We're not going to leave you here! I'd rather not add hitchhiking to the list of new experiences for Runaway Andy." - Greg ~ H.R. Willaston
Hitchhiking quotes by H.R. Willaston
The behaviour of the English people I had run into was making it very difficult to nail down a theory that the reason my trip so far had been such a bizarre success, was that Irish people were crazy. One Englishman had spent a morning on the telephone trying to organise a helicopter to take me out to an island, when a boat was leaving only a few yards away, and here was another, making a two-hour round trip for no reason other than to lend a helping hand. Two of the more eccentric pieces of behaviour hadn't been performed by the Irish, but by my fellow countrymen. However, both Andy and Tony had embraced wholeheartedly a love of the Irish way of living life. ~ Tony Hawks
Hitchhiking quotes by Tony Hawks
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
Are you gay, Cherie?
Me, No… I'm not anything… I-I mean I prefer not to indulge, I stammered.
"Really... how do you mean?"
Well love has been an elusive story, like a fairytale adults tell children but I have never known any of it to be true. In reality it reminds me of religion. I am not sure God is real either, if God is real why do so many innocents suffer?
Innocents suffer because it is their destiny to suffer.
What? What does that mean?" I'm annoyed.
God has nothing to do with it. We are born into this world to experience all that is not God-like, so we can then be inspired to reach for higher spiritual goals.
I have never thought of it that way before. If that is so then I must be preparing for sainthood. Am I to think that all of my suffering as a child has been to prepare me for greatness? ~ Darwun St. James
Hitchhiking quotes by Darwun St. James
Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
I was a college dropout, hitchhiking across the Midwest. That was part of the old, adventurous spirit. ~ Tom Brokaw
Hitchhiking quotes by Tom Brokaw
a couple years prior we were hitchhiking to a gig with no gear. Now we were on a fucking tour bus. We could eat for free at a catered backstage buffet. Life was good. ~ Duff McKagan
Hitchhiking quotes by Duff McKagan
I came along and was a teenager in the Depression, and nobody had jobs. So I went out hitchhiking, when I met a man named Woody Guthrie. He was the single biggest part of my education. ~ Pete Seeger
Hitchhiking quotes by Pete Seeger
Down the hall came the wife. She was glorious, burning. She didn't know yet that her husband was dead. We knew. That's what gave her such power over us. The doctor took her into a room with a desk at the end of the hall, and from under the closed door a slab of brilliance radiated as if, by some stupendous process, diamonds were being incinerated in there. What a pair of lungs! She shrieked as I imagined an eagle would shriek. It felt wonderful to be alive to hear it! I've gone looking for that feeling everywhere. ~ Denis Johnson
Hitchhiking quotes by Denis Johnson
Life! Don't talk to me about life! ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
I really didn't have any bad hitchhiking experiences. The only bad experiences were standing by the road for 10 hours. I never thought I'd get a ride with a ministers wife or a coalminer or a Republican elected official. It was all pleasant surprises. The only drag was the waiting. ~ John Waters
Hitchhiking quotes by John Waters
Do you always talk in driving metaphors?"
"I'm a hitchhiking ghost. It was this, or talk in Disney metaphors. ~ Seanan McGuire
Hitchhiking quotes by Seanan McGuire
Oh dear,' says God, 'I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
Life," said Marvin dolefully, "loathe it or ignore it, you can't like it. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
Wet towel under the door,' said Barry. 'It's what you do when you're smoking weed in a hotel and you don't want everyone calling security. You're always supposed to have a towel. I read about it in a guide for hitchhiking through the galaxy. ~ Christopher Moore
Hitchhiking quotes by Christopher Moore
Tourists - have some fun with New york's hard-boiled cabbies. When you get to your destination, say to your driver, "Pay? I was hitchhiking." ~ David Letterman
Hitchhiking quotes by David Letterman
Sanctuary cities are a lot like hitchhiking. And the abstract, it feels really good until you feel dead. ~ Greg Gutfeld
Hitchhiking quotes by Greg Gutfeld
I was hitchhiking the other day and a hearse stopped. I said, 'No thanks, I'm not going that far. ~ Steven Wright
Hitchhiking quotes by Steven Wright
And yep, here's yet one more heterosexual man who loves his wife. I'm telling you, it's a trend! Women I know who are always complaining they can never meet a good straight man - maybe you're living in the wrong part of the country. Maybe you need to hitchhike. Route 70 West could be the path to a great marriage. Go ahead, stick out your thumb for romance. ~ John Waters
Hitchhiking quotes by John Waters
Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the West is the best." And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual pilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.
