I suppose I could get a job to have something to do, but working when I don't have to work would be like pulling a straight and healthy tooth
pointless and extremely painful.
David Palmer ~ Stephen Reid Andrews
Humor Work quotes by Stephen Reid Andrews
Anyone and everyone taking a writing class knows that the secret of good writing is to cut it back, pare it down, winnow, chop, hack, prune, and trim, remove every superfluous word, compress, compress, compress...

Actually, when you think about it, not many novels in the Spare tradition are terribly cheerful. Jokes you can usually pluck out whole, by the roots, so if you're doing some heavy-duty prose-weeding, they're the first to go. And there's some stuff about the whole winnowing process I just don't get. Why does it always stop when the work in question has been reduced to sixty or seventy thousand words--entirely coincidentally, I'm sure, the minimum length for a publishable novel? I'm sure you could get it down to twenty or thirty if you tried hard enough. In fact, why stop at twenty or thirty? Why write at all? Why not just jot the plot and a couple of themes down on the back of an envelope and leave it at that? The truth is, there's nothing very utilitarian about fiction or its creation, and I suspect that people are desperate to make it sound manly, back-breaking labor because it's such a wussy thing to do in the first place. The obsession with austerity is an attempt to compensate, to make writing resemble a real job, like farming, or logging. (It's also why people who work in advertising put in twenty-hour days.) Go on, young writers--treat yourself to a joke, or an adverb! Spoil yourself! Readers won't mind! ~ Nick Hornby
Humor Work quotes by Nick Hornby
Llarimar had told him to do his best. That sounded like an awful lot of work. Unfortunately, doing nothing was beginning to seem like even MORE work. ~ Brandon Sanderson
Humor Work quotes by Brandon Sanderson
I find my anger ebbing away, and I'm lost in muffled grief again, this time not just for Tris, but for Uriah, whose smile is burned into my memory. My friend's brother, and then my friend, too, though not for long enough to let his humor work its way into me, not for long enough. ~ Veronica Roth
Humor Work quotes by Veronica Roth
I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours. ~ Jerome K. Jerome
Humor Work quotes by Jerome K. Jerome
Transparency, honesty, kindness, good stewardship, even humor, work in businesses at all times. ~ John Gerzema
Humor Work quotes by John Gerzema
Back in the days when gladiators hacked away at each other, there was always the man who decided whether the defeated should live or die. The job is usually given to the Emperor in movies, but in fact any senior man could have been the designated thumbs-up-thumbs-down guy.
The official title for this fellow was ... the editor. (evil laughter in background) ~ Gary Corby
Humor Work quotes by Gary Corby
You see, in this country are a number of youths who do not like to work, and the college is an excellent place for them. ~ L. Frank Baum
Humor Work quotes by L. Frank Baum
Discipline allows magic. To be a writer is to be the very best of assassins. You do not sit down and write every day to force the Muse to show up. You get into the habit of writing every day so that when she shows up, you have the maximum chance of catching her, bashing her on the head, and squeezing every last drop out of that bitch. ~ Lili St. Crow
Humor Work quotes by Lili St. Crow
You get work however you get work, but people keep working in a freelance world (and more and more of todays world is freelance), because their work is good, because they are easy to get along with and because they deliver the work on time. And you don't even need all three! Two out of three is fine. People will tolerate how unpleasant you are if your work is good and you deliver it on time. People will forgive the lateness of your work if it is good and they like you. And you don't have to be as good as everyone else if you're on time and it's always a pleasure to hear from you. ~ Neil Gaiman
Humor Work quotes by Neil Gaiman
It's funny how things work out sometimes. ~ Anthony Horowitz
Humor Work quotes by Anthony Horowitz
It was a well-known fact that Lorna was leaving in six months' time, since Lorna had been leaving in six months' time for close to twenty-five years. ~ Danielle Wood
Humor Work quotes by Danielle Wood
Scale the heights of your career and break that glass ceiling, but do it very quietly and gingerly, and be sure to make a man think he did it for you. ~ Sarah Cooper
Humor Work quotes by Sarah Cooper
In his opinion, working was vastly overrated. Particularly as a way to build character, for everyone who engaged in it was far too snappish and fussy, and seemed to have no manners at all. ~ Hilari Bell
Humor Work quotes by Hilari Bell
Last week my boss told me to rewrite a twenty-page proposal on engagement benchmarking. I turned it in and he wrote a note on the cover that just said, "No, no. Not this." I had no idea what he wanted, so I just put it off, and then when he came in this morning and told me he needed the final draft in a half-hour I printed out the exact same one as before, but this time on prettier paper. This afternoon he brought the whole team together to tell everyone I was the perfect example of being able to listen to constructive criticism. ~ Jenny Lawson
Humor Work quotes by Jenny Lawson
I hope I pass on my dad's good humor, work ethic and lack of self-seriousness. Our house was always a fun place where you'd get knocked around quickly if you took yourself too seriously. ~ Willie Geist
Humor Work quotes by Willie Geist
It was like having two children in the car with her. Okay, one child and a young adult that
kept backsliding. Hal, of course, was attempting to prove he was really only eight years old.
