My father had played cornet, although I never saw him play it. I found his mouthpiece when I was a kid. I used to buzz it. And my mother played piano and sang in the church choir for different functions. So there was always music in the house, jazz, gospel, or whatever. Especially jazz records. ~ Johnny Griffin
Jazz Records quotes by Johnny Griffin
The "Highway 61" album [of Bob Dylan] was produced by Bob Johnston if I'm not incorrect. And Bob Johnston was an entirely different producer than Tom Wilson. Tom Wilson had produced jazz records and was a Harvard educated. ~ Al Kooper
Jazz Records quotes by Al Kooper
People think it is all about country music, and I know a lot of country music has come out of there, but like Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dillon was recorded there. A lot of great records; R&B records, jazz records. It's a lot of great players and great studios. ~ Elvis Costello
Jazz Records quotes by Elvis Costello
Reading was like an addiction; I read while I ate, on the train, in bed until late at night, in school, where I'd keep the book hidden so I could read during class. Before long I bought a small stereo and spent all my time in my room, listening to jazz records. But I had almost no desire to talk to anyone about the experience I gained through books and music. I felt happy just being me and no one else. In that sense I could be called a stack-up loner. ~ Haruki Murakami
Jazz Records quotes by Haruki Murakami
I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini. ~ Paul Desmond
Jazz Records quotes by Paul Desmond
I loved music. Music was a big thing and so I started collecting records. I had a large collection of jazz records and that was something else I used to listen to. At night, there was a - what the heck was his name? There was a famous - Jazzbo Collins, I used to listen to at night, and some other guys. ~ Robert Barry
Jazz Records quotes by Robert Barry
There's so much around, you don't know what to listen to. All I've got at home is Bo Diddley, some Stones and Beatles stuff, and old jazz records. ~ Syd Barrett
Jazz Records quotes by Syd Barrett
I have tons of jazz records: John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis. I could go on and on. ~ Ted King
Jazz Records quotes by Ted King
I was 16 years old, and I was just flailing around, looking for an interest. I heard, you know, these jazz records. They were modern records, at the time in the '50s, and I realized that I didn't fully get what was going on. But I liked a lot of what I heard. ~ Harvey Pekar
Jazz Records quotes by Harvey Pekar
There are a lot of records coming out, in every field of music, not just jazz. ~ Herbie Hancock
Jazz Records quotes by Herbie Hancock
I've been dancing my entire life. Jazz, hip hop, ballet. And then there's tap dancing. I love to tap. ~ Emily VanCamp
Jazz Records quotes by Emily VanCamp
A lot of the people that I photograph are master musicians themselves, whether they're singers or great jazz players and it's kind of fun to figure out who they came up with and who they emulated or who they idolized actually. ~ Carol Friedman
Jazz Records quotes by Carol Friedman
I'm very proud of my records, but my most natural creative tendencies have been in live performing. There's a beautiful element to recording and making records, but I've always felt a little shy with it. ~ Langhorne Slim
Jazz Records quotes by Langhorne Slim
With this record [The Colour and the Shape], I started taking the lyrics more seriously. This is a very personal album. ~ Dave Grohl
Jazz Records quotes by Dave Grohl
he knew from studying maps in preparation: the broad avenues leading to the Brandenburg Gate. He had played Bach's Brandenburg Concertos records many times, intricate magic alive in the air. The gate that led to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel. ~ Gregory Benford
Jazz Records quotes by Gregory Benford
In my mother's church, everybody read the Bible and it was mostly about music. My mother had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in my life. She could sing anything - classical, jazz, blues, opera. And people came from long distances to that little church she went to - African Methodist Episcopal, the AME church she belonged to - just hear her. ~ Toni Morrison
Jazz Records quotes by Toni Morrison
These record companies are going to be going out of business pretty soon, because people are just going to be downloading what they want to hear. ~ Lester Bowie
Jazz Records quotes by Lester Bowie
Language as a Prison

The Philippines did have a written language before the Spanish colonists arrived, contrary to what many of those colonists subsequently claimed. However, it was a language that some theorists believe was mainly used as a mnemonic device for epic poems. There was simply no need for a European-style written language in a decentralized land of small seaside fishing villages that were largely self-sufficient.