Alexander Supertramp, May 1992 ~ Christopher McCandless
Hitchhiking quotes by Christopher McCandless
The exciting isolation of leaning against the wind on the highway hitchhiking, waiting for someone to stop and offer me a lift, perhaps to a town three miles down the road, perhaps to new friendship, perhaps to death. ~ Luke Rhinehart
Hitchhiking quotes by Luke Rhinehart
Look here and know who you are. Instantly you will find freedom, and this suffering--hitchhiking from womb to womb--will instantly stop. The only way is to look within. ~ H.W.L. Poonja
Hitchhiking quotes by H.W.L. Poonja
At age 22 I set what I insist is an all-time record for distance hitchhiking in Bermuda shorts: 3,700 miles in three weeks. ~ Hunter S. Thompson
Hitchhiking quotes by Hunter S. Thompson
The gallant captain vacated his cabin for her, and Manna changed her role from cook to chaperone. All most correct. But it was hardly the done thing to cadge a lift on a torpedo boat. Yet she did it twice in a lifetime. ~ Mary Allsebrook
Hitchhiking quotes by Mary Allsebrook
Demons loved hitchhiking about as much as they loved picking up hitchhikers. ~ Seth Skorkowsky
Hitchhiking quotes by Seth Skorkowsky
I read my copy of On the Road and dug the scenery whizzing past. On the Road is a semi-autobiographical novel about Jack Kerouac, a druggy, hard-drinking writer who goes hitchhiking around America, working crummy jobs, howling through the streets at night, meeting people and parting ways. Hipsters, sad-faced hobos, con-men, muggers, scumbags and angels. There's not really a plot -- Kerouac supposedly wrote it in three weeks on a long roll of paper, stoned out of his mind -- only a bunch of amazing things, one thing happening after another. He makes friends with self-destructing people like Dean Moriarty, who get him involved in weird schemes that never really work out, but still it works out, if you know what I mean.

There was a rhythm to the words, it was luscious, I could hear it being read aloud in my head. It made me want to lie down in the bed of a pickup truck and wake up in a dusty little town somewhere in the central valley on the way to LA, one of those places with a gas station and a diner, and just walk out into the fields and meet people and see stuff and do stuff. ~ Cory Doctorow
Hitchhiking quotes by Cory Doctorow
The "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" hitchhiker really made people never want to hitchhike again - the hitcher, the show. Hitchhiking is always vaguely sexual. ~ John Waters
Hitchhiking quotes by John Waters
He was slumped in the back, gazing out of the window, as though his parents were two people who had picked him up hitchhiking, connected to him merely by chance and proximity. ~ J.K. Rowling
Hitchhiking quotes by J.K. Rowling
I was hitchhiking to Washington to an anti-war demonstration in 1971, and I was in an accident, and that's how I became disabled; that's how I came into disability, in a sense. ~ Simi Linton
Hitchhiking quotes by Simi Linton
When I came to the last line of 'Car Crash While Hitchhiking,' I read it as a pitiless statement of indifference: a refusal to warn the family of their impending collision, a refusal to help when miraculously spared, a refusal to act on the empathy hiding behind the story's language. ~ Anthony Marra
Hitchhiking quotes by Anthony Marra
I think a high school girl hitchhiking is stupid. It was dangerous then and it's dangerous now. ~ Bo Derek
Hitchhiking quotes by Bo Derek
With me, something different and deep, in bright focus and pointing the way, arrived in the practice of hitchhiking. I am the spirit and the heart of hitchhiking, I am its cortex and its medulla, I am its foundation and its culmination, I am the jewel in its lotus. ~ Tom Robbins
Hitchhiking quotes by Tom Robbins
After I graduated from college, while traveling around Europe, hitchhiking, doing the tourist thing, I went into a church in Dublin. ~ Frederica Mathewes-Green
Hitchhiking quotes by Frederica Mathewes-Green
The one thing I miss is hitchhiking. Now there's no more of that. When's the last time you saw a hitchhiker? It's not that I consider it a great sport, but it was my way of seeing the country. The open road, especially in the western United States, is still very pristine, but everything else around it has changed. ~ Edward Ruscha
Hitchhiking quotes by Edward Ruscha
Through the appropriation of public spaces and resources into the logic of the marketplace, individuals are dispossessed of many collective forms of mutual support or sharing. A simple and pervasive cooperative practice like hitchhiking had to be inverted into a risk-filled act with fearful, even lethal consequences. Now it has reached the point of laws being enacted in parts of the United States that criminalize giving food to the homeless or to undocumented immigrants. ~ Jonathan Crary
Hitchhiking quotes by Jonathan Crary
Funny, how just when you think life can't possibly get any worse it suddenly does. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
The Beat Generation, that was a vision that we had, John Clellon Holmes and I, and Allen Ginsberg in an even wilder way, in the late forties, of a generation of crazy, illuminated hipsters suddenly rising and roaming America, serious, bumming and hitchhiking everywhere, ragged, beatific, beautiful in an ugly graceful new way--a vision gleaned from the way we had heard the word 'beat' spoken on streetcorners on Times Square and in the Village, in other cities in the downtown city night of postwar America--beat, meaning down and out but full of intense conviction--We'd even heard old 1910 Daddy Hipsters of the streets speak the word that way, with a melancholy sneer--It never meant juvenile delinquents, it meant characters of a special spirituality who didn't gang up but were solitary Bartlebies staring out the dead wall window of our civilization--the subterraneans heroes who'd finally turned from the 'freedom' machine of the West and were taking drugs, digging bop, having flashes of insight, experiencing the 'derangement of the senses,' talking strange, being poor and glad, prophesying a new style for American culture, a new style (we thought), a new incantation--The same thing was almost going on in the postwar France of Sartre and Genet and what's more we knew about it--But as to the actual existence of a Beat Generation, chances are it was really just an idea in our minds--We'd stay up 24 hours drinking cup after cup of black coffee, playing record after record of Wardell ~ Jack Kerouac
Hitchhiking quotes by Jack Kerouac
They had picked up Julie's scent hit wolfsbane lost her and found her trail again at the crumbling Highway 23 except it was two hours old and mixed with horse scents. She was hitchhiking. Great. Awesome. At least she always carried a knife with her.
