Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
I was introduced to Mr. Davy, who has rooms adjoining mine (in the Royal Institution); he is a very agreeable and intelligent young man, and we have interesting conversation in an evening ... ~ John Dalton
Humphry Davy quotes by John Dalton
The three states of the caterpillar, larva, and butterfly have, since the time of the Greek poets, been applied to typify the human being,
its terrestrial form, apparent death, and ultimate celestial destination. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
James Watt was equally distinguished as a natural philosopher and chemist; his inventions demonstrate his profound knowledge of those sciences, and that peculiar characteristic of genius - the union of them for practical application. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Geology, perhaps more than any other department of natural philosophy, is a science of contemplation. It requires no experience or complicated apparatus, no minute processes upon the unknown processes of matter. It demands only an enquiring mind and senses alive to the facts almost everywhere presented in nature. And as it may be acquired without much difficulty, so it may be improved without much painful exertion. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Michael Faraday, the son of a Yorkshire blacksmith, was born in south London in 1791. He was self-educated, leaving school at fourteen to become an apprentice bookbinder. He engineered his own lucky break into the world of professional science after attending a lecture in London by the Cornish scientist Sir Humphry Davy in 1811. Faraday sent the notes he had taken at the lecture to Davy, who was so impressed by Faraday's diligent transcription that he appointed him his scientific assistant. Faraday went on to become a giant of nineteenth-century science, widely acknowledged to have been one of the greatest experimental physicists of all time. Davy is quoted as saying that Faraday was his greatest scientific discovery. ~ Brian Cox
Humphry Davy quotes by Brian Cox
Cavendish was a great Man with extraordinary singularities - His voice was squeaking his manner nervous He was afraid of strangers & seemed when embarrassed to articulate with difficulty - He wore the costume of our grandfathers. Was enormously rich but made no use of his wealth ... Cavendish lived latterly the life of a solitary, came to the Club dinner & to the Royal Society: but received nobody at his home. He was acute sagacious & profound & I think the most accomplished British Philosopher of his time. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
There may be beings, thinking beings, near or surrounding us, which we do not perceive, which we cannot imagine. We know very little; but, in my opinion, we know enough to hope for the immortality, the individual immortality, of the better part of man. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
And by the influence of heat, light, and electrical powers, there is a constant series of changes [in animal and vegetal substances]; matter assumes new forms, the destruction of one order of beings tends to the conservation of another, solution and consolidation, decay and renovation, are connected, and whilst the parts of the system, continue in a state of fluctuation and change, the order and harmony of the whole remain unalterable. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
I envy no quality of the mind or intellect in others; not genius, power, wit, nor fancy; but, if I could choose what would be most delightful, and, I believe, most useful to me, I should prefer a firm religious belief to every other blessing. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Nothing tends so much to the advancement of knowledge as the application of a new instrument. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Mr Humphry Davy is a lively and talented man, and a thorough chemist ... ~ Joseph Banks
Humphry Davy quotes by Joseph Banks
Experimental science hardly ever affords us more than approximations to the truth; and whenever many agents are concerned we are in great danger of being mistaken. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Cuvier had even in his address & manner the character of a superior Man, much general power & eloquence in conversation & great variety of information on scientific as well as popular subjects. I should say of him that he is the most distinguished man of talents I have ever known on the continent ... ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Gay-Lussac was quick, lively, ingenious and profound, with great activity of mind and great facility of manipulation. I should place him at the head of all the living chemists in France. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
But if the two countries or governments are at war, the men of science are not. That would, indeed be a civil war of the worst description: we should rather, through the instrumentality of the men of science soften the asperities of national hostility.

