Who would have thought God would send a bad man and a sheriff just to save Prince? ~ Debra Holland
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Debra Holland
We're all forced to lead many lives simultaneously. We do it out of necessity, not choice. We don't make a virtue of it. ~ Ashok Ferrey
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Ashok Ferrey
Often, people build stories in their mind which have no basis in the contours of reality. Those which build these images, are building such images which are based on their relatively limited sense of understanding about the particular subject or person. This is a "fill in the blank" reality, which often manifests itself into the hearts and the minds of those who have a "fill in the blank" mindset, not the person with the here said reality.
The universe is designed in a way that reflects itself, just like a mirror, showing you exactly who you are to yourself, not who others are. Your largest and most concealed insecurities have their way of presenting themselves to you in a fashion that is relative to your self designed way of communication.
This short writing is a reminder that your preconceived notions on a particular subject or person, are a construct of your inner mind and emotional-relational well being and not of others. This is one of the largest fundamental truths in which you must have large insight to carefully watch who and what you massacre with your personal thoughts.
Having a keen sense of control on this subject will lead you to enlightenment in many platforms of life. ~ Will Barnes
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Will Barnes
While there may not be a book in every one of us, there is so often a damned good short story. ~ Jeffrey Archer
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Jeffrey Archer
[Red Dirt Marijuana] contains most of the great short stories in English that are not by Mr. Hemingway or Mr. O'Hara. ~ Robert Anton Wilson
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Robert Anton Wilson
Most conversations drift. You need to steer. Assume the task of cutting boring threads of conversation and of offering new options. Encourage people to tell stories they mention in passing. Don't wait to be invited into a group, introduce yourself. In short: lead. ~ Charlie Houpert
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Charlie Houpert
Will Cato's alien buddies come en masse and invade Earth? He's not sure but he'll try to keep humanity in the loop. ~ John Hopkins
Holiday Short Stories quotes by John Hopkins
Debasement was limited at first to one's own territory. It was then found that one could do better by taking bad coins across the border of neighboring municipalities and exchanging them for good with ignorant common people, bringing back the good coins and debasing them again. More and more mints were established. Debasement accelerated in hyper-fashion until a halt was called after the subsidiary coins became practically worthless, and children played with them in the street, much as recounted in Leo Tolstoy's short story, Ivan the Fool. ~ Charles P. Kindleberger
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Charles P. Kindleberger
The point I'm trying to make is that I am the most unpleasant, rude, ignorant, and all-around obnoxious arsehole that anyone could possibly have the misfortune to meet. I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the happy. So if I didn't understand I was being asked to be the best man, it is because I never expected to be anybody's best friend, and certainly not the best friend of the bravest and kindest and wisest human being I have ever had the good fortune of knowing. John, I am a ridiculous man, redeemed only by the warmth and constancy of your friendship. But as I am apparently your best friend, I cannot congratulate you on your choice of companion.

Actually, now I can. Mary, when I say you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I am capable. John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss - so sorry again about that last one. So know this: Today, you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you have saved. In short, the two people who love you most in all this world. And I know I speak for Mary as well when I say we will never let you down, and we have a lifetime ahead to prove that. Now, on to some funny stories about John... ~ Steven Moffat
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Steven Moffat
I tend to be more of a novel writer. In fact, some of my novels started out as short stories, and I just got carried away! I think some of my best writing is in the short story form, but novels come more naturally to me. ~ Bruce Coville
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Bruce Coville
Now and then I am asked as to "what books a statesman should read," and my answer is, poetry and novels - including short stories under the head of novels. I don't mean that he should read only novels and modern poetry. If he cannot also enjoy the Hebrew prophets and the Greek dramatists, he should be sorry. He ought to read interesting books on history and government, and books of science and philosophy; and really good books on these subjects are as enthralling as any fiction ever written in prose or verse. ~ Theodore Roosevelt
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Theodore Roosevelt
You know, the world is all about balance. You lose something here ... maybe somebody else picks it up over there. ~ Natasha Larry
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Natasha Larry
He admired bears because everyone was afraid to disturb them while they slept and fish were so in love with bears that they jumper right into their mouths. He ate meat and never felt bad about it unless he saw how the animal was slaughtered or if the meat was not cooked properly but he thought thrice about killing bus. ~ Robb Todd
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Robb Todd
