I said to my mother, Henry VII is interesting. No he's not, my mother said. ~ Hilary Mantel
Henry Vii quotes by Hilary Mantel
My parents were not one for photography, and my dad earned the nickname 'Henry VII' for his ability to slice the heads off of subjects for his snaps ~ Mark Barrowcliffe
Henry Vii quotes by Mark Barrowcliffe
Sir Thomas More, son of Sir John More, a justice of the King's Bench, was born in 1478, in Milk Street, in the city of London. After his earlier education at St. Anthony's School, in Threadneedle Street, he was placed, as a boy, in the household of Cardinal John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord Chancellor. It was not unusual for persons of wealth or influence and sons of good families to be so established together in a relation of patron and client. The youth wore his patron's livery, and added to his state. The patron used, afterwards, his wealth or influence in helping his young client forward in the world. Cardinal Morton had been in earlier days that Bishop of Ely whom Richard III. sent to the Tower; was busy afterwards in hostility to Richard; and was a chief adviser of Henry VII., who in 1486 made him Archbishop of Canterbury, and nine months afterwards Lord Chancellor. Cardinal Morton - of talk at whose table there are recollections in "Utopia" - delighted in the quick wit of young Thomas More. He once said, "Whoever shall live to try it, shall see this child here waiting at table prove a notable and rare man. ~ Thomas More
Henry Vii quotes by Thomas More
In a great affliction there is no light either in the stars or in the sun; for when the inward light is fed with fragrant oil; there can be no darkness though the sun should go out. But when, like a sacred lamp in the temple, the inward light is quenched, there is no light outwardly, though a thousand suns should preside in the heavens. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
Mama and I would go to a funeral and she'd stand up to read the dead person's eulogy. She made the ignorant and ugly sound like scholars and movie stars, turned the mean and evil into saints and angels. She knew what people had meant to be in their hearts, not what the world had forced them to become. She knew the ways in which working too hard for paltry wages could turn you mean and cold, could kill the thing that made you laugh. ~ Henry Louis Gates
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Louis Gates
For fidelity, devotion, love, many a two-legged animal is below the dog and the horse. Happy would it be for thousands of people if they could stand at last before the Judgment Seat and say, I have loved as truly and have lived as decently as my dog, and yet we call them only brutes. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
The infinite variety in the properties of the solid materials we find in the world is really the expression of the infinite variety of the ways in which the atoms and molecules can be tied together, and of the strength of those ties. ~ William Henry Bragg
Henry Vii quotes by William Henry Bragg
Some men a forward motion love, But I by backward steps would move, And when this dust falls to the urn In that state I came, return. ~ Henry Vaughan
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Vaughan
I was always interested in curing the brain. ~ Henry Markram
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Markram
The face of nature and civilization in this our country is to a certain point a very sufficient literary field. But it will yield its secrets only to a really grasping imagination. To write well and worthily of American things one need even more than elsewhere to be a master. ~ Henry James
Henry Vii quotes by Henry James
How beautifully is it ordered, that as many thousands work for one, so must every individual bring his labor to make the whole! The highest is not to despise the lowest, nor the lowest to envy the highest; each must live in all and by all. Who will not work neither shall he eat. So God has ordered that men, being in need of each other, should learn to love each other, and bear each other's burdens. ~ George Augustus Henry Sala
Henry Vii quotes by George Augustus Henry Sala
The Lord made it very clear at the start of this last dispensation that we were to take the gospel to all the world ... Whatever our age, capacity, Church calling, or location, we are as one called to the work to help Him in His harvest of souls. ~ Henry B. Eyring
Henry Vii quotes by Henry B. Eyring
We should thank God for being with us, not ask Him to be with us (this is always given!). ~ Henry Blackaby
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Blackaby
As if men did not die fast enough, they are ingenious at finding out ways to destroy one another. ~ Matthew Henry
Henry Vii quotes by Matthew Henry
I've noticed that Henry needs an incredible amount of physical activity all the time in order to be happy. It's like hanging out with a greyhound. ~ Audrey Niffenegger
Henry Vii quotes by Audrey Niffenegger
Passing into higher forms of desire, that which slumbered in the plant, and fitfully stirred in the beast, awakes in the man. ~ Henry George
Henry Vii quotes by Henry George
There are those of poor spirit and there are those of great spirit. None are without it but the flame flickers pretty low in some cases. The majority of people seem to be nothing but a little flickering flame. You know that when you match them against an individual who is all fire, all radiance. Those in whom the flame of the spirit runs high are extraordinary examples of human beings. ~ Henry Miller
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Miller
There is no such thing as no chance. ~ Henry Ford
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Ford
Clarence Darrow was a unique and courageous man. Several of my favourite actors have played Darrow ... Henry Fonda, Orson Welles and Spencer Tracy. ~ Kevin Spacey
Henry Vii quotes by Kevin Spacey
Don't push me I've got a corner at my back I've nowhere to go except over you. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Rollins