One theory regarding language is that it is primarily a useful tool born out of a need for control. In this theory written language was needed once top-down administration of small towns and villages came into being. Once there were bosses there arose a need for written language. The rise of the great metropolises of Ur and Babylon made a common written language an absolute necessity - but it was only a tool for the administrators. Administrators and rulers needed to keep records and know names - who had rented which plot of land, how many crops did they sell, how many fish did they catch, how many children do they have, how many water buffalo? More important, how much then do they owe me? In this account of the rise of written language, naming and accounting seem to be language's primary "civilizing" function. Language and number are also handy for keeping track of the movement of heavenly bodies, crop yields, and flood cycles. Naturally, a version of local oral languages was eventually translated into symbols as well, and nonadmi ~ David Byrne
Jazz Records quotes by David Byrne
Stop what?" Howie demanded. "Stop loving you, Jazz? I wish I could quit you, but I can't. Someday, we'll run off to New York and get married, the way God intended it." Despite himself, Jasper cracked a grin. "Sorry, man my nips only go out about this far." He mimed a quarter inch. "Oh, well, in that case, nice to know ya… ~ Barry Lyga
Jazz Records quotes by Barry Lyga
If you go back to the roots of jazz, it was all about COLLECTIVE improvisation. ~ Henry Threadgill
Jazz Records quotes by Henry Threadgill
Quite a few people still listen to vinyl records, use film cameras to take photographs, and look up phone numbers in the printed Yellow Pages. But the old technologies lose their economic and cultural force. They become progress's dead ends. It's the new technologies that govern production and consumption, that guide people's behavior and shape their perceptions. That's why the future of knowledge and culture no longer lies in books or newspapers or TV shows or radio programs or records or CDs. It lies in digital files shot through our universal medium at the speed of light. ~ Nicholas Carr
Jazz Records quotes by Nicholas Carr
Nothin very bad happen to me lately.
How you explain that? --I explain that, Mr
Bones,
terms o' your bafflin odd sobriety.
Sober as man can get, no girls, no telephones,
what could happen bad to Mr Bones?
--If life is a handkerchief sandwich,

in a modesty of death I join my father
who dared so long agone leave me.
A bullet on a concrete stoop
close by a smothering southern sea
spreadeagled on an island, by my knee.
--You is from hunger, Mr Bones,

I offers you this handkerchief, now set
your left foot by my right foot,
shoulder to shoulder, all that jazz,
arm in arm, by the beautiful sea,
hum a little, Mr Bones.
--I saw nobody coming, so I went instead. ~ John Berryman
Jazz Records quotes by John Berryman
In a conversation with the master jazz musician and Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Wynton Marsalis, he told me, "You need to have some restrictions in jazz. Anyone can improvise with no restrictions, but that's not jazz. Jazz always has some restrictions. Otherwise it might sound like noise." The ability to improvise, he said, comes from fundamental knowledge, and this knowledge "limits the choices you can make and will make ~ Sheena Iyengar
Jazz Records quotes by Sheena Iyengar
They still have negligent auditing, they still have things going for a walk, and they have no idea where they're coming from and they have no idea where they're going. And if that's the case, how can we as the public trust the NSA with all of our information, with all of our private records, the permanent record of our lives? ~ Edward Snowden
Jazz Records quotes by Edward Snowden
The 'cleverness' syndrome has taken the place of melody. It's like everyone has come down with this terrible disease in jazz ... you are always expected to do your own material, which is a strange thing to do if you're a poor composer but a great player. ~ Keith Jarrett
Jazz Records quotes by Keith Jarrett
Rock star. The words are so full of smoke and mirrors that it's impossible to find a real person behind them. But I am a rock star. I have the bank account of a rock star and the platinum records of a rock star and the girlfriend of a rock star. But I fucking hate that term, and hearing Mia pin it on me ups the level of my loathing to a new stratosphere. ~ Gayle Forman
Jazz Records quotes by Gayle Forman
A writer observes. A writer records for posterity. The moments in the transience of the labyrinth of time that would go unrecorded otherwise! A writer records for value. A writer records for sentimentalism. A writer tries in earnest to carry the emotions and sentiments that make us what we ultimately are. For what are we? Empty spaces in an atom! ~ Avijeet Das
Jazz Records quotes by Avijeet Das
