How deaf and stupid have I been!" he thought, walking swiftly along.
"When someone reads a text, wants to discover its meaning, he will not
scorn the symbols and letters and call them deceptions, coincidence, and
worthless hull, but he will read them, he will study and love them, letter
by letter. But I, who wanted to read the book of the world and the book
of my own being, I have, for the sake of a meaning I had anticipated be-fore I read, scorned the symbols and letters, I called the visible world a
deception, called my eyes and my tongue coincidental and worthless
forms without substance. No, this is over, I have awakened, I have in-deed awakened and have not been born before this very day. ~ Hermann Hesse
Hull quotes by Hermann Hesse
For all its apparent speed, the ship was almost perfectly silent, and he experienced an enervating, eerie feeling, as though the ancient warship, mothballed all those centuries, had somehow not yet fully woken up, and events within its sleek hull still moved to another, slower tempo, made half of dreams. ~ Iain Banks
Hull quotes by Iain Banks
There is such joy in a good ship, and a greater joy to have the ship's belly fat with other men's silver. It is the Viking joy, driving a dragon-headed hull through a wind-driven sea towards a future full of feasts and laughter. The Danes taught me that and I love them for it. ~ Bernard Cornwell
Hull quotes by Bernard Cornwell
Let the Truth be known, no ship is unsinkable. The bigger the ship, the easier it is to sink her. I learned long ago that if you design how a ship'll sink, you can keep her afloat. I proposed all the watertight compartments and the double hull to slow these ships from sinking. In that way, you get everyone off. There's time for help to arrive, and the ship's less likely to break apart and kill someone while she's going down. ~ Thomas Andrews
Hull quotes by Thomas Andrews
God knew she was a troublesome wench, with a tongue that could strip the barnacles off a ship's hull. ~ Sabrina Jeffries
Hull quotes by Sabrina Jeffries
Nobody gives a crap about hockey down here - nobody. I coach kids' hockey down here and you can start to see the disinterest in the game here with the kids. ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
Since the nineteen-fifties, rural Florida has marketed itself to Northerners and Midwesterners as an unexplored paradise of citrus and mermaids. ~ Anne Hull
Hull quotes by Anne Hull
I'm not done yet making people miserable. If they're going to make me miserable, then I'm going to make them miserable. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
Thats what a ship is, you know. Its not a keel and a hull and a deck and sails. Thats what a ship needs. But what a ship is. What the Black Pearl really is ... is freedom. ~ Johnny Depp
Hull quotes by Johnny Depp
I am certain that, however great the hardships and the trials which loom ahead, our America will endure and the cause of human freedom will triumph. ~ Cordell Hull
Hull quotes by Cordell Hull
There is no greater responsibility resting upon peoples and governments everywhere than to make sure that enduring peace will this time - at long last - be established and maintained. ~ Cordell Hull
Hull quotes by Cordell Hull
Irwin F. Gellman's Secret Affairs: FDR, Cordell Hull, and Sumner Welles, ~ Larry Kramer
Hull quotes by Larry Kramer
What is it about beauty that intimidates; causing us to kneel somewhere deep inside and pray and wonder just how close we might crawl before being banished from the sanctuary? ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
Yesterday I noticed a scent of bark outside that I had not smelled in years. While the bark lingered in my nose, flushing out ancient tree houses and campfires and games of tag and capture the flag, I noticed that the birds seemed to be singing louder than usual and the leaves on the trees looked more pronounced, almost exaggerated in their lush clarity. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
If each of your time steps is one week long, you are not modeling the stock price terribly well over a one-week time period, because you are saying that there are only two possible outcomes. ~ John Hull
Hull quotes by John Hull
I hope I can do a better job than Mr. Bettman. ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
He uncovered the boat, his hands working the knots like he'd been doing it his whole life. Under the tarp was an old steel rowboat with no oars. The boat had been painted dark blue at one point, but the hull was so crusted with tar and salt it looked like one massive nautical bruise.