Taggart could resist the taunting part of the time. Nigel was the senile grandmother who never
noticed that the children were fighting. He sat in the backseat, smiling serenely at the passing
landscape. What made things worse was that Taggart called shotgun so he could film through the
front window. That made it so she couldn't reach Hal to swat him into silence. She found herself
tempted to hit Taggart just because he was beside her. And because he'd changed into a dark blue
silk shirt and cologne that smelled so good she just wanted to roll in it.
"I can kill us all," Jane growled, gripping the wheel tightly, and resisted the urge to drive the
production truck into the ditch to prove her point.
Somehow they reached downtown without her killing anyone. ~ Wen Spencer
Humor Work quotes by Wen Spencer
But you're stuck filming crap now." Hal snorted. "Chased by monsters? Better be damn good
at running."
"And exactly how do you get hurt filming a landscaping show?" Taggart retorted.
"If it can't kill us, we don't film it," Jane said, to stop the fighting before it could start. "There's
a lot of dangerous flora and fauna in Pittsburgh and it doesn't stay beyond the Rim. It comes into
people's backyards and sets up shop. We teach our viewers how to deal with it, but it means we
have to actually get close enough to get hurt."
"Deal with, as in kill?" Nigel seemed flabbergasted.
"This isn't Earth. These aren't endangered species. This morning we were dealing with a very
large strangler vine in a neighborhood with lots of children. There's no way to 'move' it to
someplace where it isn't a danger, especially while it's actively trying to kill anything that
stumbles into its path. Pets. Children. Automated lawnmowers."
"That one is always amusing to watch but it always ends badly for the lawnmower," Hal said. ~ Wen Spencer
Humor Work quotes by Wen Spencer
In the household in which I was raised, the themes were pretty simple. 'Work hard. Don't quit. Be appreciative, be thankful, be grateful, be respectful. Also, never whine, never complain. And always, for crying out loud, keep a sense of humor.' ~ Michael Keaton
Humor Work quotes by Michael Keaton
If you do the job badly enough, sometimes you don't get asked to do it again. ~ Bill Watterson
Humor Work quotes by Bill Watterson
It was the first time many of the women had spent time in a bonafide workplace apart from a classroom, and they discovered what workplaces are and have been since the dawn of time: places where one is annoyed and thwarted and underpaid and interrupted and under appreciated. ~ Liza Mundy
Humor Work quotes by Liza Mundy
Work is the greatest thing in the world. So we should save some of it for tomorrow. ~ Don Herold
Humor Work quotes by Don Herold
Why do I have to do the sewin'? 'Cause I'm a girl? Is that it? It ain't fair, I tell ya! ~ Sean Cullen
Humor Work quotes by Sean Cullen
There's a very mean girl down the hall who's trying to get me fired. I'm no good with confrontation, so whenever I say, "Have a wonderful day," to her out loud, I'm really saying, "Be nice to me or I will stab you in the face with a fork," in my head. I wish her a wonderful day at least once an hour. She's starting to get paranoid and jumpy about it, but there's really nothing she can do, because she can't complain about me wishing her a wonderful day without sounding totally insane. This is why you should never mess with nonconfrontational people. Because they're too unstable to second-guess. And because they're totally the kind of people who could suddenly snap, and stab you in the face with a fork. ~ Jenny Lawson
Humor Work quotes by Jenny Lawson
One thing you must never lose is courage. If you believe in the goal you are striving for, you will be courageous. There are many difficult times ahead, but you must keep your sense of humor, work through the tough situations, and enjoy yourself! ~ Shigesato Itoi
Humor Work quotes by Shigesato Itoi
Jane snorted out in disgust. "Okay, the good news is spotting the saurus just got a hell of a lot
easier. Plus we've got a ton of free bait."