I became a professional musician and played all kinds of music. I played bluegrass, I played classical music, and for many years, I played jazz. ~ Terry Teachout
Jazz Records quotes by Terry Teachout
I have records in gold, in platinum, I have two Oscars, I have Grammys and so on. ~ Celine Dion
Jazz Records quotes by Celine Dion
To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history? ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero
Jazz Records quotes by Marcus Tullius Cicero
I love the road. That's always been my goal. I've said that to many record labels. I want to make records. The road is my favorite. Some people hate the road, I love the road. ~ Gary Allan
Jazz Records quotes by Gary Allan
I had to make a drastic change at Sun Records and I didn't really appreciate country music until I went there. ~ Charlie Rich
Jazz Records quotes by Charlie Rich
I'll always have a totally open mind to endless possibilities. I want to do a dance album. Not Techno, but a record that's exclusively designed for people to dance to. That whole dance genre is kinda into its own world. I'd just like to get in there and mess around with that. ~ Rob Halford
Jazz Records quotes by Rob Halford
In the process of making the record, I was just so bored all the time working whatever stupid job. I felt like a stagnant pond that has algae and mildew and weird animal cells, and I felt like if I sat around not doing anything long enough, that I'd probably end up going a little bit crazy. ~ Josh Jones
Jazz Records quotes by Josh Jones
I played in school jazz bands and tried to start rock bands, but nobody was interested. ~ Courtney Barnett
Jazz Records quotes by Courtney Barnett
The only time I made money was when I licensed my own solo guitar record, which sold maybe seven copies. ~ Sasha Frere-Jones
Jazz Records quotes by Sasha Frere-Jones
Perhaps our synagogues, our temples, and our churches," Archbishop Tutu added, "are not as welcoming as they should be. I really think that we do need for these fellowships to do a great deal more to have those who are lonely come and share. Not in an aggressive way, or in order, as it were, to increase their records or their ranks, but really just keenly interested in one person who comes and gets what they did not have before--warmth and fellowship. ... ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Jazz Records quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
I think that any artistic decision that is based on whether or not you are going to make money it is not really an artistic decision. It is a business decision. And there are a lot of things that I can do to earn a living and a lot of things that I have already done to earn a living which produce the amount of capital needed to do this project. I came here to spend money on an English orchestra and record my music, so I can take it home and I can listen to it. And... if somebody else likes that kind of stuff, I will make it available on a record so that they can hear it. That is my part of the public service of spending the money to make this event happen. No foundation grant, no government assistance, no corporation, no comittee. Just a crazy guy who spent the money to hire English musicians to do a concert at the Barbican and make an album for Barking Pumpkin Records. ~ Frank Zappa
Jazz Records quotes by Frank Zappa
I've always loved music, and I've always sought out the stranger things, even in a record you could buy at the mall. ~ Grant Evans
Jazz Records quotes by Grant Evans
I would love to do a biopic of a famous singer, like Diana Ross or Donna Summer, or an old jazz story that we haven't seen before. I would love to do that! I would love to play Diana Ross 'cause she's an icon. I'm salivating to do that. ~ Taraji P. Henson
Jazz Records quotes by Taraji P. Henson
Consider a future device for individual use, which is a sort of mechanized private file and library. It needs a name, and, to coin one at random, 'memex' will do. A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory. ~ Vannevar Bush
Jazz Records quotes by Vannevar Bush
I have a little dictaphone and if a sound takes my fancy or if a lyric comes to me in the middle of the night I'll just record it there and then. ~ Barry Gibb
Jazz Records quotes by Barry Gibb
If memories were indeed like what a camera records, they could be forgotten, or they could fade so that they are no longer clear and vivid. But it would be difficult to explain how people could have memories that are both clear and vivid while also being wrong. Yet that happens, and it is not infrequent. ~ Leonard Mlodinow
Jazz Records quotes by Leonard Mlodinow
When I'm working behind a camera, I feel like I'm trying to achieve something like a jazz musician does. ~ Jack Welpott
Jazz Records quotes by Jack Welpott
Miles got a mystique about him-plus he's at the top of his profession. And he's got way, way, way more money. ~ Dizzy Gillespie
Jazz Records quotes by Dizzy Gillespie
I didn't really grow up on hip-hop. Ella Fitzgerald and the old school jazz divas are more my comfort zone. ~ Gugu Mbatha-Raw
