In retrospect, each of the steps toward this abyss seemed irrevocable, and yet they had all been so small! ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
But now the shots began - not many, but one shot is a fusillade if there have been no shots before. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
The omelette tasted like flannel. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
[T]he end cannot justify the means; but if there are no other means, and the end is necessary... ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
I for one refuse to believe that an enterprise so well conceived, so scrupulously produced, and so widely loved can stay boneyarded for long.
And I have 1,898 letters from people who don't believe it either. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
Now that I'm a free agent I mean to make my own choices, and explain them to nobody if that's what pleases me. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
James Blish told me I had the worst case of "said bookism" (that is, using every word except said to indicate dialogue). He told me to limit the verbs to said, replied, asked, and answered and only when absolutely necessary. ~ Anne McCaffrey
James Blish quotes by Anne McCaffrey
She was right. Peace was the way.
She was right. But at the wrong time. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
I will be the first. As of tonight, I renounce my citizenship in the United Nations, and my allegiance to the Shelter state. From now on I will be a citizen--a citizen of no country but that bounded by the limits of my own mind. I do not know what those limits are, and I may never find out, but I shall devote my life to searching for them, in whatever manner seems good to me, and in no other manner whatsoever.
You must do the same. Tear up your registration cards. If you are asked your serial number, tell them you never had one. Never fill in another form. Stay above ground when the siren sounds. Stake out plots; grow crops; abandon the corridors. Do not commit any violence; simply refuse to obey. Nobody has the. right to compel you, as non-citizens. Passivity is the key. Renounce, resist, deny! ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
True, most of the people he had known personally were pleasant people who were far from short either of money or good will -- people who would not hesitate to help someone in trouble if they could, or thought they could. By the same token, most of the fiction he had read had been about fantastically selfish, unwashed people without a grain of human kindness even toward themselves, who seemed to be distracted from prolonged acts of suicide only to strike out at the people around them. Between the two, he struck a rough sort of balance. ~ James Blish
James Blish quotes by James Blish
The critical sense is so far from frequent that it is absolutely rare, and the possession of the cluster of qualities that minister to it is one of the highest distinctions ... In this light one sees the critic as the real helper of the artist, a torchbearing outrider, the interpreter, the brother ... Just in proportion as he is sentient and restless, just in proportion as he reacts and reciprocates and penetrates, is the critic a valuable instrument. ~ Henry James
James Blish quotes by Henry James
How can a man be so brave and so stupid, so gentle and so cruel, so warming and so detestable
all at the same time? ~ James Clavell
James Blish quotes by James Clavell
Trusting your individual uniqueness challenges you to lay yourself open. ~ James Broughton
James Blish quotes by James Broughton
In prose fiction the freedom to work honestly exists, although you may have to fight for it. In those other areas of literature, I mean drama, there is only silence. That sort of aesthetic integrity does not exist in radio and television, and seldom on film. ~ James Kelman
James Blish quotes by James Kelman
What I do know is that with a celebrity's death comes an avalanche of media, and in that media is most often another death - it takes a life that is filled with complicated talent, hope, success and drive and reduces it to the 'story.' ~ James Belushi
James Blish quotes by James Belushi
As I've said, encountering death has a way of jerking your priorities into line. ~ James C. Dobson
James Blish quotes by James C. Dobson
My favorite forgotten President in American history is James Buchanan, who in defending really robust and sharp-elbowed debates said, "I like the noise of democracy. I like the sound of people in the streets making noise." ~ Jeff Sharlet
James Blish quotes by Jeff Sharlet
If we truly want to learn, we never learn when we are talking. We only learn when we are listening. ~ James Altucher
James Blish quotes by James Altucher
The male cannot bear very much humiliation; and he really cannot bear it, it obliterates him. ~ James A. Baldwin
James Blish quotes by James A. Baldwin
People who reported having a terrible traumatic experience and who kept the experience a secret had far more health problems than people who openly talked about their traumas. Why would keeping a secret be so toxic? More importantly, if you asked people to disclose emotionally powerful secrets, would their health improve? The answer, my students and I soon discovered, was yes.
We began running experiments where people were asked to write about traumatic experiences for fifteen to twenty minutes a day for three to four consecutive days. Compared to people who were told to write about nonemotional topics, those who wrote about trauma evidenced improved physical health. Later studies found that emotional writing boosted immune function, brought about drops in blood pressure, and reduced feelings of depression and elevated daily moods. Now, over twenty-five years after the first writing experiment, more than two hundred similar writing studies have been conducted all over the world. While the effects are often modest, the mere act of translating emotional upheavals into words is consistently associated with improvements in physical and mental health. ~ James W. Pennebaker
James Blish quotes by James W. Pennebaker
by a Scotch-Irish preacher, a Presbyterian named James Finley, in the year 1801, or before John Roebling was born. Finley had been a versatile and ingenious man. His "chain bridge" had a seventy-foot span, cost about six hundred dollars, and in the next ten years he built some forty more of them, including one over the Potomac above Washington. ~ David McCullough
James Blish quotes by David McCullough
Hello, James," Deven replied mildly. "Had any consensual sex lately? ~ Dianne Sylvan
James Blish quotes by Dianne Sylvan
How could anyone ever be happy in a life like this? he thought. Then, How could anyone be evil enough to do this to us? He understood more than ever the passion the Gladers felt for finding their way out of the Maze. It wasn't just a matter of escape. For the first time, he felt a hunger to get revenge on the people responsible for sending him there. ~ James Dashner
James Blish quotes by James Dashner
Life is as serious a thing as death. ~ Philip James Bailey
James Blish quotes by Philip James Bailey
A prudent silence will frequently be taken for wisdom and a sentence or two cautiously thrown in will sometimes gain the palm of knowledge, while a man well informed but indiscreet and unreserved will not uncommonly talk himself out of all consideration and weight. (Alexander Hamilton's 'thesis on discretion' written to his son James shortly before his fatal duel with Burr.) ~ Ron Chernow
James Blish quotes by Ron Chernow
Only a fadograph of a yestern scene. ~ James Joyce
James Blish quotes by James Joyce
Across from the famous jewelry store on Fifth Avenue at Fifty-Seventh Street, we sat in the back of a graffiti-covered white box truck watching the world go by on the surveillance vehicle's hidden high-def camera. So far there had been no sign of the thieves. Or even Audrey Hepburn. ~ James Patterson
James Blish quotes by James Patterson
The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. ~ James Kirk
James Blish quotes by James Kirk
Excarnation The process by which religion (and Christianity in particular) is dis-embodied and de-ritualized, turned into a belief system. ~ James K.A. Smith
James Blish quotes by James K.A. Smith
My mother certainly doesn't think I'm charming! ~ James Nesbitt
James Blish quotes by James Nesbitt
The satanic strategy of using lies to disguise, divide, and destroy. Let's focus on the middle word of Satan's plan to defeat you. The word is divide and his strategy is to get a wedge between you and men who can support God's work in your life through loving mutual community. As always he does this through lies. ~ James MacDonald
James Blish quotes by James MacDonald
All truth-seekers should study the genocide that was the Holocaust and ask themselves how on Earth this event was 'allowed' to occur, keeping in mind allowed is the correct term as there was no shortage of witnesses, including those all over Europe who stood by and did nothing to intervene. If those bystanders hadn't just stood by, perhaps the history books would tell a different story. ~ James Morcan
James Blish quotes by James Morcan
You never can tell about these mild-mannered boys. ~ James Carl Nelson
James Blish quotes by James Carl Nelson
Sometimes it seems difficult when life hurts you. "There is a darkness where there seems to be no hope just the feeling of being empty." "Just know there is so much more to life ."Just trust yourself, and you will know how to live. ~ James Hilton ( Cowboy)
James Blish quotes by James Hilton ( Cowboy)