On the bow, the name Pax was still readable, lettered in gold. Painted eyes drooped sadly at the water level, as if the boat were about to fall asleep. On board were two benches, some steel wool, an old cooler, and a mound of frayed rope with one end tied to the mooring. At the bottom of the boat, a plastic bag and two empty Coke cans floated in several inches of scummy water.
"Behold," Frank said. "The mighty Roman navy. ~ Rick Riordan
Hull quotes by Rick Riordan
That was true, Iris would sometimes think, about marriage: it was only a boat, too. A wooden boat, difficult to build, even more difficult to maintain, whose beauty derived at least in part from its unlikelihood. Long ago the pragmatic justifications for both marriage and wooden-boat building had been lost or superseded. Why invest countless hours, years, and dollars in planing and carving, gluing and fastening, caulking and fairing, when a fiberglass boat can be had at a fraction of the cost? Why struggle to maintain love and commitment over decades when there were far easier ways to live, ones that required no effort or attention to prevent corrosion and rot? Why continue to pour your heart into these obsolete arts? Because their beauty, the way they connect you to your history and to the living world, justifies your efforts. A long marriage, like a classic wooden boat, could be a thing of grace, but only if great effort was devoted to its maintenance. At first your notions of your life with another were no more substantial than a pattern laid down in plywood. Then year by year you constructed the frame around the form, and began layering memories, griefs, and small triumphs like strips of veneer planking bent around the hull of everyday routine. You sanded down the rough edges, patched the misunderstandings, faired the petty betrayals. Sometimes you sprung a leak. You fell apart in rough weather or were smashed on devouring rocks. But then, as now, in the teeth of a storm, ~ Ayelet Waldman
Hull quotes by Ayelet Waldman
Oh, Myrtle, don't be didactic. It's not becoming in a young girl. Besides, men loathe it. ~ Veta Louise Simmons
Hull quotes by Veta Louise Simmons
With no small interest, Captain Delano continued to watch her
a proceeding not much facilitated by the vapors partly mantling the hull, through which the far matin light from her cabin streamed equivocally enough; much like the sun
by this time hemisphered on the rim of the horizon, and, apparently, in company with the strange ship entering the harbor
which, wimpled by the same low, creeping clouds, showed not unlike a Lima intriquante's one sinister eye peering across the Plaza from the Indian loop-hole of her dusk saya-y-manta. ~ Herman Melville
Hull quotes by Herman Melville
You have to know how to score. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
Anything that's signed by me on EBay is a forgery and not authentic. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
If you have an active mind, it always helps. You know, people who don't do crosswords, their minds fall asleep. That's why I do them-my mind is always working. One day my brain is going to explode through the top of my head. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
So it wasn't Peggy I was interested in, not her tears, her crumpled looks. She reminded me too much of myself. It was her comforters I marvelled at. How they seemed to bow down and declare themselves in front of her.
What had they been saying? Nothing in particular. All right, they said. It's all right, Peggy, they said. Now, Peggy. All right. All right.
Such kindness. That anybody could be so kind.
It is true that these young men, brought to our country to train for bombing missions on which so many of them would be killed, might have been speaking in the normal accents of Cornwall or Kent or Hull or Scotland. But to me they seemed unable to open their mouths without uttering some kind of blessing, a blessing on the moment. It didn't occur to me that their futures were all bound up with disaster, or that their ordinary lives had flown out the window and smashed on the ground. I just thought of the blessing, how wonderful to get on the receiving end of it, how lucky and undeserving was that Peggy. ~ Alice Munro
Hull quotes by Alice Munro
True blues ain't no new news about who's been abused
For the blues is as old as my stolen soul
I sang the blues when the missionaries came
Passing out bibles in Jesus' name
I sang the blues in the hull of the ship
Beneath the sting of the slavemaster's whip
I sang the blues when the ship anchored the dark
My family being sold on a slave block
I sang the blues being torn from my first born
And hung my head and cried when my wife took his life
And then committed suicide.
