[D]umb evolutionary processes have dramatically amplified the intelligence in the human lineage even compared with our close relatives the great apes and our own humanoid ancestors; and there is no reason to suppose Homo sapiens to have reached the apex of cognitive effectiveness attainable in a biological system. ~ Nick Bostrom
Human Brain quotes by Nick Bostrom
The ultimate cause of human suffering is based on the internal structure of the mind. All causes of the discomfort and distress mainly come from the inner world. Given that the human brain is a necessary and sufficient cause of the human mind, in general, a person should begin with a reconfiguration of the brain if he or she wants to avoid all the sufferings in life. Remember that the brain is the ultimate cure for all suffering. ~ Elmar Hussein
Human Brain quotes by Elmar Hussein
The seat of consciousness - what's known as 'sensorium' - exists partly as an expression of particle entanglement in higher physical dimensions. The human brain is merely a conduit. ~ Daniel Suarez
Human Brain quotes by Daniel Suarez
Melody is the single most important thing to any song, period. I don't care what anybody says, it trumps everything. Not because that's my opinion but because I think it's actually indisputable fact. The human brain retains melody easier than it retains words. It's that simple. ~ Ryan Tedder
Human Brain quotes by Ryan Tedder
How curious it was, how ironic, he decided, that the human brain seemed capable of understanding almost everything but itself. ~ Edward B. Hanna
Human Brain quotes by Edward B. Hanna
The human brain is an incredible pattern-matching machine. ~ Jeff Bezos
Human Brain quotes by Jeff Bezos
I just don't care for apologies. They're never sincere. I can vouch for this since I have the urge at this very moment to apologize for being so rude. But honestly, my impulse to apologize is only because I feel uncomfortable with the guilt I feel and my stupid human brain associates an apology with mollifying my own discomfort. Apologies are just a reminder of how selfish people are. ~ J.L. Mac
Human Brain quotes by J.L. Mac
You know how in sports baseball players, they hit home runs. Football players, they throw and they score touchdowns. I get to do something that very few people get to do - I get to touch the human brain, and every day I get to hit home runs, I get to score touchdowns. ~ Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa
Human Brain quotes by Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa
The human brain is hardwired to have this fundamental experience of universal consciousness, which is available to anyone from any culture, of any age, any religion, and without any philosophical predisposition. ~ John Hagelin
Human Brain quotes by John Hagelin
So which theory did Lagos believe in? The
relativist or the universalist?"
"He did not seem to think there was much of a difference. In the end, they are
both somewhat mystical. Lagos believed that both schools of thought had
essentially arrived at the same place by different lines of reasoning."
"But it seems to me there is a key difference," Hiro says. "The universalists
think that we are determined by the prepatterned structure of our brains -- the
pathways in the cortex. The relativists don't believe that we have any limits."
"Lagos modified the strict Chomskyan theory by supposing that learning a
language is like blowing code into PROMs -- an analogy that I cannot interpret."
"The analogy is clear. PROMs are Programmable Read-Only Memory chips," Hiro
says. "When they come from the factory, they have no content. Once and only
once, you can place information into those chips and then freeze it -- the
information, the software, becomes frozen into the chip -- it transmutes into
hardware. After you have blown the code into the PROMs, you can read it out,
but you can't write to them anymore. So Lagos was trying to say that the
newborn human brain has no structure -- as the relativists would have it -- and
that as the child learns a language, the developing brain structures itself
accordingly, the language gets 'blown into the hardware and becomes a permanent
part of the brain's deep ~ Neal Stephenson
Human Brain quotes by Neal Stephenson
The human brain is fascinating; we will forget a scent until we smell it again, we will erase a voice from our memory until we hear it again, and even emotions that seemed buried forever will be awakened when we return to the same place. ~ Paulo Coelho
Human Brain quotes by Paulo Coelho
The storage capacity of the average human brain is two-hundred and fifty-six exabytes. However, the average adult human only uses approximately one billionth of that storage space effectively. This means my knowledge capacity is approximately three thousand trillion times that of your average human. ~ Michael Monroe
Human Brain quotes by Michael Monroe
When I was 10 years old, a cousin of mine took me on a tour of his medical school. And as a special treat, he took me to the pathology lab and took a real human brain out of the jar and placed it in my hands. And there it was, the seat of human consciousness, the powerhouse of the human body, sitting in my hands. ~ Aditi Shankardass
Human Brain quotes by Aditi Shankardass
The Human brain is a hotbed of imagination, capable of taking a simple stimulus and magnifying it many times greater than it is ... let your mind run wild! ~ Red Phoenix
Human Brain quotes by Red Phoenix
Thus, an inhibition center developed below what in humans is the temporal lobe, to turn off much of the functioning of the reptilian brain; and an activation center evolved in the pons to turn on the R-complex, but harmlessly, during sleep. ~ Carl Sagan
Human Brain quotes by Carl Sagan
The human brain is the god of technological innovation. ~ Terence McKenna
Human Brain quotes by Terence McKenna
So you don't think that God created the brain?' I asked.
