David McMillan
the toilet is an intimacy
only shared with parents when you are young
and once again when they are older
and with lovers when say on a Sunday
morning stretching into the bathroom
you wake to the sound of stream into bowl
and go to hug the naked body
stood with its back to you and kiss the neck
and taste the whole of the night on there
and smell the morning's pale yellow loss
and take the whole of him in your hand
and feel the water moving through him
and knowing that this is love the prone flesh
what we expel from the body and what we let inside ~ Andrew McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Andrew McMillan
I was, for some reason, born knowing how to get married. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
Being all about me is not a good thing - I don't care what 1978 tried to say - because as long as you mostly think about yourself, you're not going to be a wonderful person. You're just not. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
I would be content being a housewife if I could find the kind of man who wouldn't treat me like one. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Now, I've been known to be attractive on special occasions, and I do my best to project as much beauty as I can muster from deep inside, though I often fail. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Holy hell! Bryan "Mac" McMillan kissed her. Then grinned. And then winked. ~ Julie Ann Walker
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Julie Ann Walker
I'm the only one who can stop me.. I'm the one who's been sitting at the stoplight all these years, waiting for the light to turn green. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
It's amazing how we can make ourselves believe what we want to. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
When relationships don't work out, it doesn't mean you're a bad person, it just means you weren't meant to be together. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
You know, one of my fears about living alone so long is that you get used to doing everything your own way. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
I've got tons of irreplaceable information inside the soul of this computer. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
The best rush in the world is getting something at 80 percent off. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
When people talk about for-profit colleges, they often do so with a lot of disdain. If traditional colleges that take in a fraction of willing students every year annoy you, then you might be disdainful of their "prestige cartel." If you are concerned about vulnerable people making expensive educational decisions with little education, then you might disdain the "predatory" for-profit schools. If you think that a strong work ethic can trump all manner of troubles, you might disdain the "weak" people who go to a "predatory" school. What is interesting to me is how much disdain is spread among students and schools and how little disdain there is for labor markets. ~ Tressie McMillan Cottom
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tressie McMillan Cottom
When Friedrich Nietzsche mocked Immanuel Kant for having "discovered a moral faculty in man", he inadvertently resolved Kant's dilemma of being unable to identify what exactly constituted his "moral law" for fear of offending against a charge of empiricism from the likes of David Hume. ~ Joseph B.H. McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Joseph B.H. McMillan
I think that by telling the truth and by attempting to be a good citizen, somehow I've ended up playing with fire. And that's really scary. ~ Cecily McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Cecily McMillan
I pray for my sister. That she be allowed to discover grace and find peace without drugs. That her hair grows. That some of her pain be driven from her and given to me because I think I can handle it. I pray for her kids. That they find they have a chance to grow up knowing they were loved. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
As far as young kids go, my primary interest is to get parents to read to their kids. That's about the most you can do, I think. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
My stories are character driven. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
As a writer, you get to bring attention to something without preaching. I don't believe in being didactic. So if you dramatize something, you automatically bring attention to it if people read it. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
A sure-fire way to know you're crazy is if more than one person has told you you'd be great on a reality show - and you agree with them. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
Enkeli shrugged. He was a well-practiced shrugger, and his gesture bore enough casual unconcern for others' problems to supply an entire elite academy. ~ Mike Reeves-McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Mike Reeves-McMillan
The principle of freedom is the fundamental principle of morality and the objective of justice. ~ Joseph B.H. McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Joseph B.H. McMillan
Somehow, married or single, we'd rather anesthetize ourselves with love substitutes than go for the real thing, because let's face it: The real thing is pretty scary. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
I hope one day I can come into a training camp and not say someone is out for the season. ~ Nate McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Nate McMillan
Work is a different type of pursuit than relationships. You can't take the skills that you know that have gotten you into that great school or into that great job and apply them to your relationships. ~ Tracy McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Tracy McMillan
You promised me you would never cheat on me, that you'd love me forever and we would never get a divorce." "I still love you, and I hate that I cheated on you, and I wish we'd never gotten divorced. ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
And you can drop the uninterested shtick right now, Mr. McMillan." That sounded a little like Marilyn Monroe saying Mr. President, didn't it? Yes, it did. And, booyah! "I know you want to. ~ Julie Ann Walker
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Julie Ann Walker
They're bored with their boring husbands who are workaholics like my dad. They're bored with their boring lives, sick of us kids and all this puberty and rebelling, so they pop pills all day long and shop and watch the soaps, and then when it all starts to fall apart they realize they just want to be happy again, so they go to rehab to clean up their act and then start fresh. Can you relate? ~ Terry McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Terry McMillan
Congress displayed contempt for the city's residents, yet it retained a fondness for buildings and parks. In 1900, the centennial of the federal government's move to Washington, many congressmen expressed frustration that the proud nation did not have a capital to rival London, Paris, and Berlin. The following year, Senator James McMillan of Michigan, chairman of the Senate District Committee, recruited architects Daniel Burnham and Charles McKim, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to propose a park system. The team, thereafter known as the McMillan Commission, emerged with a bold proposal in the City Beautiful tradition, based on the White City of Chicago's 1893 Columbian Exposition. Their plan reaffirmed L'Enfant's avenues as the best guide for the city's growth and emphasized the majesty of government by calling for symmetrical compositions of horizontal, neoclassical buildings of marble and white granite sitting amid wide lawns and reflecting pools. Eventually, the plan resulted in the remaking of the Mall as an open lawn, the construction of the Lincoln Memorial and Memorial Bridge across the Potomac, and the building of Burnham's Union Station. Commissioned in 1903, when the state of the art in automobiles and airplanes was represented by the curved-dash Olds and the Wright Flyer, the station served as a vast and gorgeous granite monument to rail transportation. ~ Zachary M. Schrag
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Zachary M. Schrag
please, love, leave,
like leaf from tree;
taking beauty,
leaving seed ~ Andrew McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Andrew McMillan
My town was all-white and shut down Section 8 housing because they didn't want black people to move into the town. And I thought that was wrong - duh. ~ Cecily McMillan
Jeanice Mcmillan quotes by Cecily McMillan
I'd crack up without my music. It's the best company you can have, really. It don't say 'no' or 'maybe,' or ask no questions. ~ Terry McMillan