As though she had entered a fable, as though she were no more than words crawling along a dry page, or as though she were becoming that page itself, that surface on which her story would be written and across which there blew a hot and merciless wind, turning her body to papyrus, her skin to parchment, her soul to paper. ~ Salman Rushdie
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Salman Rushdie
How does a person exist after their world has been torn to pieces? It must be possible. People do it all the time. After all the floods and tornadoes and wars that have hit the world with inexorable violence, people somehow scrape up their lives and begin again. ~ R.L. Martinez
Holiday Short Stories quotes by R.L. Martinez
I have only read very classic traditional English ghost stories, other than Henry James, who wrote some magnificent short ones as well as the longer 'Turn of the Screw.' He, Dickens, and M.R. James are my influences. ~ Susan Hill
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Susan Hill
I have been tossing around the idea of writing some non-fiction. Maybe a collection of short stories about my experience being a mom and how not to be perfect. ~ Melissa Peterman
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Melissa Peterman
The space between the private and the public is the nexus of the personal and the social, if not political. It's where we meet the strong or subtle cultural censors who attempt to define what community, race, class, or gender can or cannot speak, to tell us which stories are told and valued and which are not. In short, it's where we're reminded of the power of personal stories and the power of the storyteller. ~ John Capecci And Timothy Cage
Holiday Short Stories quotes by John Capecci And Timothy Cage
Some find it hard to write emotively. I've had some people say to me that they simply cannot. There are two ways to try and achieve it, to either draw upon your own lives experiences or pushing your imagination into those circumstances and feeling how your heart reacts.
When I write emotively much of it comes from my own experiences and thoughts. But for some things it is not because I have experienced every emotion in my short life time already. It means I am able to imagine in my mind a given situation and feel how my heart reacts to those thoughts. Forcing myself deep into the moment of fantasy and not fearing how I feel. Some writers rely on this skill, not picturing it in their mind they are feeling it as though with their own heart even though the situation is not one they have found themselves to have been in. I believe I struggle with this, I challenge myself in some of my stories and writing that I do but I find myself favouring writing about what I know, what I have felt in my own life, love being most favoured but also excitement, worry, fear and of course sorrow. Many people will be happy to write about joy and happiness but would never write of their fears and weaknesses, feeling that for others to see you so exposed in a raw state of emotion adds to the agony of the original event you are writing about. Especially those who want to be seen as strong all the time, they worry that so show any emotion other than strength of positivity is weakness. This façade ~ Raven Lockwood
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Raven Lockwood
Our passing interrupted the road crossing, and the crowd bunched on both sides waited for us to go by as we all waited for the war to go by, thinking we can suspend or postpone living and not knowing that in war the heart grows older than it does in dreams ~ Dan Davin
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Dan Davin
You can take the barbarian out of the tavern, but he can take the blood out of your body. ~ Greg X. Graves
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Greg X. Graves
In general, short stories are less read than before, they're less published than before and, not surprisingly, they're less taught than before. ~ Lorin Stein
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Lorin Stein
Snuffy and the Bull is one of several short stories from a time in our history which has been woven into the quilt of America and found within the eclectic tapestry of our culture. ~ Regine' Ivory-Barlow
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Regine' Ivory-Barlow
One also, in our milieu, simply didn't meet enough Americans to form an opinion. And when one did - this was in the days of crew-cuts and short-legged pants - they, too, often really did sport crew-cuts and trousers that mysteriously ended several inches short of the instep. Why was that? It obviously wasn't poverty. A colleague of my father's had a daughter who got herself married and found that an American friend she had met on holiday had offered to pay the whole cost of the nuptial feast. I forget the name of this paladin, but he had a crew-cut and amputated trouser-bottoms and a cigar stub and he came from a place called Yonkers, which seemed to me a ridiculous name to give to a suburb. (I, who had survived Crapstone… ) Anyway, once again one received a Henry Jamesian impression of brash generosity without overmuch refinement. There was a boy at my boarding school called Warren Powers Laird Myers, the son of an officer stationed at one of the many U.S. Air Force bases in Cambridgeshire. Trousers at The Leys School were uniform and regulation, but he still managed to show a bit of shin and to buzz-cut his hair. 'I am not a Yankee,' he informed me (he was from Norfolk, Virginia). 'I am a CON-federate.' From what I was then gleaning of the news from Dixie, this was unpromising. In our ranks we also had Jamie Auchincloss, a sprig of the Kennedy-Bouvier family that was then occupying the White House. His trousers managed to avoid covering his ankles also, though the fact that ~ Christopher Hitchens
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Christopher Hitchens
Then why are you still here?" I ask. I stand up and her gun follows me. I welcome its bullets just to see if I could survive.