I sang the blues on the slavemaster's plantation helping
Him build his free nation
I sang the blues in the cottonfield, hustlin' to make the daily yield
I sang the blues when he forced my woman to beg
Lord knows how I wished he was dead
I sang the blues on the run, ducking the dogs and dodging the gun
I sang the blues hanging from the tree in a desperate attempt to break free
I sang the blues when the sun went down, cursing the master when he wasn't around
I sang the blues in all these wars dying for some unknown cause
I sang the blues in a high tone, low moan, loud groan, soft grunt, hard funk
I sang the blues in land sea and air, about who when why and where
I sang the blues in church on sunday, slaving on monday, misused on tuesday, abused on wednesday, accused on thursday, fried alive on friday, and died on saturday.
Sho nuff singing the blues
I sang the blues in the summer, fall winter ~ Jalal Mansur Nuriddin
Hull quotes by Jalal Mansur Nuriddin
I admire Miken's exceptional engineering capabilities and was drawn to their passion for hockey and drive to be the best in all they do. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
That war has brought with it a truly incredible development of means of destruction and a terrifying prospect of rapid and almost limitless development in that direction. ~ Cordell Hull
Hull quotes by Cordell Hull
At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child's success is the positive involvement of parents. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
Sometimes this habit of using an entire book to tackle a single issue seems positively reckless. When the captain of your little pleasure cruiser spots a ferry hull looming over the horizon, do you really want him to reach for a copy of How to Avoid Huge Ships? Or would you rather that he kept his attention on the wheel? ~ Joel Rickett
Hull quotes by Joel Rickett
You can't listen to the news. You have to go with the facts. You need to use a logical approach and have the discipline to apply it. You must be able to control your emotions. ~ Blair Hull
Hull quotes by Blair Hull
The blessing which we associate with a life of refinement and cultivation can be made universal and must be made universal if they are to be permanent. ~ Jane Addams
Hull quotes by Jane Addams
I dreamed night after night that everyone in the world was dead excepting myself, and that upon me rested the responsibility of making a wagon wheel. ~ Jane Addams
Hull quotes by Jane Addams
My teeth have never been touched. Why did I tell you that? Knock on wood. I've got a few scars over the eyes, a couple on the chin, a few on the beak and one across the cheek. But my luck is running out. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
What makes it all worthwhile is we just play for the sheer enjoyment of entertaining people and ... make our families and the team we played on and the people watching, proud of what we did. ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
A lot of tragedy would be averted if people didn't confuse trust with love. I expect my clients to trust me. I really don't care if they hate me. ~ Brandon Hull ~ Jayden Hunter
Hull quotes by Jayden Hunter
I'm saying your name in the grocery store, I'm saying your name on the bridge at dawn. Your name like an animal covered with frost, your name like a music that's been transposed, a suit of fur, a coat of mud, a kick in the pants, a lungful of glass, the sails in wind and the slap of waves on the hull ... ~ Richard Siken
Hull quotes by Richard Siken
I just watched an episode where Steve Austin fights a Russian Venus probe that landed on Earth by mistake. As an expert in interplanetary travel, I can tell you there are no scientific inaccuracies in the story. It's quite common for probes to land on the wrong planet. Also, the probe's large, flat-panel hull is ideal for the high-pressure Venusian atmosphere. And, as we all know, probes often refuse to obey directives, choosing instead to attack humans on sight. So ~ Andy Weir
Hull quotes by Andy Weir
Friday 29th July, 2005 - I spend the entire night shift feeling like water is gushing into the hull of my boat and the only thing on hand to bail it out with is a Sylvanian Family rabbit's contact lens. ~ Adam Kay
Hull quotes by Adam Kay
I want to tell him to sue you for $100,000. I don't think $50,000 is enough. ~ Veta Louise Simmons
Hull quotes by Veta Louise Simmons