{Davy's remarks to Thomas Poole on accepting Napoleon's prize for the best experiment on Galvanism.} ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
If I am allowed to give a metaphorical allusion to the future state of the blessed, I should imagine it by the orange-grove in that sheltered glen on which the sun is now beginning to shine, and of which the trees are at the same time, loaded with sweet golden fruit and balmy silver flowers. Such objects may well portray a state in which hope and fruition become one eternal feeling. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Language is not only the vehicle of thought, it is a great and efficient instrument in thinking. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
The moment after, I began to respire 20 quarts of unmingled nitrous oxide. A thrilling, extending from the chest to the extremities, was almost immediately produced. I felt a sense of tangible extension highly pleasurable in every limb; my visible impressions were dazzling, and apparently magnified, I heard distinctly every sound in the room and was perfectly aware of my situation. By degrees, as the pleasurable sensations increased, I last all connection with external things; trains of vivid visible images rapidly passed through my mind, and were connected with words in such a manner, as to produce perceptions perfectly novel. I existed in a world of newly connected and newly modified ideas. I theorised - I imagined that I made discoveries. When I was awakened from this semi-delirious trance by Dr. Kinglake, who took the bag from my mouth, indignation and pride were the first feelings produced by the sight of the persons about me. My emotions were enthusiastic and sublime; and for a minute I walked round the room, perfectly regardless of what was said to me. As I recovered my former state of mind, I felt an inclination to communicate the discoveries I had made during the experiment. I endeavoured to recall the ideas, they were feeble and indistinct; one collection of terms, however, presented itself: and with the most intense belief and prophetic manner, I exclaimed to Dr Kinglake, 'Nothing exists but thoughts! - the universe is composed of impressions, ideas, pleasures and ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Nothing is so dangerous to the progress of the human mind than to assume that our views of science are ultimate, that there are no mysteries in nature, that our triumphs are complete and that there are no new worlds to conquer. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
The most important of my discoveries have been suggested to me by my failures. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
The wealth and prosperity of the country are only the comeliness of the body, the fullness of the flesh and fat; but the spirit is independent of them; it requires only muscle, bone and nerve for the true exercise of its functions. We cannot lose our liberty, because we cannot cease to think. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
The well-mannered man never puts out his hand in greeting until a lady extends hers. This is a test of good breeding that is constantly applied ... The first move in the direction of cordiality must come from the lady, the whole code of behaviour being based on the assumption that she is the social superior. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
Profound minds are the most likely to think lightly of the resources of human reason, and it is the superficial thinker who is generally strongest in every kind of unbelief. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
To me there never has been a higher source of honour or distinction than that connected with advances in science. I have not possessed enough of the eagle in my character to make a direct flight to the loftiest altitudes in the social world; and I certainly never endeavored to reach those heights by using the creeping powers of the reptile, who in ascending, generally chooses the dirtiest path, because it is the easiest. ~ Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by Humphry Davy
When I was 8 years old, I made my own encyclopedia of American biography - Johnny Appleseed, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, Charles Lindbergh, my pantheon of favorite heroes. Then I would write my own things and sew them together and try to make my own book. ~ Douglas Brinkley
Humphry Davy quotes by Douglas Brinkley
Sir Humphrey Davy Abominated gravy. He lived in the odium Of having discovered sodium. Said to have been written as a schoolboy during a chemistry class at St. Paul's School. ~ E.C. Bentley
Humphry Davy quotes by E.C. Bentley
The questions people have are sometimes soulful, sometimes zany, sometimes incoherent. I want to make a 'zine with just the questions I get emailed to me. ~ Davy Rothbart
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
Are you prepared for what's next? ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
People like to be shown around archives. I don't know why. I'm in the business, but one row of shelves stuffed with manila files looks much like another. ~ V.T. Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by V.T. Davy
People ask me if I ever get sick of playing 'Daydream Believer' or whatever. But I don't look at it that way. Do they ask if Tony Bennett is tired of 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco?' ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
I believed, from the solitary and thoughtful way in which my mother murmured her song, that she was alone. And I went softly into the room. She was sitting by the fire, suckling an infant, whose tiny hand she held against her neck. Her eyes were looking down upon its face, and she sat singing to it. I was so far right, that she had no other companion.
I spoke to her, and she started, and cried out. But seeing me, she called me her dear Davy, her own boy! and coming half across the room to meet me, kneeled down upon the ground and kissed me, and laid my head down on her bosom near the little creature that was nestling there, and put its hand up to my lips.
I wish I had died. I wish I had died then, with that feeling in my Heart! I should have been more fit for Heaven than I ever have been since. ~ Charles Dickens
Humphry Davy quotes by Charles Dickens
I had always served beauty. Davy and I together had loved beauty. Now, maybe, I was worshipping beauty in the Christian God while Davy was worshipping God. There may be danger in the love of beauty, though it seems treason to say it. Perhaps it can be a snare. ~ Sheldon Vanauken
Humphry Davy quotes by Sheldon Vanauken
My wife says when I go out to the refrigerator, I do three minutes (entertaining) when the light goes on! ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
Sorrow, it is said, will make even an oyster feel poetical. I never tried my hand at that sort of writing but on this particular occasion such was my state of feeling, that I began to fancy myself inspired; so I took pen in hand, and as usual I went ahead. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
When everyone else saw the two of them, they saw Gavin who was nothing but trouble and Davy who was a wallflower, but in Gavin's estimation, if you looked inside you'd see that Gavin was just a scared little boy and Davy was his hero. ~ Kade Boehme
Humphry Davy quotes by Kade Boehme
I also told them of the manner in which I had been knocked down and dragged out, and that I didn't consider it a fair fight any how they could fix it. I put the ingredients in the cup pretty strong I tell you, and I concluded my speech by telling them that I was done with politics for the present, and they might all go to hell, and I would go to Texas. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
I would have married her before I went away to war too, just to make sure that someone else didn't. ~ V.T. Davy
Humphry Davy quotes by V.T. Davy
Be sure you are right, then go ahead. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
I was mad at Screen Gems, but I'm not mad at them anymore. ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
I am richer than Davy Crockett. I can settle back and do what I want to do. And what I want to do is card tricks and magic. ~ Harry Anderson
Humphry Davy quotes by Harry Anderson
Free, I think. They're free.
(is this why she joined them?)
I feel so-
So relieved.
I pick up the pace as I near the opening, my hands gripping my rifle but I have a feeling I ain't gonna need it.
(ah, Viola, I knew I could count-)
Then I reach the opening and stop.
Everything stops.
My stomach falls right thru my feet.
"They're all gone?" Davy says, coming up beside me.
Then he see what I see.