'No, I don't think that,' Dr. Enderby replied. 'I think that the brain created God. Because the human brain, however wonderful, is still quite fallible - as both you and I know. It's always searching for answers, but even when it's working as it should, its explanations are rarely perfect - especially when it comes to very big, complicated questions. That's why we have to nurture it. We have to give it plenty of space to develop. ~ Gavin Extence
Human Brain quotes by Gavin Extence
Accepting trial and error means accepting error. It means taking problems in our stride when a decision doesn't work out, whether through luck or misjudgment. And that is not something human brains seem to be able to do without a struggle. ~ Tim Harford
Human Brain quotes by Tim Harford
The human brain has evolved the capacity to impose a narrative, complete with chronology and cause-and-effect logic, on whatever it encounters, no matter how apparently random. ~ Robin Marantz Henig
Human Brain quotes by Robin Marantz Henig
The human brain cannot encompass total absence. Like infinity, it is simply not something that the organ runs to. The space someone leaves must be filled, so we dream forever of those who are no longer here. Our minds make them live again. ~ Anna Funder
Human Brain quotes by Anna Funder
Professor Ramachandran believes this synesthetic connection between our hearing and seeing senses was an important first step towards the creation of words in early humans. According to this theory, our ancestors would have begun to talk by using sounds that evoked the object they wanted to describe. For example, words referring to something small often involve making a synesthetic small i sound with the lips and a narrowing of the vocal tracts: Little, teeny, petite, whereas the opposite is true of words denoting something large or enormous. If the theory is right, then language emerged from the vast array of synesthetic connections in the human brain. ~ Daniel Tammet
Human Brain quotes by Daniel Tammet
Business of all kinds, over the centuries, had atrophied certain sense receptors and areas of the human brain, so that for most of the fellows taking part, the present-day rituals were no more, and even maybe a little less, than hollow mummery. ~ Thomas Pynchon
Human Brain quotes by Thomas Pynchon
The product here is not so much books as that goal of ten thousand years of history, the thing the human brain craves above all else and nature will die refusing to give: convenience. Ease is the disease ... ~ Richard Powers
Human Brain quotes by Richard Powers
The ultimate work of energy production is accomplished not in any specialized organ but in every cell of the body. A living cell, like a flame, burns fuel to produce the energy on which life depends. The analogy is more poetic than precise, for the cell accomplishes its 'burning' with only the moderate heat of the body's normal temperature. Yet all these billions of gently burning little fires spark the energy of life. Should they cease to burn, 'no heart could beat, no plant could grow upward defying gravity, no amoeba could swim, no sensation could speed along a nerve, no thought could flash in the human brain,' said the chemist Eugene Rabinowitch. ~ Rachel Carson
Human Brain quotes by Rachel Carson
You'd be amazed at the grand tales the human brain will throw up to make sense of something nonsensical. ~ Dianna Hardy
Human Brain quotes by Dianna Hardy
I think it is undeniably true that the human brain must work in models. The trick is to have your brain work better than the other person's brain because it understands the most fundamental models- ones that will do most work per unit. ~ Charlie Munger
Human Brain quotes by Charlie Munger
A human brain is encased in a skull and each human exists in separete body so it seems like there is always going to be a feeling of disconnect. One human being will never completely understand what another human is thinking or feeling ~ Gabby Bess
Human Brain quotes by Gabby Bess
Memorizing facts and then regurgitating them into carefully crafted words is not science people. It's intellectual bulimia. Real science happens when we explore what we don't know. The first law of understanding the human brain and the mind within, is to be an explorer. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Human Brain quotes by Abhijit Naskar
He referred to the human brain as a clown car parked between our ears. Open the doors and the clowns pile out. ~ Karen Joy Fowler
Human Brain quotes by Karen Joy Fowler
There can never be a conflict between science and religion, once you understand the spiritual knack of the human brain circuits. ~ Abhijit Naskar
