But although realism does not add anything to the catalogue of entities or properties that a subjectivist believes to exist in the world, it does hold that certain truths that subjectivists think have to be grounded in something else do not have to be so grounded, but are just true in their own right. After all, whatever one's philosophical views, so long as there is such a thing as truth there must be some truths that don't have to be grounded in anything else. Disagreement over which truths these are defines some of the deepest fault lines of philosophy. To philosophers of an idealist persuasion it is self-evident that physical facts can't just be true in themselves, but must be explained in terms of actual or possible experience, just as it is self-evident to those of a materialist persuasion that mental facts can't just be true in themselves, but must be explained in terms of actual or possible behavior, functional organization, or physiology. The issue over moral realism is of the same kind. ~ Thomas Nagel
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Thomas Nagel
[M]ere knowledge of the truth will not give you the art of persuasion. ~ Plato
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Plato
The artist is the opposite of the politically minded individual, the opposite of the reformer, the opposite of the idealist. The artist does not tinker with the universe, he recreates it out of his own experience and understanding of life. ~ Henry Miller
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Henry Miller
The new, old, and constantly changing language of politics is a lexicon of conflict and drama?ridicule and reproach?pleading and persuasion. ~ William Safire
Idealist Persuasion quotes by William Safire
In fact I'm in too much of a mental muddle to know where I am - an idealist or not. I'm a mere man of letters, and I do what I can with those subjects. ~ Jorge Luis Borges
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Jorge Luis Borges
She is Living and I'm Dead, but I'd like to believe we're both human. Call me an idealist. ~ Isaac Marion
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Isaac Marion

Idealist Persuasion quotes by Thomas Jefferson
Three qualities of greatness stood out in Woodrow Wilson. He was a man of staunch morals. He was more than just an idealist; he was the personification of the heritage of idealism of the American people. He brought spiritual concepts to the peace table. He was a born crusader. ~ Herbert Hoover
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Herbert Hoover
Tell me what to do to change your mind. ~ Lisa Desrochers
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Lisa Desrochers
The Didots created happiness and power, or in this case, pain and sadness ... but only within its subject's mind.
The power it held was real, but it was not a physical power. It was the power of persuasion, the power of illusion.
Mr. Bradshaw was a genius. ~ Embee
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Embee
Presentations are the most amazing persuasion tool available in organizations today ~ Nancy Duarte
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Nancy Duarte
If I rule out violent anarchism, there remains pacifist, anti-nationalist, anti-capitalist, moral, and anti-democratic anarchism (i.e., that which is hostile to the falsified democracy of bourgeois states). There remains the anarchism which acts by means of persuasion, by the creation of small groups and networks, denouncing falsehood and oppression, aiming at a true overturning of authorities of all kinds as people at the bottom speak and organize themselves. ~ Jacques Ellul
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Jacques Ellul
It's just that you are practiced at persuading, and sometimes it's quite difficult, sir to distinguish being persuaded by you from being knocked down in street and stamped on.
Pg.406 ~ Hilary Mantel
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Hilary Mantel
Most people don't have the power of persuasion. ~ James Altucher
Idealist Persuasion quotes by James Altucher
I want to introduce you to Jay, a 'bus-conductor and an idealist. She is not the heroine, but the most constantly apparent woman in this book. I cannot introduce you to a heroine because I have never met one. ~ Stella Benson
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Stella Benson
It is well for us if we have learned to listen to the sweet persuasion of the Beatitudes, but there are crises in all lives which require also the emphatic "Thou shalt not" of the decalogue which the founders wrote on the gateposts of their commonwealth. ~ John Greenleaf Whittier
Idealist Persuasion quotes by John Greenleaf Whittier
Jesus, in fact, was typical of a certain kind of fanatical young idealist: at one moment holding forth, with tears in his eyes, about the need for universal love; at the next, furiously denouncing the morons, crooks and bigots who did not see eye to eye with him. It is very natural and very human behaviour. But it is not superhuman. ~ Margaret E. Knight
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Margaret E. Knight
Idealists , workers of thought, unite to show how inspiration and genius walk in step with the progress of the machine , of aircraft, of industry, of trade, of the sciences, of electricity. ~ Filippo Tommaso Marinetti
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti
Bismarck fought 'necessary' wars and killed thousands, the idealists of the twentieth century fight 'just' wars and kill millions. ~ A.J.P. Taylor
Idealist Persuasion quotes by A.J.P. Taylor
Too much zeal offends where indirection works. ~ Euripides
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Euripides
It is safe to assume that any individual or group you wish to influence has access to more wisdom than they currently use. It is also safe to assume that they also have considerably more facts than they can process effectively. Giving them even more facts adds to the wrong pile. They don't need more facts. They need help finding their wisdom. Contrary to popular belief, bad decisions are rarely made because people don't have all the facts. ~ Annette Simmons
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Annette Simmons
It was about as easy getting the Statue of Liberty to spread cunny, which did take some dynamite persuasion. ~ William T. Vollmann
Idealist Persuasion quotes by William T. Vollmann
If you would persuade, you must appeal to interest rather than intellect. ~ Benjamin Franklin
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Benjamin Franklin
Americans born since World War II have grown up in a media-saturated environment. From childhood, we have developed a sort of advertising literacy, which combines appreciation for technique with skepticism about motives. We respond to ads with at least as much rhetorical intelligence as we apply to any other form of persuasion. ~ Virginia Postrel
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Virginia Postrel
Persuasion is better than force. ~ Aesop
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Aesop
Wearing a cloak is on Rose's list of the thousand things she hates most. The problem is that each of the thousand problems is ranked number one.