When I relayed this to Curran he shrugged and said, If she kills anybody we'll make it go away. ~ Ilona Andrews
Hitchhiking quotes by Ilona Andrews
Hitchhiking was such a pure form of existence. You'd wake up in the morning, and you'd have no idea what your day was going to be. And that's something I've never been able to shake. I loved that. ~ John Hawkes
Hitchhiking quotes by John Hawkes
Great artists make the roads; good teachers and good companions can point them out. But there ain't no free rides, baby. ~ Ursula K. Le Guin
Hitchhiking quotes by Ursula K. Le Guin
When you are constantly prevailing upon the kindness of strangers-as a hitchhiker must-it keeps you in a positive frame of mind. Call it Zen and the Art of Hitchhiking. The Way of the Lift. The chrysanthemum and the Thumb. Heady on beer and the sound of my own voice, the aphorisms spilled out unchecked. ~ Will Ferguson
Hitchhiking quotes by Will Ferguson
My wife of 57 years was buried today beside our son, who died in 1941 as a result of a truck accident when he was hitchhiking to take a job. She has longed for him all these years, and now she is with him. I know they are embraced in happiness. ~ Terry Kay
Hitchhiking quotes by Terry Kay
I had abandoned Elana; I deserved her uncertainty. I closed my eyes and focused on her touch. Perhaps she wouldn't have understood had I tried to explain it to her, but to me Elana was not only Elana--she was the sad-eyed love of mine who used to bag groceries at Woodley's in Buffalo; she was the sweet one who always sat across from me on the city bus in Niagara Falls; she was the girl I'd picked up hitchhiking in Mobile and dropped off in New Orleans, brash, full of sarcastic humor, but truly lonely and scared; she was the one I'd nabbed pinching Newports for her dad from the Marathon station I'd worked at in Bakersfield (I'd softened and paid for the pack myself); yes, she was the girl playing basketball with all the boys in the park, collecting cans by the side of the road, keeping secret pet kittens in an empty boxcar in the woods, walking alone at night through the rail yards, teaching her little sisters how to kiss, reading out loud to herself, so absorbed by the story, singing sadly in the tub, building a fort from the junked cars out in the meadow, by herself in the front row at the black-and-white movies or in the alley, gazing at an eddy of cigarette stubs and trash and fall leaves, smoking her first cigarette at dusk by a pile of dead brush in the desert, then wishing at the stars-she was all of them, and she was so much more that was just her that I still didn't know. ~ Davy Rothbart
Hitchhiking quotes by Davy Rothbart
I keep very close in touch with the fans - to see what they like. I'm very in touch with my audience; I get older and they get younger, which I think is the ultimate compliment. I think hitchhiking brought a few of them out! Even though all young people have never hitchhiked, all people my age did at one point in their life, they just don't do it now. ~ John Waters
Hitchhiking quotes by John Waters
The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. ~ Douglas Adams
Hitchhiking quotes by Douglas Adams
I have nowhere to go and no way to get there. But at least I'm not hitchhiking, because my thumbs are too proud - and too busy sexting your mom. ~ Jarod Kintz
Hitchhiking quotes by Jarod Kintz
Homecomer, hitcher, phantom rider,
White lady wants what's been denied her,
Gather-grim knows what you fear the most,
But best keep away from the crossroads ghost.

Talk to the poltergeist, talk to the haunt,
Talk to the routewitch if it's what you want.
Reaper's in the parlor, seizer's in a host,
But you'd best keep away from the crossroads ghost.

- common clapping rhyme among the ever-lasters of the twilight ~ Seanan McGuire
Hitchhiking quotes by Seanan McGuire
When I got out of school, I spent two years just hitchhiking around. Every time I met some old farmer who could play banjo, I got him to teach me a lick or two. Little by little, I put it together. ~ Pete Seeger