We are all damaged now,' said Arvida, watching the approach. 'All but you.' Yesugei sat back against the curve of the hull. 'No living thing is undamaged.' 'Yet you still smile. You still believe.' 'So do the rest. They need to remember, that is all. For now, all they see is slow defeat. They forget they have been... magnificent. They fight alone when all others are lost or manning walls far away. They come at enemy out of the glare of the sun. They have made him halt, turn back, come after us. They have forsaken the world they loved, have let it pass into ruin, all for this.' Yesugei thought of Qin Xa then, from whom there had never been a murmur of unbelief. 'They will remember, before the end. Other Legions have failed this test – they let their souls change. ~ Chris Wraight
Hull quotes by Chris Wraight
Hockey is its own game. It's completely different than all the other games, although it's getting way too close to soccer. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
They passed it late in the afternoon, their single sail stretched to bursting, clinker-built hull heeling well over, bow slicing up a column of spray that salted mouths, eyes and bodies. ~ Garth Nix
Hull quotes by Garth Nix
While I have some regrets that this is my last opportunity to deliver a State of the State address, I appreciate and am humbled by the opportunities this great state has given me. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
I'm patient with crossword puzzles and the most impatient golfer. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
I also want to thank Arizona citizens for their efforts at conserving energy last summer. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
If I told you that the big contract had nothing to do with my signing, Id be lying. It made the future secure for my family. ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
Like most bookworms I read so as not to be alone, which often annoys those who are trying to make conversation with me. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
My former wife made me a millionaire. I used to have three million dollars. ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
Nobody should live in an environment that's not healthy. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
Yes, our tree has an interesting shape. The center branches reflect the shape of the zero curve. When extreme parts of the tree are reached the branching pattern changes to accommodate the mean reversion. ~ John Hull
Hull quotes by John Hull
How about some commotion, a stir caused by the spreading news of my imminent demise? If the world would just wince momentarily at my passing. No need for flags at half-mast, but just a flinch, a brief pause before everyone returns to the busy business of life. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
Of all aspects of social misery nothing is so heartbreaking as unemployment. ~ Jane Addams
Hull quotes by Jane Addams
Was it a convent you escaped from, Miss Turner?" He turned the boat with a deft pull on one oar.
"Escaped?" Her heart knocked against her hidden purse. "I'm a governess, I told you. I'm not running away, from a convent or anywhere else. Why would you ask that?"
He chuckled. "Because you're staring at me as though you've never seen a man before."
Sophia's cheeks burned. She was staring. Worse, now she found herself powerless to turn away. What with the murky shadows of the tavern and the confusion of the quay, not to mention her own discomposure, she hadn't taken a good, clear look at his eyes until this moment.
They defied her mental palette utterly.
The pupils were ringed with a thin line of blue. Darker than Prussian, yet lighter than indigo. Perhaps matching that dearest of pigments-the one even her father's generous allowance did not permit-ultramarine. Yet within that blue circumference shifted a changing sea of color-green one moment, gray the next…in the shadow of a half-blink, hinting at blue.
He laughed again, and flinty sparks of amusement lit them.
Yes, she was still staring.
Forcing her gaze to the side, she saw their rowboat nearing the scraped hull of a ship. She cleared her throat and tasted brine. "Forgive me, Mr. Grayson. I'm only trying to make you out. I understood you to be the ship's captain."
"Well," he said, grasping a rope thrown down to him and securing it to the boat, "now you know I'm not."