"Masochism."
"I don't know what that means."
"It means I like my own pain."
"That doesn't make sense."
"I'm human. You think we ever make sense? ~ Tessa Maurer
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Tessa Maurer
I love stories. But I don't distinguish so much between a short story and a novel. Personally, when I sit down to read a novel or a Chekhov story, I'm seeking the same thing: I'm seeking that same rich portrayal of life in words. ~ Jhumpa Lahiri
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Jhumpa Lahiri
Much contemporary verse reads like failed short-short stories rather than failed poetry. ~ Alice Fulton
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Alice Fulton
I write short stories when a little idea occurs to me, that I know isn't a part of a novel that will stand by itself and should be concentrated. ~ Roddy Doyle
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Roddy Doyle
I would say that all short stories have mystery naturally built into them. ~ Dan Chaon
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Dan Chaon
Everything Sholom Aleichem talks about in his plays and his short stories is about people, family, man's relationship with his God, the breaking down of tradition. ~ Norman Jewison
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Norman Jewison
Pier 5 in Brooklyn was within a short walking distance from the subway station and in the distance the masts and funnel of my new ship could be seen. The S/S African Sun was a C-4 cargo ship built in 1942, for the war effort. Not even 15 years old, the ship looked as good as new. Farrell Lines took good care of their ships and it showed. There was always a lot of activity prior to departure and this time was no exception. We were expected to depart prior to dusk and there were things to do.
I got into my working uniform and leaving my sea bag on my bunk headed for the bridge. When I passed the open door of the Captain's room he summoned me in. "Welcome aboard Mr. Mate. I've heard good things about you!" We talked briefly about his expectations. Introducing himself as Captain Brian, he seemed friendly enough and I felt that I got off to a good start.
As the ship's Third Officer, most frequently known as the Third Mate, my first order of business was to place my license into the frame alongside those of the other deck officers. I must admit that doing so gave me a certain feeling of pride and belonging. With only an hour to go before our scheduled departure I called the engine room and gave them permission to jack over the engine; a term used to engage the engine, so as to slowly turn the screw or propeller. ~ Hank Bracker
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Hank Bracker
We're living in a tremendously new landscape, and the possibility of what can be created is immense. These tools of the moving image have a relatively short history in art, and what we can do with them is still largely unknown. We are still innovating and finding ways to tell stories. ~ Doug Aitken
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Doug Aitken
I had come suddenly to pity them, for I understood how innocent and natural it was for them to behave abominably, and with such abominable results. They were doing their best to live like people invented in story books. This was the reason Americans shot each other so often: It was a convenient literary device for ending short stories and books. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Kurt Vonnegut
'Monkeys' is made up of nine short stories that tell an overall story. 'Folly' is a series of vignettes all put together to tell a larger story. In 'Lust and Other Stories,' there are nine stories - three, three, three; the beginnings of love, the middles, and the afters. ~ Susan Minot
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Susan Minot
Don't wait for success, but for the respect and interest of those who read you. At the start it could be a classmate, someone who shares your interests. Before sending off the manuscript for a novel to a publishing house, it would be a good idea to try writing short stories, and publishing them in a local magazine. ~ Dacia Maraini
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Dacia Maraini
I'm looking for something new to believe in that isn't the way people yearn at night in the city. ~ Constance Renfrow
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Constance Renfrow
Your body is a jewel box.....the jewel is your soul ~ Kay Boyle
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Kay Boyle
On short stories:
something glimpsed from the corner of the eye, in passing. ~ V.S. Pritchett
Holiday Short Stories quotes by V.S. Pritchett
She kissed him first, and all the rest followed. ~ Alice Hoffman
Holiday Short Stories quotes by Alice Hoffman
A short story is a writer's way of thinking through experience ... Journalism aims at accuracy, but fiction's aim is truth. The writer distorts reality in the interest of a larger truth. ~ John L'Heureux