Stars which stand as thick as dewdrops on the field of heaven. ~ Philip James Bailey
James Blish quotes by Philip James Bailey
The young man looked at her a moment. 'You are very much changed,' he said.
'I am glad to hear it,' Gertrude declared.
'I am not. I have known you a long time, and I have loved you as you were.'
'I am much obliged to you,' said Gertrude. 'I must be going home.'
He, on his side, gave a little laugh. 'You certainly do avoid me - you see!'
'Avoid me, then.' said the girl.
He looked at her again; and then, very gently, 'No, I will not avoid you,' he replied; 'but I will leave you, for the present, to yourself. I think you will remember - after a while - some of the things you have forgotten. I think you will come back to me; I have great faith in that.'
This time his voice was very touching; there was a strong reproachful force in what he said, and Gertrude could answer nothing. He turned away and stood there, leaning his elbows on the gate and looking at the beautiful sunset. Gertrude left him and took her way home again; but when she reached the middle of the next field she suddenly burst into tears. Her tears seemed to her to have been a long time gathering, and for some moments it was a kind of glee to shed them. But they presently passed away. There was something a little hard in Gertrude; and she never wept again. ~ Henry James
James Blish quotes by Henry James

James Blish quotes by James Anderson

James Blish quotes by James A. Garfield

James Blish quotes by E.L. James
It [sin] cannot occur at any time nor in any form without his permission. While he does not actively originate it, he holds such absolute control over it that no single event in connection with it can take place without his permission ~ James Petigru Boyce
James Blish quotes by James Petigru Boyce

James Blish quotes by James McAvoy

James Blish quotes by James P. Hogan