Human Brain quotes by Abhijit Naskar
(On one estimate, the adult human brain stores about one billion bits - a couple of orders of magnitude less than a low-end smartphone. ~ Nick Bostrom
Human Brain quotes by Nick Bostrom
Research on the human brain has shown it is predisposed to think in the terms of a story.36 This predisposition is continuously reinforced and strengthened throughout the life of your brain. Imaging studies have shown only a small, quarter-sized region of your brain lights up when someone tells you a series of facts. However, when someone tells you a story laced with those facts, or those facts in action, your entire brain lights up. Not only can you program your mind with a story - you can program someone else's mind. ~ Isaiah Hankel
Human Brain quotes by Isaiah Hankel
Strategically placed at the level of her T3 vertebra, just below the deepest back on any of her blouses, was a tattoo of the human brain. He had to look away or else he'd jump her bones all over again. The brain got him every time. ~ Meredith Marple
Human Brain quotes by Meredith Marple
Remember that politics, colonialism, imperialism and war also originate in the human brain. ~ Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
Human Brain quotes by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
It seems a miracle that young children easily learn the language of any environment into which they were born. The generative approach to grammar, pioneered by Chomsky, argues that this is only explicable if certain deep, universal features of this competence are innate characteristics of the human brain. Biologically speaking, this hypothesis of an inheritable capability to learn any language means that it must somehow be encoded in the DNA of our chromosomes. Should this hypothesis one day be verified, then lingusitics would become a branch of biology. ~ Niels Kaj Jerne
Human Brain quotes by Niels Kaj Jerne
There is another connection between infancy and dreams: both are followed by amnesia. When we emerge from either state, we have great difficulty remembering what we have experienced. In both cases, I would suggest, the left hemisphere of the neocortex, which is responsible for analytic
recollection, has been functioning ineffectively. ~ Carl Sagan
Human Brain quotes by Carl Sagan
The human brain is a marvel. A mere 20 watts of energy are required to power the 22 billion neurons in a brain that's roughly the size of a grapefruit. To field a conventional computer with comparable cognitive capacity would require gigawatts of electricity and a machine the size of a football field. ~ John E. Kelly III
Human Brain quotes by John E. Kelly III
The human brain has billions of neurons and hundreds of billions of interconnections. It can process more than two million bits of information per second and can remember everything you have ever seen or heard. ~ Ben Carson
Human Brain quotes by Ben Carson
There is a limit to the work that can be got out of a human body or a human brain, and he is a wise man who wastes no energy on pursuits for which he is not fitted; and he is still wiser who, from among the things that he can do well, chooses and resolut ~ William E. Gladstone
Human Brain quotes by William E. Gladstone
There are almost no limits to the discoveries of how the human brain operates in illness and health, in sleep and waking and dreaming, in calm and under tension. The question is how far man can put these discoveries to use without using them not for cure but for power. ~ Max Lerner
Human Brain quotes by Max Lerner
Through Transcendental Meditation, the human brain can
experience that level of intelligence which is an ocean of all
knowledge, energy, intelligence, and bliss. ~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
Human Brain quotes by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
Nothing is as engaged as a retentive human brain as uncounted events is inhibited in it ~ Bashir F. Biodun
Human Brain quotes by Bashir F. Biodun
The early researchers described em-tracking as a hardware upgrade for the nervous system, maybe the result of a genetic shift, possibly a fast adaptation, Studies revealed an assortment of cognitive improvements: acute perceptual sensitivity, rapid data acquisition, high speed pattern recognition. The biggest change was in future prediction. Normally, the human brain is a selfish prognosticator, built to trace an individual's path into the future. The em-tracker's brain offers a wider oracle, capable of following a whole culture's path into the future. ~ Steven Kotler
Human Brain quotes by Steven Kotler