"Might I ~ Tessa Dare
Hull quotes by Tessa Dare
[19:28] MAV: So far, so good. NASA put a lot of thought into the procedures. They work. That's not to say they're easy. I spent the last 3 days removing Hull Panel 19 and the front window. Even in Mars-g they're heavy motherfuckers. [19:29] JOHANSSEN: When we pick you up, I will make wild, passionate love to you. Prepare your body. [19:29] JOHANSSEN: I didn't type that! That was Martinez! I stepped away from the console for like 10 seconds! [19:29] MAV: I've really missed you guys. ~ Andy Weir
Hull quotes by Andy Weir
I was kind of smart enough when I was young, 14 or 15 years old, to realize that if you're ever going to do anything and step out of the shadow of your own dad - not only in hockey, but in life itself - you're going to have to learn you're Brett and not 'Bobby's son.' ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
If you're going to play hockey now, you have to be able to play. If you have the ability to fight and play, you're an unbelievable commodity. But if you can only fight, there might be six of those guys left in the league, and I can guarantee they're going fast. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
...the best poems were like little vessels that carry messages that can't be transported in any other way; miniature worlds like tiny paintings or Faberge eggs. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
Waves crack with wicked fury against me ship's hull while ocean currents rage as the full moon rises o're the sea."
(Cutthroat's Omen: A Crimson Dawn) ~ John Phillips
Hull quotes by John Phillips
Brett was damned good-looking. She wore a slip-over jersey sweater and a tweed skirt, and her hair was brushed back like a boy's. She started all that. She was built with curves like the hull of a racing yacht, and you missed none of it with that wool jersey. ~ Ernest Hemingway,
Hull quotes by Ernest Hemingway,
I wade through the rush of neglect and loss and sadness pouring through a hole in my hull. ~ Merri Lisa Johnson
Hull quotes by Merri Lisa Johnson
No wonder such a big part of growing old is learning to lower one's expectations, only we call that maturity and wisdom so as not to sound too defeatist. When you are young you demand ecstasy; when you are old you settle for anything short of agony. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
I love coming back into Chersonesus in the afternoon; the city is lit up by the sun beginning to set. The sound of the water rushing past the hull, and the sky is as blue as Helena's eyes."
"Did I hear a woman's name? ~ Destin Bays
Hull quotes by Destin Bays
In my experience, whatever happens clings to us like barnacles on the hull of a ship, slowing us slightly, both uglifying and giving us texture. You can scrape all you want, you can, if you have money, hire someone else to scrape, but the barnacles will come back or at least leave a blemish on the steel. ~ Nick Flynn
Hull quotes by Nick Flynn
Jane Addams, writing about her Twenty Years at Hull House, said, People did not want to hear about simple things. They wanted to hear about great things - simply told. ~ Fred Rogers
Hull quotes by Fred Rogers
You can't patch a hull when the whole boat's burned. ~ Robert Jordan
Hull quotes by Robert Jordan
There's a hole as big as Lucifer's arse in the hull where the powder barrels blew out, ~ Marsha Canham
Hull quotes by Marsha Canham
Government cannot be all things to all people. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
It is satisfying, and after a while he finds himself singing an old song: the same one he sang with Oldenburg in Broad Arrow Tower. He keeps time with his hammer, and draws out those notes that make the cargo-hold resonate. All round him, water seeps through the cracks between Minerva's hull-planks (for he is well below the water-line) and trickles down merrily into the bilge, and the four-man pumps take it away with a steady suck-and-hiss that's like the systole and diastole of a beating heart. ~ Neal Stephenson
Hull quotes by Neal Stephenson
I feel, first of all, very privileged that these people think enough of me that they made me commissioner. And it's almost like, as Yogi Berra said, 'deja vu all over again.' ~ Bobby Hull
Hull quotes by Bobby Hull
Please let me assure you, however, that the keen disappointment and regret which I feel in this regard serve only to enhance my profound appreciation of the great honor which you have done me; and my sincere gratitude for your generous action. ~ Cordell Hull
Hull quotes by Cordell Hull
The most interesting thing which I heard of, in this township of Hull, was an unfailing spring, whose locality was pointed out tome on the side of a distant hill, as I was panting along the shore, though I did not visit it. Perhaps, if I should go through Rome, it would be some spring on the Capitoline Hill I should remember the longest. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Hull quotes by Henry David Thoreau
To the Harbormaster"

I wanted to be sure to reach you;
though my ship was on the way it got caught
in some moorings. I am always tying up
and then deciding to depart. In storms and