'But Dr. Rannigan says you must and anyway, it hardly weighs a thing, it's so full of holes.' I swung mine round my shoulders. Rose hates any bit of clothing that constricts, but I say Chin up and bear it. Life is just one great constriction.
'Ventilated,' I said, 'that's the word. Our cloaks are terrifically ventilated. ~ Franny Billingsley
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Franny Billingsley
What happens when two people talk? That is really the basic question here, because, that's the basic context in which all persuasion takes place. ~ Malcolm Gladwell
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Malcolm Gladwell
My powers of persuasion are only as strong as the bullshit I have to back it up.
- Charley Davidson ~ Darynda Jones
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Darynda Jones
People in every country should be free to choose and live their faith based upon the persuasion of the mind, and the heart, and the soul. This tolerance is essential for religion to thrive. ~ Barack Obama
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Barack Obama
The talent of insinuation is more useful than that of persuasion, as everybody is open to insinuation, but scarce any to persuasion. ~ Lord Chesterfield
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Lord Chesterfield
You perceive the force of a word. He who wants to persuade should put his trust not in the right argument, but in the right word. The power of sound has always been greater than the power of sense ... Give me the right word and the right accent and I will move the world. ~ Joseph Conrad
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Joseph Conrad
The Ninysh might have resisted a bit harder. I don't mean to imply that they were cowards ... , Maurizio said shrugging, clearly implying that the Ninysh were cowards. ~ Rachel Hartman
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Rachel Hartman
Unless men may come to a reasonable, solid persuasion and conviction of the truth of the gospel, by the internal evidences of it, ... by a sight of its glory; it is impossible that those who are illiterate, and unacquainted with history, should have any thorough and effectual conviction of it at all. They may without this, see a great deal of probability of it; it may be reasonable for them to give much credit to what learned men and historians tell them ... But to have a conviction, so clear, and evident, and assuring, as to be sufficient to induce them, with boldness to sell all, confidently and fearlessly to run the venture of the loss of all things, and of enduring the most exquisite and long continued torments, and to trample the world under foot, and count all things but dung for Christ, the evidence they can have from history, cannot be sufficient. ~ Jonathan Edwards
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Jonathan Edwards
Rationalization is a dialogue with ourselves or with like-minded brains. Reasoning, on the other hand, is an honest and open conversation in which we try to persuade interlocutors who don't necessarily agree with us beforehand with arguments that are as universally valid, coherent, and detailed as possible, while opening ourselves to persuasion. ~ Alberto Cairo
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Alberto Cairo
Behold, I am become a reproach to thy holy name, by serving any ambition and the sins of others; which though I did by the persuasion of other men, yet my own conscience did cheek and upbraid me in it. ~ William Laud
Idealist Persuasion quotes by William Laud
basic rule of negotiation is to know what you want, what you need to walk away with in order to be whole. ~ Phil Knight
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Phil Knight
Everyone is selling something, if you can't see what people are selling, maybe you're the cart. ~ Aniekee Tochukwu Ezekiel
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Aniekee Tochukwu Ezekiel
Nothing was easier to shatter than the fragile shield of an idealist. ~ Kristin Hannah
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Kristin Hannah
Up until then it had only been himself. Up to then it had been a private wrestle between him and himself. Nobody else much entered into it. After the people came into it he was, of course, a different man. Everything had changed then and he was no longer the virgin, with the virgin's right to insist upon platonic love. Life, in time, takes every maidenhead, even if it has to dry it up; it does not matter how the owner wants to keep it. Up to then he had been the young idealist. But he could not stay there. Not after the other people entered into it. ~ James Jones
Idealist Persuasion quotes by James Jones
It was characteristic of the rise of the Nazi movement in Germany and of the Communist movements in Europe after 1930 that they recruited their members from this mass of apparently indifferent people whom all other parties had given up as too apathetic or too stupid for their attention. The result was that the majority of their membership consisted of people who never before had appeared on the political scene. This permitted the introduction of entirely new methods into political propaganda, and indifference to the arguments of political opponents; these movements not only placed themselves outside and against the party system as a whole, they found a membership that had never been reached, never been "spoiled" by the party system. Therefore they did not need to refute opposing arguments and consistently preferred methods which ended in death rather than persuasion, which spelled terror rather than conviction. They presented disagreements as invariably originating in deep natural, social, or psychological sources beyond the control of the individual and therefore beyond the power of reason. This would have been a shortcoming only if they had sincerely entered into competition with other parties; it was not if they were sure of dealing with people who had reason to be equally hostile to all parties. ~ Hannah Arendt
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Hannah Arendt
As a rule it will listen to neither a dull speaker nor a bright one. It refuses all persuasion. The dull speaker wearies it and sends it far away in idle dreams; the bright speaker throws out stimulating ideas which it goes chasing after and is at once unconscious of him and his talk. You cannot keep your mind from wandering, if it wants to; it is master, not you.
**About the mind ~ Mark Twain
Idealist Persuasion quotes by Mark Twain
A dash of humor will only add intense gravity to the proceedings, even as a flash of lightning only makes midnight dreariness all the more impressive. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