The human heart needs only the bare elements to survive, the human brain wants to the limitlessness of tolerance. Finding yourself is a matter of pitching your tent in the middle. ~ Zephyr McIntyre
Human Brain quotes by Zephyr McIntyre
Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (or BRAIN) project announced by President Obama, and the Human Brain Project of the European Union, which will potentially allocate billions of dollars to decode the pathways of the brain, all the way down to the neural level. ~ Michio Kaku
Human Brain quotes by Michio Kaku
I was taught that the human brain was the crowning glory of evolution so far, but I think it's a very poor scheme for survival. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Human Brain quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
Why does man freeze to death trying to reach the North Pole? Why does man drive himself to suffer the steam and heat of the Amazon? Why does he stagger his mind with the mathematics of the sky? Once the question mark has arisen in the human brain the answer must be found, if it takes a hundred years. A thousand years. ~ Walter Reisch
Human Brain quotes by Walter Reisch
Dyadic completion," Paul would've told Claire. "The human brain tends to assume that, if there's a victim, there has to be a villain. ~ Karin Slaughter
Human Brain quotes by Karin Slaughter
Perhaps they saw what their minds were instructed to see, because the human brain is not equipped to see War, Famine, Pollution, and Death when they don't want to be seen, and has got so good at not seeing that it often manages not to see them even when they abound on every side. ~ Terry Pratchett
Human Brain quotes by Terry Pratchett
There are 100 billion neurons in the adult human brain, and each neuron makes something like 1,000 to 10,000 contacts with other neurons in the brain. Based on this, people have calculated that the number of permutations and combinations of brain activity exceeds the number of elementary particles in the universe. ~ Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
Human Brain quotes by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
Given the nature of spiders, webs are inevitable. And given the nature of human beings, so are religions. Spiders can't help making fly-traps, and men can't help making symbols. That's what the human brain is there for - the turn the chaos of given experience into a set of manageable symbols. ~ Aldous Huxley
Human Brain quotes by Aldous Huxley
If the human brain were simple enough for us to understand, we would still be so stupid that we couldn't understand it. ~ Jostein Gaarder
Human Brain quotes by Jostein Gaarder
God designed the stomach to eject what is bad for it, but not the human brain. ~ Konrad Adenauer
Human Brain quotes by Konrad Adenauer
The human brain now holds the key to our future. We have to recall the image of the planet from outer space: a single entity in which air, water, and continents are interconnected. That is our home. ~ David Suzuki
Human Brain quotes by David Suzuki
Nevertheless, the human brain, which survives by hoping from one second to another, will always endeavor to put off the moment of truth. Moist ~ Terry Pratchett
Human Brain quotes by Terry Pratchett
Try to inspire them to consider the power and implications of such potential. I tell them that no computer network on earth can come close to the capacity of the average human brain. This resource that each one of us has is a tremendous gift from God - the most complex organ system in the entire universe. ~ Ben Carson
Human Brain quotes by Ben Carson
I have only a bare working knowledge of the human brain but it's enough to make me proud to be an American. ~ Don DeLillo
Human Brain quotes by Don DeLillo
It is unmatched in its ability to think, to communicate, and to reason. Most striking of all, it has a unique awareness of its identity and of its place in space and time. Welcome to the human brain, the cathedral of complexity. ~ Peter Coveney
Human Brain quotes by Peter Coveney
There's a part of the human brain, the temporal lobe, that is associated with religious experiences as well as with epilepsy. ~ Ken MacLeod
Human Brain quotes by Ken MacLeod
Got us a full moon too coming tomorrow night. Just make things a whole lot worse. All we need.
- Why is that?
- What's that, Marshal?
- The full moon. You think it makes people crazy?
- I know it does.- Found a wrinkle in one of the pages and used his index finger to smooth it out.
- How come?
- Well, you think about it - the moon affects the tide, right?
- Sure.
- Has some sort of magnet effect or something on water.
- I'll buy that.
- Human brain,- Trey said, - is over fifty percent water.
- No kidding?