"The bad news?" Taggart asked.
"Smart boy. Cookie for knowing that there's bad news." Jane eased her SUV across the worn
divided line to drive along the berm. "Bad news, Pittsburgh beef cows are the meanest son-of-abitches."
"So, we have to dodge several tons of pissed off sirloin while filming one hungry dinosaur?"
"Welcome to Pittsburgh. ~ Wen Spencer
Humor Work quotes by Wen Spencer
Before receiving your instruction, I must tell you what happened to me one day. I had just had a closet built at the end of my garden. I heard a mole arguing with a cockchafer; 'Here's a fine structure,' said the mole, 'it must have been a very powerful mole who did this work.' 'You're joking,' said the cockchafer; 'it's a cockchafer full of genius who is the architect of this building.' From that moment I resolved never to argue. ~ Voltaire
Humor Work quotes by Voltaire
Ok," he said, "I don't like to disturb you at what I know must be a difficult and distressing time for you, but I need to know first of all if you actually realize that this is a difficult and distressing time for you. ~ Douglas Adams
Humor Work quotes by Douglas Adams
Live like a man, fuck like an animal and die like a plant. ~ Claire Amber
Humor Work quotes by Claire Amber
It's usually obvious when you're talking to somebody a level above you, because they see lots of things instantly when those things take considerable work for you to figure out. These are good people to learn from, because they remember what it's like to struggle in the place where you're struggling, but the things they do still make sense from your perspective (you just couldn't do them yourself). Talking to somebody two or more levels above you is a different story. They're barely speaking the same language, and it's almost impossible to imagine that you could ever know what they know. You can still learn from them, if you don't get discouraged, but the things they want to teach you seem really philosophical, and you don't think they'll help you - but for some reason, they do. Somebody three levels above is actually speaking a different language. They probably seem less impressive to you than the person two levels above, because most of what they're thinking about is completely invisible to you. From where you are, it is not possible to imagine what they think about, or why. You might think you can, but this is only because they know how to tell entertaining stories. Any one of these stories probably contains enough wisdom to get you halfway to your next level if you put in enough time thinking about it. Getting organized can bring us all to the next level in our lives. ~ Daniel J. Levitin
Humor Work quotes by Daniel J. Levitin
For appearances. Now there's a lovely thing to die for. ~ Gerald Morris
Humor Work quotes by Gerald Morris
ability to know that you're not perfect but that you can get better if you look within, internalize the struggle, and work harder, instead of bringing everyone else down. ~ Adam Carolla
Humor Work quotes by Adam Carolla
I want to compliment The Heritage Foundation for its work on behalf of a strong national defense. ~ Don Nickles
Humor Work quotes by Don Nickles
We have very strong succession plans across all group companies. But we do not comment on it. The retirement age is 60 years, but it does not apply to family professionals who work in the business. ~ Adi Godrej
Humor Work quotes by Adi Godrej
Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron," Sebastian said approvingly. "Excellent choice."
"You have read this?" Alexei asked.
"It's not as good as Miss Davenport and the Dark Marquis, of course, but worlds better than Miss Sainsbury and the Mysterious Colonel."
Harry found himself rendered speechless.
"I'm reading Miss Truesdale and the Silent Gentleman right now."
"Silent?" Harry echoed.