"What the-?" Davy says.
The Spackle ain't all gone.
They're still here.
Every single one.
All 1150 of them.
Dead. ~ Patrick Ness
Humphry Davy quotes by Patrick Ness
You was talkin' out of yer head last night, too," chortles Davy. "No one's gonna fancy me. I'm gonna be ugly and no on'es gonna fancyme!" he mimics, mincing about the hammock. "You are such a rum cove, Jacky, for thinkin' such things when yer just about beat t' death! Fancy me? Fancy me? Jacky, no one's gonna fancy us, we're all gonna end up lookin' like Snag!"
"Which is how a salty dog sailor's supposed to look," says Willy with a firm nod.
"And you're halfway there, Jack-o!" crows Tink.
Ah, the sweet comfort of friends. ~ L.A. Meyer
Humphry Davy quotes by L.A. Meyer
Although our great man at the head of the nation, has changed his course, I will not change mine. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
Marry her right away. Tomorrow, if you want. You don't know how much time you get with someone, so you might as well start right away. ~ Davy Rothbart
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
But Mr. Davy would not become a doctor, for a copy of Lavoisier's Elements of Chemistry fell into his hands. Soon enough, Davy was discharged from Dr. Borlase's service because of his habit of performing explosive experiments. ~ Benjamin Wiker
Humphry Davy quotes by Benjamin Wiker
I know nothing, by experience, of party discipline. I would rather be a raccoon-dog, and belong to a Negro in the forest, than to belong to any party, further than to do justice to all, and to promote the interests of my country. The time will and must come, when honesty will receive its reward, and when the people of this nation will be brought to a sense of their duty, and will pause and reflect how much it cost us to redeem ourselves from the government of one man. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
There's no key to the universe, you just have to point your way in one direction, keep going, keep going, keep going, and see what happens. ~ Davy Rothbart
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
You can go to hell
I'm going to Texas. ~ Davy Crockett
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Crockett
On tour, it's hard to do much writing, but if I'm on a deadline, I find a way. ~ Davy Rothbart
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
The Beatles set the rules. And the rules were: now just because we have long hair doesn't mean that we're rebellious. ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
I would say that fifty percent of my show is killer comedy. ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
In the office, the mail that came in was always 10 to 1 for me. ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
Anybody bugs you, anybody at all, I'll rip off both his arms. You got me?"
She tried to smile. "That's sweet, Davy. Bloodthirsty, but sweet. ~ Shannon McKenna
Humphry Davy quotes by Shannon McKenna
I'd like a glass of cold gravy with a hair in it, please. ~ Davy Jones
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Jones
Or perhaps we should just ask Todd."
I pound the glass right at his face. He doesn't even flinch.
And then she says, "Todd would never tell you. Never."
And the Mayor just looks at me.
And he smiles

My stomach sinks, my heart drops, my head feels so light I feel like I'm going to drop right to the ground.
Oh, Viola-
Viola, please-
Forgive me.
"Captain Hammar," the Mayor says and Viola's plunged into the water again, unable to not scream out in fright as down she goes.
"NO!" I shout, pressing myself against the mirror.
But the Mayor ain't even looking at her.
He's looking right at me, as if he could see me even if I was behind a brick wall.
"STOP IT!" I shout as she's thrashing again-
And more-
And more-
"VIOLA!"
And I'm pounding even tho my hands are breaking-
And Mr. Hammar is grinning and holding her there-
"VIOLA!"
And her wrist are starting to bleed from where she's pulling-
"I'LL KILL YOU!"-
I'm shouting into the Mayor's face-
With all my Noise-
"I'LL KILL YOU!"-
And still holding her there-
"VIOLA! VIOLA!"-
But it's Davy-
Of all people-
It's Davy who stops it. ~ Patrick Ness
Humphry Davy quotes by Patrick Ness
Make sure you're right, then go ahead. ~ Davy Crockett

Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
He is sorry-
For everything-
For Prentisstown-
For Viola-
For Ben-
For every failure and every wrong-
For letting his pa down-
And he's looking up at me-
And he's begging me-
He's begging me-
Like I'm the only one who can forgive him-
Like it's only me who's got the power-
Todd?-
Please-
And all I can say is "Davy-"
And the fright and the terror in his Noise is too much-
It's too much-
And then it stops.
Davy slumps, eyes still open, eyes still staring back at me, eyes still asking (I swear) for me to forgive him.
And he lies there, still.
Davy Prentiss is dead. ~ Patrick Ness
Humphry Davy quotes by Patrick Ness
I have a black Grandma and white Grandma. My white Grandma lives in Fort Lauderdale, paints, and teaches bridge. She's wonderful. My black Grandma, equally wonderful, is my neighbor across the street, Bobbie, who's always insisted that I call her Grandma, and honestly, over the years she's become a real Grandma to me. ~ Davy Rothbart
Humphry Davy quotes by Davy Rothbart
Davy, I knew the exact time of your birth and what you would look like when the time was at hand, for I dream dreams. Now is the time. A great evil is brewing in the land that will turn the nation against itself. But you must make a stand for what is right. Be strong, young man, be strong. ~ David Holdsworth