- No kidding. You figure ol' Mr. Moon can jerk the ocean around, think what it can do to the head. ~ Dennis Lehane
Human Brain quotes by Dennis Lehane
About the brain scans taken of yogis while they meditate? The human brain, in advanced states of focus, will physically create a waxlike substance from the pineal gland. This brain secretion is unlike anything else in the body. It has an incredible healing effect, can literally regenerate cells, and may be one of the reasons yogis live so long. This is real science, Robert. This substance has inconceivable properties and can be created only by a mind that is highly tuned to a deeply focused state. ~ Dan Brown
Human Brain quotes by Dan Brown
I believe C++ instills fear in programmers, fear that the interaction of some details causes unpredictable results. Its unmanageable complexity has spawned more fear-preventing tools than any other language, but the solution should have been to create and use a language that does not overload the whole goddamn human brain with irrelevant details. ~ Erik Naggum
Human Brain quotes by Erik Naggum
The best gadget is the human brain. ~ Ed Kovacs
Human Brain quotes by Ed Kovacs
I bet the human brain is a kludge ~ Marvin Minsky
Human Brain quotes by Marvin Minsky
An example of perfection in nature is the cockroach. It was living six million years before us and it may outlast us by that long. The brain of a cockroach is a splendid little engine. It doesn't evolve and it doesn't need to. The human brain is a disaster from the point of view of perfection
great intellectual power combined with primitive emotional reactions. Human beings today are living with terrible risks of their own creation
nuclear weapons, the exploitation of natural resources, the great disparity between the wealthy and the poor. Our brains will probably bring us to destruction, but we also have the possibility of growth, evolution. I prefer being a human. We shouldn't always look for perfection, in nature or our lives. ~ Rita Levi-Montalcini
Human Brain quotes by Rita Levi-Montalcini
curing' victims of multiple-personality disorder is actually tantamount to serial murder. The issue has remained controversial in the wake of recent findings that the human brain can potentially contain up to one hundred forty fully-sentient personalities without significant sensory/motor impairment. The tribunal will also consider whether encouraging a multiple personality to reintegrate voluntarily - again, a traditionally therapeutic act - should be redefined as assisted suicide. Cross-linked to next item under cognition and legal. ~ Peter Watts
Human Brain quotes by Peter Watts
Fascinating, Doidge's book is a remarkable and hopeful portrait of the endless adaptability of the human brain. ~ Oliver Sacks
Human Brain quotes by Oliver Sacks
Yes, but I say that Nature is our enemy, that we must always fight against Nature, for she is continually bringing us back to an animal state. You may be sure that God has not put anything on this earth that is clean, pretty, elegant or accessory to our ideal; the human brain has done it. ~ Guy De Maupassant
Human Brain quotes by Guy De Maupassant
Hindsight must surely be the most useless function of the human brain, torturing yourself over the unalterable past. ~ Peter F. Hamilton
Human Brain quotes by Peter F. Hamilton
The world is endless, the universe inexhaustible, and the human brain will never be threatened with unemployment. ~ Genrich Altshuller
Human Brain quotes by Genrich Altshuller
Family wasn't like that, not really. It was not something small and compact, a "nuclear family": it was a great big mess of people, all interlinked, cousins and aunts and relatives-by-marriage and otherwise
it was a network, like the Conversation or a human brain. It was what he had tried to escape, going into the Up and Out, but you cannot run away from family, it follows you, wherever you go. ~ Lavie Tidhar
Human Brain quotes by Lavie Tidhar
Time is a structured perception of human brain on natural events.
Eternity ain't based on the human perception, but on perpetual cycle. ~ Toba Beta
Human Brain quotes by Toba Beta
Human experience depends on everything that can influence states of the human brain, ranging from changes in our genome to changes in the global economy. ~ Sam Harris
Human Brain quotes by Sam Harris
The human brain must continue to frame the problems for the electronic machine to solve. ~ David Sarnoff
Human Brain quotes by David Sarnoff
I once read that if the folds in the cerebral cortex were smoothed out it would cover a card table. That seemed quite unbelievable but it did make me wonder just how big the cortex would be if you ironed it out. I thought it might just about cover a family-sized pizza: not bad, but no card-table. I was astonished to realize that nobody seems to know the answer. A quick search yielded the following estimates for the smoothed out dimensions of the cerebral cortex of the human brain.