at sunset, with the metallic coils of the tide
around my fathomless arms, I am unable
to understand the forms of my vanity
or I am hard alee with my Polish rudder
in my hand and the sun sinking. To
you I offer my hull and the tattered cordage
of my will. The terrible channels where
the wind drives me against the brown lips
of the reeds are not all behind me. Yet
I trust the sanity of my vessel; and
if it sinks, it may well be in answer
to the reasoning of the eternal voices,
the waves which have kept me from reaching you. ~ Frank O'Hara
Hull quotes by Frank O'Hara
Peace of mind is attained not by ignoring problems, but by solving them. ~ Raymond Hull
Hull quotes by Raymond Hull
I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull. He got a good estate by merchandise, and leaving off his trade, lived afterwards at York, from whence he had married my mother, whose relations were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but, by the usual corruption of words in England, we are now called - nay we call ourselves and write our name - Crusoe; and so my companions always called me. ~ Daniel Defoe
Hull quotes by Daniel Defoe
Cathedrals, luxury liners laden with souls, Holding to the east their hulls of stone. ~ W. H. Auden
Hull quotes by W. H. Auden
To be sure, no piece of social machinery, however well constructed, can be effective unless there is back of it a will and a determination to make it work. ~ Cordell Hull
Hull quotes by Cordell Hull
Because I don't look like I'm skating around as hard as Bobby Bassen doesn't mean my mind isn't working twice as hard as Bobby's mind. Just because I can't fight like Kelly Chase doesn't mean standing in front of the net getting cross-checked and slashed isn't toughness as well. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
The applause of a single human being is of great consequence. ~ Raymond Hull
Hull quotes by Raymond Hull
Arizona is a national leader in school choice with both charter schools and tuition tax credits giving parents and their children more school choices than ever before. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
I have noticed that, with few exceptions, men bungle their affairs. Everywhere I see incompetence rampant, incompetence triumphant...I have accepted the universality of incompetence. ~ Raymond Hull
Hull quotes by Raymond Hull
Better to sink with tempests raging o'er
Masts all dismantled and hull gaping wide
Than rest and rot on some unclouded shore
The idle plaything of the listless tide.

Better the grime of battle on the brow,
With grim defeat to crush thy dying hand
Than through long years of peace to tyrant bow
Or dwell captive in a strangers land.

Better the castle with beleaguered gate,
By battle's lightning shivered in a day
Than peaceful walls in pomp of sullen state,
Through centuries sinking to a dull decay.

Better resolve to win thy heart's desire,
And striving bravely, die in the endeavor
Than have the embers of some smothered fire
Lie smouldering in thy saddened soul forever. ~ Sam Davis
Hull quotes by Sam Davis
Perhaps nothing is so fraught with significance as the human hand, this oldest tool with which man has dug his way from savagery, and with which he is constantly groping forward. ~ Jane Addams
Hull quotes by Jane Addams
No other country on earth could have provided such tremendous opportunities and we should never take the privilege of our citizenship for granted. ~ Jane D. Hull
Hull quotes by Jane D. Hull
Then, all of a sudden, there was a great black hull, stretching farther than my eye could see. ~ Ellen Emerson White
Hull quotes by Ellen Emerson White
I was glad that it rained. Not just a drizzle but big furious drops that lashed against us and danced at our feet. Our discomfort seemed somehow appropriate, all of us standing there with tears and rain washing down our taut faces, overcome by so many names. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
In the interest rate area, traders have for a long time used a version of what is known as Black's model for European bond options; another version of the same model for caps and floors; and yet another version of the same model for European swap options. ~ John Hull
Hull quotes by John Hull
Craft the finest arrow
Forage jungles for straightest shaft
Forge sharpest head of glass
Pluck feathers of the wisest crow
Without the simplest archer and bow
Without a mark that's true
Useless
Craft the finest vessel
Fell the jungle's strongest mast
Build the world's mightiest hull
A flag the crown of all seas you can sew
Without the simplest oarsmen to row
Without a port that's true
Useless ~ Dylan Thomas McCall
Hull quotes by Dylan Thomas McCall
American Casualties on the USS Maine

Two hundred & Sixty Six American sailors were killed when the American battleship, USS Maine, exploded and sank in Havana harbor after a massive explosion of undetermined origin. The first Board of Inquiry regarding the incident stated that a mine placed on or near the hull had sunk the ship. Later studies determined that it was more likely heat from smoldering coal in the ship's bunker that set off the explosion in an adjoining ammunition locker.