Almost all empires were created by force, but none can be sustained by it. Universal rule, to last, needs to translate force into obligation. Otherwise, the energies of the rulers will be exhausted in maintaining their dominance at the expense of their ability to shape the future, which is the ultimate task of statesmanship. Empires persist if repression gives way to consensus. So ~ Henry Kissinger
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Kissinger
I like it better that people aren't throwing stuff at my face and trying to fight me on stage. Like in the '80s, it was just aggravating all the time. I have scars from cigars and cigarettes on me, Bic pens, burns from cigarette lighters, all that. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Rollins
You can say, "Well, I have a question," and someone will say, "Oh, so you hate America." And it has nothing to do with the discussion at all. ~ Henry Rollins
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Rollins
The beautiful agonising mirage of the university was inescapable from. This was a forever she had no part in. The eternity was more real to her for consisting of fiery particles of transience - bridges the punt slid under, raindrops spattering the Cam with vanishing circles, shivered reflections, echoes evaporating, shadows metamorphosizing, distances shifting, glorification coming and going on buildings at a whim of the sun, grass flashing through arches, gasps of primitive breath coming from stones, dusk ebbing from waxen woodwork when doors opened. Holy pillars flowed upward and fountained out, round them being a ceaseless confluence of fanatical colours burningly staining glass. Nothing was at an end, so nothing stood still. And of this living eternity, of its kind and one of its children, had been Henry, walking beside her. ~ Elizabeth Bowen
Henry Vii quotes by Elizabeth Bowen
The hounding of a dog pursuing a fox or other animal in the horizon may have first suggested the notes of the hunting-horn to alternate with and relieve the lungs of the dog. This natural bugle long resounded in the woods of the ancient world before the horn was invented. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The march of invention has clothed mankind with powers of which a century ago the boldest imagination could not have dreamt. ~ Henry George
Henry Vii quotes by Henry George
The constant abrasion and decay of our lives makes the soil of our future growth. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Somehow strangely the vice of men gets well represented and protected but their virtue has none to plead its cause - nor any charter of immunities and rights. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
To the virtuous man, the universe is the only sanctum sanctorum, and the penetralia of the temple are the broad noon of his existence. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Like speaks to like only; labor to labor, philosophy to philosophy, criticism to criticism, poetry to poetry. Literature speaks how much still to the past, how little to the future, how much to the East, how little to the West. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The day is done; and slowly from the scene the stooping sun upgathers his spent shafts, and puts them back into his golden quiver! ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I think it would be worth the while to introduce a school of children to such [an oak grove], that they may get an idea of the primitive oaks before they are all gone, instead of hiring botanists to lecture to them when it is too late. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The United States is the most prosperous nation in the world, and yet our citizenship has been comprehensively reduced to consumerism... Buy and ye shall be happy. But what have we truly purchased? In the words of my favorite poet, Henry David Thoreau, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," our lives prostrate at the altar of the false gods of our instant-gratification society. ~ Rich Roll
Henry Vii quotes by Rich Roll
With many readers, brilliancy of style passes for affluence of thought; they mistake buttercups in the grass for immeasurable gold mines under ground. ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Blessed are they who never read a newspaper, for they shall see Nature, and through her, God. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
The New Testament is an invaluable book, though I confess to having been slightly prejudiced against it in my very early days by the church and the Sabbath-school, so that it seemed, before I read it, to be the yellowest book in the catalogue. Yet I early escaped from their meshes. It is hard to get the commentaries out of one's head and taste its true flavor ... It would be a poor story to be prejudiced against the Life of Christ because the book has been edited by Christians. In fact, I love this book rarely, though it is a sort of castle in the air to me, which I am permitted to dream. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Henry Vii quotes by Henry David Thoreau
Men will let you abuse them if only you will make them laugh. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Ward Beecher
Repentant people will recognize a wrong and really want to change because they do not want to be that kind of person. They are motivated by love to not hurt anyone like that again. These are trustworthy people because they are on the road to holiness and change, and their behavior matters to them. People ~ Henry Cloud
Henry Vii quotes by Henry Cloud
…Henry is tired of winter,
& haircuts, & a squeamish comfy ruin-prone proud national
mind, & Spring (in the city so called)
Henry likes Fall.
Hé would be prepared to líve in a world of Fáll
for ever, impenitent Henry.
But the snows and summers grieve and dream;

These fierce & airy occupations, and love,
raved away so many of Henry's years
it is a wonder that, with in each hand
one of his own mad books and all,
ancient fires for eyes, his head full
& his heart full, he's making ready to move on. ~ John Berryman
Henry Vii quotes by John Berryman