An article in Bioscience in November 1987 by Julie Ann Miller claimed the cortex was a "quarter-metre square." That is napkin-sized, about ten inches by ten inches. Scientific American magazine in September 1992 upped the ante considerably with an estimated of 1 1/2 square metres; thats a square of brain forty inches on each side, getting close to the card-table estimate. A psychologist at the University of Toronto figured it would cover the floor of his living room (I haven't seen his living room), but the prize winning estimate so far is from the British magazine New Scientist's poster of the brain published in 1993 which claimed that the cerebral cortex, if flattened out, would cover a tennis court. How can there be such disagreement? How can so many experts not know how big the cortex is? I don't know, but I'm on the hunt for an expert who will say the cortex, when fully spread out, will cover a football field. A Canadian football field. ~ Jay Ingram
Human Brain quotes by Jay Ingram
Faith is unlearning this senseless worries and misguided beliefs that keep us captive. It is far more complex than simply modifying behavior. Faith is rewiring the human brain. We are literally upgrading our minds by downloading the mind of Christ. ~ Mark Batterson
Human Brain quotes by Mark Batterson
This looks very much as if the integration of the day's experience into our memory, the forging of new neural links, is either an easier or a more urgent task. As the night wears on and this function is completed, the more affecting dreams, the more bizarre
material, the fears and lusts and other powerful emotions of the
dream material emerge. ~ Carl Sagan
Human Brain quotes by Carl Sagan
Dehaene even allows himself a few moments of (justifiable) annoyance at the way that "childhood reading experts" continue their debates about the best strategies for teaching reading to children in complete ignorance of a large and growing body of work on how the human brain processes written language. ~ Alan Jacobs
Human Brain quotes by Alan Jacobs
Scholars once proclaimed that the agricultural revolution was a great leap forward for humanity. They told a tale of progress fuelled by human brain power. Evolution gradually produced ever more intelligent people. Eventually, people were so smart that they were able to decipher nature's secrets, enabling them to tame sheep and cultivate wheat. As soon as this happened, they cheerfully abandoned the gruelling, dangerous, and often spartan life of hunter-gatherers, settling down to enjoy the pleasant, satiated life of farmers. ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Human Brain quotes by Yuval Noah Harari
The externalization of memory [via the use of external symbolic storage systems] has altered the actual memory architecture within which humans think, which is changing the role of biological memory, the way in which the human brain deploys its resources, and the form of modern culture. ~ Merlin Donald
Human Brain quotes by Merlin Donald
A profound intriguing and compelling guide to the intricacies of the human brain. ~ Oliver Sacks
Human Brain quotes by Oliver Sacks
The brain immediately confronts us with its great complexity. The human brain weighs only three to four pounds but contains about 100 billion neurons. Although that extraordinary number is of the same order of magnitude as the number of stars in the Milky Way, it cannot account for the complexity of the brain. The liver probably contains 100 million cells, but 1,000 livers do not add up to a rich inner life. ~ Gerald Fischbach
Human Brain quotes by Gerald Fischbach
How does the biological wetware of the brain give rise to our experience: the sight of emerald green, the taste of cinnamon, the smell of wet soil? What if I told you that the world around you, with its rich colors, textures, sounds, and scents is an illusion, a show put on for you by your brain? If you could perceive reality as it really is, you would be shocked by its colorless, odorless, tasteless silence. Outside your brain, there is just energy and matter. Over millions of years of evolution the human brain has become adept at turning this energy and matter into a rich sensory experience of being in the world. ~ David Eagleman
Human Brain quotes by David Eagleman
When I look at the human brain I'm still in awe of it. ~ Ben Carson
Human Brain quotes by Ben Carson
An ultimate joint challenge for the biological and the computational sciences is the understanding of the mechanisms of the human brain, and its relationship with the human mind. ~ Tony Hoare
Human Brain quotes by Tony Hoare
In every idea emanating from genius, or even in every serious human idea
born in the human brain
there always remains something
some sediment
which cannot be expressed to others, though one wrote volumes and lectured upon it for five-and-thirty years. There is always a something, a remnant, which will never come out from your brain, but will remain there with you, and you alone, for ever and ever, and you will die, perhaps, without having imparted what may be the very essence of your idea to a single living soul. ~ Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Human Brain quotes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
The human brain comprises 70% water, which means it's a similar consistency to tofu. Picture that for a second - a blob of tofu the size and shape of a brain. Now imagine taking that piece of tofu, and forcing your thumbs into it hard. It would burst wouldn't it?
Okay, now imagine those thumbs weren't thumbs but thumb-shaped pieces of bad news. And there weren't two of them, they were about half a dozen. Imagine you were forcing all six pieces of bad news - a divorce, multiple career snubs, accusations from the family of a dead celebrity, estranged kids, borderline homelessness, that kind of thing - into a piece of tofu.