In February 1898, the recovered bodies of the American sailors who died on the battleship were interred in the Colon Cemetery, in Havana. Nearly two years later they were exhumed and now 163 of the crew that were killed in 1898 are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, near the USS Maine Memorial.

The beautiful monument shown is located in Central Park West in New York City. ~ Hank Bracker
Hull quotes by Hank Bracker
I see her again: her face wet with tears, her eyes searching mine. Slowly, very slowly, I reach my hands out and trace my fingertips along her skin, first down her neck, so warm and fragile, then across her breasts and down along the curves of her hips. Then with all my strength I wrap my arms around her and pull her toward me, but she is gone. ~ Jonathan Hull
Hull quotes by Jonathan Hull
I bet you there's a lot of guys who dream of having a girl that fine. ~ Brett Hull
Hull quotes by Brett Hull
Tulsa has world-class opera and Starbucks, and a religious conservatism that rules public life. ~ Anne Hull
Hull quotes by Anne Hull
The beauty of the flute was in its simplicity, in its resemblance to the human voice. It always sounded clear. It sounded alone. The piano, on the other hand, was a network of parts - a ship, with its strings like rigging, its case a hull, its lifted lid a sail. Kestrel always thought that the piano didn't sound like a single instrument but a twinned one, with its low and high halves merging together or pulling apart. ~ Marie Rutkoski
Hull quotes by Marie Rutkoski
Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. 'Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I'm going to get Wylan's ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost. ~ Leigh Bardugo
Hull quotes by Leigh Bardugo
Selfishness sinks ships: friendships, partnerships, relationships, championships, even leaderships. Like an iceberg tearing through the hull of an ocean liner, selfishness will inevitably send all of those ships plummeting to the depths of the abyss. Selfishness sinks ships. ~ Lance Loya
Hull quotes by Lance Loya
Visiting a dying son - The seductive whirlpool of memory I ~ Ruth Hull Chatlien
Hull quotes by Ruth Hull Chatlien
Only Percy was having any luck. He stood by the centre mast, his hands extended like he was on a tightrope. Every time the ship tilted, he pushed in the opposite direction and the hull stabilized. He summoned giant fists of water from the ocean to slam into the larger waves before they could reach the deck, so it looked like the ocean was hitting itself repeatedly in the face. ~ Rick Riordan
Hull quotes by Rick Riordan
If we taught children to speak, they'd never learn. ~ William Hull
Hull quotes by William Hull
I do have nightmares. So what? I wouldn't trade places with any of the f**kers I killed. Am I afraid of Hell? No. I've been. It's worse than advertised but not as bad as imagined. ~ Brandon Hull ~ Jayden Hunter
Hull quotes by Jayden Hunter
Launching a newspaper without a coherent idea of how you're going to promote it, or get it to people who might want to read it, is like launching a boat without a rudder or an engine ... or a hull, now that I think about it. ~ Charlie Pierce
Hull quotes by Charlie Pierce
The Lusitania remained a passenger liner, but with the hull of a battleship. ~ Erik Larson