"There is a noticeable lack of dialogue," Sebastian confirmed. ~ Julia Quinn
Humor Work quotes by Julia Quinn
Control was the basis of all humor. Even at its most innocent, what was a joke or a clever comment if not a way to take control? To become King of the Moment. ~ Adam Rex
Humor Work quotes by Adam Rex
I know you're angry and I know that it'll take work, but I just want you to try. To give getting through my fuck-ups together a chance. I need to know that you can give a shit about me again. ~ Emily Snow
Humor Work quotes by Emily Snow
If you were me, then I'd be you, and if I were you, then I'd hide somewhere far away. ~ Eoin Colfer
Humor Work quotes by Eoin Colfer
Opinions are like nipples, everybody has one. Some have firm points, others are barely discernible through layers, and some are displayed at every opportunity regardless of whether the audience has stated "I am interested in your nipples" or not. ~ David Thorne
Humor Work quotes by David Thorne
I'm not saying I was scared. Okay, I was scared. He had an MP5. I had a Nikon. ~ Joel C. Rosenberg
Humor Work quotes by Joel C. Rosenberg
Persistent work always brings a person successful results ~ Sunday Adelaja
Humor Work quotes by Sunday Adelaja
If you are lazy, then undoubtedly you will soon become poor ~ Sunday Adelaja
Humor Work quotes by Sunday Adelaja
The supermarket shelves have been rearranged. It happened one day without warning. There is agitation and panic in the aisles, dismay in the faces of older shoppers.[…]They scrutinize the small print on packages, wary of a second level of betrayal. The men scan for stamped dates, the women for ingredients. Many have trouble making out the words. Smeared print, ghost images. In the altered shelves, the ambient roar, in the plain and heartless fact of their decline, they try to work their way through confusion. But in the end it doesn't matter what they see or think they see. The terminals are equipped with holographic scanners, which decode the binary secret of every item, infallibly. This is the language of waves and radiation, or how the dead speak to the living. And this is where we wait together, regardless of our age, our carts stocked with brightly colored goods. A slowly moving line, satisfying, giving us time to glance at the tabloids in the racks. Everything we need that is not food or love is here in the tabloid racks. The tales of the supernatural and the extraterrestrial. The miracle vitamins, the cures for cancer, the remedies for obesity. The cults of the famous and the dead. ~ Don DeLillo
Humor Work quotes by Don DeLillo
I think art is the ability to change people with your work, to see things as they are and then create stories, images, and interactions that change the marketplace. ~ Seth Godin
Humor Work quotes by Seth Godin
What does one wear on the first day of work at a psychic tearoom? ~ Alys Arden
Humor Work quotes by Alys Arden
A good joke doesn't necessarily need appreciation from others. One can freely laugh at one's own deserving jokes. ~ Pawan Mishra
Humor Work quotes by Pawan Mishra

Humor Work quotes by Tom Butler-Bowdon
Wisdom of the Ages: Do the aliens on the moon pull down their pants and 'earth' their friends for fun? ~ Matthew D. Heines
Humor Work quotes by Matthew D. Heines
The girl's face looks greedy, haughty and very lazy. The cream-at-the-top-of-the-milkpail face of someone who will never work for anything; someone who picks up things lying on other people's dressers and is not embarrassed when found out. It is the face of a sneak who glides over to your sink to rinse the fork you have laid by her plate. An inward face
whatever it sees is its own self. You are there, it says, because I am looking at you. ~ Toni Morrison
Humor Work quotes by Toni Morrison
Imagine how weird phones would look if your mouth was nowhere near your ears. ~ Steven Wright
Humor Work quotes by Steven Wright
[I] learned ... that friends are a good source of food and soul when one has not yet gotten the hang of cooking or living (as opposed to dying) alone. That nothing-not booze, not love, not sex, not work, not moving from state to state-will make the past disappear. Only time and patience heal things. I learned that cutting up your arms in an attempt to make the pain move from inside to outside, from soul to skin, is futile. That death is a cop-out. I tried all of these things. ~ Marya Hornbacher
Humor Work quotes by Marya Hornbacher
As a citizen I might be well-behaved and have nothing salacious or radical about me, I might be a total bore, but I might suffer somehow if other people are being spied on and blocked from doing important work that might have a collective benefit down the road. The personal doesn't necessarily translate to the social. ~ Astra Taylor
Humor Work quotes by Astra Taylor

Humor Work quotes by Steve Voake
Life is good, and there's no reason to think it won't be
right up until the moment when everything explodes into a fireball of tiny, unrecognizable fragments, or it all goes skidding sideways, through the guardrail, over the embankment, and down the mountain. This will happen (and probably more than once). ~ Michael J. Fox
Humor Work quotes by Michael J. Fox
We always monitor the flow of information, intelligence, threat streams to see whether we have any indication there's some imminent. We work hard to identify potential cells and disrupt them. This is one of the reasons we put so much emphasis on intelligence gathering. ~ Michael Chertoff
Humor Work quotes by Michael Chertoff
I simply do not distinguish between work and play. ~ Mary Oliver
Humor Work quotes by Mary Oliver
We're building an independent political program that can run electoral politics and then turn on a dime to hold our leaders to task, in case they suddenly develop that old case of amnesia! We'll be there to remind them what they promised and who they promised to work for! ~ Richard Trumka