With me? Good. Now imagine it's not tofu, but a human brain. And they're not pieces of bad news but six human thumbs. That's what happened to me. In 2001, my brain had half a dozen thumbs pushed into it. ~ Alan Partridge
Human Brain quotes by Alan Partridge
No matter how closely you examine the water, glucose, and electrolyte salts in the human brain, you can't find the point where these molecules became conscious. ~ Deepak Chopra
Human Brain quotes by Deepak Chopra
There is some evidence that dreaming is necessary. When people or other mammals are deprived of REM sleep (by awakening them as soon as the characteristic REM and EEG dream patterns emerge), the number of initiations of the dream state per night goes up, and, in severe cases, daytime hallucinations-that is, waking dreams-occur. ~ Carl Sagan
Human Brain quotes by Carl Sagan
The development of artificial intelligence may well imply that man will relinquish his intellectual supremacy in favor of thinking machines. With oceans of time available for future innovation, there seems to be no reason why machines cannot achieve and surpass anything of which the human brain is capable. ~ Paul Davies
Human Brain quotes by Paul Davies
The internet. Can we trust in that? Of course not. Give it six months and we'll probably discover Google's sewn together by orphans in sweatshops. Or that Wi-Fi does something horrible to your brain, like eating your fondest memories and replacing them with drawings of cross-eyed bats and a strong smell of puke. There's surely a great dystopian sci-fi novel yet to be written about a world in which it's suddenly discovered that wireless broadband signals deaden the human brain, slowly robbing us of all emotion, until after 10 years of exposure we're all either rutting in stairwells or listlessly reversing our cars over our own offspring with nary the merest glimmer of sympathy or pain on our faces. It'll be set in Basingstoke and called, Cuh, Typical. ~ Charlie Brooker
Human Brain quotes by Charlie Brooker
It's the way the human brain works: when enough events occur in a pattern, we stop thinking and go into macro mode. ~ N.K. Jemisin
Human Brain quotes by N.K. Jemisin
Sometimes I am fascinated by the power of the human brain. Our human heart can produce such an altruistic state of mind, one that can hold others more dear than oneself. These things are really remarkable. ~ Dalai Lama XIV
Human Brain quotes by Dalai Lama XIV
With its hundred billion nerve cells, with their hundred trillion interconnections, the human brain is the most complex phenomenon in the known universe - always, of course, excepting the interaction of some six billion such brains and their owners within the socio-technological culture of our planetary ecosystem! ~ Steven Rose
Human Brain quotes by Steven Rose
It is decreed by a merciful Nature that the human brain cannot think of two things simultaneously ... ~ Arthur Conan Doyle
Human Brain quotes by Arthur Conan Doyle
What makes it possible to learn advanced math fairly quickly is that the human brain is capable of learning to follow a given set of rules without understanding them, and apply them in an intelligent and useful fashion. Given sufficient practice, the brain eventually discovers (or creates) meaning in what began as a meaningless game. ~ Keith Devlin
Human Brain quotes by Keith Devlin
To a young man, even a student of the most fabulous and powerful school on the Civilized Worlds, the times during which he comes to maturity always seem normal no matter how extraordinary, how turbulent with change they really are. Imminent change and danger act as drugs upon the human brain, or rather, as rich foods that nourish the urge toward more life. And how easily one becomes used to such nourishment. Those who survive the signal events of history – the wars, plagues, alien contacts, vastenings, speciations and religious awakenings – develop a taste for ferment and evolution next to which all the moments of 'normal' existence will seem dull, flat, meaningless. (Indeed, viewed from a godly coign of vantage across more than two million years, nothing about humankind's astonishing journey from the grassy veldts of Afarique to the galaxy's cold, numinous stars can be seen as normal.) ~ David Zindell
Human Brain quotes by David Zindell
The smell of freedom. But perhaps it was true what his mother, the teacher, had said. That the human brain can reproduce detailed images of everything you have seen or heard, but not even the most basic smell. Smell. The images ~ Anonymous
Human Brain quotes by Anonymous
Humor is by far the most significant activity of the human brain. ~ Edward De Bono
Human Brain quotes by Edward De Bono
We are, as a species, neurologically uncomfortable with ambiguity. Imaging studies of the human brain in action demonstrate that the fussy little onboard computers in our skulls send out anxiety messages when confronted by conflicting or confusing information. As a consequence, we have a natural, internal impetus to settle on an interpretation that removes any perceived conflict. ~ Steve Volk
